Official LETTER OF APPLICATION.

(760) 900-9574 To the: Design Search Committee, BYU Hawaii, Department of Fine Arts, Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Jay Merryweather and I am very interested in the design position in the department of Fine Art at BYUH. I am grateful to Brandon Truscott for sending me the message to apply for this position. I am a hybrid educator with two undergraduate degrees; One in Fine Art with an emphasis in Painting and Drawing, and the second degree in Graphic Design. My MFA from Claremont Graduate University is a composite art degree with emphases in Design, Painting, and Installation. As part of my experience at CGU I was able to work with artists Anne Bray; Katie Grinnan; Michael Reafsnyder; David Amico; Michael Brewster; and Rachel Lachowicz. I maintain good relationships with these artists as well as critics David Pagel, Carmine Iannaccone, and Chris Michino. In fact, Chris and I recently spent the day discussing the collision of art and design in todays art landscape as we visited with Doug Chrismas from Ace Gallery, Los Angeles and strolled through the MOCA, LA. As an educator I have had the privilege of teaching at USC alongside artist/designers Andrea Zittell and Havin Lin Kirk. I have organized and directed collaborations with the National Parks Services; Vans Inc; Soles for Souls; and most recently, wrote a grant working closely with the engineering department at SUU to support the design and development of a global housing initiative for new sustainable housing for rural, low income, and disaster relief areas. I am also a key member in SUU’s initiative to develop a Center for Creativity and Innovation under the direction of Provost Brad Cook. I own and manage Merryweather Studios, where I have worked with clients and gained national and international recognition for my work. Most recently, Merryweather Studios was awarded How and Print Magazine’s “Color in Design Award” for one of the studios global collaborative projects, “The Ten Days Project.” As a designer I have had the opportunity to do motion and UI design for Jane Goodall; presentation design for Richard Saul Wurman from TED; Logistics routing interfaces for Fed Ex, Sears, and UPS; and work as a consultant for Adobes new digital publishing suite for mobile devices. My personal work and research is also very critical to my development as an educator. Over the past two years I have utilized crowdsorcing and social networking to execute “The Ten Days Project,” which has now spanned the globe into Russia, Israel, and China. Similar projects include the organization and execution of a global collaborative installation called “The Inverted Box.” My work investigates the hybrid object and its relationship to the formal and ideological traditions of the art world. It is catalyzed by the subjective tolerance of a globalized society. The resulting condition allows the confines between the self and the world to be annulled, a sort of socio-global-morphism. I interrogate my subjects through questioning the metathesiophobial world view, which includes coming to terms with how the global centering of humanity is being revealed as inevitable. I ask my students and myself, “What is the better question?” I believe in realizing better ideas. Many thanks for your time, Jay Merryweather
