Crackpot story is hilarious for kids
Laughing matter
By KATHRYN CARR
AUGHTER fans are in for a ribtickling treat as Southport Comedy Week prepares to take the town by storm.
CHILDREN will be chuckling in the aisles when Professor Bumm brings his magic story machine to town. Families can join the Professor and his assistant, Doctor Whee for the unveiling of their latest invention in this crackpot comedy of made-up madness. The pair promise mayhem, mirth and mess as they race to turn words and ideas from the audience into new stories, with the help of their unpredictable new machine. Suitable for children aged seven and above, the show has been described by The List as “absolute mayhem and anarchic fun for all ages”. Professor Bumm’s Story Machine is at Southport Arts Centre on Saturday, November 1 at 2pm. Tickets are £4 for children and £5 for adults. To find out more visit www.blacksheepcomedy.co.uk ● To win a pair of tickets to Professor Bumm’s Story Machine just answer the following question: Which famous professor came up with the formula “E = mc squared”? Send entries on a postcard, with full contact details, to: Southport Visiter Comedy Competition, 26-32 Tulketh Street, Southport PR8 1BT. The closing date is Wednesday, October 22.

A collection of colourful comics from all over the UK have been lining up to take part in this year’s festival, which promises 11 days of giggle-packed events. Star of Channel Four’s Phoenix Nights, Justin Moorhouse will launch Comedy Week this year, when he takes to the Southport Arts Centre stage on Thursday, October 23 with his new show ‘Ever Decreasing Social Circle’. The following evening, Cultural Ambassador John Bishop appears at the same venue with his highly acclaimed show - a jovial look at Liverpool’s Capital of Culture status. Southport will be buzzing with laughter as a range of stand up shows, comedy productions, cinema and other fringe events take place across the town. Some of the highlights of the event, which lasts until November 2, include: The Reduced Shakespeare Company who bring ‘The Bible: The complete word of God (abridged)’ to the Arts Centre on October 25, Laurence Clarke’s ‘12% Evil’ comedy routine at the Arts Centre the following day and Jimmy Carr - Joke Technician at the Southport Theatre on October 27. And don’t forget the first ever Comedy Week pub quiz at the Wellington on Eastbank Street on October 29. If its interactive fun you want, why not try a pub crawl with a difference? ● The Reduced Shakespeare Company present ‘The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged)’
Code NA
The Good - short - Book THE original bad boys of abridgement will bring their compact comedy capers to Southport in the form of their new production, ‘The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged)’. The latest offering from the Reduced Shakespeare Company has been described as an irreverent celebration of “the greatest story ever accepted as fact.” Written by Adam Long, Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor, ‘The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged)’ is an affectionate rollercoaster ride from fig leaves to final judgement, and has been praised by the Sunday Times as “a slick, fast, very funny show” featuring “skilled performers with immaculate sassy American timing.” In one of the most popular shows in the reduced repertoire of “the other RSC,” these three cultural guerrillas tackle all the great theological questions – did Adam and Eve have navels? Did Moses really look like Charlton Heston? And
why isn’t the word ‘phonetic’ spelled the way it sounds? Directed by RSC veteran Matt Rippy, who has starred in shows like Torchwood and films including Hellboy II and The Dark Knight, ‘The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged)’ will arrive at Southport Arts Centre on Saturday, October 25. To book tickets visit www.seftonarts.co.uk or call the box office on 01704 540011. ● To win a pair of tickets to see the Reduced Shakespeare Company at Southport Arts Centre just answer the following question correctly: To which Shakespeare play do the characters Oberon, Titania and Puck belong? Send entries on a postcard, with full contact details, to: Reduced Shakespeare Competition, Southport Visiter, 26-32 Tulketh Street, Southport PR8 1BT.

USTIN Moorhouse is on a mission. A mission to take control of his Facebook page.
“It was fun at first, but now somebody’s thrown a sheep at me, it’s all getting a bit out of hand,” said the Phoenix Nights star. “I can’t cope with all the new things they keep adding, I’m just keeping my page nice and minimalist ...” Social networking is proving more than a little troublesome for Justin. The cheeky northern charmer is returning to Southport this autumn with his critically acclaimed Edinburgh 2008 show ‘Justin Moorhouse’s Ever Decreasing Social Circle’. The brand new tour, which follows on from the success of last year’s sell-out, ‘Who’s the Daddy’, sees Moorhouse embarking on a quest to discover who his five true friends are. According to Justin’s nana, you are truly blessed if you can count your pals on the fingers of one hand. Justin counted, and he has 641. There are work colleagues, phone contacts, old school friends, people he once sent an email to, an ex-wife, a potential wife, and a bloke he bought a lamp from on Ebay. He said: “I was just adding friends, then I started adding friends of friends. Before I knew it I had 641 friends and I thought, ‘If they all came round for a cup of tea I’ve not got the cups!’ “One of the nice things about friend-

ship is you can’t actually finish with a friend. You can’t phone a friend and say, ‘Dave, we need to talk. We are both wanting different things here. There’s this guy at the pub I would quite like to talk to ...” Justin, who has hosted a Sony Awardnominated radio show for Manchester’s Key 103 for the last six years, said he enjoys bringing his stand-up shows to the North West, where he first became a household name. He said: “I have done Southport every time I’ve done a tour. I really like it – I spent a lot of time there when I was growing up. “It’s one of those places that your mum and dad take you too because it’s nicer than Blackpool!” So join Justin as he examines his friendships, opens his address book and begins to purge. Who stays? He decides ... Justin Moorhouse will be at Southport Arts Centre on Thursday, October 23.

Winners put on a show
CAPITAL of Comedy features comedians Silky and Keith Carter as Nige. Liverpudlian-in-exile Silky has been a full time comedian since 1997. The many awards he has failed to win in this time include the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year (prize-winning runner-up 2000), the Liverpool Echo Arts and Entertainment Award (the only person to be nominated twice - always the bridesmaid...), Perrier Best Newcomer, Time Out Award and the FA Cup. He did, however, win the 2000 BAF ‘Out There’ award for Artistic Courage, for a show at the Bakewell Arts Festival, where they were genuinely expecting folk music.. Meanwhile, one of the most talented character actors of his or any other generation, Keith Carter once again brings his inspired creation Nige to the Southport Comedy Week. Capital of Comedy is at Southport Arts Centre on Thursday, October 30 at 8pm Tickets are £10. To book call the box office on 01704 540011.

Comedy course no laughing matter
SOUTHPORT sofa-comedians who think they can give Peter Kay a run for his money have been given a chance to prove themselves on Funny Business, the North West’s number one comedy course.
Part of Southport Comedy Week, the course has been offering participants the chance to hone their comedic skills before they perform live alongside a headline act from the national comedy circuit in a showcase performance. The six-week programme is designed to help budding comedians construct their own stand up routines, from writing through to performance, with recognised professional comedians on hand to offer help and advice. One local talent taking advantage of the course is Phil Todd, a children’s entertainer from Scarisbrick. He said: “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, a burning ambition. “The course is great, and it’s a great mix of people. There’s a guy who used to be a school teacher, and someone who works in a kebab shop. “We’ve also got a few investment bankers, who thought now might be a good time to re-train...” While some of the participants will be using the course to kick-start a career as a professional stand-up, others see it simply as a way of building up confidence and

improving their presentation skills. Phil, a former Dune FM DJ, said: “There’s so much self doubt, you’re thinking ‘Can I actually do it?’ “The tutors have been really helpful, teaching all the basics from how to use a microphone properly to actually getting up on stage. “The downside of my current job as a children’s entertainer is when I forget to fill my car up on the way back from a job and end up running round a petrol station in my outfit. “But I can’t think of a better way to make good money than by making a room full of seven-year-olds laugh.” Sam Avery, Project Manager and course tutor for The Comedy Trust said: “We do put students through their paces on this course, but those who really make the grade will be put forward for Rawhide Raw nights, performing on the same stage as the likes of Peter Kay, Jimmy Carr and Johnny Vegas.” The final performance of Funny Business will be held at Southport Arts centre on Wednesday, October 29.
