Wednesday 8th July 2015 at Aintree Racecourse The Big Bang North West brings together Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) in a fun, engaging and interactive environment. It aims to inspire students to study STEM subjects by illustrating their importance across a wide-range of careers. The event attracts thousands of students from all over the region and from a mix of backgrounds. MerseySTEM is delighted to be running this prestigious event again in 2015. Our aim is to make this year even bigger and better, attracting more schools, businesses and educational partners from across our region. Led by Engineering UK, and in partnership with the British Science Association and Young Engineers, the Big Bang North West is part of a series of free, regional events held across the UK. Students will have the opportunity to take part in hands-on workshops and activities, showcasing the range of opportunities opened up by STEM subjects. Pupils will also have the chance to show off their own achievements and successes as entrants of the National Science and Engineering Competition, STEM Clubs Awards or the Inspiration Awards. We are inviting you to become part of the biggest regional celebration of STEM by sponsoring elements of this high-profile event. Outlined below are the sponsorship packages available for 2015, though these can be adapted to suit your specific wishes if required. More about the event can be found at www.thebigbangfair.co.uk/northwest. Alternatively, to discuss your involvement, please contact me directly (contact details at the end of this document). We would be delighted to partner with you to make the North West Big Bang 2015 a huge success and look forward to hearing from you.
Engineering turnover grew 6.7% to £1.17 trillion over the 12 months to March 2013 which is 24.9% of all UK turnover. But, we need many more engineers, scientists & technologists… Engineering employers are projected to need 1.82 million people with engineering skills from 2012-2022. This means we will need to double the number of engineering apprentices and graduates entering the industry! Filling the demand for NEW engineering jobs will generate an additional £27 billion per year from 2022 for the UK economy. So, we need more young people studying STEM subjects now… But, at present, of an average cohort of 11 year olds, only around... • one in five will achieve a GCSE physics A*- C grade • one in twenty five will obtain a physics A*- C grade A-Level • and only one in fifty will obtain an engineering degree
You can help change this. Your inspiration will make a difference! So let’s make it happen. The Perkins Review* recommended that the most effective way for business to address the STEM challenge is to coordinate activities through ‘Engineering UK’ initiatives such as Big Bang events & the Tomorrow’s Engineers programme.

National Science and Engineering Competition (NSEC)
Inspiration Awards
The ‘National Science + Engineering Competition’ (NSEC) is an initiative of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and is coordinated by the British Science Association in partnership with Young Engineers and The Big Bang. NSEC is open to all 11-18 year olds living in the UK and in full-time education and aims to recognise and reward young people’s achievements in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) project work. The chosen finalists will be invited to present their projects at the national final, which will be held in March 2016.
Would you like to sponsor an award that has been specifically designed to reward skills and subject-knowledge relevant to you or your company’s interests? Sponsoring an Inspiration Award is the ideal choice.
There will be a Junior, Intermediate and Senior winner and runner-up awarded for the ‘Science and Maths’ category and also for the ‘Engineering and Technology’ category.
Examples of Inspiration Award categories might include:
Our Headline Sponsor would be invited to present all the NSEC awards in the final awards ceremony and to send staff to assist with competition judging.
The Inspiration Awards provide an additional opportunity for students entering NSEC to be rewarded for their efforts. Award categories can be created to accommodate the sponsor’s individual requirements.

MerseySTEM is committed to promoting equality and diversity in all areas, and at all levels, of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We are working towards a situation where all people, regardless of gender, race, sexuality, religion, disability or socio-economic background, are encouraged, enthused and nurtured to their full potential. Recent reports from the Government’s Science and Technology sub-committee have highlighted the positive impact of attracting a diverse STEM workforce, not only on hi-tech, industrial and scientific industries, but also on the UK economy as a whole. Attracting, and retaining, more people to STEM subjects can only be done if each and every person feels welcomed and valued. MerseySTEM recognises that achieving this goal requires the creation of an inclusive, supportive environment where each pupil can explore the full range of opportunities available to them, free from discrimination and judgemental attitudes.
