“AstraZeneca is a global pharmaceutical

company with a major UK presence. Through innovation and collaboration we work to achieve better health for all.” Our company purpose is to push the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines. We believe the best way we can help patients is to be science-led and we share this passion with the scientific, healthcare and business community of the UK. AstraZeneca has a long and deep-rooted heritage in the UK, which is marked by scientific innovation that stretches back over many decades, where ICI, Zeneca and AstraZeneca scientists have worked closely with other leading scientists, both in the UK and around the world to deliver generations of medicines that have transformed the lives of many patients around the world. The UK has played a vital role in our success and will continue to do so into the future as it sits at the heart of our long term strategy. In addition to supporting the science and innovation base of the UK, we also make a significant economic contribution in this country. AstraZeneca has a workforce of more than 6,700 employees across seven sites in the UK, and we create value by supporting a broader base of

approximately 30,000 jobs. We account for a significant share of the UK industry R&D investment and export medicines around the world. It is a contribution we are committed to making in the decades ahead. As well as having a large research and development organisation, we also have more than 200 active partnerships with academic, research-funding and charitable organisations around the country. We also offer significant educational opportunities for young scientists. Our 2012 programme saw around 100 PhD scholarships and postdoctoral positions and industrial placements for around 70 students. AstraZeneca Liverpool Up to 360 people work at our biologics site at Speke, Liverpool, which has unique facilities to bulk-manufacture the nasal spray influenza vaccines Fluenz and FluMist. AstraZeneca supplies Fluenz as an important part of the Government’s extended childhood flu vaccination programme. This year all children

between the ages of 2 and 17 will be vaccinated against flu with the nasal spray. We are very proud of our role in helping the NHS to provide this service. Since 2010 there has been >£75m of investment at the site to support increased production of the vaccine for use in the UK and internationally. Why ‘The Big Bang’ is important to us The Big Bang is all about inspiring young people from all backgrounds to study science, technology, engineering and maths to go on to pursue careers in engineering and science. We can’t stress enough how important this is. AstraZeneca in Liverpool is strengthening its manufacturing capability by innovating and investing in new technologies as well as increasing exports, improving skills and building supply chains. The greatest challenge for us is to have a deep and broad talent pool to draw from. By encouraging local children to see excitement and opportunities in science and engineering, the Big Bang is helping to develop world class talent on our doorstep.

Prizes Plus Dane Prize for Endeavour STEM is not just about the spark of inspiration; it’s not just for lone geniuses. For every apple that falls on someone’s head, there are hours of lab work to be done. For every idea that turns into the breakthrough, there are millions that lead to a dead end. Scientific investigation rarely succeeds first time. New discoveries require people with the determination to keep getting up and trying again. Plus Dane is presenting this award to recognise the hard work and effort that is needed to do a project.

AMEC Foster Wheeler Award for Connected Excellence Amec Foster Wheeler designs, delivers and maintains strategic and complex assets for its customers across the global energy and related sectors. This prize is presented to the group which demonstrated the bringing together of knowledge, expertise and skills from a wide network, with a desire to achieve excellence in their project through team work and putting safety first. These are attitudes which represent the best of Amec Foster Wheeler. Scottish Power Bright Spark Award A love for learning and an enquiring mind are attitudes that underpin all research in STEM. This award recognises the sparks that are needed to be successful in STEM – inspiration, enthusiasm an enquiring mind, communication and desire to take their work forward.

Merseyside Skeptics Prize for Asking a Good Question The Merseyside Skeptics aims to develop and support the skeptical community on Merseyside. The first step towards being a good skeptic is knowing what questions to ask. A good question can be turned into an excellent experiment that can lead who knows where. The prize-winner will be given the opportunity to work with the Skeptics to develop their good question and work with them in professional labs to test it out. Hopefully this year’s good question will be next year’s prize winner. This prize recognises the best idea for a project, even if it didn’t turn out quite right!

Wirral Metropolitan College Aspiring Apprentice Awards in Science and Engineering There are many routes into STEM careers. Apprenticeships are a well-recognised route that allow the apprentice to learn while also gaining practical employability skills. This award recognises the skills shown by the competitors that will make them excellent apprentices of the future.

CREST Prizes for Communication It’s not good enough to come up with the best idea that’s going to save the world if you can’t explain it to anyone else. Being a leading scientist, engineer or mathematician means being able to communicate your ideas to a team of people. We also need good science and engineering communicators to show the public what fantastic advances we’re making in STEM. The British Science Association’s CREST scheme is a national award scheme recognising success, building skills and demonstrating personal achievement in STEM project work.

West Cheshire College Prize for Innovation Innovation is vital in today’s fast paced society. West Cheshire College inspire future innovators, helping them to see the limitless career opportunities that are available in STEM. This prize recognises the spark of innovation and originality in STEM which can lead to the big ideas of the future.

The Royal Statistical Society Prize for the Best Use of Maths and Statistics Prize Good mathematical and statistical skills are essential for all. Numbers are everywhere and knowing how data is used is key to understanding the world. Gathering, assessing and analysing data, and interpreting these results to solve problems is a core part of statistics, and is a crucial tool for subjects ranging from biology, medicine and engineering through to the environmental sciences, geography, psychology and sociology. We believe everyone needs to be able to use and interpret statistical information, to benefit their studies, their everyday lives, and their future careers.

The Royal Society of Chemistry Prize for Experimentation If at first you don’t succeed… Experimentation is a key part of any STEM project. It represents the ability to keep trying and to carefully think through results and refine experimental techniques. It also recognises the need to record and communicate results of experiments, as experiments need to be repeatable so others can refute or confirm results.

National Careers Service Careers Inspiration Award The National Careers Service Careers Inspiration Team in the North West and Staffordshire, aims to inspire people into making more informed career choices, raising their aspirations and making learning and work choices that reflect these aspirations. There is a vast range of exciting careers in STEM fields and related careers that fully utilise, recognise and celebrate the skills gained through studying STEM and completing related project work. This award rewards the project that best demonstrates the development of employability skills and increasing knowledge of STEM careers. This project has effectively inspired a deep-rooted interest in pursuing STEM careers.
