MERVE POYRAZ portfolio 2007-2013
Merve is a Brooklyn/Istanbul based designer. She received her Master of Science in Architecture degree from Pratt Institute in May 2013, and Bachelor of Architecture degree from Istanbul Technical University. She has a strong passion on investigating emerging geometries, material interactions and the blurry border between nature and technology. She experiments user interactivity and fabrication as a designer. She has entered several competitions, attended workshops and worked in different architectural offices as a design practice.

METASTABLE PLANTATION critic: Jason Vigneri-Beane Pratt Institute Spring 13 _ Thesis
Injecting a new type of infrastructure for micro industry to Manhattan`s already existing kinetic transportation and industry infrastructures is the aim of this thesis. if this infrastructure is controlled by human or is it a giant machine in the city, which controls people? Will it adapt itself to the city or will the city adapt itself to the machine? Is it an augmentative operation or will it have it`s own operation? The result will create a biomimetic environment whose lifelike behaviors implicitly threatened to depersonalize the occupant by blurring the lines between human life, animal life, technology and environment.

The project proposal is to design the store interface of the system. Since this new type of industry increases user involvement interactivity and customization, it has to inhabit a public place. Zuccotti Park is chosen as a site for this store interface proposal. The aim is to design an interactive interface that improves the user production involvement. So the project tests the limit of triggering system where a user only deals with a drone until the last minute of interaction. The plaza is mainly a node and a sub node system that works in a polycentric way. The nodes are the eyes of a semi-flat plaza. These nodes bloom and retract by a trigger. The activators are either people or drones/plug in’s which bring produced goods. This activity of blooming and retracting can affect each other. 3D Print

UNDERGROUND PARK critic: Philip Parker Pratt Institute Summer 12 published inProcess 18 The proposed institution is an underground park and an art institution which melts into each other. It emphasizes the natural life and the evolution of the edge of the Hudson River by going underground. It intermixes the art institution located next to Whitney and the High Line with the park and natural life. The part next to Whitney is an art institution which melts into underground park. The underground park melts into the river. The surfaces not only deal with air and body but also deals with water. The underground park channels, blocks the water. From the other side of the highway to the river, surfaces change their characteristics from large spaces to fragmented channels, from opaque surfaces to translucent surfaces. With the increasing translucency towards the river, people start to analyze what is happening underground of the area.

Maya cloth animation techniques were used during the process. given the existing lines of a chosen water movement, various kinds of forces gave birth to different results.

The results of cloth animations in Maya were taken in different phases. Charatersitcs of different phses were researched. As a result of the researchs for the site and the several phases, aggregation of components were made by different techniques. 154 components of 7 different phases are used in the overall form.

Site Analysis The site has it`s own kind of internal structure like the surface. The dominating line of site is mostly located around the the high line since it is an attraction point for both tourists and New Yorker`s. Galleries and restaurants in the area has a more vibrant movement which is not steady and represented by dotted lines. Hudson River Park is generally separated from the other side of the highway. The highway is a psychological border for both sides.

BORDER SUBTERRANEA critic: Vito Acconci Pratt Institute Fall 12 Border subterranea is an architectural open scenario system for the conf licted country borders. there are three options: USA-Mexico, Turkey-Syria, Israel-Palestine. The underground tunnel system is based on the decisions of people who live there. It is for people who don`t want to live in both countries. The system can create just a passage for immigration, or it can create its own country which will eat the land underground from both countries. It is for illegal or scientif ic experiments or living.

INFLATABLE PODS: are made of a recyclable, anti-UV, crystal-clear material. A minimal entrance supported by a lightweight frame creates a barrier between outside and inside. A blower ensures that air renewal is continuous and that humidity, dirt, mosquitoes and other pests - apart from inquisitive passers-by - are kept out.

RECIPROCAL critic: Christopher Whitelaw Computer Aided Construction, Spring 13 Reciprocal is a parametrically designed canopy for Pratt Institute Higgins Hall South Building stairs. The project includes a proposal of a wooden canopy spanning 10 feet long. The two primary things are to use Grasshopper software to generate parametric components and CNC milling as to develope individual members The pattern generated with the blend shape Maya and then intersected with the surface in Rhinoceros 3D.

POP-UP INDUSTRY critic: Cigdem Eren ITU Fall10 The aim of the project was to change tjhe present situation of Ikitelli industry area. Ateliers around Eminonu, Kagithane, Halic was forced to move their places to Ikitelli, years ago. Pop-up building components are transported to residential, commericlal areas to show the production/consumption life-cycle. Then transport back to Ikitelli mothership. The structure has a sustainable life-cycle such as it’s physical life cycle. With this aim railways are integrated to the facade of the building. Panels which are openable and sliding provide energy to the building.

TRANSITION KADIKOY competition project for TMMOB Spring 11 Kadikoy as a square is a transition point in Istanbul. The aim of the project was to use the current chaos there and strengthen it as a characteristic. The pedestrian routes were used to create a new circulation spine in the area. At the intersection of these routes are the specialized spaces such as the port building. The activity system is used as a base for the design, leading the public structures to the port building. Public Structures are nodes to simplify the transition in Kadikoy with different facilities.

ON THE ROAD competition project for Cuhadaroglu Fall10 The area in between two organic residential neighbourhoods is designed as a vein like structure which has different road alternatives. Every experince of the road structure is different depending on the user. The user can create his/her own path by different entrances and exits. This road systemconnects two chaotic neighbourhoods and dissolves them into each other. The road include the plug in spaces such as exhibition, lecture and workshop. These spaces are designed in a modular system which allows the future oppurtunities to be fIexible. The plug-ins can increase and decrease.

ITU DORMS critic: Sinan Mert Sener ITU Fall 10 The project is the additional dorms for ITU. The building is located in the center of Istanbul which is also a very touristic are. It is cloes to the ITU Management Faculty and Architecture Faculty. It is also next to a residential area. The aim was to connect all of these functions in the area and create a public space for the students to hang out on the ground fIoor. Using the underground as a parking lot that serves to the city was important for the location of the project. Upper fIoors has studios, library, study rooms as well as the dorm rooms and a cafe that has a scenic Istanbul view.

BIO-WALL with Terrefrom ONE 2013 exhibition at Rotterdam/ 2013 This is an installation of the projected world population density in the next 100 years. It has been modeled by combining all the world cities together as one continuous growth system. As human population expands, we see it as one single macro city spread across the continents. Without using computer code that mimics growth in nature, this method is the actual iterative vehicle of growth itself. Bacteria in this constrained form and under the right conditions, behaves almost identically to urban population patterns. In many cases, they are as good as computational versions because they are the source that derives algorithms in the first place. In time, the mapping installation may illustrate patterns yet unobserved in typical models. It is this emergent and unfettered map of population we wish to make into spectacle. By using bio lab based materials, we expect to narrow the gap between idealized mathematical interpretations and observable events in nature.
