Alpine, Texas

See what makes Alpine one of Texas’ best places to call “Home.”

w

elcome to Alpine, Texas – the county seat of Brewster County and home to Sul Ross State University and the Museum of the Big Bend. With a population approaching 6,000, Alpine is the largest town in the region and serves as the “Hub of the Big Bend.” There’s lots to love about this vibrant town: mild climate, mountain views, a lively art scene, and strong community spirit. Alpine enjoys all the cultural and educational benefits of a university town, from theatre and dance to archeology and intercollegiate rodeo. There’s even a professional baseball team - the Alpine Cowboys. Alpine’s climate is almost perfect, with 247 sunny days per year. Summer highs average

90 degrees, thanks to the town’s 4,400-foot elevation and the rainy season, which cools things down from June through September. Winter always brings a few snowfalls, but most days reach 60 degrees. Enjoying the outdoors is part of everyday life in Alpine, with year-round hiking, bicycling, golfing, hunting, and camping. Within a two-hour drive you can be hiking in the Davis Mountains, swimming in the world’s largest outdoor spring-fed pool at Balmorhea, backpacking in Big Bend National Park or mountain-biking in Big Bend Ranch State Park. The low humidity and absence of big-city lights makes stargazing a backyard activity in Alpine, although many choose to view distant planets through telescopes at nearby

Ranching continues to be a cornerstone of life in the Big Bend, and you can expect to cross paths with working ranchers and cowboys on a typical day in Alpine. Rodeo is big at Sul Ross State University, the birthplace of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. Preserving the traditions of the American West is the focus of annual events like the Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering, Trappings of Texas, and Big Bend Ranch Rodeo. Perhaps the best thing about Alpine is its friendly, small-town atmosphere and strong sense of community pride. In 2014, Alpine was one of 10 winners of the Governor’s Community Achievement Award -- one of the most coveted environmental and community improvement honors in Texas. And in 2013, the Library Journal named Alpine Public Library the “Second-Best Small Library in America.” Alpine is a unique combination of cultures, talents and energies working together to create one of the best places to live in Texas. Journalist Dan Rather says Alpine is “a town-city that has kept its West Texas tradition, look and feel, while adopting the best of what’s up-to-date in the Lone Star State.” We agree! We think you will, too. aT

“Annie Get Your Gun”

THEATRE OF THE BIG BEND’S 5OTH BIRTHDAY Irving Berlin’s beloved musical set to be reprised BY steveLANG

t

he Theatre of the Big Bend’s 50th year will be celebrated with a bang, featuring performances of Irving Berlin’s beloved musical, “Annie Get Your Gun,” June 26-July 19.

The reprise of the 2006 production that set ToBB attendance records, will again be held in the San Antonio Livestock Exposition (SALE) Rodeo Arena at Sul Ross State University’s Turner Range Animal Science Center. Performances are scheduled Friday-Sunday, June 26-28; Thursday-Friday, July 2-3; Sunday, July 5; and Friday-Sunday, July 1012 and 17-19 at 8:15 p.m. For ticket information, visit the website at Sulross.edu/ToBB. “To my knowledge, we are the only company who has ever done this production in a rodeo arena, with horses, and we’re doing it again,” said Dona Roman, Sul Ross professor of Theatre, who has acted in, directed and produced ToBB productions for the past 17 years. “Thanks to the wonderful collaboration with Dr. Rob Kinucan (Dean of the College of Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences) and ANRS personnel, we had a highly successful production (in 2006) and we’re looking forward to this production,” Roman said. “The City of Alpine has also been generous in its support of our efforts.” Roman called the continued success of the Theatre of the Big Bend “a credit to the countless performers, volunteers and an appreciative audience.” “We are blessed with a very hardy West Texas ranching patrons and a frontier spirit that also describes the tenacity of the Sul Ross theatre and music faculty. It continues to be a really incredible experience.” Since 1966, the Theatre of the Big Bend has filled a summer entertainment niche for the vast tri-county region of Brewster, Jeff Davis, Presidio and an ever-expanding beyond. In addition, the theatre provides a summer repertory experience for community actors and musicians, artists and students to work with professionals from Sul Ross and elsewhere. 6

alpine TEXAS | alpinetexas.com | alpinetexasguide.com

Annie Get Your Gun performances begin June 26, 2015.

“Fifty years of providing summer theatrical entertainment is a significant achievement,” said Roman. She said that the establishment of summer internships and the Theatre of the Big Bend guest artist program in 2006 has expanded both the talent base and creative opportunities. “The Theatre of the big Bend will always be community-oriented, but we want to continue to grow,” said Roman. “We really try to be a part of the community and also provide a theatre experience for our students and students from other universities as well.” Roman noted that over half of the audience now comes from outside the tri-county area. “The Theatre of the Big Bend offers great exposure to the region and is great for tourism.” “The summer musical will always be family-oriented and broadbased,” she said. It has become an institution that our audiences have come to expect.” aT

OTHER ALPINE MURALS MUSEUM OF THE BIG BEND, SRSU campus Historic map of the Big Bend region painted by Enrique Espinoza in 1940. BREWSTER COUNTY TAX APPRAISER BUILDING, 107 W. Ave. E. Historic painting “View of Alpine”, an idyllic scene painted by Jose’ Moya del Pino in 1940, located inside, to the left of the entrance. On a casual stroll through Alpine’s downtown area, you will discover several murals painted over the years by local and nationally recognized muralists. These renderings range from the whimsical to the historic, from the primitive to the professional. In spring 2015, Alpine’s Gallery Night, Inc. will begin working on its third Historic Calendar mural. This year’s “Cattle Drive” mural will depict the deep-rooted western ranching heritage of the Big Bend, highlighting the ethnicity of cowboy traditions, customs and values. This mural is the third, in a series of six, murals that are based upon vintage calendar tops, which serve as snapshots of life in the past. The calendar upon which the Cattle Drive mural is based was distributed in 1951 by Alpine’s lumber yard. The 60’ wide and 17’ tall mural and a 20’ x 10’ calendar month of May 2015 will be painted on the same wall where the lumber yard’s slogan, “We put Pine in Alpine” used to be. Award-winning mural artist Stylle Read of Cleburne, Texas, will paint the mural with help from a volunteer base of qualified artists, structural engineers, local residents and Brewster County jail trustees. Alpine is designated a Cultural District by the Texas Commission on the Arts. Alpine’s Gallery Night, Inc. is a non-profit arts organization serving Alpine and the Big Bend region. The goal of the Historic Calendar mural project is to honor and embrace the cultural history of our region and its inhabitants by recreating historic calendar art as murals that beautify the walls of public and private buildings in the community.

museum of the big bend

CONTINUES TO “TELL THE STORY”

t

Museum exhibits trace Big Bend history

he Museum of the Big Bend was founded in 1925. Soon after, Museum founder Victor Smith designed an 18,000-squarefoot, native-rock building to be its home. The building was constructed on the Sul Ross University campus during the 1936 Texas Centennial, and the Museum resided there for a number of years before experiencing several location changes. In the early 2000s, after a $4.4 million fundraising campaign, the 1936 rock building was renovated and new permanent exhibits were installed. In 2007, the Museum of the Big Bend was able to return to its original home. Today the Museum’s education program offers a diverse format of art, history and cultural topics for children and adults. Many of the Museum’s exhibits include artifacts and displays that trace the natural history, human history and confluence of cultures of the Big Bend region. The historic Marty and Yana Davis Map

Collection includes maps dating from as early as 1548. Since 1987, the Museum has hosted the annual Trappings of Texas Western Art and Cowboy Gear Exhibit and Sale. Proceeds from this event support future Trappings events, Museum exhibits and educational programs. The Museum has been honored for excellence by major organizations, including Preservation Texas, Humanities Texas and the Texas Historical Commission. Museum publications have won a number of prestigious Wilder awards for design excellence. For ninety years, the Museum of the Big Bend has continued to “tell the story” of the Davis Mountains and Big Bend region through its exhibits, speaker series, adult workshops and children’s programs. Open Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays 1-5 p.m. Admission is free. Donations are welcome. Parking is available. Since 1986, the Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University has showcased the very best cowboy gear and fine Western Art at the longest running event of its kind in the country: Trappings of Texas. The opening of Trappings of Texas is held each year in April. The opening weekend offers visitors an opportunity to meet the men and women who are the creators of the gear and art in the museum’s Trappings exhibit and public auction. These works of art remain on display at the museum for viewing and purchase. Trappings of Texas is by invitation only and new artists and gearmakers must be juried in by the entire Trappings of Texas Committee, including Guest Curators of Gear and Art. Guest Curators of Gear include members of the Traditional Cowboy Arts Association, TCAA, Leland Hensley, Wilson

Capron and John Willemsma. Guest Curators of Art is Cowboy Artists of America, CA, member, Wayne Baize and Mike Capron whose fifty years living in the southwest is reflected in the art that he creates. Like the originators of the first event, the goal of Trappings of Texas is to have a place for some of the most creative and talented cowboys to display their art. Trappings of Texas is the only fundraiser for the Museum of the Big Bend, and monies earned help to support not only Trappings of Texas but the many educational programs and exhibits at the museum throughout the year. FFA is big at AHS and students typically place high in competitions. This year was the first time AHS students competed in the “One Act Play” UIL competition; they performed the Insanity of Mary Gerarld and advanced to state. Another first was participation in the “Texas High School Mock Trial” UIL competition; the students advanced to state and are already preparing for the 2015/2016 Mock Trial competition. More could be said, but it’s plain to see... Whatever the activity, AHS students work hard and compete well. aT

Sul Ross Industrial Technology Program Rebuilding Firm Foundation BY steveLANG

“Who is going to build the machine that builds your computers or the desk the computer sits on? People are starting to value this type of work again.” “The students have been out recruiting and bringing in their friends. They love this place.” An IT Club was organized shortly before Homecoming 2014, and the club won the parade float competition, finished second in the cupcake challenge, third overall in Spirit Week activities and sponsored a Queen candidate, freshman Bailey Walker of Marfa. Junior Catano, Marfa, switched his major from Agricultural Education to IT as soon as the program was reinstated last spring. “I have a career plan,” he said. “After graduation (May 2016), I plan to go to Houston to the Ocean Corporation and get my commercial diving license for underwater welding.” “When I first came in (to Sul Ross), I didn’t know what I wanted to do,” Catano said. “I thought I would get my teacher certification to teach welding down the road. But when the IT major returned and I found out about it, I saw it’s what I do (he works as a welder and also does carpentry for El Cosmico in Marfa).” “I enjoy the machine tool technology and I want to do some (metal) casting,” he added. When IT was closed in March 2011, the

program had dwindled to 11 majors. Former IT professor Dr. Roy Smith was named interim director to succeed Dr. Dan Vrudny, who died unexpectedly earlier in the semester. Wasserman was hired to teach the required classes to enable the remaining majors to complete the program, in addition to teaching Agricultural Education classes, including welding, metal working, construction and small engines. The program would have been phased out by Spring 2015, but Wasserman and Smith had other ideas. “We were talking one day and instead of just finishing the program, we made a decision to try and rebuild,” Wassermann said. He added that as discussion and proposals for new and revamped curriculum developed, administrative support grew. Dr. Larry Guerrero, Dean of the College of Professional Studies, also saw possibilities when he assumed his duties in Fall Semester 2012. “In 2013, Representative Nevarez led the efforts to overturn the Coordinating Board decision and we were able to reinstate IT. From that point on, we were able to give

Zero to 24 majors in two semesters. Those numbers mark the rebuilding speed of Sul Ross State University’s Industrial Technology (IT) program since it was reinstated a year ago. New courses, renewed enthusiasm, energy and commitment have retooled a program that was being phased out four years earlier. The program was designated as lowproducing (fewer than 25 graduates in five years) under Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board standards. Subsequent legislative action, led by State Rep. Pancho Nevarez, Eagle Pass, overturned the Coordinating Board action, leading to reinstatement of the program last spring. Department chair Scott Wassermann, himself an IT graduate (B.S. 2009, M.Ed. 2014), said there were several reasons for the resurgence. “Part of it is that Industrial Technology is something tangible that appeals to a broad spectrum of learners,” he said. “Students can get hands-on education and have finished products at the end of the semester.” In addition, new courses have been developed in response to interest expressed by public schools. “Technical education shifted (from manual components) to computers, but in recent years, public schools have indicated that we need this type of education,” Wassermann said. “Who is going to build the machine that builds your computers or the desk the computer sits on? People are starting to value this type of work again.” “Finally, the success we have had is a lot of people working, from administration to faculty and staff to the students,” he said.

Scott two cycles of HEAF (Higher Education Assistance Funds) funding to replace outdated equipment,” he said, adding that hazardous materials and other debris were removed, the building was repainted and thoroughly cleaned. “When I first walked through the 19,000 square foot building, all we heard was crickets,” he said. “IT pretty much received a facelift over the last six-eight months, and you don’t hear crickets anymore, you hear machinery, and that’s music to your ears.” Wassermann, mentored by Smith, developed a number of new courses, including solar energy technology, which is

enhanced by grant funding. Advanced welding technology and welding certification classes are now offered for the first time. Welding certification has attracted considerable industry interest for qualified students. “If a student passes 3F and 4F (welding requirements), they can automatically qualify for 16-week company welding programs,” Wassermann said. “Salaries start at $35,000 and this (certification) gets a big foot in the door.” Somewhat surprisingly, the most popular course has been black-and-white photography, offered as a creative arts option in the degree plan. “Last fall, we capped the class at 20 students and there were more students wanting to get in,” Wassermann said. “We will offer it again next fall.”

Welding remains a popular course as well, and adjunct instructor Ray Bullock brings 40 years of industrial experience and 30 years of teaching to the program. Terry Ross, a retired tool and die maker with 33 years’ experience, serves as an adjunct instructor in machine tool technology. Wassermann teaches three classes (with labs) in both the long semesters, including engineering drawing, basic electricity and woodworking during the present semester. “The solar energy course elicited interest from the community and led to an anonymous $10,000 donation for scholarships,” Wassermann said, adding that seven different Sul Ross endowments offer scholarships for IT majors. Industrial Technology has also added the Administrative Systems and Technology program, which prepares students for a career as a supervisor, administrative assistant, executive assistant, records manager, technology coordinator, corporate trainer, and manager. Courses are taught by Mazie Will, associate professor of Business Administration, and the program has 15 majors. Wassermann said that two IT courses are now included in the core curriculum for every campus degree plan. “We are confident that the continued administrative support will foster additional growth,” said Wasserman. “Scott has just done an outstanding job,” said Guerrero. “He was faced with adversity, he persevered and now he’s making progress. There is a whole different atmosphere (in IT) and what we were wishing it to be the first time we walked through the building, it has kind of become. It is really uplifting to see the program back with 24 majors.” For more information, contact Wassermann, (432) 837-8137 or jwassermann@sulross.edu.

Alpine is on the frontier of far West Texas, in vast, beautiful and rugged country. It’s easy to get to if you’re willing to invest a few traveling hours. You won’t be disappointed, as Alpine and the entire Big Bend region are like no other in Texas. Alpine Train Depot

HIGHWAYS: Alpine is situated on conjoined U.S. Hwys. 67 and 90. Hwy. 67 is a major north/south route running from the border with Mexico at Presidio to San Angelo, after crossing IH-10. Hwy. 90 is a major east/west route running from Van Horn and IH-10 to Del Rio and beyond to San Antonio. Both highways are broad, shouldered and well maintained for high speed. Travel on these routes by car, motorcycle or bicycle is convenient with small towns spaced about 30 miles apart. For the more adventurous traveler, TX 17 can be taken from IH-10 in Balmorhea through Wild Rose Pass to Fort Davis, connecting with TX 118 into Alpine. Or, TX 118 can be taken from IH-10 in Kent through the Davis Mountains and Fort Davis to

Alpine. These routes are slower, very scenic, over good roads and offer a unique introduction to Big Bend country. BUS: A private carrier, All Aboard America, offers two north bound and two south bound trips daily between Presidio and the MidlandOdessa Airport, with stops in Alpine. All Aboard America connects with Greyhound in Fort Stockton and Odessa for nationwide service. The bus stop in Alpine is presently at KC’s Quick Mart (837-5497) on east Hwy. 67/90. Go to www.allaboardamerica.com for times and fares. RAIL: Amtrak offers passenger rail service to Alpine two times per week west bound and two times per week east bound. The train uses the Union Pacific tracks with stops in Sanderson and Del Rio on its way to San

Antonio, and stops in El Paso and Tucson on its way to Los Angeles. The historic train depot is conveniently located at Holland Ave. and Fifth St. in downtown Alpine. Visit www.amtrak.com for times and fares. Air: The Alpine-Casparis Municipal Airport (837-5929) is a public use general aviation airport located north of the downtown area. It is available for non-scheduled flights. Please check with the airport for scheduled charter flight service. The Midland-Odessa International Airport (MAF) is a 2 ½ - 3 hour drive and is also served by All Aboard America. The El Paso International Airport (ELP) is a 3 ½ - 4 hour drive. Rental Cars: Rental cars are available at Alpine Auto Rental. Call 432-837-3463, or www.alpineautorental.com.

Check at the Visitor Centers or with the respective Ranger stations for trail information, camping permits and other information. Biking The desert mountains of the Big Bend region offer some of the most scenic bicycle touring routes and challenging off road biking trails in Texas. You can plan your own adventure or consult with a local guide, outfitter or ranger to help you experience the best the region offers. Motorcycling The Big Bend region is one of the most popular motorcycling destinations in the southwest. Two of Texas’ most scenic, highly prized and praised motorcycle touring routes are the Davis Mountains Scenic Loop and FM 170, River Road, along the Rio 32

Grande between Terlingua and Presidio. Bird Watching Over 500 bird species have been recorded in the Big Bend region of the Chihuahuan Desert, making this area a birder’s paradise. remote and rugged hunt deep into the wilderness to test the most skilled hunter. Check the Buyers’ Guide for area hunting ranches. Rock Hounding The Big Bend Region of Texas is famous for its beautiful agate and jasper. Because all of the land in the Big Bend is privately owned or parkland, you need the owner’s permission before you can hunt. The Stillwell Ranch, south of Marathon, is open daily from October to May for rockhunting (432) 376-2244. Or you can take a guided rockhunt with Teri Smith, who leads field trips to several area ranches. She can be reached at www.terismithrockhunts.com, or (432) 837-2451. You can also hunt rocks on the road cuts in the area. To learn about what the local rocks look like, visit the Last Frontier Museum, in the lobby of the Antelope Lodge, 2310 W. Highway 90 in Alpine. River rafting and canoeing The mighty Rio Grande is a popular rafting and canoeing

destination. Several outfitters in Terlingua can provide guides for your river adventure of a few hours or several days. If you’re planning your own adventure, please check with an outfitter or with Big Bend National Park or Big Bend Ranch State Park for current river conditions, access points, and permit requirements. Horseback trail riding There are several private horseback riding outfitters in the region. You can choose to ride in the cool pine forests of the Davis Mountains or explore the rugged desert along the Rio Grande and other unique spots. Star Gazing The night time skies of the Big Bend region are among the darkest in the nation. Local organizations are working to preserve this unique quality of the region. You can attend an organized Star Party at McDonald Observatory, or step outside anywhere and witness a spectacular heavenly display.
