The sunsets of West Texas are their own event.
For over 70 years the Museum of the Big Bend has been capturing the human history of this expansive and varied region of Texas. Permanent exhibits provide an introduction and interpretation to the history and cultures of the Davis Mountains and Big Bend region and reflect the contributions of the Native American's, Spanish, Mexican and Anglo Americans. A temporary gallery rotates showings and exhibits several times a year. The highlight during March and April is the Trappings of Texas, a juried showing and sale of the best in contemporary cowboy art, gear and crafts. Annual exhibits also include showings from the historic Yana and Marty Davis Map Collection and other permanent collections. Housed in a beautifully restored 1930’s era building on the Sul Ross State University campus, the Museum was founded in 1925. The Museum fulfills its motto - “a land this vast requires a great storyteller”. The Museum features free admission, a gift/book store, guided tours and is handicap accessible. aT For more information, call 837-8730 or visit www.museumofthebigbend.com. The goal is to recreate Mexican calendar art to beautify the walls of public and private buildings in the community. By embracing this truly popular art form we can also embrace the cultural history of our region and its inhabitants. The next building to receive a mural is located in the heart of downtown Alpine. Built in 1940 and used as the “Woolhouse” (known to locals as the Big Bend Wool and Mohair), it is no longer in operation and is now used as a storage building. The new mural will by 108’ long and 13’ 6” at the peak of the roof and underneath the mural a 20’ x 6’ calendar of this September will be painted. Award winning mural artist, Stylle Read of Cleburne, Texas will paint this new mural along with four volunteer artists that assisted in last year’s mural project. Since 1986, the Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University has showcased the very best cowboy gear and fine Western Art at the longest running event of its kind in the country: Trappings of Texas. The opening of Trappings of Texas is held each year in conjunction with the Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering on the last weekend of February. The opening weekend offers visitors an opportunity to meet the men and women who are the creators of the gear and art in the museum’s Trappings exhibit and public auction. These works of art remain on display at the museum for viewing and purchase through April. Trappings of Texas is by invitation only and new artists and gearmakers must be juried in by the entire Trappings of Texas Committee, including Guest Curators of Gear and Art. Guest Curators of Gear include members of the Traditional Cowboy Arts Association, TCAA, Leland Hensley, Wilson Capron and John Willemsma. Guest Curators of Art is Cowboy Artists of America, CA, member, Wayne Baize and Mike Capron whose fifty years living in the southwest is reflected in the art that he creates. Like the originators of the first event, the goal of Trappings of Texas is to have a place for some of the most creative and talented cowboys to display their art. Trappings of Texas is the only fundraiser for the Museum of the Big Bend, and monies earned help to support not only Trappings of Texas but the many educational programs and exhibits at the museum throughout the year. If you’re planning your own adventure, please check with an outfitter or with Big Bend National Park or Big Bend Ranch State Park for current river conditions, access points, and permit requirements. Horseback trail riding There are several private horseback riding outfitters in the region. You can choose to ride in the cool pine forests of the Davis Mountains or explore the rugged desert along the Rio Grande and other unique spots. Star Gazing The night time skies of the Big Bend region are among the darkest in the nation. Local organizations are working to preserve this unique quality of the region. You can attend an organized Star Party at McDonald Observatory, or step outside anywhere and witness a spectacular heavenly display. See page 26.

he diversity of cultures in Alpine and Big Bend country leads to a unique variety of arts and entertainment available regularly and in special events. Art galleries and art events are a special attraction of the Alpine community. Artists have been coming to this area for decades for the quiet natural beauty and special light effects found only in the Big Bend. The Francois Fine Arts Gallery on the campus of Sul Ross State University features rotating BFA and MA student art exhibitions as well as special showings by invited artists. The Museum of the Big Bend, also on the SRSU campus, is a treasure of the region, a key stop on any visit to Alpine and a great introduction to local cultural history. There are several distinctive galleries to be found on a stroll along the downtown Holland Avenue, offering selections of the work of local and nationally recognized artists, antiques and locally crafted fine jewelry. Learn more at www.GalleriesArtists.com. There are two annual art events that draw regional and national attention to Alpine. The Trappings of Texas at the Museum of the Big Bend is held every year in February in conjunction with the Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Trappings is the oldest cowboy gear and fine Western art exhibit and sale in the U.S. Alpine’s Gallery Night Artwalk is held annually in November. Artwalk is a weekend event featuring gallery openings, special showings, auctions and musical entertainment. For information on the next Artwalk go to www.artwalkalpine.com. On any given evening you may find by chance local musicians performing at a number of Alpine restaurants or bars. Regular venues include The Reata restaurant, Harry’s Tinaja, and The Railroad Blues. The Railroad Blues books local musicians, national groups

and performers from around the world, provides a spectrum of musical styles and is known as one of the best live music clubs in Texas. There are three special event centers in Alpine. The Marshall Auditorium hosts regular concerts, plays and special performances. The Gallego Center is primarily a sports cen-
ter but also hosts occasional large special performances. Both of these venues are on the SRSU campus. The restored Granada Theater in downtown Alpine is the newest event center. It features state of the art sound and lighting systems for music, theatrical performances, community and private events. For more information go to www.alpinegranada.com. aT

ost ranks high among the top 10 reasons for choosing an institution of higher education, and Sul Ross State University has gained a national reputation for affordability. A US News and World Report survey ranks Sul Ross as the fourthlowest-priced for in-state tuition and fees during the 2013-2014 academic year. Sul Ross’ resident tuition and fees of $4,754 ranked behind only the University of Wyoming ($4,404); Elizabeth City (N.C.) State University ($4,428); and Louisiana State UniversityAlexandria ($4,617). No other Texas public universities were ranked in the top 10 list. In comparison, resident tuition and required fees at public universities averaged $8,539 for 2013-2014, compared to $19,465 for non-residents, based on data reported by 403 ranked public colleges in an annual U.S. News survey. Sul Ross high on the “A-List” for Affordability, Accessibility and Academic Excellence. While low cost remains a significant part of the equation, Sul Ross meets or exceeds other selection criteria as well, including: desired majors, student and faculty diversity, small class sizes, and strong graduate school and/or job placement records. “I can think of numerous reasons – perhaps one for every enrolled student – for attending Sul Ross State University,” said Dr. Quint Thurman, interim President. “I believe that Sul Ross would be highly ranked on a similar virtue if we were to talk about value since we have the best residential housing in Texas, wonderful instructors and staff, very small classes where faculty get to know every student by name, and arguably the best year- around weather in the country,” he said. Thurman added, “Students attending Sul Ross and our alumni necessarily must be some of the wisest people on earth for having made such a good decision to attend college here. We can hear some of the reasons from our students themselves.”

“My cousins all graduated from Sul Ross, so I was very familiar with the university. It was really affordable for me, compared to going to UTEP (University of Texas El Paso) or elsewhere. I have never had to worry how to pay for my education; between scholarships and work study, there has always been a plan that is workable for me. “I love the faculty; they are all helpful; the faculty and staff, no matter who it is, are always there to help you. “I love the Sul Ross environment. There is always something to do. The campus community is very friendly and very loving. “This is my home; I plan to stay here for my Master’s degree (in psychology), then attend the University of Washington for my doctorate and later establish a clinical psychology practice. Sul Ross provides a solid base for my future career.” “I had been out here before with my mom. I loved the area and decided I wanted to live here some day. “I attended a community college and decided I wanted to be a geology major. I Googled geology schools and when I found Sul Ross, I was ecstatic. It is one of the best geology schools in the state, and the area is definitely conducive to the subject matter. “I love my professors: they are engaging, friendly and want me to be here. Sul Ross is a good place to be active. I have two on-campus jobs that I love, I am a member of the Geology Club and involved in undergraduate research (McNair Program). And the classes are hard.” “This is a cool place; my first impressions were right.” “I started out at UTEP, but it was too big. A coach who knew me from high school called me and offered me a chance to play football. I accepted, even though I had never visited Alpine.

“I really like the place. Alpine is a small town; about the size of the town I grew up in, and at Sul Ross, the classes are small and very hands-on. The professors know you as a person and they are always available to help you. “As a student-athlete (football/track and field), I want to help the athletics program improve, and I want to lead by example on and off the field. I plan to coach after graduation because I enjoy working with kids and I hope to be a good mentor and counselor. “Sul Ross is a great place to get an education. It is very affordable and there are all kinds of sources here to help you. It’s a great place to get a degree.” “I first became interested in Sul Ross in middle school and I concentrated more on (attending) in high school. My dad was doing private investigation work and I accompanied him out here. I thought the campus was gorgeous. “I just got fixated on it. Sul Ross is way out in the middle of nowhere and that’s what I liked. “The campus is small; I come from a small school and I wanted to come to a more cozy environment. “It is very affordable; I am not taking any loans (to pay for my education). “College rodeo started here. I have loved to work horses all my life, and this is huge ranch and horseman territory; it just felt like home to me. “This school is the outdoor experience. This is a peaceful place, but it has so much history; everyone has a story to tell, and since I want to be a journalist, this is ideal.” “I transferred to Sul Ross from Southwest Texas Junior College and immediately became involved in the McNair Program. The McNair Program has been extremely instrumental to my success and getting 22

me in the right mind-set for graduate school. “The Natural Resource Management program offers one of the best learning environments I have ever been in. I have visited other campuses and their programs and Sul Ross surpasses all of them. As students, we are all really good friends. We can work with each other on problem-solving on projects, we volunteer to help on each other’s projects whenever needed, and all in all, we are a tight-knit group. “Our professors, especially Dr. (Louis) Harveson and Dr. (Bonnie) Warnock are some of the hardest-working individuals I have ever seen in my life. They have a lot on their plates, but always find ways to get the jobs done. Yet, they always take time for students, from freshmen to graduates. They are true inspirations for the students. “I appreciate the confidence that has been placed in me; to undertake a graduate research project as an undergrad. Because of Sul Ross and the McNair Program, I have learned to carry myself in a professional atmosphere, including conducting research, presenting at conferences, networking and problem-solving. The McNair Program really started that foundation. You get whatever you put into it, and I feel I have really benefitted from my efforts.” aT

he Big Bend Region of Texas enjoys some of the best night sky viewing in the continental United States. West of the Pecos River, the night skies have long been an iconic element of the landscape, a tradition that dates back centuries to the people who lived here long before Europeans arrived. More recently, the night sky has been the subject of careful and continuous scrutiny by professional astronomers at the McDonald Observatory, located atop 6,800-foot Mount Locke. Far from the lights of large cities and the clouds of coastal Texas, the observatory has numerous research telescopes and stateof-the-art instruments for imaging and spectroscopy. According to the National Park Service, Big Bend National Park has earned the distinction as the park with the least light pollution in the lower 48 states. On clear and moonless nights, over 2,000 stars, planets and “shooting stars” are visible to the

unaided eye. As it becomes increasingly difficult to find areas free of air pollution and light interference, places with dark, clear night skies become that much more valuable. Because of this, the region also hosts one of the largest annual amateur astronomy gatherings in the USA, the Texas Star Party. The City of Alpine, the Alpine Environmental Advisory Board and the Alpine Chamber of Commerce are working with the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) to become an International Dark Sky Community (IDSC). In July 2009, Sierra la Rana, a residential development adjacent to Alpine, was designated as a Dark Sky Friendly Development of Distinction by the IDA. In addition, Big Bend National Park is working with the IDA to be designated a “Dark Sky Park”. aT

has acted in, directed and produced ToBB productions for the past 16 years. “The longevity of the Theatre of the Big Bend is a credit to the countless performers, volunteers and an appreciative audience,” said Roman. “We are blessed with very hardy West Texas ranching patrons and a frontier spirit that also describes the tenacity of the Sul Ross theatre and music faculty. It continues to be a really incredible experience.” Over the years, the Theatre of the Big Bend has entertained close to half a million people while performing more than 130 productions. Presently, the Theatre of the Big Bend produces one major show each summer. “Due to budget, we have gone to fewer, but bigger shows,” Schwab said. “However, the talent

rom ancient Greece to modern West Texas, outdoor theatre has transfixed audiences for thousands of years, including the past half-century in Alpine. Since its formation in 1966, the Theatre of the Big Bend has filled a summer entertainment niche for the Big Bend region and beyond. The theatre provides a summer repertory experience for community actors and musicians, artists and students to work with professionals from Sul Ross State University and elsewhere. The summer 2014 production is the critically acclaimed “Into The Woods,” book by James Lapine with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Performances will be held each Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8:15 p.m. from June 20 July 6 at the Kokernot Outdoor Theatre. “Fifty years of providing summer theatrical entertainment is a significant achievement,” said Dona Roman, Sul Ross professor of Theatre, who
pool has increased, and the quality, for the budget, is by far the best theatre you are going to see.” Summer internships and the ToBB guest artist program were established in 2006 with the theatre's unique rodeo version of “Annie Get Your Gun,” performed at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition Arena at Sul Ross’ Turner Range Animal Science Center. “Annie Get Your Gun” was the only offering for the 2006 season and allowed the summer theatre to focus all resources onto one blockbuster production. Attendance at the performances broke all previous records. Productions have evolved to include not only more Sul Ross students, but students from other universities, thanks to the internship program. “The Theatre of the Big Bend will always be community-oriented,” said Roman, “but we want to continue to grow. We really try to be a part of the community and also provide a theatre experience for our students and students from other universities as well.” “The community involvement has been a real plus,” said Brooks. “There have been so many volunteers as cast members, crew members, the orchestra and elsewhere, and that is an aspect that really brings the community together. This (collaboration) truly elevates the cultural level of our community.” Roman said that the ToBB continues to play to a wider audience, due to its presence as a major summer tourism attraction. “We continue to strive to create a broader outreach,” Roman said. “We really believe what we do is pretty magical.” aT

Alpine is on the frontier of far West Texas, in vast, beautiful and rugged country. It’s easy to get to if you’re willing to invest a few traveling hours. You won’t be disappointed, as Alpine and the entire Big Bend region are like no other in Texas. Highways: Alpine is situated on conjoined U.S. Hwys. 67 and 90. Hwy. 67 is a major north/south route running from the border with Mexico at Presidio to San Angelo, after crossing IH-10. Hwy. 90 is a major east/west route running from Van Horn and IH10 to Del Rio and beyond to San Antonio. Both highways are broad, shouldered and well maintained for high speed. Travel on these routes by car, motorcycle or bicycle is convenient with small towns spaced about 30 miles apart. For the more adventurous traveler, TX 17 can be taken from IH10 in Balmorhea through Wild Rose Pass to Fort Davis, connecting with TX 118 into Alpine. Or, TX 118 can be taken from IH-10 in Kent through the Davis Mountains and Fort Davis to Alpine. These routes are slower, very scenic, over good roads and offer a
