By Meagan O'Toole-Pitts Austin-based grocer Whole Foods Market will open a store in El Paso for the first time. The natural food supermarket aims to open the 45,000-square-foot store, now under construction on Mesa across from Coronado High School, in October, according to Rick Amstater of RJL Real Estate Consultants, a real estate brokerage firm tasked with the development of a two-story shopping center also underway next to the supermarket. “In addition to Whole Foods, we’re building another 45,000 square feet of space and of those 45,000 square feet, 12,000 square feet will be offices on the second floor,” Amstater said. “The balance will be either retail or restaurant.” Tenants for the spaces have not yet been announced, he said. “The other tenants will move in before and after [October],” Amstater added. Whole Foods is slated to hire more than 100 individuals to operate the store and pay employees a starting wage of $11 per hour, according to Whole Foods spokesperson David Redick. “Typically, we hire 80-to-95-percent of the team members within the immediate community, with a handful of transfers from other areas of the country – New Mexico and Texas,” Redick said. Jobs will be posted on the company’s website late this summer or early this fall, he noted. High quality food and a knowledgeable staff is what sets Whole Foods apart from other grocers, Redick said. “We are the first national grocery chain committed to providing GMO [Genetically Modified Organism] transparency for our customers by 12 HOMES of El Paso / June 2016
2018,” he said. “There are 90-plus ingredients commonly found at our competitors that we do not carry on our shelves. A few ingredients that do not meet our quality standards include hydrogenated fats and artificial colors, flavors, preservatives and sweeteners.” For shoppers with food allergies, Whole Foods offers store tours with a nutritionist who teaches customers what to look for on food labels. “We are the destination for people with alternative diets and food allergies,” Redick said. “Our knowledgeable team members will help customers find an alternative to meet all types of allergies. We also sign the most common food allergies, such as gluten free, next to price tags.” Beef, pork, chicken and turkey producers who sell to Whole Foods are rated for their animal welfare practices with the help of the Global Animal Partnership, a cohort of farmers, ranchers, animal welfare advocates, scientists and retailers dedicated to continually improving the lives of farm animals. “You won’t find any added growth hormones, nitrites or nitrates, or antibiotics in any of our meat,” Redick said. Whole Foods’ wild-caught seafood comes from fisheries that are certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council or are rated either green or yellow by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch® program and The Safina Center. “We don’t sell any of the red-rated seafood that you might find at other grocery stores or seafood markets,” Redick said. “Red ratings typi-
cally suggest that the fish population is overfished or caught in ways that harm other marine life or habitats.” Whole Foods buys and sells farmed seafood as well, but only from farms that are leaders in environmentally responsible aquaculture, he said. The company’s aim to reduce its effect on the environment isn’t limited to the food. Construction of the store is being done with energy efficiency in mind. “We will install solar panels on the rooftop,” Redick said. “The store will feature all LED interior lighting, and we are using recycled glass for a portion of the storefront.” Until the Westside store opens this fall, the closest Whole Foods Market to El Paso is in Albuquerque. “We see an impressive and growing food scene in El Paso and want to be a part of this food movement,” Redick said.

As summer approaches in the Sun City, energy bills will rise along with the
temperature, and knowing how to cool your home in a way that won’t break the bank is — dare we say — even more important than knowing where to get the best raspas in town. Making a few updates to a home’s insulation and AC units can make a big impact on energy costs, especially for larger homes. Buying Energy Star appliances will save on utilities, but there are also cost-saving methods you can adopt with the appliances you already own. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, there are five simple ways to keep the cool in, keep the heat out and save money doing both.
Utilize wind and windows When night falls and the temperature drops, the U.S. Dept. of Energy recommends turning off
your cooling system and opening your windows. In the morning, windows and blinds should be shut to trap cold air inside.
Effective window coverings are equally important to preventing heat build-up in the home. In fact, when completely closed and lowered on a sunny window, highly reflective blinds can reduce heat gain by about 45 percent. Ventilation is the least expensive and most energy-efficient way to cool any building, notes the U.S. Dept. of Energy. Be thermostat vigilant When you leave the house, remember to lower the thermostat, allowing the house to go uncooled while you’re away. However, be sure to set the thermostat to a temperature that’s comfortable for any pets. The U.S. Dept. of Energy recommends lowering the thermo-

stat to 78 degrees Fahrenheit only when you are at home and need cooling. The department also aims to the bust the myth that drastically lowering the temperature, say to 58 degrees, will cool the house down faster — It will not. Setting the thermostat to an excessively low temperature only adds to your energy bill. Additionally, lamps and TV sets should not be placed near thermostats due to the fact that thermostats sense heat from these appliances, which can then cause AC units to run longer than intended. For those with a routine schedule, a programmable thermostat can automatically change the temperature during the times you expect to be out.

Know how best to use your fans Because fans cool individuals, and not the space within a home, by creating a wind chill effect, having them on in an empty room is a waste of energy. Reversely, fans can also save on energy costs when used where they’re needed most. When combined with air conditioning, a ceiling fan can allow you to raise the thermostat about 4 degrees Fahrenheit with no reduction in comfort, according to the U.S. Dept. of Energy. Fans should also be used to remove heat and humidity from bathrooms after a shower, in kitchens after cooking, and in laundry rooms after washing and drying. Fans can be used for spot ventilation throughout the home.
Maintain cooling systems Reading the owner’s manual for your air conditioner or evaporative cooler is paramount to know how best to operate and maintain the unit. Replacing a dirty or clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner's energy consumption by up to 15 percent, according to the U.S. Dept. of Energy. It’s recommended to clean or replace your cooling system's filter or filters every one to two months during the cooling season. However, filters may need to be replaced more often if the air conditioner is in constant use, is subjected to dusty conditions, or you have fur-bearing pets in the house. To ensure your cooling system
is running at its maximum efficiency, schedule regular maintenance with a certified HVAC technician.
Be aware of the devices that generate heat Only about 10 percent to 15 percent of the electricity that incandescent lights consume results in light: the rest is turned into heat, according to the U.S. Dept. of Energy. This means that the more lights that are on in the house, the hotter it’s going to be inside. It’s best to install lighting that runs cooler. LED light bulbs emit very little heat, unlike incandescent bulbs which release 90 percent of their energy as heat and CFLs which release about 80 percent of their energy as heat.
Other devices that add heat to the home when plugged in and on include TVs, stereos, computers, dyers, dishwashers, ovens, curling irons, and hair dryers. Use of these devices should be kept to a minimum to keep the space cool. On the hottest days this summer, the U.S. Dept. of Energy recommends you avoid using the oven and instead cook on the stove, in a microwave or on a grill outside — A top tier excuse to throw a barbecue. - by Meagan O'Toole-Pitts

I also got the Women's Council of Realtors Business Women of the Year in 2008 from the El Paso Del Norte Chapter.
I was a Center Against Family Violence honoree for community service in 2010. I also received El Paso Inc.'s Women of Impact 2010 award, Links' Star Award for 2011, and El Paso Children’s Hospital 2012 Milagro Gala Heart Full of Miracle Award. The last one is I was featured in the El Paso Times Style Magazine as one of the 2011 El Paso Super Realtors.
Are you involved in any charities or community organizations? I was on the Chamber of Commerce Board. I’m a member of Leadership El Paso Class 19 and I’ve served on the boards of the Center Against Family Violence, YWCA, and the Holocaust Museum. I’m chairman of the board for the El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestra.
I’ve been chairman of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra board of trustees, chairman of the UMC foundation board, and past president of the El Paso County Medical Society Alliance. I’ve served on the advisory board of the YWCA Transitional Living Center and the El Paso Children's Hospital. Currently, I serve on the UMC foundation board, the El Paso Symphony Orchestra board, and advisory boards for the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce and CIMA Hospice.
