Chamizal National Memorial Park celebrates 50th Anniversary By Meagan O’Toole-Pitts

This year the National Park Service celebrates 100 years in existence and El Paso’s Chamizal National Memorial Park celebrates its 50-year history. "Chamizal National Memorial is a great place for new El Pasoans to visit because it tells the story of an historic event that literally shaped the border between El Paso and Juarez," said Gina Hernández, spokesperson for the Chamizal National Memorial Park. The Chamizal National Memorial, which encompasses a 55acre park complete with trails, a museum exhibit, an art gallery, and a theatre, was established in 1966. The opening of the park marked the end of a century-long dispute between the U.S. and Mexico. "Not only is the story of the century-long dispute, which almost every U.S. president attempted to resolve, significant to our country's history, but the national memorial is unique in its own right," Hernández said. "The park is a living memorial to peace and diplomacy." In 1963, U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson and Mexican President Adolfo Lopez Mateos signed The Chamizal Treaty. The

Chamizal boundary dispute arose when the movement of the Rio Grande – known as the Río Bravo in Mexico – over time caused Mexico to lose land. The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo established the Rio Grande-Río Bravo as the boundary between the U.S. and Mexico, but as the river began to move south, tension between the two nations rose. The Chamizal Treaty ended the dispute over land, and today the Chamizal National Memorial commemorates the diplomatic negotiations and subsequent

resolution, made now 50 years ago. "Just as in the example of the presidents who ultimately settled the dispute, who were able to do so through cooperation and mutual respect, Chamizal National Memorial promotes an atmosphere of understanding by providing opportunities to learn about and relate to borderland cultures through visual and performing arts and history," Hernández added. The Franklin G. Smith Gallery at the national park showcases art by local artists, with exhibitions changing every two to three months. "The current exhibit, by local artist Carlos Flores, is called 'La Revolución' and is about the Mexican Revolution," she said. "As with our theater performances, the goal of the gallery exhibits is to highlight the history and culture of this area." The Chamizal National Memorial theatre is home to local productions, such as Shakespeare on the Rocks and the Siglo de Oro Drama Festival, which harkens back to Spain’s Golden Age, a time of high artistic activity and achievement that lasted from about 1580 to 1680. The Siglo de Oro Drama Festival is hosted by the national park each March, and Shakespeare on the Rocks, soon to be in its 28th season, is produced each fall. Shakespeare on the Rocks has taken stage at the Chamizal National Memorial for the past half-decade, originally being shown at the McKelligon Canyon Amphitheatre. The classical theatre company opens this season with "Othello" on Sept. 23.

"The theatre in the Chamizal is, in my opinion, the most beautiful theatre in El Paso," said Vanessa Keyser, Shakespeare on the Rocks council member. "It's unique stage design lends itself to all different types of performance art. I have directed and acted there and it is one of my favorite venues." The park grounds are impressive, as well as the theatre, Keyser said. "The cultural history behind the Chamizal is fascinating," she said. "I encourage anyone visiting El Paso, or new to el paso, to visit the theatre. Go see a show, and then go back during the day and walk around the gorgeous grounds sur-

rounding the venue." In recent years, landscaping at the national park has begun to transition from non-native grass to a Chihuahuan Desert landscape to include native plants, said Hernández. "Recent planting projects have included bird of paradise bushes, yuccas, agaves, blonde grass, Spanish dagger, desert willow, sand sage, and mesquite trees," she said. Yvette: “My father-in-law, James Henderson. He’d been in the real estate business since the ‘70s. The company was originally owned by him since 1977 and I came to work with him in 1989. He was my rock. He taught me the business. He just recently passed away a couple years ago, but when he was able we would pick him up every day and bring him to the office. He was 86 years old when he died, but he was still coming to the office up until his last year. He was our mentor. Which neighborhoods or types of buyers/sellers do you specialize in? I work all areas in the El Paso region. I do sell a lot of pre-sales for home builders and enjoy listing and selling resales too. My passion is to help families find their HOME. What do you do just for fun? Hobbies? I love to travel and try different things, different foods and getting to know different cultures. I enjoy taking road trips.

Who has been a large influencer for you in your real estate career? I cannot say there has been just one person. I’ve met and learned from so many great REALTORS® through the years that it is very hard to name just one. I started as a builder's rep and up to now, I continue to grow, learn and live. I learn from everyone that crosses my path. So everyone has been a great influence to me.

Did you pursue a different career before real estate? What was it and how does it add to your abilities as a REALTOR? Before this, I worked with Verizon in New York. But prior to that, as far as a sales background, I grew up in Jamaica and one of my first jobs was at a record store. I used to sell records. That's not an easy job. People think it is, but it's not an easy job. You have to know what people like, their taste in music, and be able to recognize all the different genres, artists and musical instruments. That's were my sales background comes from.

Do you have any special REALTOR® designations? I have several designations. I believe hard work is the key to success and I am always looking to increase my skills, proficiency and knowledge.
