Alive with History
WELCOME TO PECOS West Texas town offers varied attractions
w
ELCOME TO PECOS, TEXAS! For those new to Pecos, you might have missed some things. For one, Pecos was the birthplace of the rodeo in 1883, and the tradition is celebrated annually in the summer with the West of the Pecos Rodeo at Buck Jackson Arena. The story of how the rodeo got its start is pretty simple. Pecos stood at the junction of several cattle drive and wagon trails. The Goodnight-Loving, Butterfield, and Chisholm Trails passed through Pecos, all because of the availability of easy natural crossing points on the Pecos River. After 1881, the rail road also passed through here. With so much traffic regularly coming

through Pecos, it was only natural for the many cowboys on trail drives to demonstrate their skills and try to be the best at what they did. Bragging rights for being the best led to direct competition, and thus was born the rodeo, right here in Pecos. Learn more on page 30. One of the main attractions here is the West of the Pecos Museum. It occupies two historic buildings, the Johnson-Heard Saloon and the Orient Hotel built respectively in 1896 and 1904. The saloon boasts a talking bartender and the two buildings house more than 50 rooms displaying scenes of life in the 1800s. Learn more on page 12. Also, drop by the Memory Lane Antique Car Museum for a step back in time.
Plan your calendar around seasonal events such as the summer rodeo and cantaloupe harvest, or the September 16th Fiesta and Parade. See the Events Calendar on page 17. The food in Pecos is something you won't want to miss. The town is well known for its Tex-Mex cuisine, see page 14, as well as the famous Pecos cantaloupe. They became a favorite of rail passengers traveling through Pecos, as the Texas and Pacific Railway regularly picked up a supply of the fruit. The distinct flavor of Pecos melons is now known all over the United States. Learn more on page 14.
The weather in this region is so predictable that the military chose it for its Pecos Army Air Field because the area averaged 360 days per year that flying was possible. No other site offered such wide flexibility, weather-wise. It was the location of the country's largest bomber training center during World War II because of the weather and the flat
landscape. It appears lots of folks like Pecos. Forbes named it the second fastest growing small town in the nation in 2012. Visit for a day or stay for a lifetime. Learn how you can visit Pecos at visitpecos.com.

Message from the City & Chamber of Commerce
From the Mayor Hello from Pecos, Texas! Visit one of the fastest growing small cities in America (Forbes Magazine) and enjoy true Texas hospitality as you meet some of the friendliest and helpful people anywhere! Where is Pecos? Pecos is in far West Texas 75 miles west of Odessa and 200 miles east of El Paso on Interstate 20 and centrally located to just about everything! Day or weekend trips include going to the mountains, lakes, sand dunes, or the desert. Explore caves and caverns, hike in the mountains, ride and play on sand dunes, take a scenic drive to the McDonald Observatory, or camp at Balmorhea State Park and enjoy some birding and a spring fed swimming experience as well as terrific scuba diving! While in Pecos visit our historic Main Street area and our famous West of the Pecos Museum in the restored 19th century three story Orient Hotel. Next door is the Number 11 Saloon which has a bullet hole in the floor from a long ago gunfight reminding us of the true beginnings of our community which is steeped in rich cultural history. Steps away visit the Pecos Chamber of Commerce/CVB located in the old 1911 Texas Pacific railroad depot which also houses
the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame or just down the street visit the awesome Memory Lane Car Museum. A new baseball complex is underway at our City Park that will host all levels of tournaments for kids of all ages! Visit the last week of June for the West of the Pecos Rodeo known as the “World’s First Rodeo” which began in 1883 and features the best of the best cowboys and cowgirls vying for top honors. Visit in July and August and experience some of the sweetest cantaloupes ever that Pecos is famous for. Pecos is part of the Delaware Basin and our county (Reeves County) has more active oil rigs than any other county in Texas and second only to North Dakota. This is providing many more job opportunities in our area. Visit Pecos for a day, weekend, or even a week or two. At the end of the day relax and enjoy our extraordinary sunsets and you just might find yourself staying longer than you planned! See you soon! Venetta Seals Mayor, Pecos, Texas
From the Chamber President Welcome to Pecos, Texas a growing town that has made its way on the map! Historically we are proud to be Home of the World’s first Rodeo and are world famous for our Pecos Sweet Cantaloupes. While these things continue to be an important part of Pecos, our community has more to offer. In 2014 our Pecos Area Chamber of Commerce took all the things that make our town unique and introduced our new branding that represents our history as well as our present and future. In our branding the imbedded spur and rowel not only stand for our history but a sun, a sign of promise, of hope, cooperation and growth. Whether your stay in our community is long or short my wish is that you leave having experienced these things during your stay. As a tourist you will find great information on Pecos and our surrounding area at the Chamber as well as experience a bit of Pecos hospitality with the helpful staff.
Along with promoting our town, the Chamber and its committees host several events throughout the year including our Annual Chamber Banquet, West of the Pecos Rodeo, Night In Old Pecos/Cantaloupe Festival and Fall Fair. Executive Director Lupe Davis and her staff work diligently to promote local business growth, serve the community and network with many organizations and civic groups for a better Pecos. Our organization consists of 151 members and is led by our board of directors. The board meets monthly to compose policies and programs to increase business and community opportunities for positive progress for Pecos. Learn how you can join the Chamber - see page 33. Within the district's schools, there are 45 classrooms with built-in projector systems, multiple state-of-the art computer labs, a remodeled library and a 1,000-seat auditorium. DARE Program After an absence of more than a decade, the DARE program was revamped and reinstituted in 2009, and has emerged as a stronger force for good than ever before. The Drug Abuse and Resistance Program now begins with pre-K students, leading to a 10week unit during fifth grade. Spearheaded by Officer Olga Keese are a middle school mentoring program, an "adopt an officer" effort for elementary school classrooms, and a Cops and Kids Picnic initiated in 2011. A summer camp for at risk students was initiated that same year. DARE also has been expanded to include a student-led community assistance effort by high schoolers who aid elderly and disabled

Step Back in Time
Museum takes visitors back to the Old West
The West of the Pecos Museum is a delightful step back in time, featuring displays of artifacts and memorabilia from the 1800s, and more than 50 rooms dedicated to specific themes and characters from the period when Pecos was a budding community. In 1963 the museum was created and housed in two historic structures, the architecture and construction of which constitute a museum in their own right. Each of the hotel's rooms has been converted into a display theme. Rooms are dedicated to rail road memorabilia, the rodeo, and local pioneer families. The mythical wild cowboy Pecos Bill also has his own room. Other room displays include the “Law West of the Pecos"; beauty and barber shops; kitchen; doctors; general store; school rooms; and volunteer fire department,

to name a few. The saloon offers a talking bartender who tells a story of one of the many gunfights this place once knew, and near the door is a bullet hole left from one of them. Additional outdoor and other exhibits near the hotel and saloon include displays of antique farm equipment and chuckwagon and print shop exhibits; a replica of the infamous Judge Roy Bean's court; and a cemetery with historical markers including the burial place of the "the gentleman gunfighter” Clay Allison. Allison is quoted as saying “he never killed a man that did not need killing”. Nearby is the Texas and Pacific Railway depot housing the Pecos Chamber of Commerce and Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame. The museum gift shop offers the chance to take home some tangible memories of your visit. Come have some historical fun at the museum. Seasonal hours apply. Tex-Mex Food in Pecos
MEXICAN FOOD SEASONED WITH HERITAGE Tex-Mex food is a wonderful tradition dating back to the Spanish occupation of the southern United States. In this cuisine, with a character all its own, you get the blending of influences from Old Mexico and the Tejano heritage of Native Americans, who adapted their lifestyles to the Spanish. Today's TexMex food is a marvelous combination of flavors and menu items that represent a true regional cuisine like no other. Predominant seasonings that lend their strengths to Tex-Mex food include chili powder, garlic, and cumin. Their typically abundant use gives this food a distinct difference from most straightforward Mexican cuisine. As such, Tex-Mex is a treat found nowhere else. And some of the best Tex-Mex food that will ever grace your palate can be found in Pecos, Texas. Of the many reasons to prioritize a stop in Pecos, the food is probably number one. Local residents know a good thing when they see it — or in this case, taste it. If you have never eaten a chile relleno, you have no idea what you are missing. This is a mild poblano pepper stuffed with a delicious cheese and
14
meat mixture, and then coated in an egg batter and deep fried. It is unforgettable. Trademark dishes in this cuisine include fajitas and the ever-popular chili con carne. Generous measures of cheese are coupled with beef and beans for true Tex-Mex flavor distinct from purely Mexican traditions. Be sure to look for any of a variety of enchiladas in red sauce with sour cream and guacamole. Not that you can't get great Tex-Mex food elsewhere, but Pecos just might be the heart and soul of the region when it comes to this food. More than a dozen fine restaurants in Pecos offer some of the best Tex-Mex food you will ever find.

The Pecos Cantaloupe is famous nationwide for its unique and delicious flavor imparted by the potassium rich soil and abundant sunshine in the area. First grown in 1917, the melons were sold to dining cars of the Texas & Pacific Railway and promoted as “Pecos” cantaloupes gaining a loyal following among the satisfied diners on the train. Find your own Pecos cantaloupe in the summer months at roadside stands and Texas grocery stores. History of Pecos
THE LEGEND OF PECOS BILL
Pecos, Texas, originally located on the banks of the Pecos River gained its name from this famous meandering water course. Pecos is a Native-American word meaning “crooked”. The regions prehistoric history is evident in pictographs and in the Jumano people who irrigated crops from San Solomon Spring near Balmorhea. Three Jumano’s met the expedition of Antonio de Espejo near Toyah Lake in 1583 and Espejo’s diary notes these people lived along the Pecos River. Settlers of Mexican descent farmed from early times this same area irrigating from surface water. Anglo farmers arrived in 1871 and the availability of several river fords within 30 miles made this a strategic location for commerce and a crossroads for cattle and wagon trains. The Texas and Pacific Railroad arrived in 1881 linking Pecos with El Paso to the West and Fort Worth to the East and allowed settlement and further development of the 28
According to the legend, Pecos Bill was born in Texas in the 1830s. Pecos Bill was traveling in a covered wagon as an infant when he fell out unnoticed by the rest of his family near the Pecos River (thus his nickname). He was taken in and raised by a pack of coyotes. Years later he was found by his real brother, who managed to convince him he was not a coyote. Pecos Bill taught gophers to dig holes for fence posts, rode mountain lions and cyclones and roped huge herds with his lariat - which was a snake. He married Slewfoot Sue and lived happily ever after.
ranching industry and agriculture in the fertile Pecos River valley. The sweet Pecos cantaloupe was introduced and gained worldwide fame and is still grown in the region. Pecos has been sustained through the years because of the railroad, its strategic location on Interstate Highway 20, agriculture and oil and gas exploration. And as home of the World’s First Rodeo, Pecos draws the top rodeo performers and fans each summer for the West of the Pecos Rodeo.

PECOS RIVER The history of Pecos is closely linked to the Pecos River. Early inhabitants found both a steady water supply and several easy crossing points in this area. The river spans 700 miles from the Sangre de Cristo mountains northeast of Santa Fe, New Mexico to its ending at the Rio Grande Rivers near Langtry, Texas. Early travelers to the area described the river as having a fast current and being from 60 to 100 feet wide and seven to ten feet deep. This made crossing the river difficult except in a few places. Today, while flooding still occurs (most recently in 2014) dams and other diversions have diminished its regular flow considerably.

Rodeo in Pecos
GOOD-NATURED CONTEST BECOMES ANNUAL EVENT The date was 1883 -- July 4, to be exact. It was on that date in the small West Texas town of Pecos that a "top cowboy" was named in local competition and a rodeo tradition was born. Pecos was the trade center of the area's cattle empire at the time, the place where cowboys congregated on payday to spend their time and their cash and to brag a little, or a lot, about their exploits and their skills. The first rodeo may have been an informal test of skills, a good-natured local contest to pick the top ropers and riders from the huge and competitive area ranches. But, there was cash money posted for the winners -- $25 for top spot, and a $15 second prize -- and barbecue was to be provided for spectators and contestants alike. That first rodeo drew quite a crowd, approximately 1,000 people. And the top cowboy turned out to be Morgan Livingston of the NA Ranch, with Trav Windham of the Lazy Y taking home the second prize. Henry Slack, who may have been the youngest participant, noted that it wasn't a "wild and wooly" contest, but that it was conducted in a "quiet and orderly manner." Slack gave up
30
the cowboy life for business, but remained an avid supporter of the rodeo, and either led or rode in local rodeo parades when they were instituted in the 1930s. He died in 1944. The rodeo tradition continues to this day: The West of the Pecos Rodeo has grown into a four day event, including bull riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling and tie down roping, along with family-oriented events like the children's boot scramble and wild cow milking. The celebration, now held in June, also includes a traditional parade and an Old Timers Reunion. The times may have changed, and Pecos may not be the cattle drive capital of the West any longer, but the tradition continues. And, if anyone should dispute the Pecos claim of being the birthplace of the rodeo, local residents simply point to authentication

by Encyclopedia Britannica in response to documentation provided by the local newspaper. Pecos is named as the host of "the first public cowboy contest wherein prizes were awarded to the winners of bronco riding and steer roping." Today, the rodeo is a non-profit, board directed organization that aims to preserve this annual event for years to come. Plan to attend on June 24-27, 2015. Learn more at PecosRodeo.com.
