Louis Telles: Fifty Years in the Real Estate Business, Still Going Strong By Erin Feldman Real Estate Weekly Louis Telles, a real estate agent and REALTOR in El Paso, Texas, has been in the real estate business for fifty years. He says that his success is due to his upholding of two values: honesty and hard work, or “hustle” as he calls it. Telles began his real estate career early in life; prior to joining the U.S. Air Force, he worked part-time in real estate. His real estate mentor encouraged him to get his real estate license, which Telles did while employed by the Air Force. His journey to get that license was a lengthy one; he had to travel to Big Spring, Texas to take the licensing test because, at the time, El Paso only offered the test every six months. After being discharged from the Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Telles returned to El Paso to begin his career in real estate. It was a rough start; Telles had very few contacts in the El Paso community and ultimately had to find other work. He began working for Midland Specialty as an expeditor, but he continued to keep his real estate license current. Eventually, Telles returned to the real estate business part-time. He would work all day for Midland Specialty, run home at five to get dinner and to clean up, and head to his parttime job with AAA Real Estate. He would then work from six to nine, and sometimes ten, o’clock at night. Telles began to sell two or three homes per week. He soon built up enough of a backlog of homes that he was able to quit his job at Midland Specialty and go into the real estate business full-time. For several years, Telles worked with a partner from his current location, built by the late George Thomas, at 8533 Dyer Street. Telles described his partner as the “talker” and himself as the “grunt.” Telles’ “grunt” work paid off; he bought out his partner in the early

1960’s. Today, Telles’ real estate business is primarily a family one. His wife, Soledad, works as a secretary for their company, Missile Real Estate Company. Their son, Gerald, whom Telles calls his “right-hand man,” works with the company as a real estate broker. Telles has received offers to join other real estate companies but he always decided to remain independent. He also considered opportunities further west but decided against them. With the economic recession, Telles is glad he chose not to invest in those opportunities; as he says, “Not all that glitters is gold.” In fact, many people living in those western areas, such as Arizona and California, have been some of the ones hardest hit by the recession. When asked what effects the economic recession has had on him and his business, Telles replied that business had slowed but that he had not been particularly
affected. He mentioned that he had learned long ago to diversify his interests, which has helped him to survive the real estate slump. He remarked, “When the grass is green, save for the rainy day.” Telles also spoke of the recession’s effects on the real estate business in general. He noted that the number of REALTORS and real estate agents has decreased in the past few years, probably due to the costs associated with licensing and keeping licenses current. Telles also spoke of some of the challenges associated with the real estate business. He remembers many customers who merely wanted a Sunday afternoon drive without having to pay taxi fare. Since Telles typically used his own car to drive customers to houses he was selling, he put many miles on his car, wore out numerous tires, and spent much of his salary on gasoline. Telles also remembers the simple contracts, usually two pages maximum, that he used to write for homebuyers. These contracts could be written in fifteen minutes, which expedited the closing process. Unfortunately, these shorter contracts often left out pertinent parts, resulting, in some cases, in legal action. He said that the longer contracts of today, while challenging and timeconsuming, are beneficial since they attempt to encompass every single detail, lowering the risk of legal action or a case of “he said, she said.” When asked if Telles had any advice for someone wanting to get into the real estate business, he returned to his values of hard work and honesty. He remarked, “Keep your nose clean, and you’ll make it far.”
