T

he way a home is designed can say a lot of things about it. In fact, many real estate professionals and contractors can determine when a home was built based on the design of its interior. For example, homes with sunken living rooms were likely built sometime in the 1960s and 1970s. Open concept living rooms are one trend that might one day make people nostalgic for the early 21st century. Many of today’s home buyers want homes with open concept floor plans, which can give homes a more spacious feel, perhaps even creating the illusion that a home is bigger than it really is. Home buyers who have never before enjoyed open concept floor plans can consider these benefits to these wildly popular layouts.

ENTERTAINMENT

Many people who live in homes with open concept floor plans cite their convenience when entertaining as one of their biggest assets. In an open concept home, guests don’t have to be corralled into a single room in the home. Instead, hosts and their guests can roam freely from room to room because there are no walls dividing common areas. This can make gatherings feel less cramped than in homes with more traditional floor plans.

The safety of open concept floor plans may be most applicable to parents of young children. Open concept floor plans allow parents to keep an eye on their children while cooking dinner, working from home or tending to other chores around the

Take a walk through Owensboro’s Griffith area, and you’ll come away with stars in your eyes. Leafy streets are lined with stately homes, and pedestrians and drivers alike enjoy sightseeing among the neighborhood’s gems. Now, the ultimate question: How would you like to own one of those gems? The home at 829 Griffith Ave., a brick bungalow set along Owensboro’s picturesque Dogwood Azalea Trail, is 3,223 square feet and was built in 1920. Charles Massie and his wife, Carolyn, purchased the property in 1972 and called it home for 46 years. That name likely sounds familiar. Charles was well known for his exceptional talent at crafting fine furniture, and over the course of 55 years, he cre-

ated 90 pieces of 18th century Chippendale furniture. His home shows a similar attention to precision and detail. A house that his daughter Cathy Clements calls “quality built,” it’s lovingly adorned with antique light fixtures and hardwood in the kitchen and hallway that Charles put down himself. Elegant chair railing, crown molding and custom baseboards leave no corner unembellished. Families can spread out in the formal dining room, living room, sitting room, five bedrooms and two expansive full baths — the latter a rarity in a pre-war house — and enjoy two fireplaces, with a breathtaking, rare bird’s-eye maple mantel framing the one in the master bedroom. A window-lined sun porch stands at the back of the house, positioned to be drenched in sunlight. A few of the case-

ment windows can wind out to catch the breeze on pleasant days. Cathy says it was her father’s favorite room. “My dad lived on that back porch,” Cathy says. The sun porch overlooks the privacyfenced, woodland back yard, featuring holly trees that Charles planted himself. At nearly one full acre, the lot is secluded and peaceful. “Back there, you feel like you’re sitting in a park,” Cathy says. “He fed the birds ever y day — he had cardinals galore.” The house includes a large unfinished basement, updated windows and a new heating unit that’s only a few months old. A three-car garage with carport and Charles’ woodworking workshop round out the property. Cathy attests that the park-like set-

ting extends through the entire area, with a certain friendliness enveloping the neighborhood. “There are wonderful neighbors,” Cathy says. “We sat out on that (front) porch, and people would walk by and say hi. It’s just a different atmosphere.” In addition to being tucked into a beautiful, friendly neighborhood, 829 Griffith Ave. is only a short walk from enter tainment and education venues such as Owensboro High School, Moreland Park, the Owensboro Health Healthpark and the Daviess County Public Library.
