House not ready for entertaining? These tips can help BY BRANDPOINT
W
hether hosting family and friends for your first or fifteenth time, you want your home to be ready to impress. Here are five simple ways to make sure your home is refreshed and ready for any entertaining occasion.
REPAIR IMPERFECTIONS AND PAINT ON WALLS
It's inevitable that scuffs and scratches will appear on walls over time. A fresh coat of paint in key areas, like the living room, bathroom and guest bedroom, will help the entire home feel clean and fresh. Be sure to first prep walls by filling holes and cracks with spackling compound for a smooth finished surface. DAP DryDex Spackling takes the guesswork out of drying time with an indicator that goes on pink and dries white so you know when it's ready to sand and paint.
Small updates like adding plants, rugs and throws to your space are low cost but high impact. REFRESH KITCHEN COUNTERS
Since the kitchen is where people mingle the most, don’t leave old, dirty caulk to be the focal point behind your delicious spread! Spruce up your countertop and backsplash by removing and replacing the old caulk. Consider using a caulk that’s formulated specifically to ward off dirt and mold.
CLEAN AND PREP THE FLOORS
If you have the time, schedule a carpet cleaning before your guests are scheduled to arrive. And, consider applying a fast-drying polish to hardwood floors for a squeaky-clean
finish. It's also a good idea to keep a multi-surface vacuum in an easy-to-access location for quick spot cleans and pick-ups.
SALVAGE BROKEN DÉCOR
Don't fret when you notice a décor item has cracked or broken. Instead, grab a strong, fast-setting glue to make simple, long-lasting repairs before guests arrive. DAP RapidFuse All Purpose Adhesive sets in 30 seconds and is two times more durable than other super glues - there's even a plastic primer available that will help with hard-to-fix plastic décor.
UPDATE DECORATIVE ACCESSORIES
Small updates like adding plants, rugs and throws to your space are low cost but high impact. Lighting is another quick change that can really help warm a space. Consider swapping out the shades on your lamps or installing updated light fixtures for an entirely new look, but for a fraction of the cost.

timeless STORY BY JODI KEEN MESSENGER-INQUIRER
PHOTOS BY DALTON ADKINS ADKINS MEDIA
While the Copper Creek subdivision boasts many attractive homes, the brick beauty at 3652 Briarcliff Trace is particularly alluring. An impressive gem with the elegance of a southern manor, this home was built in 1994 by Larry and Lamone Mayfield and exudes grace and charm. Passersby may feel a curious familiarity about the property, and that feeling is well-founded: The Mayfields modeled the house after the Whitehaven mansion (now a welcome center) in Paducah, right down to its grand, semi-circle portico, stately columns and floor plan. So dedicated was Lamone to matching the design that she visited Whitehaven and measured the structure — everything from the dimensions of an individual brick
to the circumference of the columns. “I knew the size house we were going to build, so I wanted the ratios to be the way they should,” she says. “We were building a new house, but we wanted to make it look older, so if we weren’t careful, we were going to miss the whole concept.” That attention to detail continues inside. The entryway is paved with marble hailing from the 1800s. Gleaming hardwood stretches throughout the main level, past a gas log fireplace, through a vaulted foyer flanked by more Ionic columns (another call-out to Whitehaven), and up the chandelier-topped staircase to the second floor. The remodeled kitchen flawlessly embraces an open concept and features a stunning pass-through bar. Elegant touches include a marble backsplash and counters topped with quartz and granite. “I like openness, period,” Lamone says, “and it seems like the openness between the breakfast room and kitchen was the
most practical fit for us. The kitchen was between the dining room and breakfast room; if you closed that in, it was going to feel too small. To open it up ... it made it to where you could converse with whoever was in the breakfast area (without leaving the kitchen.)” A mother-in-law suite and laundry facilities sit on the main level, while upstairs are the master suite and two bedrooms joined by a Jack-and-Jill bath. The walk-out basement’s entryway features room for an upright piano, a sitting area and a stunningly detailed tray ceiling. The living room and bar area sit beneath intricate ceiling tiles traced by chiseled vertical dentil crown molding. There’s also space for a fitness room, office, storage, a fifth bedroom and another full bath. “I can’t tell you how the house has been so right for us,” Lamone says. “We have enjoyed that house; it’s been perfect for our needs. We’ve had people come visit
and stay for an extended period of time.” In fact, the Mayfields’ home has simultaneously — and comfortably — housed multiple generations of their family. “It’s been THE house for us,” Lamone says. “It worked out beautifully that we could do that.” At 5,261 square feet, 3652 Briarcliff Trace is a formidable size, but doesn’t feel it. The floor plan flows easily, and large, strategically placed windows broaden the interior with natural light. Above all, it’s classy but not stuffy; its elegance is warm and welcoming, and lacks pretension. The result is a beautiful, comfortable place to call home. “I tried not to (design) it just in tune with that era,” Lamone says, “but I wanted it to be in style whatever year you were in, so that it would be timeless.” Scott Lyons, L. EASY PROJECTS THAT
TRANSFORM YOUR BATHROOM
BY BRANDPOINT
UPDATE AN EXISTING VANITY
If you have a dated vanity that has good bones, there's no need to replace it. You can take charge with some DIY elbow grease and update it instead. For example, if you have a honey oak vanity that you want to update to a more current style, start by removing all hardware and cover to protect floors and vanity top. Then sand the surface and paint with primer so it's ready for your choice of color and finishes. Next, paint the entire vanity in the color of your choice. Gray vanities are currently popular and will project a contemporary feeling while white is timeless and conveys cleanliness. Another trend is to feature color on the bathroom vanity, such as blue or green, which adds visual interest to the space. Depending on your preference you might finish with a gloss for a modern look or distress the edges for a farmhouse style. Complete the upgrade with new hardware and you'll have an entirely new look in your bathroom.
UPGRADE FLOORING FOR CUSTOM STYLE
It's simple to put a fresh coat of paint on the ceiling so when you look up, your bathroom appears clean and updated. But what about when you look down? If the floors have seen better days, it's time to replace them. You may long for marble tile or exotic wood floors, but these projects are expensive and can be time-consuming. Luckily, there are many affordable modern vinyl options that are humidity safe, slip resistant and durable, making them ideal for use in the bathroom. Today's vinyl has come a long way from the cheap-looking sheets from decades ago. With a little research you can discover modern vinyl options made to look like myriad materials including mosaic tile, natural stone, wood planks and more. Often you can use the existing floor as the sub-floor, so there's no need to remove it. Always research the manufacturer's recommendations, but typically modern vinyl flooring is easy to install with features that snap together and are
simple to cut to size.
ADD SUBWAY TILE BATH SURROUNDS
Custom tile bath projects are complex and costly, but the new Traverse bath and shower solution from Sterling Plumbing makes it simple to update your space with style and functionality. The uniquely designed four-piece wall set is easy to move and install, with a clean, contemporary style featuring a glossy subway tile facade that is manufactured out of proprietary Vikrell material that provides strength, durability and beauty. Installing a Traverse is easy because it has smaller components for trouble-free transportation around corners and up and down stairways that lead to the bathroom. The self-guiding alignment and tongueand-groove joints make installation straightforward and minimizes future maintenance. Additionally, Sterling’s patented Dry-Block seal and water containment channels form watertight seams for a caulk-free installation. Learn more at www.sterlingplumbing.com.

Looking to buy a home? 2020 may be your year BY STATEPOINT
If buying a home is on your near-future to-do list, experts say that 2020 may be a good year to make it happen. Mortgage interest rates are near historic lows, providing you with the opportunity to finance a new home purchase at a much lower cost. According to a new forecast from Freddie Mac, mortgage rates will stay in the 3-4 percent range for all of 2020 and 2021, giving prospective homeowners substantial time to plan their purchase. This, combined with modest inflation and a solid labor market, makes for good climate to buy a home with a fixed rate mortgage. For those who are already homeowners, refinancing now may be a good idea. “For those serious about homeownership, today’s sub 4 percent mortgage rates should not be taken for granted,” says Freddie Mac chief economist Sam Khater. “For comparative purposes, in 2000, rates averaged eight percent; and in the ’80s, they spiked to 18.5 percent.” Khater stresses that while mortgage rates are an essential factor to consider in the home-buying process, there are other important items to think about as well as you lay the groundwork for your purchase. These include getting a firm handle on your finances, knowing your credit score (and taking steps to boost it if necessary) and familiarizing yourself with down payment options. hile vacations sound like the best chance to unwind, planning a trip out of town — and getting there — can sometimes be more hassle than it’s worth. Here’s how to turn your home into a staycation “destination” that can be enjoyed any time you feel like it: • Upgrade bedding: Give your bedroom a five-star hotel-grade makeover so you can enjoy that quality of rest found only on vacation. Shop for percale linens and high-quality pillows and invest in window treatments that block out sound and light, so you can awaken when you choose to, not when the sun or neighbors inter vene. • Create a spa-like bathroom: Find your bliss by creating a spa-like retreat in your bathroom. Start by clearing unsightly clutter and using coordinating dispensers for bath products. Paint the walls in a hue that promotes relaxation — think earthy tones, blues and greens, then
add plants or fresh flowers for a pop of vibrant color. Dimmer switches, waterproof speakers and a waterfall showerhead with different spray settings are just a few updates offering you flexibility to create different moods, all which can connect to a smart home device that remembers your preferences. For that warm, cozy feeling right out of the bath or shower, add in-floor heating and a towel warming drawer. • Add backyard touches: Show your backyard some love with a little landscaping and a few touches that replicate that vacation feel. An outdoor bar and kitchen can give you a dedicated place to wine and dine without having to constantly go in and out of the house. Install a hammock for long afternoons spent with a book. • Explore financing options: When it comes to transforming your home into the ultimate destination, you won’t want to cut
corners on what matters most to you, whether that’s opting for the superior flat screen TV or getting just the right coffee table to complete the look of your living room. To that end, check out easy and convenient financing options that offer buying empowerment and flexibility, such as the Synchrony HOME Credit Card. Using the card, you can shop for home goods at over a million home-related retail locations nationwide, earning 2 percent back on purchases under $299, or 6 months promotional financing on purchases of $299 or more ever ywhere the card is accepted. In some cases, you can take advantage of even longer-term promotional financing offers, ranging from 12 to 60 months. Being able to pay off home purchases with convenient monthly payments can make life easier, helping you manage cash flow and compartmentalize spending on all things home.
