Enhance your home garden by installing
water features H
omeowners can employ many different design techniques to create one-of-a-kind properties. Adding a water feature to a landscape is one such technique. Water gardens, koi ponds or fountains have been home landscaping trends for the past several years. Although water features can add an element of relaxation to landscapes, such features require maintenance to keep them attractive and running properly.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT DESIGN
Homeowners should create a water feature design that is fitting with the scale and style of their homes while also keeping their lifestyles in mind. Ponds are popular water features and, like pools, come in both inground and above-ground styles. Above-ground ponds are easier and faster to build than inground ponds and may be safer options for parents of young children. Streams and waterfalls also are popular and can make use of natural variations in property grading. Fountains can be freestanding structures or a component of a pond or another body of water. Recognize that the location of the water feature can impact its maintenance. For example, a fountain or pond located directly under deciduous trees will
require more frequent cleaning to remove leaf and tree debris. Ponds that receive direct sunlight may have more pronounced algae growth. Homeowners should work with a skilled water garden expert in planning the feature’s design and location with safety and upkeep in mind.
FIND A BALANCE
The wrong balance of conditions in the water can cause problems. According to the experts at This Old House, which offers ideas and advice for old house enthusiasts, algae can be the root of all evil in garden features. Controlling nutrients, which may involve watching the levels of nitrogen compounds and phosphorous, will help control the algae. Avoid locating the water feature where lawn and garden runoff will find its way into the water. Filtration and routine testing of water levels also can help. Water features that are not meant to become wildlife habitats may benefit from a mild sanitizer to keep algae at bay. A thorough cleaning of liners at the end of the season to eliminate materials that build up on the bottom can help, too.
MAINTAIN THE PUMPS
Water features require the constant flow of
water to prevent stagnation and proliferation of mosquito and other insect lar vae. That requires a pump to push the water around. According to Grounds Maintenance, a green industr y professionals resource, the pump should be securely situated on level ground so that vibrations will not cause the pump to move around and eventually loosen fittings. Even pumps protected by an intake filter or screen can become clogged with debris. It’s necessar y to routinely inspect the screen and the pump filter and remove any obstructions. Other wise, the pump motor can overheat and malfunction. Keep in mind that debris also may include animal life, such as frogs, snakes, turtles — anything that may be drawn to the water feature.
PREPARE FOR WINTER
When colder weather arrives, homeowners must decide if they want to keep the water feature running or shut it down. Many experts say smaller ponds should be drained, cleaned and left empty until spring. This is also a time to cut back the dead plant material and remove any tropicals from the water. Remove pumps and drain water feature lines so they can overwinter without freezing.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME STORY BY JODI KEEN MESSENGER-INQUIRER
PHOTOS BY GLENN ASHBY REMAX
First impressions count for a lot, and especially so when shopping for a place to call home. 3306 Shadewood Terrace, in the southeast portion of Owensboro, offers a quiet, cheerful confidence that sweeps you into the front door and continues through the entire house. Right from the start, Alan and Lisa Lawrence’s home makes a lasting impression with its attention to detail. The front porch of this Dutch Colonialstyle home is tucked past the two-car garage at the front, angled just so to create a charming, cottage-like space to privately welcome guests. The interior is laid out to encourage engagement in the common areas and allows them to be flooded with natural light. And an abundance of space provides limitless customization opportunities. For example, the flex space adjacent to the entryway can serve as a dining room, library or sitting area; the Lawrences
chose to make it a home office. Modern fixtures, custom built-ins and a gas log fireplace dress up the great room, while the gourmet kitchen features custom cabinets, detailed moldings, granite countertops and a breakfast bar. Built in 2013 as a show house by Recommended Homes, the Lawrences found that 3306 Shadewood Terrace had everything they were looking for in a home. “The house itself was the right amount of space for us,” Alan says. “Everything we need is on the main level. Having the master bedroom on the main floor — that was something really nice that we liked.” The large master suite includes a separate shower, jetted tub and walk-in closet. Two additional bedrooms and a bathroom are on the second level. The bedrooms are spacious and cozy, with one enjoying angled ceilings that are more traditionally found in pre-war homes. The Lawrences appreciate how the floor plan spaces out living and gathering areas. “We loved the open concept kitchen-
living room,” Alan says. “And upstairs was two bedrooms and another living area. … When our daughter was living at home and going to college, she had her own living area and friends could visit. They’d have their own space to be, so everyone’s happy and not underfoot.” The back yard is hemmed in by a privacy fence and spacious enough for a garden, shed and outdoor activities and gatherings. A covered deck ambles from the house to the patio grilling area. Another plus is that 3306 Shadewood Terrace employs zoned heating and cooling for the 1,504-square-foot first floor and 796-square-foot second floor, leading to more efficient energy usage and, therefore, lower utility bills. The Lawrences have also enjoyed their home’s proximity to shopping, attractions and recreation. “The neighborhood is fantastic,” Alan says. “It’s centrally located. It’s only a few minutes to downtown, or to the Frederica shopping area. And it’s right beside the Greenbelt” — a short walk, in fact, from the Dairy Queen on U.S. 231 that is a
favorite relaxing point for families enjoying the Greenbelt. Another plus for the Lawrences is the quality of the neighborhood. “The neighbors are ver y friendly. They all look out for each other,” Alan says. “They have had block parties. Someone organizes a contact sheet so we all know how to get in touch with each other.” “It’s also a cul-de-sac, so there’s not a lot of thru traffic,” Lisa adds. The Lawrences have enjoyed the quality of their home on Shadewood Terrace so much that they’ve contracted Recommended Homes to build their new place. And they’re leaving 3306 Shadewood Terrace with the same confidence they had when they first walked in. “Because it was a show house, it has a lot of high-end features,” Alan says. “We really didn’t have to do anything else (when we bought it). The maintenance on the house is really low, and everything is pretty high quality.” Glenn Ashby, REMAX

Tips for waterproofing a basement or crawl space
W
ater can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. Few things have the potential to damage a home as much as water. From leaks to flooding to moisture problems like mold, water can wreak havoc on a home. Basements or crawl spaces are areas of a home where water can do the most damage. Basements and crawl spaces Many building tend to be the lowest-lying spots in a home, and therefore materials, prime spots for water to enter. including Water problems in these areas concrete, that can contribute to the demise of seem solid at the structural integrity of the foundation. first glance According to Olshan, a actually are foundation solutions company, quite porous. water can enter homes in numerous ways. Many building materials, including concrete, that seem solid at first glance actually are quite porous. As ground water collects around these materials, the weight of the accumulated water, called hydrostatic pressure, can weaken the materials, causing
cracks where water can seep through. Water also can enter subterranean spaces through basement windows and gaps between footings and concrete slabs, or push up through foundation floors when homes are in areas with high water tables. Remedying water issues in a home generally breaks down into two methodologies: exterior waterproofing and interior waterproofing. Depending on the cause and severity of the water issue, one or the other, or even both, may be recommended.
EXTERIOR WATERPROOFING
Exterior waterproofing aims to keep water away from and out of the home. The home improvement information resource DoItYourself.com says that exterior waterproofing generally includes the application of a waterproofing agent to the concrete foundation. In addition, exterior waterproofing also could include excavation so a drainage system can be installed around the entire footing of the home. Regrading a property and properly relocating gutters and downspouts can help with many water issues.
INTERIOR WATERPROOFING
When water in a basement or crawl space needs to be remediated indoors, a system to collect, drain and remove water may be necessar y. This can include sump pumps, drains, gravity discharge systems, and more. Moisture barriers, which can include special paints or products applied to the foundation walls and floor, also can help keep water from entering the space.
MOISTURE SOLUTIONS
Keeping water out is only one part of the equation. Homeowners also need to manage moisture, like excessive humidity. A marriage of HVAC and waterproofing techniques may be necessar y to improve air flow and remove humidity in the air. While some homeowners may have the knowledge to attempt to address water issues on their own, many times it is a job best left to the professionals. Because water penetration can have multifaceted causes, a professional can best assess the situation and create solutions that fit with homeowners’ budgets and needs.
