Perennial gardening pointers for successful blooms year after year
G
ardening is an engaging hobby that can provide a host of benefits, some of which may surprise even the most devoted gardeners. For example, the Harvard Medical School notes that just 30 minutes of gardening activities burns 135 calories, making gardening a fun and simple way to incorporate more exercise into your daily routine. In addition, scientists have long proven that gardening releases the hormones serotonin and dopamine in the brain, each of which are associated with improved mood. Perennial gardens can be especially attractive to seasoned gardeners and novices. Perennials are plants that come back year after year, and committing to a perennial garden can ensure people stick with gardening for the long haul, reaping all of the rewards that come with making such a commitment. Before planting a perennial garden, those new to gardening may want to consider these three tips.
Perennials promise beautiful blooms each year, along with plenty of exercise and a rewarding partnership for gardeners
MAKE A PLAN
A perennial garden comes back year after year, which means any mistakes you make when planting are likely to haunt you year after year as well. Factors like space and location must be considered before planting. Many gardeners utilize garden planning applications like GrowVeg to make the process of planning a garden simpler and more organized. Such applications can be especially useful for novices.
CONSIDER AESTHETICS
Gardens can be awe-inspiring, especially when gardeners consider aesthetics prior to planting. The DIY Network advises gardeners to consider scale before choosing which perennials to plant. Tall plants and wide beds tend to look best outside large homes, while short plants in small beds tend to look better outside small homes.
WORK WITH A PROFESSIONAL
Local garden centers can be excellent resources when planning perennial gardens. Representatives at such businesses can offer tips on native plants, which will be more likely to thrive year after year than non-natives. Such representatives also can help you choose the right plants based on the amount of sunlight the plants will likely get after being planted. Each of these factors can be easily overlooked by people without much gardening experience.

Bring comfort and style to your outdoor space You’re probably used to making some concessions when it comes to comfort, style and convenience in your home’s outdoor spaces. What many homeowners are learning is that nearly anything that can be achieved in interior spaces can likewise be achieved in exterior ones. However, there are a few things to keep in mind in order to update these spaces safely and for maximum effect. Here are a few ideas to consider:
CREATE A ‘ROOM’
One aspect of creating the feel of a “room” in your home’s outdoor spaces is defining its boundaries. Get creative with the notion of floor, ceiling and walls. Sometimes, these elements work better when they’re more of a suggestion than an impermeable structure. Whether it’s a latticed trellis that allows you to view the stars, a manicured hedge to create privacy or a sunken “living room” set off by a retaining wall, there are plenty of charming means for setting an
outdoor area apart from the space around it. If your project requires digging, it’s important to call 811, a free nationwide number, in order to determine where underground utility lines are and avoid them.
AIR AND LIGHT
Think the form and function of ceiling fans, chandeliers and pendant lights are for interior spaces only? Think again. Such stylish fixtures can be added over patios, verandas or pergolas to add the level of elegance and comfort one could traditionally only enjoy indoors. However, if you do plan to add any such electrical device to an exterior space, you must do so safely by opting for weatherproof installation, as well as fixtures designed specifically for the outdoors. Whether performing this upgrade on your own or hiring a contractor, consider products such as the “Outdoor Comforts” line from the Bell Outdoor brand of Hubbell Incorporated. The line’s new Bell Outdoor Ceiling

Fan Box, which provides a safe and secure mounting and weatherproof wiring junction specifically for outdoor fans, chandeliers or pendant lights, is designed to enhance outdoor living spaces with the same convenience and comfort you enjoy indoors. To learn more about cost-effective solutions for upgrading outdoor areas with weatherproof fans or luminaries, visit hubbell.com/bell/en.
FINISHING TOUCHES
If it’s been awhile since you furnished your backyard, you may be surprised by the scope of weatherproof furnishings, cushions, pillows and even rugs available on the market today. If you’re overdue for an upgrade, consider padding out your patio to make the time spent in your outdoor space as comfortable as an afternoon curled up on the couch in the family room. To extend the life of certain items, you may want to bring them under cover during extreme weather events, as well as the off-season.

stunning
STORY BY JODI KEEN MESSENGER-INQUIRER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK RUSH PHOTOGRAPHY
Exquisite, sensible, safe, convenient — all these words can be justifiably deployed to describe the year-old stunning home at 4992 Jessica Lane in elegant Stone Crest. A spacious one-level abode with three beds, two-and-a-half baths, a sweeping front porch and forward-thinking design, this 2,912-square-foot property is a gem for its charm, convenience, location and details. “We were looking to buy a house, but we couldn’t find anything at that time that suited us,” owner Connie Hahn says. “Dear friends told us about Mike Martin and what an excellent builder he is.” Pointed toward Martin Custom Building’s new development in Stone Crest, “We came over here and thought it was beautiful,” Connie says. “We bought a lot here that’s up on a hill. It kind of overlooks everything. It’s just beautiful.” “We had an idea of what we wanted since we had built in the past,” she adds. “We wanted one story and a very
open floor plan.” The result is a sweeping brick home with elegant touches, sensible planning and limitless amenities. Inside, solid built-ins flank the gas fireplace — which features a secure magnetic screen with glass wire from Steinkamp Home Center — in the expansive living room, which opens directly into the dining room and gourmet kitchen. The latter features solid Amish-built cabinets, a double oven and space for a microwave hidden in a cabinet so as not to disrupt the room’s clean look. The bedrooms are plotted out in a split plan. Having lived through the severe weather than can befall Texas, Connie added a safe room to the house, ensuring a secure location inside the one-level home to seek shelter from a storm. Well thought-out details dot the property, adding to the home’s charm. Dimmer switches pepper the house. Custom wood sliding doors — colored to match the front door — lead to a home office. Stars framed by the words “Welcome family and friends” hail from Texas and adorn the walkways outside. Art niches are tucked into walls to display the
homeowners’ collection of bronze work. The custom Hoffman draperies not only match the house’s colors for a seamless look; the shades are also nearly blackout, meaning those inside can see through them to the outside at night, but no one can see inside. While it’s clearly stylish, 4992 Jessica Lane is also heavily practical. It was specifically designed to be ADA compliant, and the guest rooms sharing the Jackand-Jill bath offer convenient, private living space for an in-home caretaker. A security system is in place. The attic is floored. The laminate hardwood is virtually scratch- and stain-resistant. The kitchen cabinets pull out so everything inside can be easily seen, and extra storage space is built into the kitchen island. Even the large Amish-built doggy dog is smartly planned: Pets can go in and out freely during the day, and at night, the door can be closed and locked. More attention to detail can be found outdoors: The covered porches offer relaxing views of sunrises and sunsets. Custom cement bricks hem in the shrubbery installed by Hobgood Landscaping, giving it a clean edge. A sprinkler system
is in place to keep the lawn looking fresh. The back yard fence is rooted in place with cement footers, making it easier to trim the yard’s edges. All gates on the fence have built-in locks. A very thin wire was also installed along the fence so small dogs can’t crawl out of the yard. Even the three-car garage goes the extra mile. Garage Experts in Evansville laid the custom flooring, sealing the concrete before applying epoxy to finish it. Designed deep to accommodate large vehicles, the garage includes hook-ups for an RV, generator and hose. The fuse box also includes protection against a surge or shortage in electricity. “Most of these things are not that expensive to do,” Connie says, “but it’s something that can really protect yourself in the future from something happening. “Homes are different in every part of the country,” she adds, and homebuyers will benefit from the sharpened observations these owners employed when building 4992 Jessica Lane. Says Connie: “It comes from being a little bit older and knowing what you like.” Angela Clark, Tony Clark Realtors
