If the home at 4310 Spring Bank Drive isn’t familiar, the names that built it are. Elwood and JoAnn Castlen, longtime pillars of the Owensboro community, erected this home after founding Castlen Realty and raising their children. Serving as the home base for their golden years, the couple enjoyed about three decades in this lovely brick dwelling, enriching it with history, tradition and family. In need of a home to welcome their many relatives and friends, 4310 Spring Bank Drive was built on the original site of the Alexander Farm and, at 3,779 square feet, was specifically engineered for large family gatherings, entertaining and evenings spent enjoying the outdoors.

“Dad and Mother drew out the plans,” says Steve Castlen, longtime Realtor and the couple’s son. Paul Martin and Tommy Thompson built the custom home, the couple’s third in that area of town. “They built the other two homes (they’d had in the neighborhood) as well,” Steve says. “They put everything in that they wanted to.” Among the Castlens’ wishes were two masonry fireplaces, a spacious formal dining room with crown molding and lots of windows to let the light in the southfacing house. The chef’s kitchen is expansive and features a china cabinet large enough to hold an impressive collection. The impeccably updated owner’s suite on the main level includes a Whirlpool tub, separate shower and double vanity. Also upstairs are a guest bedroom, half bath and laundry facilities. The walkabout basement is equally impressive, with another fireplace

in the family room, a third bedroom and full bath, lower level air conditioning, a trove of storage space, and an office that can easily be converted into a fourth bedroom. “They had Christmas parties and Easter and Thanksgiving parties. It was one of the homes where everybody gathered, where everybody had plenty of room,” Steve says. “I appreciate them doing that.” Even in 1989, Elwood and JoAnn’s keen eye for real estate allowed them to design a comfortable home with timeless features and limitless appeal. The double-door entrance is fronted with glass and topped by an elegant transom window. Built-ins flank the great room fireplace, while a large wet bar sits adjacent. The master suite features a private balcony, and the guest bedroom on the main level includes a private bath — “which ended up working out great for

caregivers,” Steve adds. Porches tucked strategically around the house give it a wraparound feel, allowing Elwood, a gardening enthusiast, ample opportunity to rest and enjoy his work.
