ging people often take inventory of their lives in an effort to focus on activities or lifestyle changes that can ensure happy retirements. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows there are some 76 million baby boomers — those people born between 1946 to 1964 — across the country. With the youngest of the boomers in their mid-50s and the majority having already reached retirement age, many boomers are trying to decide if it’s time to move out of their family homes and into smaller, more manageable abodes. Many older adults find they do not need the same amount of space as they did when they had children living at home. Retirees and those on the cusp of retirement may find that downsizing is a smart financial move that frees up more time for recreation. However, it can be challenging to cut down on living space and then deal with figuring out how to make furniture, belongings and stored items fit in more condensed areas. Moving can be stressful even without having to cut down on prized items. Taking an inventory of belongings can help the process go smoothly. Before moving, go room by room, making piles of
items that will be kept, donated, sold or discarded. This can be a tedious task, but it is necessary to avoid clutter in a new home. People downsizing can attempt to sell items they do not need via newspaper classified sections or online classified sites. Appliances and furniture in excellent shape may fetch good prices. Any extra cash can be put toward buying new items that are size-appropriate for the smaller home. Another way to clear out clutter is to sort duplicates from the stock of items. There may no longer be a need for multiple sets of dishes or silverware. If the
move involves switching from a king-sized to a queen-sized bed, donate or trash bed linens that will no longer fit. Pay close attention to kitchen and bathroom items, which tend to accumulate over time but might not be discarded when clearing a home of clutter. Creative planning can help homeowners design dream areas perfect for hosting friends or family.

As with any project, the first step when coordinating outdoor living areas is to determine what you hope to achieve with the space. Will it be a location for lounging? Brazilian cherry floors, a shimmering antique crystal chandelier and wide doorways make the space feel fresh and inviting. (Ingeniously, the chandelier is on an electric lift so that it may be raised or lowered for cleaning.) To the left is a large dining room with a dramatic tray ceiling and one charming and
very rare feature: a pocket door to a butler’s pantry. The butler’s pantry is a useful and elegant touch, providing a space for service and storage. This one includes a wet bar, and the placement of the space — between the kitchen and the formal dining room — makes it accessible and useful. The family room and kitchen line the back of the home, and it is difficult to decide what is more compelling — the design and architecture of the spaces, or the views beyond it of the outdoor living spaces and the mesmerizing Ohio. Rounding out the downstairs are a formal living room, a powder room and a bedroom/bath combo that is large enough to serve as a secondary master. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms, including the
master. Each is oversized and has its own bath. The master suite is set apart by antique solid wood doors with antique glass and metal frames, which the Readers purchased in New Orleans, along with two very large antique marble cherub sculptures attached to the fireplace in the bedroom. The master bath is a luxurious retreat featuring a Jacuzzi tub and walk-in shower. All the fixtures are 24-karat gold plated, and everything is surrounded by natural travertine tile and moulding. A cherry-paneled elevator makes every level of the home accessible. Of course, the pinnacle of the home is the outdoor space. On each level there are both covered and uncovered patio spaces. Architectural brick makes for an elegant patio and pool deck. The lap-style pool has an automatic cover for safety and ease of maintenance. Lawn space for playing and/or pets is adjacent, and the entire area is surrounded by wrought iron fencing, which ups the safety factor without sacrificing the view. ccidents around the home happen. Some are minor and easily brushed off, while others can lead to serious injury or financial peril. Many accidents, even those that are relatively minor, can be prevented. Such is often the case with electrical accidents, which may be more common than many people think. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International, home electrical fires account for an estimated 51,000 fires each year, resulting in roughly 500 deaths and more than $1 billion in property damage. Homeowners who want to do all they can to reduce the likelihood of electrical mishaps at home can employ various strategies. • Be mindful of cords and plugs. Cords and plugs can be found throughout the typical home. While few people may perceive cords and plugs as threats, they can serve as catalysts for accident and/or injury. Cords and plugs should always be kept clear of heat and water sources, and cords should not be placed
in areas where they can pose any tripping hazards. Even if residents grow accustomed to cord locations and know to maneuver around them, guests won’t be as familiar. When pulling plugs from outlets, always pull the plug, and not the cord, to reduce injury risk. • Periodically take inventory of electrical appliances and components. Some electrical appliances age well, while

others may not. Periodic inspections of appliances and their components, such as their cords, can reveal wear and tear that can lead to fires or injuries. Replace any items that pose a threat and stop using these items immediately. • Avoid DIY electrical work. Many homeowners are handy with hammers and other tools, but professionals are better trusted to perform electrical work
on a home. The risk of accident or injury when working with wiring and other electrical components is simply too great for untrained homeowners to do on their own. • Unplug appliances before flipping a fuse. Fuses blow from time to time. Some may be knocked out by especially powerful storms, while others may blow because they’re overloaded. Regardless of why fuses blow, homeowners should turn off appliances on blown fuses before flipping those fuses back on. Leaving appliances running when flipping a fuse can increase the risk of fire or accident. Turn off appliances, unplug them and then turn them back on one by one after the fuse has been flipped. • Be especially cautious if anyone smells gas. Gas leaks are often detected by the aroma of the gas in the air. When such leaks are detected, homeowners should not touch or turn any electrical switches. Doing so may create a spark that can react with the gas in the air, leading to fire. If a gas leak is detected, go outside and contact a local emergency service.

Is that junk in your attic or basement worth a fortune? BY STATEPOINT
From baseball cards and spor ts equipment to postcards and toys, is that “junk” in your attic or basement dusty treasure or just dusty? We’ve all heard of families getting rich from the sale of rare memorabilia. So how can you tell if your stuff is valuable and how can you sell it, if it is? “The general rule is that the older the item, the more valuable it is. 1980 is not old. 1960 is kind of old. 1910 is old,” says Al Crisafulli, Auction Director at Love of the Game Auctions, an internet sports auction house that has helped many families identify and sell valuable items. In one instance, Crisafulli determined that a family’s baseball bat that spent decades beside their front door to protect from intruders, was actually used by Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig — and Love of the Game Auctions sold it for them for more than $430,000. He is of fering these tips to help determine if your items are valuable.
BASEBALL CARDS
Cards from the 1960s and earlier are collectible, and those from before the 1940s can be extremely pricey. Do they have sharp corners, no creases and retain original gloss? Do they depict star players and Hall of Famers? A Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner or Mickey Mantle will sell for more than non-stars. With particularly old cards from the 1880s and early 1900s, look for tobacco and candy brands, such as Old Judge, Piedmont, Sweet Caporal or American Caramel. Unopened packs from almost any era can be valuable.
MEMORABILIA & EQUIPMENT
Look for old adver tising posters depicting sports stars and food, tobacco or spor ting goods brands. This doesn’t mean ads torn from magazines, but those used as store displays and for other purposes. Tin signs are highly collectible from the 1900s into the 1960s, but low-quality reproductions aren’t. Pre-1950s catcher’s masks, baseball gloves and

Postcards of your vacation destinations likely are wor thless. But
those depicting famous people, such as movie star cards and vintage baseball postcards, can be valuable. Look for early “real photo” postcards from the 1900s through the 1940s, which are photographs printed on postcard backs. No matter the type, the older, the better, and the more famous, the better. Old Halloween or Christmas postcards from the early 1900s can be expensive. The same goes for many intricate “hold-to-light” postcards, where por tions of scenes light up when held to strong light.
TOYS
Look for famous characters, such as early Walt Disney items, superheroes, Star Wars, etc. The most prized toys are those in original condition with no broken pieces and paint intact. And if you have original boxes, you might strike gold! So, while you’re cleaning that attic, basement or garage, don’t r ush to purge. Before throwing out old “junk,” determine if it’s valuable!
