arbecue in Owensboro is a special thing. Like Nashville and country music and Georgia and peaches, barbecue has become the unofficial mascot of the city. In Owensboro, there are the “Big 3.” The three dominant powerhouses of barbecue, chicken and mutton — Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn, Old Hickory Bar-B-Que and Ole South Barbeque. All family owned and operated, these restaurants have been maintained by their respective families for generations. And each will tell you, it’s more than just food, it’s a way of life. When state officials, celebrities and presidents come to town, they visit one of three places — all barbecue joints. Owensboro natives recognize good barbecue, and it shows. wensboro Health is the dominant health care provider in the region. With more than 4,000 employees, they serve more than 950,000 people in a 12-county coverage area, including Indiana. After winning several Readers’ Choice awards, Brian Hamby, director of marketing and public relations, talked about how Owensboro Health serves the community and its positive influence. “Everything we do, we put the patient first,” Hamby said. “It’s a part of our organizational culture that we structure programming, we make decisions, we look at new opportunities through the lense of the patient. That’s what the health system does. “It’s why we built the new hospital,” he said. “It’s why we’ve added different

arms to the organization.” The reason why is because Owensboro Health wants to put patients first. “I think patients sense that when they enter the (Owensboro Health) Healthpark,” Hamby said. “The programs are geared for all different skill levels and exercise levels. It’s meant to engage a wide variety of people who can benefit from those benefits and services.” At The Women’s Pavilion, Hamby said the OBGYNs are outstanding at connecting to their patients and understanding their needs. “Expertise is a big part of it,” he said. “We think the medical expertise that is provided at both the Healthpark and the women’s services area is unparalleled. We think patients gravitate to the knowledge and expertise they provide. I think they’ve

begun to trust that and when you add in the human side of it, the connection, that’s what really resonates with people.” The staff at Owensboro Health wants to hear from people if there is something they can do to improve or if there are new services they can add. YMCA HELPS YOUNGSTERS LEARN TO SWIM

hat would summer be without days spent frolicking at the beach or afternoons spent splashing in the pool? Fun in the water makes hot days more enjoyable and bearable, and few summertime activities do not involve water play in one aspect or another. Although time spent in the water can be refreshing and entertaining, water does present certain hazards, particularly for those who do not know how to swim. Learning to swim, especially at a young age, is adviseable and a great way to remain safe around the water. The World Health Organization says drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death across the globe, accounting for 7 percent of all injury-related deaths. Children, males and individuals with increased access to water are most at risk of drowning. In general, children under five years of age have the highest drowning mortality

rates in the world. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents should consider swimming lessons for most children between the ages of one and four. New research has revealed that swimming instruction for children between the ages of one and four may decrease drowning risk. However, parents should be advised that swimming lessons do not remove all risk. Children still

REID’S ORCHARD Best Farm Market • Gold Choice It all started with a love for peaches. In 1873, Allan Reid left a little village in Scotland. Upon arriving in America and settling in Kentucky, he fell in love with peaches and apples. From the beginning, the orchard was an enterprise. The farm was passed down to his son, Robert Reid Sr., and when his sons, Robert Jr. and John, joined the business the name changed to Robert Reid and Sons Orchard. In 1978, Robert Reid Jr. left the business and John’s son, Billy, joined the family business now known as Reid’s Orchard. Billy Reid, present owner and grower, continues the tradition of new technology. Today, Reid’s Orchard produces strawberries, apples, peaches, blackberries, pears, cherries, all types of vegetables and fall decorations for its farm market. In 1986 the family initiated a gathering for the community; the Apple Festival, which today hosts 25,000 people during the third weekend in October. The Apple Festival has been named one of the top 10 festivals in Kentucky and one of the top 20 festivals in the southwestern states in the month of October. The Reid family wants to continue to diversify, to grow and to serve the community, but most especially, to pass the traditions on to the sixth generation.
