Parrish Avenue or Wonder Whip out on Kentucky 144. Both places are always busy, especially during lunch. Traffic is often congested in these areas, and people are lined up at the order window. Unlike the busy fast-food chains, both hamburger joints offer no indoor seating, just picnic tables outside their establishment. For the best dessert in Owensboro,

A RECIPE FOR Sweet potato hash INGREDIENTS 2 sweet potatoes 3 inches of grated ginger 2 tablespoon coconut oil 3 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon garlic powder

DIRECTIONS Wash and cube 2-3 sweet potatoes. Grate ginger and set aside. Measure 1 tablespoon garlic, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, mix together and set aside. Add 2 teaspoons coconut oil to a warm pan then add in cubed sweet potatoes, ginger and seasonings. Cook until potatoes pierce easily with a fork. For an added kick, add in freshly diced jalapeños. This year we had four students earn associate degrees and high school credentials simultaneously through our nationally recognized Discover College program. OCTC was one of 49 colleges in the nation named as a U.S. Department of Education Experimental Site. This program will allow qualified families the opportunity to access Pell grant funds while their student is still in high school to facilitate more students earning a high school diploma and an associate degree at the same time. OCTC provides an affordable and successful path for students wanting to earn a bachelor degree. By using the 2/2 approach — completing the first two years at OCTC followed by two years at Brescia University, Kentucky Wesleyan College, Western Kentucky University — Owensboro, or other state universities — students save more than $10,000 in tuition. Moreover, research at a major public four-year university shows that OCTC students outperform native students at the institution. Transfer students will have less college debt, thus improving their quality of life upon graduating. OCTC is currently constructing the new Industry Innovation Center thanks to generous community-wide support through the BuildSmart campaign. The building will allow us to move and expand the welding and HVAC programs, in addition to adding new training labs for robotic welding and building automated systems training, the opening should take place in the fall of 2017.

Smith reaches success after 10 years of hard work and dedication

lmost 10 years ago Melissa Smith opened her own tattoo parlor. Her first year in business, she brought in $30,000 and took a loss after all the expenses. In 2015, Lady Luck Tattoo and Body Piercing generated $300,000. Lady Luck, located on Scherm Road, is almost always bustling with people hanging out, drawing future tattoos or getting other work done. With six tattoo artists and three body piercers, Lady Luck is the biggest shop in Owensboro and the most popular according to this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Readersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Choice awards. But Smith said her success did not come easy. she saved gold dollars with the dream of buying her own shop. “Essentially, I bought the shop in gold coins,” she said. “Ever y night when I did the payroll, I would trade my own dollars for gold coins, then I threw them in a jar until I had enough to buy a shop. All by myself.” Now, Smith is at the point where she is reaping the benefits of years of hard work. “To get it off the ground you don’t have a second of free time,” Smith said. “It consumes your life. Some days I would get angr y and want to throw my equipment out on 4th Street. But overall, it’s probably the best job ever.” Day after day, she said there is always something new and different. “No two days are ever the same.” she said. “I think the best part of my day is interacting with people. Ever ybody is different, and ever ybody wants something different when they come in here.” Smith said one of her favorite parts of the job comes after the customer leaves her shop. “Being out at Walmart or Holiday World and having someone come up to me and say their tattoo still looks as good as the day they got it in the shop is really cool,” she said. Many of her customers learn about the shop from friends and previous clients, but Smith also updates a Facebook page frequently with pictures of the latest ink and piercings. She said glowing reviews from customers are a great way to promote her businesss, but she said she also thinks the tattoos are just as good promotion as any. “A lot of people like to talk about tattoos,” Smith said. “I tell them that getting a tattoo is not just about getting a tattoo, but it’s also about getting the experience. You have to make it a good experience for them. We want to have good customer ser vice.” Smith said she loves working with

clients to achieve a great piece of art they will enjoy forever. “Tattoos are about self-expression, not my expression,” Smith said. “The best thing is when you get to do both. You have clients who get what they want, but you get to add your own flair to it.” Smith has worked with some of her clients for years — tattooing their first ink to practically covering their body. She said one of her clients came in with no tattoos years ago and now

It all started with a love for peaches. In 1873, Allan Reid left a little village in Scotland. Upon arriving in America and settling in Kentucky, he fell in love with peaches and apples. From the beginning, the orchard was an enterprise. The farm was passed down to his son, Robert Reid Sr., when his sons Robert Jr. and John joined the business and the name changed to Robert Reid and Sons Orchard. Billy Reid, present owner and grower, continues the tradition of new technology. In 1986 the family initiated a gathering for the community; the Apple Festival, which today hosts 25,000 people during the third weekend in October The Apple Festival has been named as one of the Top 10 festivals in Kentucky and one of the Top 20 festivals in the southwestern states in the month of October. The Reid family wants to continue to diversify, to grow and to serve the community, but most especially, to pass the traditions on to the sixth generation.

or more than 40 years, brown wrapping paper with white polka dots has been a staple in Owensboro. Almost everyone knows the brown and white polka dots are a signature of The Bakers Rack, a local gift and home accessory store. After starting out as a plant store, selling 50-cent plants, the store grew from the demand of the customers. 64

After buying plants, people wanted vases and containers, and then other home accessory items. Now, the store sits tucked in the corner of the Wesleyan Park Plaza shopping center behind a brown and white awning and has more than 25,000 items ranging from baby shower gifts, home decor, kitchen accessories, barware, jewelry, Happy Everything accessories, Vera Bradley and so much more. Bryan Leazenby, who owns The Bakers Rack with his wife, Anne Baker Leazanby, said he sees many couples register for wedding gifts at his store because of the personal connection between staff and customer. Some of our best customers have never stepped foot into our store.” Gift wrapping in their signature polka dot paper is complimentary with every gift purchased and gift registries can also be viewed online. Staying true to its Kentucky roots, The Bakers Rack offers University of Kentucky serving trays, bottle openers, belts, coasters and more. Kentucky Mint Julep cups, derby-themed items and local cookbooks are also available. Along with a lot of types of gifts, there are lots of home decor and accessory items that can be self-gifts. Bryan Leazenby said there is something new almost every day at The Bakers Rack. “On any given day there are 25,000 items on our sales floor,” he said. “We don’t stock hundreds of any one item like Target and K-Mart and other big stores. Our selection is much wider

than that. UPS or FedEx is at our door practically every day.” The Leazanbys want to express their appreciation to their customers. “We certainly appreciate our customers,” Bryan Leazanby said. “They are why we are here. It’s fun coming in and being able to serve them on a daily basis. A lot of customers have become our friends.” “Owensboro has created us for 43 years,” Anne Baker Leazanby said. “We don’t stay in business without a strong community support system. Owensboro has been excellent to us, and we hope to continue to be a service to the community.” Anne Baker Leazanby said she wants to keep serving the community as the top gift store in Owensboro. Local boutique business is thriving one year after opening

ver y business owner wants to make their customers happy while selling a great product. LaRae Travis of The Pink Poppy has found this success with her boutique just one year after opening. The Pink Poppy is the platinum winner for the New Locally-Owned Business of the Year, and Travis could not be more excited. Travis opened The Pink Poppy on June 20, 2015, because of her love for

fashion and people. “This was just something I decided to do, so I set the plans and did it,” she said. “I love getting to see all of my customers and meeting new people.” But owning her own business didn’t come easy. She credits a lot of the behind-the-scenes hard work to her husband, parents and in-laws who helped her get the store ready to open. Travis said her dad and OWENSBORO

husband helped build the dominant Pink Poppy wall in her store, and her mom often pitches in to help around the store. Aside from owning her own business, Travis also works as a cosmetologist at All About You Salon, which is located right next door to The Pink Poppy. She said one of the highlights of owning a boutique in Owensboro is getting to see the items she sells on people across the county. “It’s fun going to an event like Miss Daviess County or something downtown and seeing women wear clothing and jewelr y they bought from my store,” she said. The Pink Poppy mainly carries women’s sizes extra small to 3XL, but also has mommy and me outfits, jewelr y, hats and other accessories. Travis travels to Atlanta about four times a year to a fashion market to order the clothes and jewelr y she stocks her boutique with. “I tr y not to get items that are too terribly expensive,” she said. “I tend to stick with items that have a lower price range, but are still really cute. I also tr y to focus on all sizes. Most boutiques don’t carr y 3XL, so that’s a big selling point for me.” Even though Travis only goes to the market about four times a year,

the items are randomly shipped, which means she gets new items almost ever y other day. “I just want to keep growing,” she said. “I would eventually like to grow where I could get more kids clothes, shoes and gift items.” One of her best sellers right now is friendship collars — a dog collar that comes with a matching bracelet for dog lovers. “I keep branching out with new things,” Travis said. “I want this space to become a gift shop and a boutique.” Travis also wants to thank all of her customers for the unwavering support over the last year and for the platinum vote of best new local business. “It’s been a great year,” she said.
