Mary Anne Steele was born and raised in Owensboro, a graduate of Owensboro Catholic High School and Centre College, where she studied history, religion, and archaeology. After working several years in cultural resource management, she took a leap of faith and moved to the Caribbean in 2005. Falling in love with the salt life through sailing and scuba diving, she opened a sailing and snorkeling charter business on St. John in the US Virgin Islands. Then came the 2017 storm season when 2 category 5 hurricanes blew her back home to Owensboro. She is very grateful to be back in her hometown, cultivating old friendships, while establishing new roots for her young family. Her calling to the real estate profession runs in the Steele blood and she excited to continue the tradition of honesty and excellence set forth by her father and uncle. How homeowners can prepare for summer storm season BY BRANDPOINT

MAKE ELECTRONIC COPIES OF ALL IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

It’s that time of year again when unwanted weather patterns like severe thunderstorms, rainstorms and tornadoes can wreak havoc on homes and businesses. Residents of Daviess County and the surrounding area are well aware — last week’s storm left behind felled trees, downed power lines, flooded streets and multiple instances of property damage. Given that severe weather can strike at any time, it’s important to be prepared for the storm season. These expert tips will help you prepare for and recover from a storm.

Take pictures of your home and its contents to use with insurance providers after damage has occurred.

HAVE A PLAN

TAKE STEPS TO KEEP YOUR HOME PROTECTED

Assign ever yone in your house a defined role. Let someone be responsible for gathering your pets; someone else, medication and important, irreplaceable documents. Identify areas of your home that are most secure so you can take cover. And while having a plan is a great first step, practicing it is even more important.

UPDATE YOUR CONTACT LIST

Make sure it includes critical phone numbers such as insurance providers, emergency response agencies and professional restoration companies that can immediately assist with damage. Also, be sure to have multiple ways to contact your friends and family to tell them where you are and what you need. Have back-up chargers available in the event you lose power.

If water enters your home, you can help limit water damage to your contents by lifting drapes off the carpet, looping them through a coat hanger and placing the hanger on the drapery rod. Outside your home, keep mulch away from the foundation to minimize the risk of water collecting near the building and possibly

leaking into the basement. After the storm has passed, wait for authorities to declare it’s safe to go home. When it is, keep these steps in mind.

KNOW HOW TO TURN OFF YOUR UTILITIES

In some cases, you need to be prepared to turn off water, gas and electric service if asked to evacuate or if flooding is imminent.

SAFETY FIRST

Floodwater may be electrically charged by downed power lines. If you see any fallen power lines, call your utility company immediately. Do not assume someone else has already contacted them. Once authorities give you the greenlight to reenter your neighborhood and home, make sure you have the proper gear to do so. Use waterproof boots and gloves to protect your skin from unpleasant or dangerous pollutants in the water.

CHECK THE STRUCTURE

If your home’s structure or foundation

appears unstable, do not attempt to go inside. Immediately call for professional help and get a thorough assessment of the damage. Water damage after heavy rains can cause walls, ceilings and floors to swell, decay or collapse.

TAKE INVENTORY AND CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE AGENT

Photograph and document all damages to your home and belongings to support any future insurance claims. As soon as possible after a storm, contact your insurance company or representative to check your coverage and start the claims process.

LIMIT DAMAGE

Rainwater and floodwater can damage your home’s contents and structure, and create ideal conditions for mold growth within a matter of hours. However, because floodwater is often contaminated, extra care should be used when entering the property and removing damaged items. Work with a qualified professional to prevent additional damage.

Try these secrets for a well-maintained lawn BY FAMILY FEATURES

Growing a healthy, appealing lawn isn’t about doing one thing right; it’s about doing a combination of things right. Different aspects of lawn maintenance, whether it’s watering, fertilizing or mowing, are interrelated. If you complete one task incorrectly — or skip it entirely — you may increase problems with insects, diseases and weeds. To help you on your way to manicuring a well-maintained lawn, BioAdvanced lawn and garden expert Lance Walheim recommends these steps:

GROW THE RIGHT GRASS

Different grasses grow in different areas of the country. Warm-season grasses, including bahiagrass, Bermuda grass, St. Augustine grass and zoysia, usually grow in warmer, more southerly regions. Cool-season grasses are typically grown in cooler, more northerly regions and include fescues, Kentucky bluegrass and ryegrass. Check with your local Cooperative Extension office to learn which types

deeper roots that can better withstand dry periods.

MOW PROPERLY

Start by cutting with a sharp mower blade that cuts grass cleanly, without tearing or shredding. Proper mowing height depends on grass type and time of year. Mow when the grass reaches one-third higher than the recommended mowing height. Set your mower at the upper end of recommended height range during the hottest time of the year to encourage deeper roots. Vary your mowing pattern to avoid creating ruts in the lawn. Avoid mowing when soil is wet or you can risk tearing up grass and soil. Leave grass clippings on the lawn to contribute organic matter to the soil and reduce fertilizer needs.

WATER CORRECTLY

Provide adequate moisture to grass, especially during episodes of drought or high temperatures. Provide deep (6-8 inches), infrequent irrigation, allowing the lawn to partially dry out between watering cycles. This promotes healthy,

Before you start a fertilizer program, conduct a soil test so you know you’re applying the correct blend of nutrients. In some parts of the country, soils may be acidic or alkaline and require additions of iron, magnesium or lime. Also, different types of grass need to be fertilized at different times of the year.

SCOUT FOR PROBLEMS

Like any landscape planting, lawns can suffer from a variety of problems. Weeds, bare spots, insects and diseases can weaken and even destroy a healthy lawn if left untreated. Keep an eye out for problems in your lawn with these tips: • Deal with weeds when you first see them because one weed can lead to more.
