ixty years ago, in the summer of 1959, the Daviess County Lions Club sponsored its first county fair at the old Colonial Riding Stables two miles east of Thruston on Kentucky 1389. Later, the fair moved to the Happy Go Lucky Ranch and then Ellis Speedway. In 1972, it moved into its current home in Philpot. Back then, county fairs were preceded by a big parade downtown, featuring all the Miss Daviess County Fair contestants. A lot has changed since then. And parades are no longer a part of the fair. But there’s plenty to do this year, Joan Hayden, spokeswoman for the fair, said recently. The action starts on Wednesday and runs through Saturday. There’s the ATV “The monster truck four-wheel mud bog, show was a huge a monster truck success last year,” show, the firefighter says fair spokeswoman challenge, the truck Joan Hayden. “It filled and tractor pull and Friday night the main arena,” which the fireworks. seats around 10,000. “We’ve added pony rides and a petting zoo this year,” Hayden said. First Bite Fishing Tanks of Youngstown, Ohio, which has been in business since 2007, will be there with a huge tank full of water and fish.

“They’ll be teaching kids to fish,” Hayden said. “And the kids get to keep the fish they catch.” The carnival rides are free — sponsored by Owensboro Health. “The monster truck show was a huge success last year,” Hayden said. “It filled the main arena.” The arena seats around 10,000. The Battle of the Bluegrass truck and tractor pull returns on July 12 and 13. There’s also a garden tractor pull. “We have a lot of new sponsors this year,” Hayden said. “We should do good if it doesn’t rain. Last year, we were very successful. But two years ago, it rained three out of four nights.” Years ago, the county fair was one of the few summer entertainment attractions in the county.

But that’s changed. “There’s a lot of competition now,” Hayden said. “Owensboro has a lot of diversity in entertainment. There is something to do every night.” But, she said, “We try to keep prices low.
