Competing for the crown BY MEGHANN RICHARDSON

W

hile many young girls dream of becoming a princess, some in Owensboro and Daviess County are working hard to make it come true. The annual Daviess County Lions Club Fair pageants kick off on July 13 with the Miss Pre-teen Pageant and ends with the Little Miss and Mister pageants on July 16. The Miss Daviess County Pageant is 7 p.m. Friday, July 14. Practice for the seven girls started in June, and included learning how to properly walk down the runway, how to wear appropriate makeup and all things relating to the pageant world. Bayli Boling, director of the Miss Daviess County pageant, said contestants discuss interview skills, partake in sisterhood bonding events and watch the previous year’s pageant video to get tips and pointers for their pageant.

Boiling said with only seven girls competiting this year, it is a building year for the Miss Daviess County pageant. “This year we introduced a public speaking portion to the competition and I think it honestly scared off some of the girls,” she said. “But we think its important. Throughout the year, Miss Daviess County will have to attend lots of event where she will need to be comfortable with public speaking. This is a great way to see the girls in a public speaking setting and for them to share more about the platform they’ve chosen.” Some of the duties of Miss Daviess County include attending every night of the fair, being an ambassador for the Daviess County Lions Club, riding in the Owensboro-Daviess County Christmas Parade and attending philanthropy events throughout the year. The newly crowned Miss Daviess County will go on to compete against

approximately 100 other women for Miss Kentucky County Fair. Boling, who is a former Miss Daviess County, has been with the Miss Daviess County pageant for nine years. “I think that says a lot of what this pageant can do for people,” she said. “I’ve seen a lot of winners and I’ve seen it changes girls lives. Girls who usually wouldn’t be out in the community, are meeting community leaders and business owners, while promoting something they are passionate about. We are molding these girls into powerful women.” Boling said her hope is for all the pageant winners to be strong, powerful women who leave a great legacy. Reigning Miss Daviess County Leah Sergeant, 19, has held the title for the last year and said it was been a wonderful experience. Sergeant, who attends Western Kentucky University, said being Miss Daviess County is more than just wearing a crown and a sash — it’s like

a job. Sergeant’s platform was breast cancer awareness and it was a subject close to her heart because her mom had it twice when she was younger. A few weeks ago, Sergeant also competed in the Miss Marion County Fair pageant and she has also been doing bigger pageants since having won Miss Daviess County. She gives up her Miss Daviess County title on July 14. “Annually, I compete in the Miss Teen KY USA pageant,” she said. “This year I’m old enough to compete in the Miss USA pageant.” She said competiting in Miss Daviess County gave her experience and confidence to compete in other pageants. “Something I have always heard is just be true to yoursel,” she said. “Always focus on you, don’t worry about the competition, just have fun, love what you wear and be passionate about your platform.”
