NEED NEW
WINDOWS? DO YOUR
RESEARCH BY STATEPOINT
As with any home upgrade, a little research can help ensure a top-quality installation with the best materials on the market. Here are the most important factors to consider before purchasing replacement windows:
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Energy-efficient windows can keep utility bills in-check while helping manage climate control. Seek out the ENERGY STAR label, which indicates a product is energy efficient according to standards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. Numbers don’t lie so be sure to also check the National Fenestration Rating Council Label to compare per formance between energyefficient windows in the following categories: U-Factor (how well the window retains heat), Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (how well it resists unwanted heat gain), Visible Transmittance (how well it lets in natural light), Air Infiltration (how drafty the window is), and Condensation Resistance (how well it resists inside surface condensation).
TEST SPECIFICATIONS
All windows on the market are tested for their structural integrity, as well as their resistance to air and water. Investigating these rat-
ings is important, particularly in regions that see wicked weather.
INSULATION
For maximum energy efficiency and comfort, look for new technologies such as Neopor insulation and INNERGY thermal reinforcements that deliver high-performance and meet ENERGY STAR certification standards. Windows offered by ProVia, for example, include these features and are tested against the most stringent requirements for air and water infiltration, wind load resistance, ease of operation, forced entry and more.
MATERIAL
Windows are available in such materials as vinyl, wood, aluminum and fiberglass. Understanding the benefits of each can help you arrive at the right decision for your home, priorities and budget, and new options even mix materials, combining different advantages into one product.
WARRANTY AVAILABILITY
Replacement Windows can cost thousands of dollars and should last a long time, so consider protecting your investment by opting for windows that come with a comprehensive lifetime warranty that’s transferrable
to the next homeowner. This can potentially increase your home’s value should you put it on the market.
STYLE
The style of your new windows can complement the architectural features of your home, provide visual interest and boost curb appeal. Using online design resources and visualizer tools can help you see how particular hardware finishes, colors, add-ons, finishing options and accessories will look on your home.
RECOGNITION
Third-par ty recognition for a par ticular brand or product is a strong indicator that you’re investing in a quality product. A recent “Remodeling” magazine sur vey of remodeling contractors ranked ProVia vinyl windows as number one in window quality, citing its unique ability to customize as needed, its personalized customer ser vice, strong warranties and mix of state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment and human craftsmanship. Lastly, the brand was recognized for strong attention to detail, as it follows an 80-plus item checklist for quality control. More information can be found at provia. com/windows.

5 steps to take to prepare your home for a natural disaster Help protect your residence, family by following these tips BY BRANDPOINT
To stay safe during a tornado, for example, have your family choose a windowless safe room in your home and designate a family member to open windows. For added protection get under something sturdy, such as a heavy table, or cover your body with a mattress.
Whether it’s hurricanes, tornadoes or snowstorms, natural disasters can occur anywhere at any time. When they do, it’s often sudden, so being prepared ahead of time is key. However, only 39% of Americans are prepared for an unexpected natural disaster, according to a study by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. “It’s important to always follow official evacuation orders. But if you are able to remain in the home, amplifying your safety now can help you and your family keep calm during an emergency,” said Tarsila Wey, director of marketing for First Alert. “Save yourself from potential stress by taking these steps to prepare for any natural disaster.”
CREATE AN EMERGENCY DISASTER KIT
Keep a well-stocked emergency disaster kit ready at all times. Fill your kit with first aid items such as bandages, gauze, tweezers and cleansing wipes. Additionally, include a flashlight, transistor radio, a portable phone charger, extra batteries, a fire extinguisher and enough bottled water and perishable food items to last at least 72 hours.
HELP PROTECT YOUR HOME AND FAMILY
PLAN FOR A NATURAL DISASTER
Emergency disaster drills are often conducted in schools, but rarely in the home. Plan for potential emergencies with your family before they strike.
Natural disasters can cause longlasting power outages and lead to a spike in carbon monoxide (CO) poi-
W NE ING T LIS
soning incidents, often because of improper generator use. It is extremely important to never leave your generator inside your home or the garage, as they are a source of CO. CO is an odorless and colorless gas, making it impossible to detect without an alarm. To protect your family from the threats of smoke, fire and CO, consider installing a First Alert Combination Smoke and CO Alarm with a 10-year sealed batter y, which eliminates the need to replace batteries for the life of the alarm. Test your alarms monthly and be sure all smoke and CO alarms have a battery backup if hardwired. Install alarms on each level of the home and near every sleeping area.
during a power outage. Never leave any open flames unattended. In the event of a fire, a well-planned and practiced escape plan will be invaluable. To design a fire escape plan, identify multiple exits out of each room and choose a meeting spot for your family away from the home. Practice this plan at least twice a year.
STORE YOUR VALUABLES SAFELY
KNOW FIRE SAFETY
Important documents such as insurance papers, bir th cer tificates and passports are necessar y when dealing with the aftermath of a disaster, so be sure they are safely stored. For maximum security, protect these documents as well as any family heirlooms or prized possessions by storing them in a waterproof and fire resistant safe. “Being prepared for extreme weather often isn’t on a homeowner’s mind until it’s too late,” said Wey. “Make safety a priority in your home by planning for any natural disaster so that your family and your property are as protected as possible.” For more information, visit www. firstalert.com.
Damaged powerlines, gas lines and other electrical systems pose a dangerous fire threat. If a powerline falls, don’t move or drive over it and immediately contact local authorities. Another potential danger is using candles

A SLICE OF HISTORY ON LITTLEWOOD DRIVE
STORY BY JODI KEEN MESSENGER-INQUIRER
PHOTOS BY ALAN WARREN MESSENGER-INQUIRER
A prime piece of Owensboro real estate is available in the city’s most beloved neighborhood, and it has the whole package — including a claim to fame. Joy Horton and her late husband, Bill, bought 1921 Littlewood Drive in 1987 after being charmed by the 1938 home’s craftsmanship and location. “My husband loved it,” she says. “He loved older houses, (and this one) was fairly original.” Some of those original pieces are still in use, such as the hardwood on the stairs and the second floor. Also original is the red tile roof, which has been carefully refurbished and maintained over the years. “Another reason we liked the house was it had big rooms,” Joy says, pointing out the oversized master suite’s 10-foot ceiling, walk-in closet and expansive, add-on master bath — all a rarity in a pre-war house.
At 3,591 square feet, one would hardly argue this property has plenty of room. Formal dining and living rooms, an updated kitchen, a half bath and an enclosed sun room fill out the first floor and link together in a free-flowing floor plan, while three bedrooms and two full baths round out the second level. The property includes an unfinished basement, twocar attached garage and courtyard full of entertaining potential behind the house. 1921 Littlewood Drive also benefits from its central location. Owensboro High School football games are within walking distance, and the popular annual PorchFest music festival is just a block to the north. The Dogwood Azalea Trail is a favorite area for local walkers and runners, and 1921 Littlewood Drive proudly adds to its neighborhood’s appeal. Wisteria crawls along a back yard trellis, while the front and side yard gardens include vibrant flowers, oriental azaleas and several varieties of hostas that are as diverse and friendly as the neighbors. “I love the neighbors,” Joy says. “It’s a great neighborhood.” 1921 Littlewood Drive has also cement-
‘THAT GANGSTER’S HOUSE’ For more information on “Bugs” Moran’s time in Owensboro, check out the May 17, 1991, edition of the Messenger-Inquirer in our digital archive at Newspapers.com. Keith Lawrence’s detailed timeline includes an account of an oral history project by Grady Harreld Jr.’s grandson, a then12-year-old Glenn Peyton Taylor Jr., that brought Harreld’s role in the story to light.
ed a place in Owensboro’s history as the brief residence of famed Chicago gangster George “Bugs” Moran. But unlike those unreliable Johnny Depp sightings, this story has a proven record. In fall 1945, H.C. Farmer was temporarily relocating to Florida and wanted to sublet his home at 1921 Littlewood Drive. He rented it to an oil businessman, who lived at the residence until Farmer returned from Florida in March 1946. Unbeknownst to most at the time, the oil businessman was Moran, a bitter rival of Al Capone who had lost several
members of his mob to the gunfire of Capone’s gang during the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Unbeknownst to Moran, the FBI was investigating a burglary ring and set up surveillance at 2001 Littlewood Drive, directly next door. That home at the time was owned by Grady Harreld Jr., and federal agents used it to stake out Moran’s residence for four months. Once Moran moved on to Henderson in the spring and a stronger case against him had been built, the FBI, assisted by the Owensboro Police Department, raided Moran’s Henderson residence and arrested him and an accomplice. And, according to Harreld, that made the home at 1921 Littlewood an instant legend. 70 years later, Joy says she still gets the occasional inquiry about “that gangster’s house” on Littlewood Drive. It makes her smile, as do the years of cherished memories and friendships that have been established at 1921 Littlewood Drive. Selling it is “kind of bittersweet,” Joy says. “There are a lot of memories.” Judy Lambert, RE/MAX

Work from home? Here’s how to create the perfect office BY STATEPOINT
creaking ceiling fan or a light that just doesn’t do the trick. A simple switch can make all the difference. While a desk lamp might solve your lighting problem, why not opt for a fixture that can solve both of those issues at the same time? Tech-savvy ceiling fan options from Hunter Fan Company like the Tunable White LED Dempsey, allow you to adjust the temperature of the light, ensuring your fan will operate quietly, keep you cool, and work as hard -- and as late -- as you do. With its dimmable remote, you can adjust the light temperature for your eyes, using warm white lighting for nighttime work and cool white lighting to perk you up in the morning. Such details will help any entrepreneur avoid distraction and create a more productive work environment.
With more people nationwide opting to create their own businesses or work for their employer remotely, the home office has become one of the most used spaces of the house, with many people spending more than eight hours a day in this room. If you’re one of these people, the kitchen table just won’t cut it if you’re looking to get serious and organized. To create a dedicated workspace that is beautiful, smart and functional, consider the following tips:
DESIGN A SPACE WHERE YOU’LL ENJOY SPENDING TIME
Simple touches like lighting, a bright touch of paint or a wide-open window, can help create an inviting ambiance, and so can the addition of certain accessories. Instead of opting for a simple ceiling light fixture, dare to add a pop of style and color with a new ceiling fan. Not only can this addition make your space more comfortable, it can elevate your décor, with the ceiling as the centerpiece. Options from Hunter Fan Company like the Norden or Hepburn can bring the Satin Copper trend from the kitchen to the office, while new finishes in some of the brand’s fan favorites, such as the Cranbrook in Dove Grey or Blush Pink, will fit seamlessly into a
bright and inviting space.
ADD LIFE
Add color and vitality to your home office with some plant life. Not only will you be improving indoor air quality, you’ll be adding beauty to the space. To save precious desk-space, consider a few hanging planters, opting for plants that thrive indoors, such as spider plants or jade.
DON’T FORGET FUNCTION
As the wheels turn and your creative juices start flowing, nothing can be more distracting than a
GET PERSONAL
You may be doing business, but when it comes to decorating, it’s time to mix in the personal. Items such as photographs of friends and family or reminders of previous accomplishments will bring you joy and help you stay motivated. Whatever you do, don’t settle for completely bare walls! Gone are the days of dark wood-paneling, moody lighting and rolodexes. Today’s most effective home offices are brighter, more welcoming, and unite function with your personal style.

Get your home organized BY FAMILY FEATURES
EMBRACE ROUTINES
The idea of dedicating large chunks of time to organizing and tidying the house can be over whelming. However, making time to clean as you progress through the day can help control clutter and keep the time commitment more manageable. Commit to cleaning up the kitchen after dinner each night. Set expectations for kids to pick up their rooms before bed. Before long, routines become productive habits that make a visible difference.
PURGE THE EXCESS
Over time, nearly everyone collects too much stuff, and clutter is often more an indication of too much volume than poor organization. Items are purchased to replace outdated things, but the old pieces sometimes
don’t actually get discarded. Getting control of your clutter starts with eliminating the things you no longer want or need. A good strategy is to create piles of items: keep, sell, donate and discard.
CREATE A DROP ZONE
In most homes, the entryway is a catchall for family belongings that get shed with each pass through the door. It’s convenient to have shoes, coats, backpacks and other essentials ready to grab as you head out, so instead of fighting the inevitable jumble, find a way to organize it. A stylish drop zone using ClosetMaid’s Space Creations organizers is a solution that attractively contains all those essentials. The line includes a range shelving kits, complementing drawers, baskets, rods and more so you can customize the storage unit to your exact space and needs.
AVOID JUNK PILES
Nearly every home has at least one junk pile, drawer or even room. In most cases, the reason is that the contents are a mish-mash of items that don’t really have any place else to go. Make a point to identify ways to create order, whether it’s adding drawer inserts to contain all the odds and ends or buying a standing file to capture bills and mail.
BE MINDFUL ABOUT USE
When you’re on a mission to eliminate excess clutter, it can be tempting to go overboard putting things away. It’s important to be realistic about where you store the things you need and err on the side of keeping the things you use regularly within reach. This may mean getting creative about how you organize or even adding new storage containers or furniture, but remember being organized is only helpful if it’s also practical.

ELEVATE YOUR HOME THROUGH MINIMALISM SIMPLIFY YOUR DESIGN STRATEGY
When revamping your room to create a more minimalist effect, choose a limited color palette, meaning one to three colors at most. Select mostly more muted or neutral colors, though you can use one vivid color in a piece of furniture or art to grab the spotlight. Let the textures of the materials that you use for the floors, walls, ceilings and furnishings - whether they are natural wood, stone, ceramics, glass, tile, fabrics or canvas - create the room’s visual interest instead of yesterday’s too-busy colors and patterns. Choose a couple of contrasting textures, like glass and reclaimed lumber, or woven fabric and stone, to highlight in the room for the best effect.
DECLUTTER YOUR SPACES
Decide what items you really want and need to be in each room and get rid of the rest - or find a way to store it neatly, preferably out of sight. One of the greatest visual clutter culprits today comes from technology. It’s hard to know what to do with the mass and tangle of cords from all the latest gadgets, power strips and chargers everyone uses in their homes.
To streamline the technology you use for viewing TV, movies and more, a product from LG Electronics USA can solve your cord clutter problem and turn your living room into an amazing home viewing theater. The LG CineBeam AI ThinQ 4K Laser Projector (HU85LA) creates an impressive 90- to 120-inch cinematic screen by placing it just 2.2 to 7.2 inches away from the wall, needing no complicated installation. With its streamlined and compact design, the state-ofthe-art projector incorporates LG’s ThinQ AI and has the Google Assistant built-in so you can control your compatible smart home devices with just your voice.
CHOOSE FURNISHINGS WITH CLEAN LINES
When you’re selecting new furniture for your minimalist rooms, look for high-quality, standout pieces designed with clean lines, with no fussy design details or busy patterns. Don’t acquire more furniture than the room really needs. Chances are you can do without all those end tables and extra chairs. Make one exceptional, stylish piece of furniture be the focal point for each room, and don’t overfurnish or over-decorate the space around it. Then avoid the urge to smother the couch or sectional with tons of blankets and throw pillows. Let the fur-
niture speak for itself.
STREAMLINE ARTISTIC EXPRESSION
Instead of filling every wall with pictures, choose just one accent wall, eliminating excessive decor elements around it. Let one work of art dominate that space, reducing any competition for attention. The LG CineBeam Laser Projector can display a chosen photograph or work of art on your accent wall. With 8.3 million pixels, it delivers impeccable precision and detail at four times the resolution of full HD, along with incredibly vibrant color reproduction. It works without the need to darken the room around it, using gentle light that produces clear images without any harsh brightness.
LEAVE PLENTY OF OPEN SPACE
Resist the urge to fill every corner and surface of the room with ornaments and knickknacks. It’s the open space, unencumbered by any visual clutter, that creates the feeling of calm and tranquility you’re craving. And if you’re lucky enough to have a great view out the window, install only simple, streamlined window treatments — or no window treatments at all — to highlight that view.
