Seeking an easy, stylish decorating upgrade? A wall-mount door makes more room for fun
F
BY FAMILY FEATURES
all is the perfect time to make space-saving upgrades to your house. For example, consider swapping out a traditional swinging door for a smooth-gliding, wall-mounted sliding door. A sliding door can add up to 14 square feet of floor space, which allows for more room to spread out toys
and games, and give a more spacious feel to nearly any room. They also allow for more flexibility in furniture arrangements, which can turn even the smallest nook in your house into a cozy space. It’s easy to do with an option like Johnson Hardware’s Soft-Close Wall-Mount Sliding Door Hardware, which can be used with virtually any metal or wood door from 1-inch to 1
3/4-inches thick, up to 48 inches wide and weighing up to 200 pounds. The U.S.-made hardware gently slows the door’s travel speed to softly pull it into the fully open or fully closed position and works like a cabinet door closer, enabling doors to open and close quietly and securely. It also prevents door slamming and pinched fingers, as well as reducing door operational noise. The built-in satin or bronze finish fascia can give a warm decorative detail to a room while the smooth-rolling door hardware and track exceed ANSI
standards, meaning it can successfully complete 100,000 opening and closing cycles, with adjustable door guides, tricycle hangers and adjustable track stops. The jump-proof aluminum box track is available in lengths up to 96 inches for single doors and up to 192 inches for double doors. Installing wall-mount sliding door hardware in a playroom, or nearly any other room in your house, can be an easy yet high-impact improvement that reduces space constraints while adding warmth, functionality and visual appeal.

Comfortable elegance STORY BY JODI KEEN MESSENGER-INQUIRER
PHOTOS BY AP IMAGERY
The white brick home at 2041 Fieldcrest Drive is a familiar site to most people; its grandeur and French chateaustyle architecture are a curious thing to encounter in western Kentucky. Many people passing by may have even had the opportunity to venture inside. That’s because friendship and philanthropy, much like sophistication, are a part of its bones. The 3,177-square-foot structure was designed and built in 1966 by one strong woman, architect Lola Ensminger, and became a beloved gem through another, Claire Neal. Claire was a community fundraiser who often threw open the double front doors of her home and welcomed everyone inside for a good time and a good cause. Junior League of Owensboro, Habitat for Humanity, Owensboro Symphony Orchestra — many groups have benefitted from Claire’s philanthropic gatherings staged on Fieldcrest Drive.
“Mom tried to open her home once a year,” Claire’s daughter August says. “She had a strong inclination to help the community.” For many years, Claire lived further down the street from 2041 Fieldcrest and had long admired its elegance — “It was always really my mom’s dream house,” August says. When the property came up for sale in the late 1980s, Claire wasted no time snapping it up. “She liked that it was French-influenced architecture,” August says. “It had a comfortable elegance to it.” For Claire, the property checked off all the boxes on her wish list. “It was a unique home: It’s a perfect home for entertaining, but also as a retreat,” August says. She points out the expansive living room, formal dining room and wood-beamed family room — all excellent places for hosting a party — and contrasts them with the walled-in private garden and covered patio overlooking the landscaping on the peaceful corner lot. Two bedrooms — with space for a
third — and 3.5 baths can comfortably accommodate residents and guests alike. The eat-in kitchen includes bar seating, a wet bar with its own sink, hidden accessory compartments, solid wood cabinetry and a walk-in butler’s pantry. Claire was in her 50s at the time of purchase, and the house’s one-floor living appealed to her. Although it allowed plenty of space for hosting friends and events, August says, it also made her mother “comfortable easing into older age.” Upon moving in, Claire set to making 2041 Fieldcrest her own while respecting the original architecture and the home’s natural grace. She kept its custom crystal chandeliers, plaster cast moldings and mansard roof. “Mom really loved the house as it was,” August says, “and her goal was to maintain it impeccably.” A longtime fundraiser, Claire’s new home helped her continue her work in local philanthropy. 2041 Fieldcrest was the scene of arguably Claire’s most famous fundraiser. Reeling from the devastation she saw from the December 2004 Asian
tsunami, Claire organized a New Year’s Eve event benefitting Habitat for Humanity’s tsunami relief fund. Promising “delicious chocolates and so-so coffee” (Claire was not a coffee drinker or maker), Claire invited the entire town to 2041 Fieldcrest. The benefit raised thousands of dollars, and the resulting media coverage put Owensboro in the national spotlight. “Mom, like many people in the community, was very interested and enthusiastic about helping local causes,” August says. “In that time, in Owensboro, people really had (philanthropy) built into their way of living. It was part of the whole Owensboro ethic.” Claire passed away last year, but her energy is still evident in 2041 Fieldcrest, and thanks to her diligence in carefully preserving the property, the two previous owners’ presence can be felt there, too. It’s a home of charm, grace and style, but also warmth, kindness and friendship. With bones like that, 2041 Fieldcrest is the perfect place to call home. Angela Clark, Tony Clark Realtors

EASY WAYS TO
IMPROVE your
HOME’S HEALTH Fresh air, clean floors, pure water — it’s all possible with these healthy living tips
BY FAMILY FEATURES
bulb with the swipe of a finger, you can also easily control your mood. Warm lighting typically has an overall positive effect on everyone in the home. One of the keys to home wellness is ensuring you are truly happy in your home, and lighting can play a pivotal role in cultivating this emotion.
Maintaining a healthy home is a goal most Americans share, but not all are confident they’re doing the best job they can to protect their home’s health. According to a sur vey conducted by Second Nature, the nation’s largest home wellness subscription service, 62% of respondents admitted they could do a better job of attaining a healthy home, with clean air ranked as the most critical factor in achieving home wellness. Gain more confidence in the health and cleanliness of your home with these tips:
REMOVE YOUR SHOES WHEN YOU ENTER THE HOUSE
Add entryway seating to encourage guests to take off their shoes. The bottom of a pair of shoes can contain anything from fecal matter to E. coli and pesticides. Leaving shoes at an entryway is one of the easiest ways to combat home pollution and promote a healthy home.
REPLACE AIR FILTERS REGULARLY
The air filter in your home dictates the air you breathe and ensures that it is healthy enough for ingestion. More often than not, air filters are not top of mind when thinking about home wellness, but they are crucial to every home. That’s why it’s important to replace air filters on schedule - every three months as recommended by the National Institutes of Health.
OPEN WINDOWS ON GOOD WEATHER DAYS
If you’re like many homeowners who struggle to remember when it’s time to change your filter, or never have a filter handy when you do remember, you may benefit from a service like Second Nature, which provides a home deliver y subscription that ensures your air filters are replaced on time. The company’s high-quality air filters help reduce the risk of contracting allergies, sickness and infection while also ultimately lowering costs associated with energy bills, repairs and health-related expenses.
CHANGE OUT YOUR LIGHT BULBS
Choose the right color temperature for a calmer home and use energy-efficient bulbs. The selection for light bulbs is massive, and with smart home technologies that allow you to change the color of your
Most Americans (61%) believe the air inside their homes is cleaner than it is outside, according to the sur vey. However, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates indoor air is 2-5 times more polluted than the air outside. This is in part because Americans tend to enclose themselves indoors, where the same air is recycled over an extended time. The smell of the meal you cooked for dinner, the trash in the garbage can and the candle you light on your nightstand all have an impact on the air quality in your home. Opening windows allows for polluted air to release itself from the home and, in turn, allows for cleaner air to circulate the space.
FILTER YOUR WATER
Water is essential to any healthy lifestyle, and drinking clean water is a luxury that is often overlooked. However, what is also overlooked is how many chemicals and toxins that can af fect your health are in the tap water you drink on a daily basis. Filtering your water is one simple step that can benefit not only your own health, but the health of everyone in the home.

4 HOME FIX-UPS FOR FALL Get your house in order for autumn with these prevention projects BY BRANDPOINT
W
ith cooler days and temperate weather, fall is a good time to get outdoors and tackle some larger home projects, as well as prep your home for winter. “Cold weather can wreak havoc on your house, leaving you with a long list of repairs,” said Cathy McHugh, director, brand management at DAP. “It’s important to take preventative action now so you can enjoy the coming weather change, rather than making costly repairs later.” Don’t know where to start? Here are the top five “must-do” repairs from the experts at DAP.
REFRESH AROUND WINDOWS AND DOORS
Temperature fluctuations and weather extremes can cause cracks and crumbling in sealants around windows and doors. The resulting gaps allow air to creep inside, putting your energy bills on overdrive. In addition, if current sealant has any dirt build-up, the hot and humid weather of summer can foster mold and mildew. Protect your home and give your windows and doors a refresh and waterproof seal that stands up to the elements by applying a new exterior sealant like Dynaflex Ultra Advanced Exterior Sealant that will provide long-lasting all-weather, waterproof protection, resisting dirt build-up and water absorption. It also comes with a lifetime mold-, mildewand algae-resistant guarantee. It’s easy to apply and is paint-ready in just an hour, allowing you to quickly repair problem areas.
REPAIR IMPERFECTIONS AND SURFACE DAMAGE
It’s important to take a walk around your property and inspect
your home and outdoor living areas for surface damage issues caused by hail, wind and heavy rain. Common damage includes cracks in sidewalks and driveways, as well as chips in siding. Address problem areas like these with an exterior filler, which can fill in exposed, vulnerable areas and prevent further damage. To save time and money, choose a multipurpose filler designed specifically for exterior repairs like Platinum Patch Advanced Exterior Filler, formulated with innovative Weather MaxTechnology for long-lasting, all weather protection. The mold-, mildew- and algae-resistant formula
creates a durable bond that prevents discoloration, as well as cracking and crumbling over time. It is sandable and paintable and offers superior adhesion to porous and non-porous building materials such as brick, concrete, metal, composite or wood decks, vinyl or fiber cement siding, PVC trim board and more.
INSPECT YOUR ROOF
Start by making a simple visual inspection of your roof. Before hauling out the ladder, use binoculars or zoom in with a smartphone camera to spot obvious damage. If your roof has a relatively flat surface and you feel comfortable
on a ladder, then go up for a closer look. Shingles that are cracked, buckled, loose or are missing granules need to be replaced. And of course, while you’re up there, be sure to clear any clogged gutters to prevent potential water damage.
PREPARE YOUR FURNACE FOR FALL
Now is the time to prepare your furnace for fall. Change the filter, clean vents and remove any dirt or dust that has settled on the unit and connections. If you suspect problems, schedule a professional to check it out now - rather than wait until temperatures drop.

Plan the Ultimate Kitchen Upgrade BY FAMILY FEATURES
MAKE PURPOSEFUL CHANGES
A desire to bring your kitchen’s style up to date is plenty of motivation for a renovation, but to get maximum benefit from your new space, spend time considering what functional improvements you can make, too. Do you need more cabinets for storage? Is there enough counter space for meal prep? Does the overall layout suit your family’s needs? Even if you chose the original layout and floorplan, chances are good that over time you’ve found a few things you’d change given the chance to do it again.
CONSIDER PHYSICAL SPACE
If yours is a family that cooks together, or if guests tend to congregate in the kitchen when you’re entertaining, a renovation is the perfect time to make adjustments that accommodate more bodies in the kitchen. You might want more work zones for multiple cooks or an island or peninsula set away from the
high-traffic zone for guests more interested in snacking and chatting than getting hands-on.
EVALUATE YOUR SHOPPING STYLE
You may be in the habit of doing your grocery shopping to fit your available space. However, with a larger refrigerator and more pantry space, your shopping habits could change, allowing you to become a bulk shopper or at least increase the time between shopping trips.
BE REALISTIC ABOUT MEALTIME
If your family’s activities have everyone eating at different times, you may benefit from a feature like a warming drawer that keeps dinner warm until each family member makes it home for a meal. Think about features that would make the table space more practical, such as task lighting so kids can tackle homework at the table or convenient access
to power for laptops.
CHOOSE APPLIANCES WITH CARE
It’s easy to get carried away with all of the design elements that go into a kitchen renovation, but at the end of the day, remember the appliances are the true centerpiece of the space. Be sure to leave room in the budget to select the best appliances for your needs so you have all the functions, features and space to make using your new kitchen as enjoyable as possible.
THINK INTO THE FUTURE
A kitchen renovation can be a costly venture, so it’s a good idea to project years down the road as you consider your needs. Are there features that would enhance the safety if a baby (that soon will become an inquisitive toddler) joins the family? Are there elderly family members may benefit from a lower or higher work station down the road?
