How much can mulched leaves help your lawn? Various chores are synonymous with certain times of year. For example, cleaning a pool is a summertime task. In addition, rare is the instance that Mother Nature forces anyone to break out the snow shovels outside of winter. Raking leaves has long been a task for fall afternoons, but homeowners may be surprised to learn that they might be better off putting their rakes in permanent mothballs. In the 1990s, turfgrass specialists at Michigan State University began exploring the potential benefits of leaving mulched leaves on a lawn instead of raking them and leaving them for curbside pickup. While the researchers noticed an obvious leaf residue on the lawn after mulching, they noted that it only sticks around for a few days. Eventually, the tiny pieces sifted down into the lawn, ultimately serving to control future weed growth while also providing the lawn with essential nutrients. Over time, researchers noted that homeowners who mulched rather than raked their leaves needed less fertilizer to give their lawns a green look in spring, saving homeowners the effort and cost associated with fertilizing. Researchers also noted that decomposing pieces of leaves cover up bare spots between turf plants, which have traditionally proven to be excellent spots for weed seeds to germinate. In fact, MSU notes that homeowners can expect a nearly 100 percent decrease in dandelions and crabgrass after mulching leaves for just three years. Depending on the type of mower being used, up to six inches of leaves can be mulched at a time. Push mowers can handle smaller amounts, though can still be as effective as riding mowers.

THE PERFECT SETTING STORY BY JODI KEEN MESSENGER-INQUIRER

PHOTOS BY GREG EANS MESSENGER-INQUIRER

In the mid-1990s, Steve and Janie Drury were looking to build a home in Lewisport, and they caught sight of the perfect spot on west Pell Street. The resulting property at 1565 Pell St. is a comfortable, 3,248-square-foot brick ranch that was designed and constructed mainly by the Drurys themselves. Building a home was not uncommon for the Drurys: At that point in time, they had already built three family homes for themselves. “We’d build something, and someone would come along and want to buy it,” Steve says — not that they minded. “We all the time have projects going,” Janie says.

As a retired brick mason who enjoys carpentry work, Steve collaborated with Janie on the home’s design plans, and while professional contractors framed the house, Steve and Janie did much of the remaining work themselves. “It’s something we both enjoy doing,” Steve says. “This type of work is right down my alley. I did the concrete work, the block work, the brick work. … We put the insulation in, did all the painting, the staining of the cabinets. It takes about eight and a half months the way we do it, because we do so much ourselves.” When the dust settled from construction, the Drurys’ home had four bedrooms, three full baths, a full and finished basement, formal dining room and a family room on each level. The basement also boasts plenty of space for storage, entertaining and crafts. Gorgeous custom built-ins fill an entire

wall of the upstairs living room, while the others feature tasteful decorative paneling and a fireplace. The kitchen offers cabinet space, a prep sink in the island and plenty of room to maneuver — designed just so by Janie. Connecting and complementing the two rooms is a pair of arresting tray ceilings. “The kitchen is my favorite,” Janie says. “It’s full of windows, and the sunshine floods my kitchen. That’s what I love about it.” Another distinctive feature of this already impressive property is the 30-footby-26-foot shop building. “The shop gets water, TV, telephone, the works,” Steve says. “There’s a wood furnace. It’s a good place to loaf around.” Extending from the shop building is a 12-foot-by-26-foot brick-enclosed patio — more evidence of the Drurys’ handiwork. The patio has hosted everything from

family reunions and birthday parties to a bridal shower. The location of their property and the town itself, the Drurys agree, is ideal. “We definitely like that lot,” Steve says. “It’s a big lot, and you’ve got some privacy to the north side across the highway — there’s not much over there — and to the west, there’s just a field. I’m the last house inside the city limits.” “Living in a small town,” Janie adds, “we learned this (area) had a lot of things — you know your banker, you know the people at your grocery store. ... It’s a lot more personable. In all, 1565 Pell St. is a tranquil spot and the perfect locale for a family that wants plenty of elbow room, inside and out. April Madden and Jenny Weakley, Century 21 Partners

Prep your fireplace for roasting and toasting weather A warm fire can make even the coldest winter day more enjoyable. Fireplaces may not get much use in spring or summer, but come late fall and throughout the winter, the fireplace can be a great place for families to gather. Before fireplace season hits full swing, homeowners might want to brush up on a few fireplace facts so they can safely enjoy nights spent sitting by the crackling flames. The Chimney Safety Institute of America advises homeowners with fireplaces to hire a CSIA-certified chimney sweep to clean their fireplaces. After a lengthly period of non-use, various issues could be affecting the chimney, many of which might not be noticeable to an untrained eye. Professional, certified chimney sweeps have extensive knowledge of fireplaces, making them valuable resources who can let homeowners know if any safety issues developed since fireplaces were last used. The National Protection Agency recommends that

chimneys be swept at least once per year. A full inspection of the chimney might be in order as well. Chimney service technicians will conduct thorough examinations of readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior and accessible portions of the appliance and the chimney connection. The CSIA recommends that homeowners who plan to use their chimneys as they have in the past request a Level 1 inspection, which will examine the soundness of the chimney structure and flue as well as the basic appliance installation and connections. Technicians also will verify if the chimney is free of obstruction and combustible deposits. Homeowners also should inspect their chimney dampers before lighting their first fires of the season. Dampers should open and close smoothly. If not, a service technician can help fix or replace the damper. Firewood is another thing homeowners must

consider before lighting their first fires of the season. The CSIA says that well-seasoned firewood works best, noting that wood that is not well-seasoned will produce more smoke than heat. In addition, the home improvement resource This Old House recommends using dense wood that’s been split and stored in a high and dry place for at least six months. Oak is an example of dense wood that, when stored properly, can make for an enjoyable fireplace experience. Avoid softwoods like pine. Pine can produce a lot of creosote, which is a byproduct of wood combustion. Creosote is highly flammable, and as it builds up in a chimney, the risk for a chimney fire increases. Choosing the right wood, making sure it’s well-seasoned and having a chimney professionally cleaned can reduce the risk of a creosote-related chimney fire. A Level 1 inspection should determine if there are potentially dangerous levels of creosote deposits in the chimney.

WEATHERIZATION 101 TIPS FOR A COMFORTABLE HOME

D Should you create a pet door? Pets quickly take up residence in their owners’ homes and hearts. Many pet parents treat their pets as full-fledged members of the family, with the same privileges and attention they devote to other family members. A 2016 Harris Poll found 95 percent of Americans consider their pets to be part of the family, and there is not much they won’t do for their companion animals. One area where pet owners may focus their attention is giving their pets more freedom to explore the outdoors. This can be achieved with the installation of a pet door. With busy schedules taking many pet parents away from home, pets may spend many hours home alone. An outdoor retreat could be just what the veterinarian ordered for pets who need more fresh air. Before pet owners install doors for their four-legged friends, it may behoove them to consider the advantages and disadvantages to doing so.

PROS

Pet doors can be very convenient for pet owners and pets. Unencumbered bathroom breaks is one of the prime reasons to get a pet door. Not having to wake up early in the morning or rush home from work to let out a pup can give pet owners more freedom. Cat owners may choose to have their cats soil outdoors, removing the hassle and odor of indoor litter boxes. A pet door provides a way for pets to regulate when they need to go and not be at the mercy of their human companions. This is handy when training a puppy who cannot hold his bladder for more than a few hours. Avoiding indoor accidents can be a great reason to install a pet door. Pets need exercise and stimulation to alleviate boredom and avoid destructive behaviors. Access to the outdoors promotes physical activity and mental stimulation. Cats may chase bugs or small animals. Dogs may run around the yard and play with a ball or stick. Easy access to outdoor play can take some of the burden off of busy pet owners.

CONS

As convenient as pet doors can be, they may disconnect pet owners from their pets. People may feel they don’t need to spend the time in the yard or walking the animal, and that can adversely affect the bonds between pet owner and pet. Another potential disadvantage concerns alpha-driven pets. Giving pets control over their comings and goings may reinforce ego and potentially cause the animal to be less responsive to his owner’s commands. Safety is another concern. Although there are smart doors that can only open when triggered by a chip on the pet’s collar, one never knows what pets may bring indoors. Cats may present dead rodents and dogs may dirty the house with muddy paws. Weather is another concern. In colder climates, pet doors may be another source of drafts, contributing to inefficient heating and cooling situations. Dogs or cats who are prone to roaming could get into trouble if left to their own devices outside.

BY STATEPOINT

o seasonal temperatures sometimes leave you frustrated with your home’s lack of insulation? Staying comfortable indoors is a top priority for most people, and luckily, it’s easy to ensure your home is an optimal temperature. With a few quick tips and home defense strategies, you’ll be on your way to a more comfortable abode in just a few hours. WHY WEATHERIZE? Preparing your home to combat temperature change is an important task for both homeowners and renters throughout the year. Feel uncomfortable drafts? Notice your heating and cooling equipment is continuously running? Tired of expensive energy bills? You’re not alone: almost two-thirds of American adults live in a home that needs to be weatherized, according to recent research conducted by Duck brand. There are many motivations for weatherizing. In fact, did you know: • 54 percent of people weatherize to save money on energy bills • 44 percent weatherize to make the temperature of their home more comfortable • 22 percent do it for greater energy efficiency IS THAT A DRAFT? First, you’ll need to identify the source -- or sources -- of leaks. Don’t stress -- it’s easy! Hold an incense stick near potential draft sources, such as windows and doors. If the smoke blows sideways, you’ll know an air leak exists and it’s time to weatherize. But don’t stop there. Areas such as attic access openings, pull-down stairs and exterior electrical sockets are additional, often overlooked sources of air leaks. SO, NOW WHAT? Once you’ve identified the leaks, it’s time to stop them. Window and door seals take a beating from normal wear-and-tear and can be a large source of drafts coming into the home. Replace old, cracked seals with weatherstrip seals, which are made with durable, flexible material, allowing them to stand up against extreme temperatures that cause other seals to freeze or crack. They help to block cold winter air from entering, as well as dust, pollen and insects during the warmer months. For added protection with older windows, an easy-to-install, insulation kits can create an additional barrier against cold air. The pre-taped top and easy roll-on film requires no measuring, making installation painless. When applied to indoor window frames, the film provides an airtight seal that’s easily removed once warmer weather arrives. Finally, address the hidden leaks with solutions like insulating seals. Quick and easy to install, they fit behind outlets or light switch faceplate covers. When installed on exterior walls, they act as a buffer between the inside and outside air. Next, attic stairway covers protect against an often-uninsulated area, and offer a flexible, lightweight solution that can be repositioned to maintain direct access to the attic.
