Fall: The best season for home improvement By BPT
The rituals of fall include sending kids back to school, raking leaves and cheering on the hometown football team. In addition, a new fall tradition has emerged for America’s nearly 74 million homeowners - home improvement. This fall promises to be particularly popular for home projects. Lower gas prices are boosting people’s discretionar y income and Metrostudy’s latest Residential Remodeling Index points to a continued rise in activity. Like many trends, there isn’t one particular reason fall has emerged as a popular time for home improvement,
several factors play a role.
Energy efficiency is top of mind
With colder weather on the horizon, homeowners shudder at the thought of higher heating costs. They upgrade windows, layer in more insulation, service or replace old furnaces and, in some cases, do all of the above.
The weather is nice
Home improvement projects can be hard and even gr ueling work, par ticularly for DIYers. Lower temperatures and humidity create a much more comfor table environment for getting things done (and rhetorically keeping your cool when
obstacles inevitably arrive).
The holiday entertaining wow factor

How to repurpose items for new and useful purposes By Metro Creative Connection
The “reduce, reuse and recycle” movement has grown increasingly popular as more men, women and children look to adopt eco-friendly lifestyles. By considerably cutting back on waste, people are doing their part to reduce the size of landfills, safeguard natural habitats and keep neighborhoods and local communities clean. Municipal public works organizations may have recycling programs in place that make it convenient for residents to recycle items by placing them at the curb for pickup. But prior to putting items out for recycling, people can investigate if it’s possible to reuse an item in a new way. The following are some creative ways to repurpose items around the house. • Transform shirts into shopping totes. With some modest sewing skills, you can turn an old shirt into a reusable shopping tote. Seal the bot-

When Kent and Jill Robinson were relocated to Owensboro, they decided to build a home that mirrored one they loved in Nashville. The result was a home that is strikingly unique inside and out. “Nothing is traditional,” Jill Robinson said of the home, which she characterizes as rustic contemporary with industrial accents. Located in the still relatively new neighborhood of Bridgewood, which features woods and a creek, the Robinson house looks and feels almost like a posh mountain or lakeside retreat. Throughout the home, exposed wooden beams and hand hewn hickory plank floors, paired with a palette of gray tones, create a sedate effect. “We upgraded everything we could” Jill Robinson said.

The Robinson’s built their house with entertaining in mind, and enjoyed hosting friends in the home’s comfortable spaces. “The dining room is not a traditional room,” Robinson said. “It’s a open space that is more of a combined library and dining room.” There’s also room for entertaining and dining on the huge screened in porch, which double doors open onto so it “becomes part of the house,” she says. With a gas fireplace, mounted television, and views of the woods, the porch is enjoyable practically year round.
The home has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Two upstairs bedrooms share a bath and create a suite atmosphere for children or guests. An additional guest bed and bath are located on the first floor, as is the master retreat. The master bath matches the rest of the house in accouterments and style, but there’s something else in the owners’ suite that probably can’t be found in any other house on the market; a closet straight from the pages of design magazine perfection. Built in dressers, a wall of shoe shelves, hanging spaces of var ying lengths, a folding table, and room to move and daydream. 3114 Bridgewater Cove needs to be seen in person to appreciate just how unique and peaceful an abode it really is. When it comes to health and wellness, the design of your home may prove to be just as important as your diet, sleep habits or exercise routine. This is the premise behind biophilic design - the idea that incorporating natural elements into your home, such as wood or plants, can actually improve overall health. In reviewing existing research from Canada and Austria on the health impact of wood and other natural elements, environmental psychologist Dr. Sally Augustin and researcher Dr. David Fell of FPInnovations found that humans automatically relax when they are surrounded by elements from the natural world. In fact, these materials have a pronounced effect on the autonomic nervous system, lowering blood pressure and stress levels. “When we experience things in a built environment that are similar to
hospitable natural spaces that sheltered humans for thousands of years, we feel relaxed and de-stressed in a profound way,” Augustin says. “We are not as stressed in difficult situations and our lives are improved.” While most research on biophilic design has focused on schools and healthcare settings, both Augustin and Dr. Fell say the same principles apply to home building and design. “Everyone responds positively to natural materials. These are biological responses, not learned,” Fell says. Though we all can’t have sweeping views of the ocean or find the forest in our backyard, homeowners can make easy fixes to up the nature quotient in their homes.
