Make your home more cat-friendly Millions of people cannot imagine life at home without their cats. Cats make wonder ful pets, bringing their own unique personality into a home and providing companionship to their owners. As great as cats are, millions still enter animal shelters ever y year. According to the ASPCA, roughly half of the 6.5 million companion animals that enter United States animal shelters each year are cats. And while figures are thankfully on the decline, hundreds of thousands of those cats end up being euthanized. Local animal shelters are home to many cats that would make great pets, and prospective cat owners are urged to visit such shelters to find cats that would make welcome additions to their homes. For those who find cats to take home, the following are a handful of ways to make a home as cat-friendly as possible. • Take stock of appliances that pose as safety risks: Certain appliances pose potentially significant threats to cats’ safety. For example, International Cat Care notes that open washing machines or tumble dr yers, par ticularly those with warm clothes inside, may be too tempting for cats to ignore. Unsuspecting homeowners may close the doors to washers and dr yers, trapping cats inside, or even turn the appliances on without recognizing the cats are inside. Always keep

doors to such appliances closed, and check to make sure cats are not inside before using these appliances. Paper shredders and work stations with lots of wires also pose a safety risk to cats, so make sure these appliances and areas are inaccessible. • Watch how cats behave around cat flaps: Some cats respond positively to cat flaps, while others do not. Cat flaps also may invite other cats into a home, which can upset your cat and make it vulnerable to attack. While some cats may want the freedom a cat flap allows, others may be on edge around the cat flap. Without question, the Griffith Avenue area is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in town. From its schools and historic structures to its natural beauty and congenial atmosphere, many residents have their eye on this area when they make plans to relocate. Fortunately, a deal of a property just came on the market. Built in 1962, 2005 Crestwood Drive sits just inside the Shifley-York neighborhood on a sunny corner lot abutting Bosley Road. For the past eight and a half years, it’s been the home of Gordy Wilcher, who owned the beloved Owensboro Music Center until selling the property recently.

Gordy says while his love of the area is what drew him to the neighborhood, the home’s craftsmanship led him to purchase the property. “I personally am a fan of the Bedford stone-type style of houses,” Gordy says, adding that he “chose it because it had upgraded windows and was very low maintenance on the exterior of the house.” Beautiful hardwood floors gleam in the living room, while the bedrooms feature new carpeting. Fresh paint, newer bathroom fixtures and upgraded kitchen appliances give it an edge of modernity. The air conditioning unit and roof are also only a few years old. “One thing I really like about the house (is that) the kitchen has an open (design) concept and a really large din-

ing area, separated by a counter,” Gordy says. “It’s a really nice area for dining.” The home also features one full and two half baths, a covered patio in the fenced-in backyard, a detached two-car garage, storage shed and three bedrooms, with room for a fourth. “There’s a den that’s actually served as a master bedroom,” Gordy says, “so it has the possibility of having four bedrooms.” At 1,919 square feet, there’s plenty of space for living, relaxing and entertaining. “My favorite place, weather-permitting, was the outside on the patio, barbecuing or entertaining,” Gordy says. “(The property is) a beautiful, big corner lot. And I really enjoy Crestwood because ... it’s a long block, very quiet. There’s not a

lot of traffic.” And, he adds, you can’t beat the home’s location in a picturesque, established neighborhood, as well as its proximity to Owensboro’s west-side amenities. “It’s ver y convenient to anything you want,” Gordy says. “You can almost walk to grocer y stores, convenience stores, restaurants. Keep your home safe from fires BY BRANDPOINT

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms — often due to missing alarm batteries or expired alarms. A new generation of home safety technology — combined with tried-and-true safety practices — can help keep homes and families safer from the threat of home fires. The following are tips to keep your family safe and healthy. • Be safe, replace: If you can't think of the last time you installed a smoke alarm, chances are, it's time to replace your old ones. All smoke alarms — including battery and hard-wired models — are tested to function for 10 years. Installing new alarms ensures you are protected with the most advanced smoke-sensing technologies and latest safety features available. Conversely, by neglecting to replace alarms, you could be putting yourself, your family or tenants at serious risk. • Go for a 10: One of the greatest advancements in smoke alarm technology in recent years has been the development of new 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms, such as First Alert's 10-Year Atom Smoke & Fire Alarm, which consumers have used to add fire protection to their homes. The Atom features an advanced smoke entry system designed to reduce the chances of false alarms, along with a loud, penetrating siren. In addition, 10-year alarms provide hassle-free protection so homeowners, property owners and renters no longer need to remember to replace costly batteries for the life of their alarms. They also eliminate the risk of having an alarm deactivated due to battery removal. In many areas of the country, upgrading to 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms is also the law. Several states, including California, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Louisiana, New York and Oregon, as well as the cities of Phoenix, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Milwaukee and New York City, have passed laws requiring 10-year battery smoke alarms in residential buildings. Other states and municipalities are considering similar legislation. • Double-up on safety: There are two main types of smoke alarms — photoelectric and ionization — which utilize different technologies to sense smoke and fire. Ionization smoke alarms are more responsive to fast-flaming fires, while photoelectric smoke alarms are generally more responsive to fires that begin with a long period of smoldering (called “smoldering fires”). Rather than relying solely on one, install both — or a dual-sensor alarm — to maximize your protection. The NFPA and other safety advocates recommend having dual-sensor alarms because they provide the best potential for early detection of all types of common household fires. The First Alert 10-Year Alarm Life Dual Sensor Smoke & Fire Alarm provides the peace of mind of a dual-sensor alarm with the convenience of a 10-year sealed lithium battery. To put this into perspective, the average-sized home in America — a two-story, three-bedroom house — needs a minimum of five smoke alarms.
