The best in country living

STORY BY JODI KEEN MESSENGER-INQUIRER

PHOTOS BY DALTON ADKINS ADKINS MEDIA

Take a drive through east Daviess County, and you’ll discover the unique property at 5111 Jones Road that sits amid the gently sloping hills and forested acreage. This gorgeous home is built as a striking contemporary structure but decorated like a cozy lodge. Its exposedbeam ceilings, chiseled stone fireplaces and pegged hardwood floors invite you to grab a hot beverage, sidle up to the hearth and relax. Add to it an abundance of windows and natural light, along with two-tier decks on the front and back of the house, and you’d easily forget you were only a few short miles from town. When Nancee and Bobby Woodward built up the property in 1976, it

was important to them that the house’s aesthetic complement the surrounding landscape. “I think we wanted a natural, rustic feel since we were situated in a wooded area. We wanted to fit in with that,” Nancee says. “We had seen some similar houses, and we were sort of interested in the contemporary look of the house situated in the woods.” When building, the Woodwards decided they wanted large rooms and lots of windows so they could have a commanding view of the property. With their taste for complementary styles, eye for detail and respect for nature, the resulting 2,860-square-foot home at 5111 Jones Road is a comfortable country estate. The house is unique in that its main gathering areas — great room, kitchen and dining room — are located on the upper floor, all leading out to the

600-square-foot deck overlooking the pasture. It embraces a split bedroom concept, with the master suite on the second level — says Nancee, “The whole upper floor is convenient.” The master suite boasts more vaulted ceilings, an expansive walk-in closet and a luxurious bathroom with dual sinks, a walk-in shower and a separate tub. The lower floor features two more bedrooms (both with walk-in closets), an additional two full bathrooms and an impressive family room. With the latter’s game and recreation area and another (and even larger) stone fireplace, this space is sure to be the entertainment center and official gathering place of the house. Nancy says it’s also the perfect spot for children to spread out with their friends. “It’s nice (that), as they get older, they have their own area,” Nancee says, add-

ing that the property as a whole caters to a family. “It’s a great place to raise kids. There’s a lot to do out there.” Additional amenities include a twocar attached garage with workshop, a 38 foot-by-78 foot 10-stall horse barn and a 40 foot-by-60 foot equipment building. The Woodwards purposely positioned the buildings so that they are in full view of the house. “The barn’s in excellent shape and really well built,” Nancee says. “We copied our stalls from the way the fairgrounds in Louisville did their stalls.” The farm is set on 18 acres, with an adjacent 22 acres for sale. That wooded area opens into the Woodcrest neighborhood, giving the lot developmental potential, too. Steve Castlen, L. Steve Castlen Realtors

Holiday hosting in small spaces G

atherings of family and friends are a big part of the holiday season. Hosting such gatherings can be a great way to show loved ones how much you appreciate them, and hosting also saves hosts the trouble of traveling during one of the most hectic travel seasons of the year. When hosting a large crowd at home, space can be a difficult hurdle to clear. However, a few helpful strategies can help space-starved hosts pull off a holiday soiree where everyone is comfortable.

PARE DOWN THE MENU

Holiday feasts don’t have to resemble medieval banquets with excessive amounts of food and drink. Hosts with small kitchens and tiny dining quarters can pare down the menu, limiting offerings to just a single entree and a few simple side dishes, so everyone feels comfortable at the table and has ample room to eat. A small menu also gives hosts more time to spend with their loved ones during the festivities.

DON’T OVERDO IT ON DRINKS, EITHER

When planning the drinks menu, avoid offering cocktails, which take time to prepare and often require guests to visit the kitchen for refrigerated ingredients. Limit drinks to wine, beer, water, and soft drinks, storing cold beverages in a cooler kept outside on a front or back porch or in an area outside the kitchen so cooks can work without interruption.

MOVE SOME FURNITURE

If your main living space is small, consider moving some bulky furniture into a bedroom or office where guests won’t be spending time. Then make better use of the open living space by placing folding chairs or other accommodations to ensure there’s ample seating for everyone. A single recliner can only be enjoyed by one person, but removing it from a room may create enough space for as many as three folding chairs.

GO SMALL ON DECORATIONS

If you know you’ll be hosting in advance of the holiday season, decorate with guests in mind. That might mean skipping a six-foot Christmas tree in favor of one that takes up less space. Avoid leaving any fragile decorations out, as adults or overexcited kids may knock them over as they try to navigate a cramped space.

How to create a winter-friendly outdoor living space

For many homeowners, the arrival of fall and winter marks an end to time spent lounging and dining al fresco on the patio. But cold air does not necessarily mean patio furniture must be packed up until flowers bloom anew in spring. In its 2017 Home Design Trends Survey, the American Institute of Architects found that consumers continue to emphasize practical features that expand the functionality of their homes via heavy investment in outdoor living spaces. The survey found that the popularity of outdoor living spaces increased by 72 percent between 2012 and 2017, highlighting just how much homeowners enjoy spending time outdoors. By taking measures to make their outdoor living spaces winterproof, homeowners can enjoy these areas of their homes even more. • Cover your deck: A covered deck may appear to make the space less enjoyable during spring and summer. However, covered decks can protect residents from the sun on especially hot days while also making the space more functional in winter. An overhead shelter on a deck can be outfitted with heaters

(and fans to provide a cooling effect in summer) and allow residents to sit outside and watch snow fall without getting wet. • Plant the right trees: Coniferous trees prevent wind, which can be especially harsh in winter. Homeowners who are unsure about which direction wind typically comes from can consult a landscape architect to determine where to plant the trees to ensure they’re most effective. • Fire up the patio: A firepit or fireplace can warm up an outdoor living area, making such a space warm and cozy even on a cold winter night. A patio with a built-in firepit can cost a pretty penny, but such an addition can withstand winter weather better than a standalone firepit, which might be vulnerable to being tipped over by winter winds. • Install lighting: The sun sets early in winter, so homeowners won’t be able to rely on natural light to illuminate their outdoor living spaces well into the evening like they do in summer. Heat lamps can be used to both warm and illuminate a space, serving dual, budget-friendly functions.
