oliday hosts have a lot on their plates. The work of holiday hosting does not begin when the first guest arrives. It starts weeks before, when homeowners begin preparing their homes for overnight guests. Because the holiday season can be so busy, it’s easy for hosts to overlook certain things as the day their first guests are set to arrive draws nearer. But the following are a few things hosts should consider in the weeks before their guests show up.
Activities
If guests will be staying for several nights, explore a few local activities so everyone can get out of the house for a night or two. Time spent with family is one of the best parts of the holiday season, but spending all of that time inside in cramped quarters can grow uncomfortable over time. Plan a family night or two out that everyone can enjoy.
Accommodations
It’s hard to overlook accommodations when hosting for the holidays, but it’s best to inspect linens and other items that might go largely unused throughout much of the year. Check foldout couches or air mattresses a few weeks before your guests are slated to arrive. This gives you ample time to address any issues and also allows you to comparison shop and find great deals on any items you need to replace. Hosts who are parents to young children may want to discuss sleeping arrangements before guests arrive if kids will be asked to sleep in different beds. Kids might embrace the change, while others might be less enthusiastic. If younger cousins will be staying over, let kids choose their new roommates, which might make them more excited about

sharing rooms with their guests. Explaining the situation in advance gives youngsters time to ready themselves for their temporary move.

Ask guests before they arrive if they have any particular food allergies or items they need to avoid because of any medications they might be taking. s we seek to simplify our lives, the desire for small-space living - even one-room living seems more attractive than ever. But whether you’re ready to join the tiny house movement or just want to get the most out of a compact space in your home, there are easy things you can do to make a small space look, feel and function like a larger one. “There’s no need to sacrifice great design if you live in a small space. A few simple changes are all you need to make it feel bigger, more beautiful and a reflection of your personality,” says Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing, Sherwin-Williams. Look overhead and underfoot. Consider using every conceivable space to please the eye -even the ceiling. “I love the idea of reflecting the shape of your dining room table with a bold accent color on the ceiling above it,” says Jordan. Another idea: define a space at the floor level with an area rug beneath a couch and side table. Multitasking solutions. If you’re always multitasking, your furniture can do the same. Place an ottoman with a hidden storage compartment or flip-top serving tray beside a comfy chair. Move a twin bed next to the wall and add big patterned pillows to create seating space by day, and sleeping space by night. The pillows can also provide extra floor seating for entertaining.

The answer is written on the wall. Walls can also be multifunctional. Sketch Pad, a clear gloss coating, can turn any surface into a dry erase board, and goes over any paint color. Instead of cluttering up the walls with bulletin boards, write directly on the wall by a computer desk, or scribble messages and doodles in the kitchen. Simply wipe it clean with a dry eraser. Have lofty ambitions. Consider creating a sleeping loft. It’s not only cozy, but leaves extra living space below. A Murphy bed that folds up discretely into the wall is another space saver. Find a focal point. It can make a space feel larger. Try painting a corner, such as a reading nook, in a bright, bold color for a mini-room effect. Or paint a piece of furniture or picture frame and elevate it to something special. Get creative with cabinetry. Take advantage of cabinetry with built-in storage features, from pullout racks that create added pantry space, to bathroom cabinets equipped with laundry hampers, hairdryer hooks and bins for grooming items. Expect the unexpected. Instead of painting the outside of your front door to make a bold statement, paint the inside of the door with a pop of color, such as bright yellow Cheerful or magenta Juneberry. The master suite is luxurious, with a fireplace, multiple windows and an office. “The master bedroom has the feel of being in a treehouse, because of all the windows and tall trees right outside,” Suzanne said. “It’s so relaxing to just sit in our chaise lounge in front of the fireplace and curl up with a good book or watch television.” An office connected to the master bedroom provides a place for working from home or catching up on family finances. Perhaps the most impressive feature of the master suite is the bathroom, with its air jet tub, dual vanities and shower with river-rock tile. “The shower in the master bath has three options for the
shower head,” said Suzanne. “It has a rain head, a standard shower head, and a handheld. It also has glass doors and river rock tiling. It’s very luxurious.” The bathtub is an air jet tub, which means it is self-drying and does not mold or mildew. A separate sink in the toilet area provides a second vanity, and a large window over the bathtub offers a relaxing view. The home is beautifully-landscaped, with a circular retaining wall in front and trees all around the yard. Situated on 1.7 acres, this property is both spacious and private. “We see a lot of wildlife out here,” Suzanne remarked. “Sometimes we see deer walking through the yard.” Backyard entertaining is a breeze with the deck space this home has to offer. “There are multiple levels of deck,” Suzanne said. “There is also an aggregate patio between the decks, so there is more than enough room for backyard entertaining. Clean up all those pesky pine needles D

espite how well you may tend to Christmas trees and wreaths, you can expect some pine needles to find their way onto your floors during the holiday season. Such needles can become imbedded in carpeting or stuck in socks and furniture, proving to be quite a nuisance. Attempting to vacuum them all up can be frustrating, as some vacuums simply do not have the suction power to handle all of those heavy needles. Plus, they can become lodged in the inner cavities of the vacuum and clog it. To lessen the mess, wrap a tree bag around the base of the Christmas tree when you are setting it up and hide it under the tree skirt. This bag will catch many of the needles that fall off during the season. Each day, sweep any needles that make it to the floor so they are not tracked around the house throughout the month of December. Think about making a homemade sticky needle catcher. Wrap duct tape around your hands or a broom with the sticky side facing out, then pat areas of the floor where needles have accumulated, and the needles will likely stick to the tape. If you want the evergreen aroma to last a little longer in your home, place collected pine needles in a cloth satchel and make a potpourri bag for an inexpensive air freshener.

he holiday season allows people to transform their homes into wonderlands of lights, garlands and poinsettias. Each family has its own holiday traditions, and decorations are a part of many of those traditions. Decorations might be awe-inspiring, but those that include lights often lead to substantially higher energy bills. Fortunately, there are ways for homeowners, whether they prefer subtle displays or more over-the-top arrangements, to save money and still celebrate the holiday season in style. • Switch to more efficient lights. A great way to ensure holiday displays consume less energy is to change the bulbs being strung. Incandescent lights can use 80 to 90 percent more energy than LED lights. Gradually replace older light strands with newer, energy-efficient LEDs. Not only do LEDs require less energy, but they also can last longer than incandescent bulbs, meaning you won’t have to replace them as frequently as more traditional bulbs. Furthermore, lower wattage usage means you can attach more
strands of lights together safely. • Use timers. Timers can be set to turn lights on and off at specific times, ensuring lights aren’t turning on during the daytime or being left on into the night by forgetful homeowners. Timers

also are a good safety precaution. A dark house that is normally lit up can advertise to thieves that no one is home. When lights turn on with a timer, it will create the illusion that it is business as usual in your residence.
