Spend some time exploring the quaint and friendly downtwon area overlooking the scenic Ohio River, where live music can often be found during the warmer months. Home to the RiverPark Center — the first performing arts

center established in western Kentucky — as well as the Museum of Science and History and the internationally renowned Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum, downtown Owensboro has continued to grow and draw visitors from near and far.

Sitting at the edge of Smothers Park is the Owensboro Convention Center, the can’t-miss 102,000-square-foot facility coupled with a 9,000-square-foot outdoor pier, which hosted 16 conventions and attracted more than 8,000 attendees in 2022.

The Owensboro Sportscenter, just minutes from downtown, hosted more than 3,000 fans for each of its live shows in 2022 — including REO Speedwagon and country stars Clay Walker and Tracy Lawrence.

Artist Gary Bielefeld celebrated the completion of what he refers to as his “Sistine Chapel” in October 2022. THE KENTUCKY MIRROR MOSAIC on Second Street welcomes drivers as they cross the Blue Bridge into Owensboro. Bielefeld created the first version of the incredible artwork in 1981.

OWENSBORO-DAVIESS COUNTY REGIONAL AIRPORT is a 880-acre facility with two runways and a modern terminal.

The airport is home to two airlines. Allegiant Airlines offers weekly flights to Orlando, FL, while Cape Air flies several times a week from Owensboro to St. Louis, MO, and Nashville, TN.

Airport amenities include parking for just $7 a day, free parking for passenger drop off and pickup, access to rental car and taxi services, phone charging stations and easy access to the two secure passenger areas.

RIVERPARK CENTER

THE RIVERPARK CENTER has entertained and educated visitors since its opening in 1992. Not only is the building considered a landmark on the Owensboro riverfront, it boasts a 1,479 seat auditorium (Cannon Hall), the 300 seat multipurpose Jody Berry Cabaret Theatre, an outdoor entertainment patio (The BB&T Plaza), events spaces, meeting rooms and a bricked center courtyard (Atmos Courtyard).

BLUEGRASS MUSIC HALL OF FAME & MUSEUM

THE BLUEGRASS MUSIC HALL OF FAME & MUSEUM opened its doors in 2018 and has been hosting live music events, taped television shows and music lessons ever since. Interact with the history of bluegrass music and the people and instruments who make it. Tour limited-time exhibits, permanent features and all the Hall of Fame offers. Special pricing and event packages are available for tours or groups.

OWENSBORO MUSEUM OF FINE ART

THE OWENSBORO MUSEUM OF FINE ART is Kentucky’s second largest fine art museum. The facility features three wings, two of which are on the National Register of Historic Sites, and Ryan Sculpture Park, which complements the facility and features monumental bronzes by major American artists. A permanent collection, showcased in 14 galleries, contains more than 4,000 objects of world art dating from the 15th century to the present. Exhibitions change every three months, and more than 1,000 pieces of artwork have been featured since the museum opened in 1977.

WEATHERBERRY

In late 2020, The Garden purchased WeatherBerry, a historic home built in 1840, and the adjoining 4 acres. Now, WeatherBerry is home to The Garden’s Welcome Center and includes a small gift shop.

WESTERN KENTUCKY BOTANICAL GARDEN

THE WESTERN KENTUCKY BOTANICAL GARDEN has 13 themed gardens, including the Moonlite Children’s Garden sponsored by the Bosley family. The Bill and Marilyn Young Educational Classroom provides a space for educational opportunities. The Playhouse In The Garden, in honor of Morton Holbrook, brings great fun for children at The Garden. Not only does The Garden provide essential quality-of-life benefits to our community, it serves as an important tourism driver for the economy.

MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & HISTORY

THE MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND HISTORY is centrally located in downtown Owensboro, allowing visitors of all ages to have both an educational and entertaining experience through hands-on exploration and interaction with five exhibits — the Owensboro Rotary PlayZeum, SpeedZeum, ENCOUNTER Hands-On, the Wendell H. Ford Government Education Center and The Coal Mine Gallery.

2004

Debuting as “River of Music Party,” the first ROMP Fest was staged June 24-26, 2004. Bluegrass musicians Sam Bush, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson and Ricky Skaggs, among others, performed at English Park, spearheaded by then-museum director Gabrielle Gray, drawing 5-6,000 fans.

2006

The event moved to Yellow Creek Park to draw attendees to camp and extend their stay for the duration of the festival. This venue change proved positive — the Bluegrass Museum and Daviess County Parks & Recreation were awarded the 2006 Dorothy Mullen Arts and Humanities Award for the event by the Kentucky Recreation and Park Society.

ROMP

The annual ROMP FEST offers a great deal of entertainment — from some of the nation’s biggest names in bluegrass to the bevy of vendors, the annual music festival held at Yellow Creek Park offers attendees a weekend of immersive fun.

An acronym for River of Music Party, this four-day festival put on by the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum features concerts, jam sessions, workshops, food trucks, vendors and camping at Yellow Creek Park. Past headliners include Alison Krauss, Sam Bush, John Prine, The Punch Brothers, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Old Crow Medicine Show.

2012

The festival saw a peak attendance of more than 20,000 people when Country Music Hall of Fame member Vince Gill and the Grammy-winning group Old Crow Medicine Show performed in 2012. The latter event was awarded the International Bluegrass Music Association’s “Bluegrass Event of the Year.”

2018

ROMP breaks record with more than 27,000 fans from 38 states and six countries in attendance for a lineup including multiGrammy winning bluegrass-country musicians Alison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder.

2021

DON’T MISS THE AFTER PARTY

At midnight, when the headliner exits the main stage in Yellow Creek Park, fans move across Yellow Creek to the James Lambert Pioneer Village for the After Party until around 2 a.m. (and sometimes longer!) Bands featured at the After Party are not high profile bands, but are selected for “the vibe they bring.”

After a one-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, the festival returns to Yellow Creek Park — in September rather than June — with Grammywinner Bruce Hornsby and his band, The Noisemakers, rounding out the lineup.

2022

ROMP made its full return in June with Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives, Dan Tyminski Band and Rhiannon Giddens keeping over 18,500 people entertained. The festival added artist-led workshops, focused on specific instruments, allowing artists and fans to connect and engage on a personal level.

APPLE FESTIVAL

THE APPLE FESTIVAL is a unique festival in October that celebrates the fall season and everything apple! Sample all kinds of tasty treats from food vendors, go shopping among the many arts and crafts vendors and let the kids enjoy the petting zoo or get a thrill on the many carnival rides.

AIR SHOW

An estimated 13,000 people turned out for the first OWENSBORO AIR SHOW, and the event has since drawn crowds of 30-50,000 annually. Created as a way to celebrate the reopening of Smothers Park, this event has continued to bring the community to the beautiful downtown Owensboro riverfront to watch such performers as the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds.

CHRISTMAS AT PANTHER CREEK PARK

Every year, PANTHER CREEK PARK lights up with an outdoor driving path using 400,000-plus lights throughout the park. There’s a $5 per carload charge, and wagon rides are available. Fiscal Court splits the money received with five nonprofit agencies that collect admission fees each night, starting the day after Thanksgiving through Jan. 2.

BBQ FEST

Every second weekend in May, Owensboro’s riverfront draws thousands for its famed celebration of barbecue. Most years see up to 35,000 people from several states crowding into downtown for the annual festival, where tons of chicken, mutton and pork are cooked over hickory logs and the aroma drifts throughout downtown. In addition to the local barbecue, out-of-town food vendors offer everything from Greek, to Italian, to Mexican to emu, to fast food — and anything that can be deep-fried likely will be.

DOWNTOWN LIVE

Held at the RiverPark Center, this summer series of entertainment spans 12 Fridays with an exciting array of themes each week, including Pride Night, Beer Snobs and Friends of Farmers. Catering to the 21-plus crowd, the events feature multiple bars, live music and local business vendors throughout the RiverPark Center’s indoor and outdoor facilities.

FOURTH OF JULY

What’s now the ALL-AMERICAN FOURTH OF JULY in Owensboro began more than 40 years ago as part of Summer Festival.

The City of Owensboro celebrates Independence Day in style with its annual All-American Fourth of July event. The event combines the celebration on the riverfront with additional coordinated fireworks locations throughout the city.

PORCHFEST

The front porches of the stately homes along Griffith Avenue come alive with the sound of music one Saturday each June. This annual music festival brings dozens of acts to the porches between Frederica Street and Robin Road, starting at 3 p.m. Final acts begin at 9 p.m., and food trucks are available throughout.

FRIDAY AFTER 5

FRIDAY AFTER 5 is the award-winning, summer-long series of free outdoor concerts held every Friday on the eight-block, stunning downtown Owensboro riverfront. The event includes live bands, family events, food trucks and more. There are five venues of entertainment, plus a fun, family-friendly street fair.

DAVIESS COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY

Established as a Carnegie Free Public Library at the corner of Frederica and Ninth streets in 1912, the Daviess County Public Library moved into its current home in 2007, offering more than 197,000 books, 46,000 eBooks and public access to more than 30 online databases — while providing all residents the opportunity to pursue lifelong learning and develop their recreational reading interests; and to find, evaluate and use information in a variety of formats in order to get answers to their questions. Our local library allows residents and visitors to better understand their personal and community heritage through books, films, music, family history, local history and Kentucky history.

OWENSBORO DANCE THEATRE

As one of the five 503(c) dance companies in the state of Kentucky, the OWENSBORO DANCE THEATRE is on a mission of “changing lives ... one dance at a time” through exceptional quality without compromise, education for all, innovative programs that enrich the lives of a diverse community and emphasizing health and wellness through the art of dance. Each year, the company puts on productions of “The Nutcracker” and a performance with a guest professional dance company, along with collaborative performances with surrounding schools through RiverPark Center’s Arts Teach Kids program.

THEATRE WORKSHOP OF OWENSBORO

Hailed as “The Longest Running Show in Town,” the THEATRE WORKSHOP OF OWENSBORO operates from two historic theaters, offering an eclectic season of community theater with contemporary and classic plays and musicals. Beyond the traditional fare, Theatre Workshop stages a variety of concerts, art exhibits, classes and workshops — while keeping its mission at the forefront by serving the community with gratitude. With offerings including education and volunteer programs and the wildly popular “Owensboro’s Got Talent” contest, Theatre Workshop of Owensboro continues to showcase first-rate entertainment.

OWENSBORO SYMPHONY

The OWENSBORO SYMPHONY has been a jewel of the region for more than 56 years. Founded in 1966 in a city of fewer than 45,000 people, the symphony’s level of excellence has continued to rise and develop into an ensemble of remarkable artistic power and stylistic versatility — the kind typically found only in a much larger metropolitan area.

Each season, the Owensboro Symphony offers an inspiring Subscription Series at Owensboro’s RiverPark Center. In addition, the symphony presents free summer outdoor concerts and Chamber Orchestra performances in area churches. The symphony also offers a number of unique fundraising events throughout its season. The symphony’s Education and Community Engagement programs reach thousands of individuals each year. These programs ensure that any individual — regardless of means or background — is given equal opportunity to develop skills and grow through imaginative, high-quality musical experiences.

Since then, Moonlite has served such celebrities as former President Bill Clinton, former second lady Marylin Quayle, Kevin Costner and more. The buffet is this eatery’s claim to fame, and there’s also an extensive catering department and carryout options.

OLD HICKORY has been offering delicious, award-winning, familyrecipe barbecue for more than 100 years in Owensboro. What sets them apart? Old Hickory has never had a buffet in the 102 years since Charles Foreman began barbecuing in his blacksmith shop at the corner of Frederica Street and Washington Avenue. THE GLOVER H. CARY (BLUE) BRIDGE

1940

The Glover H. Cary Bridge (locally known as the Blue Bridge) was dedicated. An event was held in downtown Owensboro to celebrate, which included a parade and a daredevil aerial act by Marjori Bailey prior to a ceremony and ribbon cutting.

1954

Proceeds from the tolls on the bridge paid for the construction cost 14 years after it was built.

1986

The bridge underwent $1.4M worth of work meant to “add 25 more years to its life,” requiring one lane of the bridge to be closed for the duration of the project. .

2011

Owensboro held the first “Bridge Day” — a unique opportunity to cross the bridge with no cars or trucks.

2020

The bridge, 80 years old, came alive with color when the city turned on the 512 new LED lights along the bridge.

CHAMBER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

Call it what you will — “the new guard,” “those kids growing up,” “the next generation” — but the members of Chamber Young Professionals are making their mark on Owensboro.

CYP, a networking group for professionals 21 to 40 years old, is designed to promote socialization, service, development and growth. After all, these young professionals will soon be thought of as leaders in our community.

“The way I see it, we’re all in this community working together and probably will be for the next 30 years or more,” said Blaine Mathew, a member of CYP for more than three years. “It’s important to be building relationships.”

And build relationships, they do. CYP hosts a variety of regular events for its members, from morning Coffee & Conversations, to lunch meetings featuring speakers from local businesses, to after hours social events and happy hours.

“We try to offer things at different times because everybody’s schedule is different,” CYP Past Chair Sara Williams said.

The schedules are different because the industries are different. Kenzie Tomes, who has been a CYP member for a little over a year, says she’s met people she never would have come in contact with — or developed more than a professional relationship with.

“I just graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 2021,” Tomes said, “so I was very new, and being able to dive headfirst into this awesome program and get in touch with people who have been doing this longer than I have … they’ve really welcomed me and encouraged me, personally, and I’ve learned from them.”

Mathew concurs. “I get to work with people in education, healthcare, architecture … I’m not only gaining contacts, but I’m making friends with people that I wouldn’t normally meet,” he said.

More than the relationships — both personal and professional — coming together with other community professionals allows unique opportunities for development. Not only can newer professionals benefit from seeing how people interact or even dress, learning opportunities are built into the programming.

Lunch events often feature speakers from local businesses. Philanthropic efforts allow members a chance to engage with the community as well as develop skills that can be used in the workforce and beyond.

“It’s definitely helped my leadership skills,” Williams said. “Because CYP has an arranged age group, you’re in contact with people who are a lot more established in their careers, and you can learn from them. It’s just a great way to grow.”

TRUNNELL’S

TRUNNELL’S FARM MARKET has been in business since 1990, when the family started selling sweet corn at its Utica farm stand. Finding an audience for locally-grown produce, the family began expanding their vegetable crops. Business was good enough for the family to open a new farm market building in 2008 and to open the Family Fun Acre the following year.

The Family Fun Acre features 30-plus attractions such as a corn maze, a jumbo jumping pillow, pumpkin patch, peach orchard, blackberry patch, the Grain Train and a pedal tractor track for children and adults.

HAYDEN FARMS is a cattle and poultry farm that has been in business since 1983. The farm specializes in raising herds and flocks with a priority on animal welfare and received Beef Quality Assurance certification, which is awarded to farms that raise cattle under optimum management and environmental conditions.

The farm sells freezer beef by the quarter and runs D2 Meats, which offers more than 20 cuts of beef, including steaks, brisket, stew meat, ground beef patties and short ribs.

REID’S ORCHARD

REID’S ORCHARD was established when the family patriarch, Allan Reid, immigrated from Scotland and settled in Kentucky. The east-Daviess County orchard grows several varieties of apples, freestone and redskin peaches, strawberries, vegetables and flowers from the greenhouse.

The orchard is also home to Reidland Play Area, a children’s activity area featuring corn and soybean mazes, inflatables, games, the Berry Bouncer, gemstone mining and more.

Keith Riney has spent more than 40 years in produce — and RINEY FARMS continues to offer fresh produce to the community.

Well known for its regular booth at the Owensboro Regional Farmer’s Market, Riney Farms also operates a produce stand in West Louisville.

The season runs from February to November, and offerings include several varieties of tomatoes, onions, peppers, green beans, potatoes and much, much more.

THE COTTAGE, owned by Marlene Knight, is in a 1,000-square-foot home that’s been part of the Knight family farm for a century. The rural retail shop and restaurant sells coffee, including local roaster Big Turkey Foot Coffee, and much more.

HILL VIEW FARMS MEATS was established in 2013 by the Gilles family — who can trace their roots through five generations of Daviess County farmers.

CECIL FARMS

CECIL FARMS is a communitysupported agriculture co-op that delivers fruit, vegetables and specialty items to homes in the Owensboro region. Educators in the Workplace is a program that provides opportunities for educators to tour local facilities and speak with businesses about operations and expectations of employees.

“It is designed to allow teachers to gain exposure to what is available in the workplace in the Greater Owensboro area,” said Ashtin Warren, director of talent programs at the Chamber of

Relaunched in 2022, the first session of Educators in the Workforce focused on manufacturing and took teachers to Sun Windows, Mizkan America and Owensboro Community and Technical College. Other areas of focus include Information Technology, STEM, healthcare and transportation/logistics.

“This allows (educators) to become more aware of what expectations employers have,” Warren said.

Aaron Aud, exceptional needs teacher at Owensboro High School, is a member of the program and said the teachers have learned that “soft skills,” such as showing up for work on time, understanding requirements, being safe and following procedures, are skills that employees need to focus on, along with other aspects of a job.

“There is some education and training that goes into certain positions,” Aud said. “Some employees may move along in the hiring and training process if they show they’re willing to learn and train.”

Daviess County High School agriculture teacher Chad Askins, program participant, said teachers are the “last leg of the train” in secondary education before students enter the workforce.

Askins said Candance Castlen Brake, Chamber CEO and president, and Warren have done “amazing work” in getting this program organized, and that it is a great opportunity.

“It’s important that the students serve the community as best as possible,” Askins said. “We can keep good paying jobs here with good workers and a workforce that can sustain it.”
