BLUEGRASS MUSIC HALL OF FAME & MUSEUM 311 W. Second Street • bluegrasshall.org Owensboro first began talking about what’s now the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum in 1985. A preview version opened in 1992 in the RiverPark Center, and it opened full time a decade later after the state pumped $3 million into the facility. Finally, in October 2018, the new $15.3 million, three-story Hall of Fame opened. Its state-of-the-art Woodward Theatre has been used as a movie theater and venue for television shows, including filming for PBS programming. The Hall of Fame has taken over the publication of Bluegrass Unlimited, the genre’s leading publication, brought the Official Kentucky State Fiddle Championship to Owensboro as an annual event and created a 13-episode television series, “My Bluegrass Story,” for RFDTV. “This is the only bluegrass hall of fame and museum in the world,” Chris Joslin, the Hall’s executive director, tells visitors. “If bluegrass music has a permanent address, it’s Owensboro, Kentucky.”

Songwriter Series

Education

The Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum launched “The Nashville Songwriter,” a new concert series, in September 2019. Songwriters perform and talk about their songs and experiences as songwriters.

The Hall of Fame offers beginner and advanced music lessons on guitar, mandolin, banjo and fiddle each fall and spring. There are also classes on band development and jamming. Clogging classes are also offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays year round. Each session lasts six weeks.

OWENSBORO CONVENTION CENTER 501 W. Second Street • owensborocenter.com

10 | GREATER OWENSBORO

The Owensboro Convention Center is western Kentucky’s premier meeting space. A fullservice facility overlooking the Ohio River in downtown Owensboro, the multi-purpose center now includes an indoor sports arena. Laura Alexander, general manager of the convention center, said the 45,000-square-foot main exhibit hall can be converted into three basketball or futsal courts or nine volleyball courts. The center boasts just under 102,000 square-feet of available space, including a 44,000-plus square-foot exhibition hall, the 8,900-plus square-foot Kentucky Legend® Pier outside overlooking the scenic Ohio River and additional ballroom, meeting and pre-function space.

RIVERPARK CENTER

101 Daviess Street • Riverparkcenter.org

GhostLight Lounge

Named for the tradition of theaters and their long tradition of leaving a “ghost light” — a single bulb — burning whenever a theater is otherwise dark, the RiverPark Center’s GhostLight Lounge opened during the 2021 Friday After 5 season. The facility, located in the former Woodward’s Cafe on the south side of the Atmos Energy Courtyard, is also open during RiverPark Center events. It has a full bar with local bourbon and craft beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks. Food can be brought in from a food truck or another restaurant. RiverPark Center Executive Director Rich Jorn said the GhostLight Lounge is a cozy space where individuals can hang out after a performance. People can also gather in the courtyard outside of the lounge when it isn’t in use and play outdoor games. Tables can be set up for overflow crowds.

Taste of Owensboro For 25 years, the RiverPark Center has been offering community members easy access to Owensboro-centric restaurants and eateries. Each year, dozens of restaurants are scattered in booths throughout the center to provide a sampling of what they serve for Owensboroans. The Taste of Owensboro also typically has offerings of adult beverages and soft drinks from local restaurants, bars or wineries, as well as live music. The event also features a silent auction, from which the proceeds go toward the RiverPark Center’s educational programs. The event is meant to be a laid back chance for community members to eat, drink and be merry.

Hops on the Ohio Cody Anderson, an Owensboro native who lives in Bowling Green, wanted to bring a festival to the city to showcase the craft beer industry and how people locally and regionally have begun to support what he called the “craft beer movement.” Thus, Hops on the Ohio was born in 2018 and has been planned each year since then at the RiverPark Center. According to RiverPark officials, the festival is a fundraiser for the performing arts venue. Due to sponsorships by area breweries and companies, 100% of the money from admission ticket sales go to the RiverPark. GREATER OWENSBORO | 11

ROMP FEST 5710 Kentucky 144 • rompfest.com The annual ROMP Fest offers a great deal of entertainment — from some of the nation’s biggest names in bluegrass to the bevy of vendors, the annual music festival held at Yellow Creek Park offers attendees a weekend of immersive fun.

Food Trucks

14 | GREATER OWENSBORO

“We try to have a variety of options for people,” Chris Joslin, executive director of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum, which stages ROMP, said. “Some fan favorites are there every year ... And we try to add new options every year.” The lineup includes farm-to-table, local and organic food vendors with options ranging from barbecue to vegetarian to vegan. “We have Gene’s Health Food, and we try to have food that people can indulge themselves with,” Joslin said. “But we don’t have carnival food.”

culture

1

FUNFACTS ROMP is an acronym for “River of Music Party,” because it started in English Park on the banks of the Ohio River.

2 3

The first festival in 2004 drew between 5,000 and 6,000 fans from as far away as Japan and Europe.

In 2006, ROMP moved to Yellow Creek Park in Thruston. “The first time I saw that park, I said it was the most perfect site I’d ever seen for a festival,” said Gabrielle Gray, who was then executive director of the International Bluegrass Music Museum.

After Party At midnight, when the headliner exits the main stage in Yellow Creek Park, fans move across the park to the James Lambert Pioneer Village for the After Party. “It runs from midnight to around 1:30 or 2 a.m.,” Joslin said. “Sometimes, it goes longer, but we try to give people time to sleep.” Bands selected for the After Party “have more to do with the vibe they bring,” he said. “They’re not high-profile bands. It’s a great showcase for up-andcoming bands. For the most part, they’re high-energy, progressive bands.”

4

ROMP lost money every year through 2008, and for a time, it looked like 2009 might be its last year because the Great Recession was hurting sponsorships. But the board voted to keep it.

“It’s spectacular. If people don’t know what’s happening here, they’re missing out.”

“There’s great music, it’s a very calm, enjoyable environment, family friendly, and it’s not overpriced. Some festivals gouge you, but this is just really chill.”

“It’s very relaxed, peaceful, even with the amount of people out here. It’s nice to just sit and relax and enjoy some music.”

5

In 2018, when Alison Krauss made her first appearance at the festival, it drew a record crowd of more than 27,000 fans from 38 states and six countries to Yellow Creek Park. GREATER OWENSBORO | 15

festivals

APPLE FESTIVAL 4818 Kentucky 144 • reidorchard.com Billy and Kathy Reid started the Apple Festival in 1986 as a way to invite the community together to celebrate, educate and provide for one another. That first year, it had 20 craft booths, three rides for the younger children and approximately eight food booths. It has since grown to 100 craft booths, 20 food booths and an entire carnival with 20 rides. The festival has been named a Top 10 event by the Kentucky Tourism Council and a Top 20 event by the Southeast Tourism Society, which covers 11 states. 16 | GREATER OWENSBORO

CHRISTMAS AT PANTHER CREEK 5160 Wayne Bridge Road • daviesscountyparks.com In 2003, Daviess Fiscal Court launched Christmas at Panther Creek, which was then billed as “western Kentucky’s premier holiday lights driving tour.” An estimated 10,000 vehicles, with people from several counties, toured the park. The idea was to familiarize people in the area with where Panther Creek Park is located. There was no admission charge in 2003. Today, admission is $5 a carload. Fiscal Court splits the money received with five nonprofit agencies that collect admission fees each night from the day after Thanksgiving until Jan. 2. In 2020, an estimated 10,000 vehicles drove through the park looking at 500,000 Christmas lights, raising $50,000.

OWENSBORO AIR SHOW 2200 Airport Road and Downtown • OwensboroAirshow.com In 2012, the City of Owensboro created the Owensboro Air Show as a way to celebrate the reopening of Smothers Park after a $68 million expansion. An estimated 13,000 people turned out for the event. The air show has continued every year except 2020, when it was among many events canceled by the coronavirus pandemic. When the air show returned in 2021, it was “one of the Top 10 air shows in the country,” according to Tim Ross, the city’s public events director. Ross said the performers “commented about how much they love coming to Owensboro because of the way they’re treated here.” He said, “I’m proud of the fact Owensboro has built a brand as far the air show industry goes. Cities like Nashville don’t get the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds and the Snow Birds as often as we’ve had them.”

ALL-AMERICAN FOURTH OF JULY

INTERNATIONAL BAR-B-Q FESTIVAL Downtown • bbqfest.com Every second weekend in May, Owensboro’s riverfront draws thousands to its famed celebration of barbecue. Most years see up to 35,000 people from several states converging into downtown for Owensboro’s annual two days of gluttony, where calories are forgotten during festival time downtown. Tons of chicken, mutton and pork are cooked over hickory logs, and the aroma drifts throughout downtown. The smoke signals barbecue fans to head for the riverfront. In addition to the tons of local barbecue, out-of-town food vendors offer everything from Greek to Italian to Mexican to emu to fast food. Anything that can be deepfried likely will be. The event was created in 1979 to promote Daviess County barbecue. In 2016, it was named the nation’s third-best barbecue festival in USA TODAY’s 10 Best Barbecue Festivals Readers’ Choice competition. But locals will argue that it should be No. 1.

What’s now the All-American Fourth of July in Owensboro began more than 40 years ago as part of Summer Festival, an event that replaced the Owensboro Hydrofair, which had replaced the Owensboro Regatta. Before 1981, fireworks had been part of the boat races, which rarely fell on July 4. But Summer Festival began including fireworks, along with a pops concert by the Owensboro Symphony every year on Independence Day. When the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, the city created the Healthy at Home Fireworks — shooting fireworks from several places in the city so people could enjoy them without being in crowds. “The unique way we celebrated [in 2020] with locations throughout the city was a huge success,” Tim Ross, director of public events, said. “Other cities around the country even began using that same concept due to crowd size restrictions after seeing how well it worked here in Owensboro.” GREATER OWENSBORO | 17

FRIDAY AFTER 5 Downtown • fridayafter5.com Friday After 5 is the summer-long series of free outdoor concerts held every Friday on the eight-block, beautiful downtown Owensboro riverfront. Named a “Top Ten Summer Festival” in Kentucky, the award-winning event includes live bands, family events, food trucks and more. Seven stages stretch from the RiverPark Center to the Holiday Inn to create a full mile of music. There’s a fun, family-friendly street fair, and Smothers Park is located right in the middle of it all.

PORCHFEST Griffith Avenue • porchfestobky.com The front porches of the stately homes along Griffith Avenue come alive with the sound of music on one Saturday each June. Andy Brasher and Tamarra Miller created PorchFest in 2018. In 2021, nearly three dozen musical acts performed at PorchFest ‘21 on 11 porches between Frederica Street and Robin Road. The music lasts from 3 to 9 p.m. Parking is available at Owensboro High School for a fee and on side streets for free. Griffith Avenue is closed to traffic starting at noon. Several food trucks are available each year. “I was invited to perform at a porch festival in Morgan City, Louisiana, in 2016,” Brasher said. “It was the first event of that kind that I had experienced, and I was blown away. Neighbors were gathering together in yards, on the sidewalks, strolling and enjoying great music in a friendly community atmosphere.” It harkens back to the days before television when neighbors would get together on porches to talk and make music, he said. And Brasher knew he wanted to see it duplicated in Owensboro.

Beyond the traditional fare, Theatre Workshop puts on a variety of concerts, art exhibits, classes and workshops — while keeping its mission at the forefront by serving the community with gratitude for the visionaries and volunteers who have sustained the organization through the years, and with an optimistic eye toward the future. With offerings such as its education and volunteer programs, to the wildly popular “Owensboro’s Got Talent” contest, Theatre Workshop of Owensboro continues to showcase first-rate entertainment.

OWENSBORO DANCE THEATRE 2705 Breckenridge Street • owensborodancetheatre.org As one of the five 503(c) dance companies in the state of Kentucky, the Owensboro Dance Theatre is on a mission of “changing lives...one dance at a time” through exceptional quality without compromise, education for all, innovative programs that enrich the lives of a diverse community and emphasizing health and wellness through the art of dance. OWENSBORO SYMPHONY 211 E. Second Street • theoso.com The Owensboro Symphony has been a jewel of the region for more than 56 years. The Symphony Stroll created a new way for the community to enjoy performers in a safe, unique, outdoor environment while doing Christmas shopping downtown. The event had so much success, it will become a staple for the area, according to symphony officials. The upcoming season will feature bagpiper soloist Eric Rigler and five-time Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum-selling pianist and vocalist Michael Feinstein, who will join the season finale. The Owensboro Symphony has performed its annual Concert on the Lawn for more than 30 years. Each year, the symphony provides a free concert on the front lawn of Kentucky Wesleyan College. Most recently, the event featured Grammy- and Emmy-award-winning vocalist Laura Dickinson, who joined the “A Tribute to the Circus” show. Owensboro Symphony officials tout the event as a great opportunity for community members to have a taste of what the orchestra has to offer in a comfortable and accessible environment.

White Chateau at Cecil Farms The 4,000 square-foot luxury wedding venue is situated on a hill overlooking Cecil Farms and is available for both indoor and outdoor weddings. Inside, there are vaulted ceilings with a floor-to-ceiling fireplace. The space can hold up to 150 people indoors, or 200 guests using the indoor space and outdoor covered patios. The venue rents for 12 hours the day of an event and comes with tables, chairs, a bridal dressing suite, a catering kitchen and onsite staff to prepare the room in advance, take care of details during the event and clean up afterwards. The venue staff create specialized floor plans for weddings based on the wedding party’s wants and needs, and the venue has a list of preferred caterers for events. The Robinette Farmhouse, which is across the hill from the venue, is available to rent for wedding parties who want to spend the night at the farm.

CECIL FARMS 8753 Mulligan Road • cecilfarmspd.com • whitechateau.com Cecil Farms is a community-supported agriculture co-op that delivers farm-grown fruit, vegetables and specialty items to homes in the Owensboro region. People purchase either a share or a half-share and decide if they want a delivery either weekly or biweekly during the growing season. Then, the farm staff pick the fruits and vegetables that are ready on a given week and deliver them. While the basket contains vegetables and fruits, other items, such as meats, eggs, breads and dairy products, can be ordered separately for delivery. In 2021, the farm provided produce to 1,300 families weekly through Owensboro Public Schools’ summer feeding program. The farm grew 25 acres of fruits and vegetables for its community support agriculture co-op programs and grew 500 acres of watermelons for sale in grocery stores. The farm also has 900 beehives for locally-produced honey. The market also sells milk and cheeses, eggs, baking ingredients and sauces, and a variety of other Kentucky-produced products. TRUNNELL’S FARM MARKET 9255 U.S. 431 • 4399 Spring Hill Drive • trunnellsfarmmarket.com Trunnell’s Farm Market has been in business since 1990, when the family started selling sweet corn at the Utica farmstead. Finding an appetite for locally-grown produce, the family began expanding their vegetable crops. Business was good enough for the family to open a new farm market building in 2008 and to open the Family Fun Acre the following year. The Family Fun Acre features more than 30 attractions, such as a corn maze, a jumbo jumping pillow, pumpkin patch, peach orchard, blackberry patch, the Grain Train and a pedal tractor track for children and adults. The farm hosts special events for children and adults in the spring, fall, summer and holidays. The family also has a market store just off Kentucky 54, near Lake Forest.

Fischer Family Farms specializes in microgreens, which are vegetable greens harvested just after the cotyledon leaves have developed. They are grown or purchased by people focused on nutrition and sometimes are used as both a visual and flavor component, primarily in fine restaurants. The farm sells vegetables and honey at the Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market, but also sells produce for pickup at the farm. Some of the vegetables the farm raises include arugula, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, wasabi mustard, peas, sunflower and cabbage.

HAYDEN FARMS 1195 New Cut Road • haydenfarms.org Hayden Farms is a cattle and poultry farm that has been in business since 1983. Owensboro TRADITIONS

Owensboro barbecue is world-renowned, and for good reason. Our restaurants and festivals bring more tourism every year, have been featured in travel publications around the U.S. and have inspired loyal local fanbases. You can’t go wrong with any of our three eateries (and really, you should try them all). OLD HICKORY BAR-B-QUE 338 Washington Avenue “This is one of the legendary restaurants of Owensboro,” John Foreman, the fifth-generation owner of Old Hickory, said. One thing that sets Old Hickory apart is that it has never had a buffet in the 102 years since Charles Foreman began barbecuing in his blacksmith shop at the corner of Frederica Street and Washington Avenue. Through the years, Old Hickory has been featured on a number of cable cooking and travel shows and has been on a number of “best” barbecue lists. MOONLITE BAR-B-Q INN 2840 W. Parrish Avenue Ken Bosley’s parents — Hugh “Pappy” and Catherine Bosley — bought Moonlite, a 14-year-old barbecue joint with 30 seats, including stools at the counter, from Sonnie and Sadie Bertram and J.C. and Betty Stinson for $50,000 in February 1963. The restaurant has served such celebrities as former President Bill Clinton, former Vice President Al Gore, former second lady Marilyn Quayle, Jim Nabors, Bill Monroe, William Shatner, Kevin Costner and Emmylou Harris. “Our buffet is our claim to fame,” Bosley said. “Mutton has dropped off. But Owensboro is the only place you can get mutton. It really sets us apart. And people who like mutton come to Owensboro.” OLE SOUTH BARBEQUE 3523 Kentucky 54 Greg Floyd got tired of the automobile industry and bought Ole South Barbecue in 2013 for a change of careers. “All barbecue in Owensboro is about the same, but we really emphasize pork — chopped and sliced,” Floyd said. He estimates that “90% of our customers are familiar with Kentucky barbecue. But we have to explain it to some. People from out of the area aren’t familiar with burgoo (a meat stew famous in Kentucky). We have to explain the ingredients.” 30 | GREATER OWENSBORO

OWENSBORO REGIONAL FARMERS’ MARKET 1205 Triplett Street • owensbororegionalfarmersmarket.org With a permanent, covered location on Triplett Street, the farmers market opens every April and runs into the fall. As the growing season progresses, vendors will sell a variety of locally- and regionally-grown fruits and vegetables. In July and August, the farmers market adds a location at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. The hospital market is open from noon to 4 p.m. each Wednesday during these months. While all the vendors accept cash and some accept personal checks, customers can also pay by credit card. The market also accepts payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT). Seniors and recipients of SNAP or Women, Infants and Children (WIC) benefits are eligible for the state’s “Double Dollars” program, which allows them to increase what they can purchase in fruit, vegetables, meats and dairy products. 34 | GREATER OWENSBORO

Hollison Technologies Years ago, Hollison Technologies CEO Kevin Humphrey had a vision of protecting people’s food supply from harmful pathogens, so he built a food sampler in his garage and invented a process that was the world’s first sampling system for food manufacturers to get a thorough sample when testing for contamination in dry food products. Major manufacturers who produce grain or dry food products can use Hollison’s process to test for Salmonella and other contaminants. “The team at Hollison is very innovative, and we are developing new probiotics products for both humans and pets,” Humphrey said. He said process automation has become a big part of what they do locally. “Our team in the systems integration group is continually enhancing our robotics and automated inspection services,” he said. “Hollison now provides design, sourcing, installation and service for robotics and other systems automation.” Humphrey said they want to be a part of the success Owensboro and Daviess County are primed to see over the next several years. Humphrey said there are high-character, skilled people in Owensboro and Daviess County who want to be part of a success story. “All great companies start with great people, so if I’m asked by a prospective new company ‘why Owensboro and Daviess County, Ky.,’ my first response will be the people,” he said. 42 | GREATER OWENSBORO

Western Academy The goal of Western Academy at the H.L. Neblett Center is to encourage, empower and educate its young male students of AfricanAmerican descent to excel and create a positive footprint, not just in Owensboro, but also on a larger scale. Led by director Olga McKissic, the academy works to close the academic achievement gap that exists in school districts for AfricanAmerican male students. Scholars, as students at the academy are called, will work to develop Bulldog characteristics, likened to their mascot, throughout their time at the institution, which include determination, stamina, perseverance and kindness. Scholars are also expected to follow the Well Principles. The Well Principles, McKicssic said, encourage scholars to be well-behaved, well-mannered, well-dressed, well-spoken, well-read and welltraveled, as the institution cites those principles as the keys for scholars to be well-balanced in life. The Western Academy also plans annual educational trips for scholars in an effort to expose them to the world and help them obtain cultural experience and prepare them for college and a career. It also hosts Saturday Sessions for scholars, which include two hours of project-based curriculum focused on math, science, robotics, and STEM, and a “power story” presented by an African-American male to share his success. The institution also assists its scholars with college scholarships and places a strong emphasis on parent commitment and involvement in the process of preparing scholars for life outside of the Western Academy.

Family Story In 2012, Paw Paw came to Owensboro with her mother, brother and sister after leaving Thailand. Shortly after arriving, Paw enrolled at Owensboro High School. She said the first day and the first year being in a new environment was difficult — leading her to keep to herself. “It was hard to make friends,” Paw said. “You don’t know anything, and everything is different from the refugee camp in Thailand.” Upon utilizing the International Center, Paw said that she and her Paw Paw family were able to make great strides in adjustmening to their new life in America. “Upon coming to the United States, (the center) found a place for (my family) … and made sure that we had a bed, we had food,” Paw said. “We didn’t have to worry about anything. They kind of took care of everything for us.” “Paw Paw’s family is really one of our success stories,” said Anna Allen, site director of the center. “They did not have any idea what to expect. The culture they are used to is completely different. There was a language barrier — none of them spoke English.” Paw was able to walk across her high school graduation stage in four years and eventually completed her associate studies at Owensboro Community and Technical College, while her mother was able to find employment, buy her own car and house, and successfully become a U.S. citizen.

INTERNATIONAL CENTER OF OWENSBORO

Paw is enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program through the University of the Cumberlands’ online program while working as a youth and family service case manager at the International Center — the same place that helped her.

2818 New Hartford Road • icofky.com The International Center of Owensboro is a site location for the main hub, the International Center of Kentucky, which is based in Bowling Green. Since its inception in 1981, the center — a refugee resettlement agency — has assisted over 10,000 refugees, victims of human trafficking and immigrants from more than 30 countries around the world. The center works closely with the Department of State and the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants in order to implement a solid support structure that will help folks to integrate and be successful while they navigate through their journeys in the United States.

“She’s helping new families come in and particularly works with students in helping them with homework, cultural orientation and learning about life skills …,” Allen said. “Now, she’s the one bridging that gap for them, which was done for her.” “I love this job,” Paw said. “The people (that I help) have the same experiences as me, so it’s like giving back to the community.”

Mission The mission of the International Center is to address the needs of refugees and immigrants in their assimilation and integration into community life by providing employment, education, housing and other social services. It is the center’s hope that the assistance it lends will fuel success and prosperity among the families it hosts. 48 | GREATER OWENSBORO

Dr. Jody Mitchell Dr. Jody Mitchell is a native of Owensboro and holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Transylvania University in Lexington. He earned his medical degree at the University of Kentucky, where he also completed an internship, family medicine residency and a primary care sports medicine fellowship. He is board certified in family medicine and specializes in sports medicine at Owensboro Health. “I interviewed at places all over the Southeast, but the facility at Owensboro Health is second to none,” said Mitchell, who was drawn to his field while rehabilitating an injury he suffered while playing for his high school tennis team. “That got me into medicine in general, but I (initially) thought I wanted to be a physical therapist.” While his career plans evolved, his passion for helping athletes recover from injuries has never wavered. “I hate seeing when athletes can’t do what they love,” he said. “We partner with them to get them back on the field. “It’s a perfect fit for me.” Mitchell, who has been with Owensboro Health for five years, was involved in the formation of the Owensboro Health Sports Medicine Walk-in Clinic. Mitchell said Owensboro Health’s commitment to providing patients with the highest standard of care, along with the chance to practice in his hometown, made returning to Owensboro “a no-brainer.” 56 | GREATER OWENSBORO

Sirak joined Owensboro Health in July 2018 after a distinguished tenure in Virginia, during which time she was twice recognized with the Northern Virginia Top Doctor Award, earning the honor in 2016 and 2017. “I had a very busy practice (in Virginia), but no time for my kids, so I was looking to slow down; I wanted a better work-life balance,” said Sirak, who couldn’t be happier with her decision to join Owensboro Health. “They have the best hospital, beautiful design, state-of-the-art rooms. “And the administration listens to what we need. We have top-notch equipment.” As a cardiologist, Sirak can diagnose and treat a wide variety of heart conditions. She can also refer patients for further specialist care if needed. If your newborn needs special care, he or she may stay in Owensboro Health Regional Hospital’s NICU. The largest of its kind in the region, the NICU can tend to babies of any weight born as early as 27 weeks of gestation. Infants will benefit from neonatal experts while parents and caregivers stay close to home and support systems. “I think it’s the opportunity to support families as they bring a new life into the world,” said Burshears of the passion that drives her work. WESTERN KENTUCKY BOTANICAL GARDEN The First Saturday at the Botanical Garden event series at the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden runs for three months in the fall and three months in the spring — diving into a number of topics that children learn about by checking out books on the content and exploring the topic through a first-hand experience activity or science experiment. Topics have included learning about natural ways to wash wax off of apples before consumption, the benefits of recycling and reusing products, how to make a plastic bag into clothing, and creating a worm habitat.

DAVIESS COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY 2020 Frederica Street • dcplibrary.org

Established as a Carnegie Free Public Library at Frederica and Ninth streets in 1912, the Daviess County Public Library moved into its current home in 2007, offering more than 197,000 books, 46,000 eBooks and public access to more than 30 online databases — providing residents the opportunity to pursue lifelong learning; to meet their recreational reading interests; to find, evaluate and use information in a variety of formats; to get answers to their questions; and to better understand their personal and community heritage through books, films, music, family history, local history and Kentucky history. The library has become one of the busiest facilities in Kentucky, with more than 478,000 visits and 74,756 registered users in 2020. It has also become one of the state’s fastest growing libraries in terms of attendance, growing over 30% in the past few years. Music programming has been a popular feature at the library since about 2014, drawing core fan bases regularly to see musicians such as touring artists Chris Staples and Taylor Dooley Burden. KIWANIS OUTDOOR MUSICAL PLAY PARK Created on the library’s grounds as the Kiwanis Club’s 75th anniversary project, the Musical Play Park opened in 2019, featuring drums, chimes and other outdoor instruments for children to enjoy while families can keep a close eye on them in the enclosed space while reading a favorite book. The park is free for anyone in the community to enjoy when the library is opened or closed.

Kids Crafts And Programs The library offers regularly-scheduled programming for infants and young children, including two “fun-filled” story times designed with both children and caregivers in mind, while enhancing early literacy skills, from 10-10:30 a.m. each Monday and Thursday. A “Wee Read,” for children age 2 and under, is a hands-on experience through interactive storytelling, crafts, finger plays and music. The “Circle Time Storytime: Mini Hands, Many Ideas,” for children between the ages of 3 to 5, allows kids to develop a variety of social skills, such as interacting with others, sharing, taking turns and expressing their feelings. This program can also better prepare children for their first years in a school setting — learning the importance of paying attention, listening and following instructions, and good decision making. INSIDE WENDELL H. FORD CENTER

MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND HISTORY 122 E 2nd Street • owensboromuseum.org Founded in 1966, the museum is in downtown Owensboro, allowing visitors of all ages to have both an educational and entertaining experience through hands-on exploration and interaction with five exhibits — the Owensboro Rotary PlayZeum, SpeedZeum, ENCOUNTER, the Wendell H. Ford Government Education Center and The Coal Mine Gallery. The museum makes a point to offer a wide range of educational programming to school groups and other organizations. Other focuses include diversity programming, leadership institutes, student forums and other topics based around the world of history and science. Attendees can also apply for a museum membership, which includes reciprocal free or reduced admission to over 300 museums in the United States through the nonprofit Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) program, free admission to the museum for one year, a 10% discount in the museum store and invites to special events throughout the year.

In honor of Wendell Hampton Ford, former U.S. senator and the 53rd governor of Kentucky, the museum’s second floor is home to a governmental gallery, created to engage people throughout all history and stages within the governmental process. While visitors have the opportunity to learn about Ford’s career in local, state and national government, they can also have a chance to grasp and understand how government works, operates and how it has transformed into what it is today.

SPEEDZEUM The exhibit that is ready to rev the engine, the SpeedZeum is a motorsports gallery that originally featured hometown NASCAR drivers Darrell and Michael Waltrip, David and Jeff Green and Jeremy Mayfield. The gallery not only highlights the people that were at the forefront of the racing scene, but also between 300 to 400 folks that were just as important on the sidelines. The Speedzeum offers a unique “Buy A Brick Campaign,” where people can honor their favorite person in the racing field by sponsoring a brick that will become a permanent fixture in the exhibit for $100. All proceeds will go to building more potential exhibits in the SpeedZeum.

KIDS AND EDUCATION A special emphasis is placed on the education of children, with three galleries designated for that purpose. The Michael E. Horn Family Foundation’s ArtLand, a fully-equipped art studio, provides free art instruction during regular museum hours. The John and Riley Hess Kaleidoscope Kave, an interactive video gallery, combines learning experiences in both the visual and performing arts, and the Waymond Morris Young at Art Gallery is a special space designated for exhibitions of art by children, and it also serves as a showcase for regional school projects. The free Owensboro Grain Company Art Camps, scheduled in spring, summer and fall, provide unique educational opportunities to the region’s youth.

IN THE COMMUNITY The museum’s services extend beyond its walls, as it shares its resources in many community partnerships. A collaborative project with the City of Owensboro has established a Municipal Art Collection, creating a showcase of public art that has placed more than 20 works of monumental outdoor sculpture throughout the city and enhances Owensboro’s reputation as a cultural tourism destination.

OWENSBORO MUSEUM OF FINE ART 901 Frederica Street • omfa.us The rapid growth and development of the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, Kentucky’s second largest fine art museum, has enhanced Owensboro’s quality of life by its contributions to education, economic development and cultural tourism. The museum’s historically important complex features three wings, two of which are on the National Register of Historic Sites, and Ryan Sculpture Park, which complements the facility and features monumental bronzes by major American artists. A permanent collection, showcased in 14 galleries, contains more than 4,000 objects of world art dating from the 15th century to the present. It is a visual mecca of American, European and Asian art. Among its treasures of internationally important works are those by 20th c. master, Pablo Picasso (1881- 1973); and early American masters Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904) and Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827). An important aspect of the permanent collection documents the cultural history of Kentucky from the early 1800s to the present, and a significant portion celebrates the internationally-recognized tradition of Appalachian Folk Art. Exhibitions change every three months, and more than 1,000 have been featured since the museum opened in 1977. Many of these exhibitions from major American museums and galleries have introduced some of the art world’s most distinguished artists, scholars, educators and critics to local audiences. BRESCIA UNIVERSITY

Brescia University was founded by the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph in 1925 as the Mount Saint Joseph Junior College for Women. It first was established at Maple Mount, but after the end of World War II, coeducational extension courses in Owensboro were developed. The second Brescia campus was established in downtown Owensboro, and the two campuses consolidated on the present site of BU in 1950. In 1998 the school received university status, and in 2018 the full-time enrollment made university history by reaching 231 students. The Moore Center was renovated in 2017, it opened a new residence hall on St. Ann St. in 2019, and in 2020, the school opened its C.E. Field Center for Professional Studies, thus completing its $3 million capital campaign. Father Larry Hostetter, Brescia president, said the fundamental Christian value referenced in the Gospel of John 15:12, in which Jesus says “Love one another as I have loved you,” is nurtured and strengthened in Brescia students.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS Brescia University recruits students internationally and currently has 42 international students enrolled, representing 19 countries — Brazil, Canada, Spain, Italy, England, Vietnam, Germany, Mexico, France, Venezuela, Lithuania, Serbia, the Dominican Republic, Scotland, Trinidad & Tobago, Zimbabwe, Colombia, Belarus and the Bahamas. BLACK STUDENT UNION Kentucky Wesleyan College’s Black Student Union typically has about 15 to 20 members each year. Students meet regularly to discuss diversity issues and challenges that people of color may face. They also discuss ways in which obstacles can be overcome and organize plans of action. The BSU also partners with area organizations, like the Boys & Girls Club and Girls Inc., to discuss with children the importance of continuing education. Alfonzo Browning, an advisor for the BSU, said the program is important because African Americans are a minority on campus, and they need a space to express their ideas comfortably. BSU provides a safe space for them and others who are in support of them, he said. 74 | GREATER OWENSBORO

KENTUCKY WESLEYAN COLLEGE Kentucky Wesleyan College, a partnership with the United Methodist Church, is a liberal arts school that prepares students intellectually, spiritually and physically to achieve success in life. Current enrollment is approximately 750 students. The school believes in “The Wesleyan Way,” which is based on four principles: We do everything with honor; we support each other; we compete with integrity; and we love each other. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate degrees. The college was established in 1858 in Millersburg and moved to Owensboro in 1950. The school offers 29 majors and 13 pre-professional curriculums. The student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1, with more than 88% of the faculty having a Ph.D or terminal degree.

OWENSBORO COMMUNITY & TECHNICAL COLLEGE

In 2018, Owensboro Community & Technical College was awarded a $523,171 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education program, with an ultimate goal of increasing the number of females participating in manufacturing training programs and careers. The project’s director, Sheri Plain, said that women make up 44% of the number of technical students enrolled at OCTC. Since then, OCTC has been working to increase that number with its GO FEMALES program, which is a product of the grant and project. GO FEMALES, which stands for Greater Owensboro Facilitating Equitable Manufacturing and Leadership Educational Solutions, follows OCTC’s work-and-learn model, which allows female workers to receive training while also working in advanced manufacturing fields in an apprenticeship-style setting.

Western Kentucky University’s regional campus brings the university’s wide variety of academic programming, resources, noncredit programs and support to Owensboro. Regional offerings include paralegal studies, management, computer information technology, teacher education, engineering technology management, criminology and sociology programs. Perhaps one of the largest programs at Western Kentucky University in Owensboro is its Bachelor of Social Work program that has been offered for more than 10 years. Most students enrolled in the program take advantage of the two-plus-two partnership the school has with Owensboro Community & Technical College, in which students receive general education courses at OCTC and then transfer to take upper-level courses at WKU in Owensboro. This design allows for students to be in smaller classes, which ensures more attention from faculty, access to advising and other necessary resources.

UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE NURSING

WKU IN OWENSBORO

The University of Louisville School of Nursing-Owensboro Bachelor of Science in Nursing program enrolled its first class in fall of 2010. To date, it has graduated almost 300 students, with 96 enrolled. Enrollment has been increasing each year, with a maximum of 35 students being enrolled each semester. The program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and has consistently exceeded benchmarks for completion, employment and licensure rates. There will also be an accelerated second-degree BSN program launching in May 2022. That program will allow individuals who already have bachelor’s degrees in other fields to obtain their BSN in 15 months.

The Murray State University-Henderson campus offers a variety of courses and programs that are taught by MSU faculty. Programs are offered at various times, in-person and online, to help accommodate student needs. OWENSBORO INNOVATION ACADEMY The Owensboro Innovation Academy opened its doors in August 2015, and along with that historical addition of a new high school came a shining spotlight on not just the area’s school systems, but also the city of Owensboro. The STEM-based high school includes students from both the Owensboro and Daviess County public school systems, as well as Hancock County Schools. A prominent feature of the school is its project-based learning for students. The OIA came out of an idea to make the city schools district one of innovation. In 2014, the school was accepted into the California-based New Tech Network, making it the first in the state to have such an affiliation. The New Tech Network is a nationwide consortium of more than 200 schools in more than 30 states. iMIDDLE As a result of the success of the high school model, the district opened the Owensboro Innovation Middle School in fall 2019 for students in the sixth through eighth grades. Nicknamed iMiddle, the school is at the south campus of Owensboro Middle School, and students have access to classes and activities at the adjoining traditional middle school.

OWENSBORO PUBLIC SCHOOLS

The Owensboro Public Schools system commemorated a milestone few other school districts in the commonwealth have had the pleasure of celebrating: a sesquicentennial. Almost 150 years ago, the city schools system was established by the Kentucky General Assembly, beginning what would become a long history of excellence in education. Of the 51 independent school systems in Kentucky, Owensboro’s is the largest and second-oldest. It has had 20 superintendents since its inception and has encompassed at least 30 schools in its history. It now operates 12 schools. Approximately half-a-million students have gone through the system in its 150-year history. There are approximately 5,000 students enrolled. The system is known for its strong academics, including arts programming that is modeled across the state. Two years in a row, the school system earned national recognition for its support of arts programming, specifically for its Every Art for Every Child program that ensures all students have a chance at arts education.

Daviess County Public Schools operates 12 elementary schools, three middle schools, two traditional high schools and one alternative high school. Approximately 11,700 students attend county schools in grades preschool through 12. Its mission is to prepare students to succeed for life by meeting individual needs of students, ensuring quality instruction and developing a learning community. The school system’s history dates to 1909, with schools located in Whitesville and Utica. In 1914, Daviess County High opened on the third floor of the federal court building, post office and custom house on the southeast corner of Third and Allen streets. The school system is embarking on major renovations to help carry it forward for years to come, including building a new Daviess County Middle School and the complete renovation of Apollo High School, both of which are slated to be complete within the next two years.

Catholic education in the Daviess County area dates to 1849, when the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth opened St. Francis Academy. The school was in a building that was formerly a hotel, at Third and Allen streets, where it operated for 40 years until increasing enrollment and requests from parents persuaded a new building to be constructed at Fifth and Allen streets. Owensboro Catholic High School opened in 1951, and in 1989 the Owensboro-Daviess County parochial schools were consolidated. Today, students from 15 sponsoring parishes as well as, Holy Name School in Henderson, Saint Pope John Paul II in Morganfield, and St. Bernard’s in Rockport, attend Owensboro Catholic Elementary K-3 Campus, Owensboro Catholic Elementary 4-6 Campus, Owensboro Catholic Middle School and Owensboro Catholic High School. The school’s mission statement shares in the mission of the Church to provide excellence in Catholic faith formation and academies that prepare students to become responsible individuals, as well as members of their family, church and community.

education

TRINITY HIGH SCHOOL Trinity High School is a private, coeducational Roman Catholic high school in Whitesville. It is in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Owensboro and operates grades nine through 12. The mission of Trinity High School is to provide a spiritual environment, together with a comprehensive educational program, dedicated to faith formation in the Roman Catholic Church. The school aims to prepare and empower students to become lifelong learners who are responsible members of the Church, their families and the community. Trinity utilizes incredible staff members, athletic and extracurricular activities to provide an optimal environment for its 102 students to grow. Advanced courses, including some college-level courses from Brescia University, Western Kentucky University and Owensboro Community & Technical College, are available. Faith formation is an integral part of being a student at Trinity High School. Freshmen focus on faith, revelation and Church teaching on the Trinity, giving students a general knowledge of sacred scripture and tradition. Sophomores focus on Morality and Theology of the Body, growing in their understanding of Christian moral life. Juniors focus on the Church and the sacraments, and the senior class delves into sacred scripture and Church history. Trinity High School also provides ample opportunities for students to volunteer.

ST. MARY OF THE WOODS SCHOOL St. Mary of the Woods School seeks to inspire excellence in academic and social skills for students preschool through eighth grade while fostering a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and preparing future leaders of the Church and community. The curriculum presents students with the same opportunities to succeed as found in local public school districts. Smaller class sizes allow for more one-on-one learning opportunities, and the faculty strives daily to meet students’ individual learning needs. Athletics feed into the sports programs at Trinity High School, and the school provides after-school and weekend experiences to enhance the core curriculum and faith development of students and families. At St. Mary of the Woods, students are free to pray, sing and talk about God. Daily prayer, learning prayers and weekly Mass encourage students to grow their friendship with Christ.

HERITAGE CHRISTAN ACADEMY Heritage Christian School was established in 1984 after parents who attended Heritage Baptist Church decided to create a learning environment characterized by academic excellence, Christian character development and loving discipline. The school began with 12 kindergarten students and added a grade each year until it reached eighth grade. The current enrollment for preschool through eighth grade is about 200 students. The school operates as a ministry of the Baptist church, under the oversight of elders Keith Maddy, Mark Redfern, Keith Withrow and Thad Gunderson. The conviction that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” is at the foundation of the school’s curriculum. Every class begins each day with a devotional time, and students work toward scripture memory, character traits, a children’s catechism and a time of prayer, which all form the backbone of the devotional time. The Bible, and Bible characters, the 10 Commandments and themes from Proverbs, the Old Testament and the life of Christ are also practical applications in students’ lives.

GRACE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Grace Christian Academy opened in the fall of 2020 in response to God’s direction and the community’s need for a Christian high school. A successful first year allowed the school to enroll another class of freshmen and returning sophomores, as well as add new faculty, classes and sports options. Students have the opportunity to participate in artistic programs, such as band, choir and theater, and are offered elective courses, such as criminal justice and personal finance. Athletic activities allow students to develop leadership and teamwork skills. The mission of Grace Christian Academy is to glorify God by equipping students with a spiritually and academically solid Christian worldview. Partnering with Christian parents allows the school to provide a biblically-integrated education, encouraging students to embrace biblical truth, strive for academic excellence and exemplify Christ-like servanthood in homes, churches and the community.

SMOTHERS PARK 199 W. Veterans Blvd.

Established as the first of Owensboro’s city parks in 1816 as Riverfront Park, today Smothers Park offers a first-class urban park experience. Owensboro’s riverfront received a $68-million renovation in 2009, with $28 million allocated specifically to Smothers Park. The iconic park, officially renamed Smothers Park in 1963, reopened to the public in 2012 following the extensive renovations. Visitors to the park can walk along the Ohio River or relax on one of the many rocking gliders that overlook the river. The outdoor batwing stage provides an excellent venue to enjoy the live music that fills the park during Owensboro’s Friday After 5 events, while three signature fountains offer a water show every 15 minutes. For the park’s youngest visitors, the Lazy Dayz Playground offers up a plethora of imaginative play with large artificial trees that could be out of a classic storybook.

OVERLOOK STAGE

FOUNTAINS

Officially known as the Overlook Stage, this open-air shelter is a unique entertainment venue located in the heart of Owensboro’s riverfront Smothers Park. Also known as the batwing stage, due to its uncanny resemblance to the wing of a bat, the Overlook Stage is the perfect place to enjoy live music and watch the sun go down along the Ohio River during one of Owensboro’s signature Friday After 5 events.

If there is one thing visitors to Owensboro’s Smothers Park are sure not to miss, it is the three water fountains that anchor the downtown park’s west end. The fountains include two sweeping, 100-foot long wing-like fountains, flanked by a round fountain that shoots water into the air, making for an eye-catching fountain show. Don’t miss the inlet waterfall located along the Ohio River that sends water down 200 foot-wide curved steps towards the river.
