Gear Up! Starter Kit Tips for Beginning Golfers
1. Golf Clubs & Bag
Look for a complete beginner set of clubs, or at a minimum, assemble the following clubs to play the game: putter; driver; three-, five-, seven- and nine-irons; and three- and five-woods. It’s a good idea to book a fitting with a golf pro before purchasing clubs to ensure proper size. Renting clubs is also an option at some golf courses. When purchasing a golf bag, look for one that is lightweight with padded straps to carry your clubs comfortably.
2. Footwear
Golf shoes with spikes provide traction and grip to protect your form when swinging. Many courses require golf shoes, so be sure to check in advance if you don’t own a pair.
3. Balls & Tees
Low-compression, two-piece golf balls are best
for beginners. Consider buying secondhand golf balls, as you’re likely to lose a number of them as a novice. Golfers are also expected to bring their own tee to the course. For beginners, a large tee can be adjusted by pushing it into the ground until you figure out your preferred tee height.
4. Attire
Many golf courses have dress codes and require men to wear collared shirts. Tees and tanks are generally discouraged for both men and women, as are jeans and workout attire. Gloves are optional, but can help your grip and prevent blisters. If you are right-handed, wear the glove on your left hand, and vice versa. In addition, remember to bring a towel and plenty of water with you on the course. Other items to consider packing in your golf bag include sunscreen, band-aids, bug spray and a ball marker.

Taking a series of private or group lessons with a golf pro will help ensure you are able to play at a reasonable pace on the course, something your fellow golfers will appreciate. As a beginner, you may want to opt for a less crowded twilight tee time versus a busy weekend morning to avoid holding up traffic for other players.
Be Punctual
Arrive at the first tee 5 to 10 minutes before your scheduled tee time, and be ready to start on time. 8

Maintain the Course
At the first tee, check your scorecard to learn any local rules specific to that course, and mark your golf ball to avoid confusion. Introduce yourself when paired up with other golfers, and remove your glove when shaking hands before and after the game. Keep your voice down on the course, and observe cell phone etiquette.
Keep motorized golf carts on designated paths, and watch your speed. Keep both motorized and pull carts away from greens and teeing areas. Replace divots, rake bunkers and repair pitch marks as you play, and avoid stepping on other players’ putting lines.
Don’t Distract
Don’t talk when other players in your group are about to hit the ball, and try to stay out of their line of vision.
