COVID-19 Update 4-4-22 Today marks a great day for change from our COVID-19 pandemic. After a deep dive into our rules and regulations around the prevention of COVID-19 in our facility, we are able to make one significant change and a few minor changes! As we move forward, all our decisions will be based on the Community Transmission Rate map from CDC to determine when and if we can relax our COVID-19 hospital measures or if we must become more restrictive. Community Transmission Rate vs. COVID-19 Community Levels: within the link there are 2 very different reports. It is important to recognize that healthcare continues to be held to different standards than the general public based on the care we provide to the vulnerable populations. COVID-19 Community Levels. This report is for the general public. Community Transmission Rate. This report is for health care decision making as it relates to our rules and regulations with COVID-19 and Infection Control. https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#datatracker-home MASKING – EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY Per CDC Guidelines, employees that are Up to Date with the COVID-19 vaccine are now able to remove their masks in certain areas of the hospital if they so choose. Masks can be removed when in well-defined areas that are restricted from patient access (e.g., staff meeting rooms, kitchen, cubicles, conference rooms). Masks continue to be required in areas of the hospital where a patient could be encountered. (e.g., all public areas, hospital cafeteria, common halls/corridors). If a patient or visitor is encountered in a private location, masks are required. *Employees that meet the new criteria will receive a pink sticker to place on their badge. This will help everyone recognize those that may choose to remove their masks in specified locations. Employees that are NOT Up to Date with the COVID-19 vaccine must continue to always wear their mask unless they are alone in a private space or eating and drinking while maintaining 6 ft of distance. This change is based on Humboldt County’s low transmission rate. If our rates increase to substantial or high transmission, we will be required to return back to masking at all times for all individuals. Question: How do you know if you are up to date? The following link will guide you on what defines being up to date or not. As a reminder, employees are required to notify employee health (Kim Schipull) of any changes to their vaccine status including the booster dose. You will not be considered up to date unless Kim Schipull has copies of your vaccine card and dose(s) given. Please work directly with your leader and Kim to ensure we have your updated information. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/stay-up-to-date.html In general terms, up to date means:

An individual who has completed a primary series and received a booster is up to date. You are up to date immediately after getting the booster dose. An individual who has completed a primary series and is not yet eligible for a booster is up to date. An individual who has completed a primary series and is eligible for a booster, but has not received a booster, is not up to date.

In the event you do not follow our updated guidance based on your vaccine status, your action could result in disciplinary action. Your manager will be working directly with you on your status as we know today. *Employees who are at higher risk of severe disease, immunocompromised or who are more comfortable with masking, can continue to mask at all times. CDC UPDATED RECOMMENDATION OF 2ND BOOSTER (March 29, 2022) People over the age of 50 can now get an additional booster 4 months after their prior dose to increase their protection further. This is especially important for those 65 and older and those 50 and older with underlying medical conditions that increase their risk for severe disease from COVID-19 as they are the most likely to benefit from receiving an additional booster dose at this time. CDC, in collaboration with FDA and public health partners, will continue to evaluate the need for additional booster doses for all Americans. If you qualify for this additional booster, please reach out to Public Health to schedule your appointment. *At this time, the Up to Date definition does not include this additional booster dose. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Healthcare Personnel who enter the room of a patient with suspected or confirmed SARSCoV-2 infection should adhere to standard precautions and use a NIOSH-approved N95 or equivalent or higher-level respirator, gown, gloves, and eye protection (i.e., goggles or a face shield that covers the front and sides of the face). EYE PROTECTION Eye protection is not required for all patient care at this time due to Humboldt County’s low transmission rate. SCREENING All employees, visitors, vendors, students, contracted staff are required to screen at the beginning of every shift or upon entry into the hospital. The screening forms are required to be saved for 5 years. Visitors should not be allowed to visit if they have screened positive for the following: A positive COVID-19 test in the last 10 days. Fever or screening yes to any symptom of COVID-19. Close contact with someone with COVID-19 in the last 10 days. *Visitors should not visit, even they have met community criteria to discontinue isolation or quarantine. While in the hospital setting, visitors should follow the same criteria as we use for patients to discontinue isolation and quarantine. *Attached (Protect Yourself Symptoms and Visitor Information) are the new posters that will be placed around the hospital. If you have any old signs, please remove and replace with the attached. If you need a color copy printed, please reach out to Megan Vote. As a

reminder, we are required to communicate via signs/posters with our patients, visitors and vendors. Please take a moment to look around your areas for patient/visitor signs that might be outdated. If you have questions about any of them, please contact your leader or Mardi Engels. SYMPTOMATIC TESTING ANY EMPLOYEE with even mild symptoms of COVID-19, regardless of vaccination status, should receive a viral test as soon as possible. You are required to notify your manager AND Kim Schipull immediately following the onset of a symptom. There are very few reasons that an employee will not be tested if they exhibit a symptom. Employees SHOULD NOT be working with symptoms without having notified Kim Schipull or the manager and have received a negative COVID-19 molecular test. *All illnesses are required to be reported through Q-Statim. ASYMPTOMATIC TESTING OF THE UNVACCINATED During our low transmission rate, we are not required to test unvaccinated employees. EXPOSURE Employees that have been exposed to a positive case of COVID-19 without the proper PPE are required to notify their manager AND Kim Schipull immediately. Based upon the employee’s vaccine status and exposure risk, the employee may be required to test or be quarantined. STAFFING - CONVENTIONAL With our low transmission rate and zero staff currently out with COVID-19, we are no longer in contingency staffing. We are back to conventional staffing. The following link provides an image of what defines each category of staffing from conventional to contingency to crisis. This change will require employees that test positive for COVID-19 to remain off work for 7 to 10 days. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/images/hcp/Quarantine-isolation-bycontingency-in-HCP-v5-1600x900.jpg PATIENT PHYSICAL DISTANCING Without our ability to know if patients are up to date or not with their vaccines, waiting rooms, cafeterias, common areas should remain arranged so that patients can sit at least 6 feet apart when feasible. In a low transmission rate, spaces may be updated to reflect more seating if necessary. POTLUCKS – Homemade goodies Based on our current transmission rate and updated guidance from the CDC, potlucks and homemade goodies are allowable now. It is important that hand hygiene is performed multiple times while sharing utensils. BARRIERS The patient barriers placed to reduce the spread of COVID-19 can once again be removed. INFECTION CONTROL GUIDELINES FOR HOSPITALS Most of our requirements can be found at the following link. CMS, CDC, DIA and IDPH all

reference this document as our source for guidance. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/infection-control-recommendations.html REUSEABLE EQUIPMENT During state inspections of hospitals, the surveyors are paying close attention to infection control measures and practices. Multiple hospitals have been cited recently for not appropriately cleaning reusable equipment between patients. This includes but is not limited to, glucometers, gait belts, blood pressure cuffs, vitals machines, pulse oximeters, remote controls, call lights, walkers, wheelchairs, etc. Please take a moment to look around your areas to ensure everyone recognizes what equipment you have that is reusable and that your department has a process in place to ensure the cleaning is being performed. FEDERAL PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY Currently scheduled to end April 16, 2022. It is anticipated that this will be extended an additional 90 days. CURRENT CASE COUNTS 2,737 total positive cases of COVID-19 in Humboldt County. 1 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 10 days. 38 deaths (1 new one added)

PROTECT YOURSELF & OTHERS! Masks continue to be required while in the hospital/clinic setting. Make sure the mask covers your mouth and nose.

WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE THE COVID-19 VACCINATION FOR ALL QUALIFIED INDIVIDUALS. 4/1/22

CDC COVID-19 Booster Recommendations Last Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) updated its booster recommendations to allow certain immunocompromised individuals and people over the age of 50 who received an initial booster dose at least 4 months ago to be eligible for another mRNA booster to increase their protection against severe disease from COVID-19. The new guidance was announced after the FDA amended the emergency use authorization as follows: • A second booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine may be administered to individuals 50 years of age and older at least 4 months after you have received a first booster dose of any authorized COVID-19 vaccine. • A second booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine may be administered to individuals 12 years of age and older with certain kinds of immunocompromise at least 4 months after receipt of a first booster dose of any authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine. These are people who have undergone solid organ transplantation, or who are living with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise. • A second booster dose of the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine may be administered at least 4 months after the first booster dose of any authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine to individuals 18 years of age and older with the same certain kinds of immunocompromise. If you are unsure if you or a loved one is immunocompromised, learn more here: https://www.cdc.gov/.../vaccines/recommendations/immuno.html. According to CDC, boosters are safe, and people over the age of 50 can now get an additional booster 4 months after their prior dose to further increase their protection. This is especially important for people aged 65 and older and those 50 and older with underlying medical conditions that increase their risk for severe disease from COVID-19.

THERAPY April is a special month for the therapy department as it's time to celebrate Occupational Therapy Month!! We would like to thank all our OT staff for the wonderful care they provide and recognize all the work they do here at HCMH. OT helps patients develop, recover, improve, as well as maintain the skills needed for daily living and working. Occupational Therapy month was initiated in 1980 but the profession of occupational therapy itself started back in 1921. Here at HCMH we currently have 5 OTs and 1 OTA that make up our occupational therapy department. If you see any of these staff members, please take the time to wish them a happy OT month.

Tanya List has been an occupational therapist for 17 years and has been here at HCMH a total of 12 years. Tanya started working at HCMH as a contract therapist for 2 years and moved into the Director of Therapy role after that. She has enjoyed the leadership role she has here at HCMH. Tanya has 2 daughters, Sophia who is 12 and Harper who is 6. Fun fact is that she played softball at ICCC. Jenn Banwart has been an occupational therapist for 7 years and has worked here at HCMH for a little over 1 year. While working at Humboldt she has mostly worked in Home Health Care but has just started her journey into pelvic floor rehab with a focus on incontinence. Jenn her and her husband have 3 children, twins 3 years old Eddie and Ella and a 1-year-old James. Jon Naaf has been an occupational therapist for over 5 years and has been with us at HCMH throughout that time. He works primarily in the outpatient setting treating upper extremity conditions, but you can also find him working with inpatients as well. Jon has three girls under the age of 4 who keep him busy.

Katie Legvold has been an occupational therapist for 11 years and has worked here at HCMH for 8 years now. She is a certified Lymphedema therapist and has a goal to incorporate more wound care in the future. You can also find her at times treating inpatients and home health patients. Fun facts about Katie, she is a mom to 3 adorable kids, and was a high school prom queen. Jen Parrish has been an occupational therapist for 18 years and employed here at HCMH for a few months. Her passion is to work with pediatrics and has been working with pediatric patients for 15 years. She enjoys helping kids in our community and seeing them improve in their strength, coordination, fine motor skills, feeding skills, activities of daily living, and sensory concerns. When she is not working, she has 3 kids who find a way to keep her busy. Karla Rasmussen has been a certified occupational therapy assistant for over 11 years and has worked for HCMH for 9 years. Here at HCMH she works where she is needed (Long Term Care, Assisted/Independent Living, Outpatient, Home Health, Pediatrics) but you can most often find her working and treating on the Inpatient Care Floor. She has 2 furry kiddos Pelusa a 11-year-old Shiht-zu who rules the house, and Emerson a 3 1/2-year-old Olde English Bulldog. Fun fact about Karla she has a degree in relaxation therapy and has been to Belize 7 times to visit friends there.

During the month of February, the local Relay For Life committee hosted their annual American Cancer Society Daffodil fundraiser. Through generous donations, they were able to provide our residents 'Gifts of Hope'; hyacinths and daffodils were displayed throughout the hospital in Long Term Care, Springvale Independent Living, and Assisted Living! Thank you Amy Nostrom, committee member of the local Relay For Life and everyone that made this kind gesture a reality!

LTC THANK YOU to the Humboldt County Hospice Foundation for purchase and delivery of beautiful patio furniture for the LTC patio and Path of Life Garden. We are all waiting for warm sunny days to enjoy sitting outside! CONGRATULATIONS to Dani Glissman!! Sha has been accepted into a Nurse Practitioner program and will be starting classes in the fall. Keep up the good work! LTC is also pleased to have the Iowa Central Community College nursing students back under the instruction of Teresa Madsen through the month of April. Aubrie Brady-Rundall passed the CNA written/skills test and is now certified.
