“FLY-IN FOR COLLABORATION” -ASTRA FERRIS

As a leader within Webster County and Fort Dodge, I recently had the privilege of participating in a transformative experience: a community DC Fly-in trip to Capitol Hill during the week of April 8th. These trips are more than just journeys; they are powerful platforms for direct engagement, advocacy, and relationship-building with key decision-makers at the federal level.

At the heart of our DC Fly-in trip was the opportunity to advocate directly for our community’s interests and priorities. Meeting face-to-face with legislators allowed us to express our concerns, share personal stories, and provide insights into how proposed policies may impact our lives and communities. This direct interaction carried significant weight in shaping legislators’ perspectives and influencing their decision-making on important issues.

The presence of our community delegation in Washington, DC, sent a powerful message to legislators and policymakers about our level of engagement, collaboration, and investment in federallevel issues. Through meetings, briefings, and events, we engaged directly with decision-makers, advocating for policies that benefit our communities and raising visibility for our concerns and priorities. Along for the trip was:

Vickie Reeck, City of Fort Dodge

Dawn Larson, City of Fort Dodge

Nick Carlson, Webster County

Rhonda Chamber, Fort Dodge Regional Airport

Megan Secor, Fort Dodge City Council

Cameron Nelson, Fort Dodge City Council

Luke Hugghins, McClure Engineering Co

Dr. Jesse Ulrich, Iowa Central Community College

Jim Kersten, Iowa Central Community College

Wade Greiman, Snyder & Associates

Jim Oberhelman, Congressman Feenstra’s Office

Jerry Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald, Smith & Associates

Building strong relationships with legislators is essential for effective advocacy and representation. Our DC Fly-in trip provided a unique opportunity to establish personal connections with our elected representatives and their staff. These relationships laid the foundation for ongoing communication, collaboration, and cooperation on issues of mutual interest, making us trusted sources of information and insights for legislators.

Coordination and strategic alignment were key aspects of our successful DC Fly-in trip. Bringing together representatives from our own local government, organizations, and private businesses, ensured a coordinated approach to advocacy efforts. Aligning priorities and messaging amplified our collective voice and increased the impact of our advocacy efforts, enhancing the likelihood of achieving shared goals and objectives.

Ultimately, the goal of our community DC Fly-in trip was to drive policy impact and outcomes that benefit our community. Successful advocacy during the trip could lead to concrete legislative action, appropriations, or regulatory changes addressing our needs and concerns. By engaging directly with legislators and policymakers, we advocated for specific policy objectives, legislative priorities, and funding priorities advancing the interests of our communities.

In conclusion, our community DC Fly-in trip played a vital role in strengthening our community voice and advocacy at the federal level. By providing opportunities for direct engagement, relationshipbuilding, education, and strategic alignment, this trip empowered us to actively participate in the democratic process and shape decisions impacting our lives and communities. As we continue to advocate for change and progress, DC Fly-in trips remain a powerful tool for amplifying our voices and driving meaningful policy impact.”

WITH Q&A VISIT FORT DODGE

Visit Fort Dodge’s mission is to bring visitors to Fort Dodge by showcasing our community’s assets, which in turn brings more dollars into our local economy. We strive to create a positive image for the community, and we promote Fort Dodge as a destination. There are a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities, arts and cultural sites and events, venues for sporting events or meetings, and a vibrant local live music, food, and beverage scene.

What prompted your decision to produce an audiobook version of your publication?

We are always looking for ways to provide better services to our visitors by not only attracting them to the area but creating a unique experience as well.

Our audio guide came about because we had won the bid to host a conference that focused on families that have children with visual impairments. We were brainstorming how to add value to this group

WITH VISIT FORT DODGE

and to their experience and we thought if we could create an audio version of our main advertising publication, The Fort Dodge and Webster County Destination Guide, the families that were attending could have the option to listen to it. This worked in sync perfectly with our slogan, Dodge the Ordinary.

We received an Iowa Tourism Office grant to create the audio destination guide as well as a Spanish-translated guide. The printed and audio versions of the guide are now complete and are available on our website, DodgeTheOrdinary.com. Our next step is to put together a committee to work on content for the Spanish-translated guide.

What role does technology play in marketing and promotion efforts?

Technology is key to making our work more efficient and effective. It allows our small team to take projects from ideas to reality.

One tool we have is the Sports Tourism Index. It helps destinations evaluate their position in the sports tourism market as well as match them up with sporting events to potentially host. We added our indoor and outdoor sporting facilities to the index, which saves us a huge amount of research time and gives our Community Sales Manager, Tiffany Conrad, a chance to explore a wider range of sporting events.

The tool also analyzes the strengths of our community as a host destination and ranks our facilities. It compares us to competitor destinations with similar venues. Currently we have two venues with high ranked designations: Lakeside Municipal Golf Course received a Silver designation, and The Harlan & Hazel Rogers Sports Complex Diamonds received a Platinum designation (the highest level awarded).

Another time-saving tool we use is an online widget that monitors event listings from Facebook and Eventbrite to fill the events calendar on DodgeTheOrdinary.com. If you know of an event that would be of interest to visitors not already on our website, please contact us directly.

We use digital tools to help our Tourism and Communications Specialist, Geneva Dillon, organize and manage our social media projects, promotions, and communications. These include a digital content planner, Meta (Facebook and Instagram) scheduling and tracking tools, and Linktree (a landing page to hold multiple links which is customized and updated as needed). These technological resources assist us to be more active on social media.

Can you share any recent successful marketing campaigns or initiatives Visit Fort Dodge has implemented?

We are part of a cooperative advertising program with the Iowa Travel Industry Partners (iTIP). iTIP representatives attended the American Bus Association Conference, promoting Fort Dodge and other communities as tourism destinations. We saw great results; motorcoach planners from all over the country received the Fort Dodge itinerary profile. One planner scheduled 6 overnight motorcoach visits from the Chicago region and several other day trip groups have planned to come visit attractions like the Community Orchard, Soldier Creek Winery, the Fort Museum, the Blanden Memorial Art Museum, and more. These tours bring money into Fort Dodge, help build a positive view of our community, and spread appreciation of the unique experiences Fort Dodge offers.

Most of our marketing campaigns work with online content creators from across the Midwest. They assist and support us by creating unique content for social media and sharing the authentic experiences they have had in Fort Dodge with their niche audiences.

This support and validation from our content creator partners has increased our social media reach, website engagement, and regional awareness of Fort Dodge as a destination. Because of these promotional efforts, Fort Dodge and Webster County locations have even been included in 4 books: “100 Things to Do In Iowa Before You Die” and “Perfect Day Iowa” by Sara Broers, “Secret Iowa: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure” by Megan Bannister, and “Midwest State Park Adventures” by the Midwest Travel Writers Network.

Tell us a little bit about your background in dance as a child?

I started Dance & Gymnastics at the age of 3 at Hollingsworth School of Dance and Gymnastics under the direction of Sandy and Roger Hollingsworth. I did both dance and tumbling competitions from the age of 5-18. The main styles of dance I competed with were Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Clog, and Hip Hop. After High school Graduation, I danced with the Iowa Central Dance Team for two years where our focus was on the styles of Jazz, Pom, and Hip Hop.

What made you decide to make a career in dance and what has your training been?

Being a leader has always been one of my strongest attributes. Three people that really lit a spark in me to pursue a life of dance are my college dance and theater instructors: Lesa Dencklau, Cassidy Vermeer, and Teresa Jackson. They are each unique and have different attributes but the one thing that they all have in common is that they know what they want out of themselves and their performers, and they go get it. After college, Mindy Debaun approached me to start a dance program at United All Stars. Mindy has grown from my boss to someone I can go to for anything and everything. I am very thankful for everything she has helped me accomplished.

Emily Eastwood

Age: 32 • Hometown: Fort Dodge • Profession: Dance Instructor

What do you most enjoy about performing?

When I was younger, my favorite thing about being on the stage was displaying my hard work and sharing my passion for dance with the audience. Each routine showcases a different emotion and tells a different story. As a dance coach, the journey from the beginning of the season to the stage is one of my favorite things about my job. Every time I watch a dancer or team perform their routines on the stage, I am overwhelmed with so much pride because I know what it took to get to this point. I feel incredibly lucky to share these moments with them.

Who are some of your role models?

My parents, Kim and Todd Eastwood. They did everything they could to help me during my dancing career growing up and continue to support me as a dance coach. They are both hard workers, they always put their family first, and have taught me to never take life too seriously. I love you both so much!

What has been the biggest challenge working in a dance studio?

Learning that it is impossible to please everyone. Over the years, I have grown to understand that at the end of the day, if I know that I gave my students my best, then that is enough. Staying true to who I am as a person, a dancer, and as a coach is what I strive to achieve. In the competitive dance world, it is easy to get caught up in the placements so we are constantly working on reminding the dancers that there is so much more to life than a trophy.

If you could take a trip anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

What groups are you involved with in the community?

I have been teaching dance at United All Stars for 12 years and the Head Dance Coach at Fort Dodge Senior High for 8 years. In addition to coaching dance, I have been the choreographer for the Comedia Musical for 5 years, for Stage Door Productions for 3 years and I have been helping with the choreography for Iowa Central’s musicals since 2013.

What would you tell a parent who is thinking about signing their child up for dance lessons?

Overall, dance is a great activity for kids of all ages. It has many benefits that can help improve coordination and motor skills, boost self-confidence and self-esteem, and a fun way to socialize and make new friends. I still get to see my “dance friends” once a week when they come to our Adult Dance Class at United.

Paris, France to put my High School French classes to test… and to see the attractions, of course.

Growing Gowrie at GDC Banquet • Swieter Receives Go-Getter Award

It was a beautiful evening to gather at Mulligan’s at the Gowrie Development Commission Spring Banquet Wednesday night, March 27th with the theme Growing Gowrie. The evening began by announcing the winner of the distinguished Go-Getter Award presented to Mindy Swieter by previous award winner, Kevin Black.

The Go-Getter Award celebrates the leadership, inspiration, generosity and wisdom of a professional in the community. This person has been influential in leading the community participating in various City projects such as renovations at the Gowrie Swimming Pool and current trail committee. Volun-

teering at school and sporting events. She is faithfully involved at Prairie Lakes Church actively sharing many talents with church members. Mindy has been active with the GDC as a Board Member, executive, and committee member for over 15 years. This includes numerous projects and events such as coordinating vendors at the Gowrie Downtown Markets and Image committee. Employed at Security Savings Bank for 16 years, Mindy has been involved with the Iowa Bankers Association and participated in the Leadership in Advocacy Class. She currently serves as a Vice President and Compliance Of-

After enjoying a delicious buffet provided by Mulligan’s staff, Chelsey Worrel, GDC President, provided insight to the GDC’s vision of Growing Gowrie. “What needs to “grow” in our community? How do we grow and “water” or maintain what we have? Who will plant these “seeds” to grow?”

Worrel mentioned the GDC committees have been busy. Origin Homes will be starting construction on two new homes. These homes will be for sale but they also have the ability to design a custom home in the Wiley Addition. She showed an example of new way finding signs to be installed this spring to help guide visitors to the many amenities our community has to offer. Several events are being planned throughout the year. Worrel acknowledged the many volunteers and businesses that help Gowrie grow and introduced Kathy Streit as the new Executive Director who will be working behind the scenes in various ways.

Worrel introduced the speaker, Peg Raney of Jefferson, President of Why Not Us? She inspired those in attendance as she shared the story of how a group of local women investors created an LLC called Why Not Us? This group rescued a historic corner building in Jefferson after a water line break in the upper story did considerable damage to the building and marked the end of Angie’s Tea Garden. After renovating the exterior and lower level of the building they found a local graduate, Sara Ostrander, to open the now successful restaurant called The Centennial. The original group of 30 investors at $5,000 per unit has grown to 72 women. They are currently working to renovate the top level into two one-bedroom apartments. “The goal of the organization is to cash flow. There’s no free lunch for the members of Why Not Us? Rent from the restaurant and two apartments will help us take the next steps.”

A passionate volunteer in Jefferson, Raney spoke about groups working together for a cause. “It takes time.”

Fort Dodge Community Foundation and UNITED WAY

“LET’S KEEP THEIR WATER ON”

United Way of Greater Fort Dodge is working to address a community issue that is impacting many children living in poverty-stricken households. These children face many hurdles and must fight an uphill battle every day to overcome the challenges that poverty deals them. United Way’s top priority is to help these kids work through these hard situations and still reach their full potential.

The harsh reality in our community is that some of these children and their families are LIVING IN HOMES WITHOUT WATER. The Fort Dodge Water Department has informed us that over 300 households are currently behind on their water bills and will be up for disconnection in the next few weeks. Today, we estimate that 300 to 400 or more children in our community are living in homes that have no water or are at risk of having their water shut off at any time. Currently, we have been helping numerous families that have been living in their homes without water for one to three weeks or longer.

When homes have their water turned off, families really suffer. Without water, children go without drinking water, home cooked food, bathing, laundry, cleaning and the use of toilets in their homes. It is an unimaginable hardship. Many kids refuse to go to school because they haven’t bathed in some time and are embarrassed by their body odor or if their clothes smell.

No doubt, inflation has impacted all of us, but for families trying to reach middle class status, inflation has been devastating. For many families, paying their rent, food and utility bills has become extremely difficult. The families we try to help are single parent families with children, headed up by the mother trying to raise her family on one income. Usually, these moms are working service jobs making $10 to $13 an hour. Some are working two jobs, and putting forth every effort to make ends meet.

The goal of our “Let’s Keep Their Water On” initiative is to raise $25,000 to $30,000 to help families keep their water on in their homes. With extreme diligence and case by case assessments, our assistance can make a real difference in the lives of children.

United Way can only help these children and their families through the kind generosity of our community. We hope citizens will consider a thoughtful donation to the Let’s Keep Their Water On initiative. Every dollar donated will be used to help families keep their water on so their children can be clean and healthy.

To donate to the “Let’s Keep Their Water On” initiative, checks can be made payable to United Way of Greater Fort Dodge/ Let’s Keep Their Water On Fund. Checks can be mailed to United Way of Greater Fort Dodge, 24 North 9th Street, Suite B, Fort Dodge, Iowa 50501. Donors can also donate online by accessing our website at https:// unitedwayfd.org.

Every dollar donated to this initiative will be used to assist families who have fallen behind on their water bill and need a one-time “helping hand” to keep their water on or turn the water back on in their homes.

Artistic Interests:

I´m interested in drawing, painting, crafting, sculpting, and playing flute, and piano.

Age: 15 • Grade/School: 9th grade freshman at Fort Dodge Senior High Hometown: I was born in Waterloo and then I moved to Humboldt for my freshman year in high school.

How long have you been interested in art?

I have been interested in art all my life. I come from an artistic family, so I have grown up with skilled artists since I was born. My grandmother is a watercolor, oil, and acrylic artist and owns an art gallery in West Amana. My mother is an art teacher at Fort Dodge Senior High.

What do you most enjoy about creating art?

I enjoy creating art because it is a way I express my emotions and thoughts rather than crowding my overactive and busy mind. I also enjoy art because it comes in many forms from drawing to music, to cooking to writing.

What is the most difficult, or challenging, part for you when creating a new piece?

The most challenging part of creating a new peace is getting started, especially when it is a blank page it can be difficult to fill in the emptiness.

What is the most rewarding part of the artistic process?

The most rewarding part of the artistic process is reflecting on where you started. Whether it is when you got into art and how much you have progressed or the beginning of the project you have started.

Do you plan to use your artistic skills after high school?

If so, in what ways? I have always planned to use my artistic skills after high school either going to art school or any of the career I choose, art will be a part of my life it embodies me it´s how I communicate.

Who inspires you and why?

I’m inspired by Martin Luther King Jr because when I was in first grade I had to reenact the MLK famous I have a dream speech in front of my whole elementary school MLK taught me to stand up for what I believe in pushing me to want to be a self-advocate for myself and others.

DON’T LET INVESTMENTS TAKE A VACATION

Summertime is almost here — and for many people that means it’s time to hit the road. But even if you decide to take a vacation, you’ll want other areas of your life to keep working — especially your investments.

So, how can you prevent your investments, and your overall financial strategy, from going on “vacation”? Here are a few suggestions:

Check your progress. You want your investments to be working hard for you, so you’ll need to check on their performance periodically — but be careful about how you evaluate results. Don’t compare your portfolio’s results against those of a market index, such as the S&P 500, which tracks the stock performance of 500 large U.S. companies listed on American stock exchanges. This comparison may not be particularly valid because your own portfolio ideally should include a range of investments, including U.S. and foreign stocks, corporate and government bonds, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other securities. So, instead of checking your progress against a market index, use benchmarks meaningful to your individual situation, such as whether your portfolio is showing enough growth potential based on a compounding rate of return to

keep you moving toward a comfortable retirement and other long-term goals.

Invest with a purpose. When you work intensely at something, it’s usually because you have a definite result in mind. And this sense of purpose applies to investing, too. If you buy a stock here, and another one there, based on “hot” tips you might have seen on television or the internet, you may end up with a jumbled sort of portfolio that doesn’t really reflect your needs. Instead, try to follow a long-term investment strategy based on your financial goals, risk tolerance, asset accumulation needs, liquidity and time horizon, always with an eye toward where you want to go in life — how long you plan to work, what sort of retirement lifestyle you envision, and so on. Be strategic with your investments. Over the years, you will likely have a variety of competing financial goals — and you’ll want your investment portfolio working to help achieve all of them. That means, though, that you’ll likely need to match certain investments with specific goals. For example, when you contribute to an IRA and a 401(k) or similar plan, you’re putting away money for retirement. But if you

want to help your children go to college or receive some other type of post-secondary education or training, you might want to save in a 529 education savings plan, which allows tax-free withdrawals for qualified education expenses. Or, if you want to save for a short-term goal, such as a wedding or a long vacation, you might choose an investment that offers significant protection of principal, so the money will be available when you need it. Ultimately, this type of goals-based investing can help ensure your portfolio is always working on your behalf, in the way you intended.

When you take a vacation, you will hopefully be more relaxed and refreshed. But if you let your investments stop working as hard as they should, the results could be stressful. So, be diligent about your investment strategy, monitor it regularly and make those moves appropriate for your situation. By doing so, you can’t necessarily guarantee a long day at the beach, but you’ll have a good chance of enjoying a sunny outlook.
