2025 ANNUAL AWARD WINNERS

What does being an ambassador for the Greater Fort Dodge Growth Alliance mean to you?

Being an Alliance Ambassador is a volunteer role that is so important to our community Our ambassadors give of their time to represent the Growth Alliance and our community at various events throughout the Fort Dodge area. As an ambassador I always look forward to meeting the owners of new and existing businesses which helps me understand what role their business will play in our community. We as ambassadors help promote the organization’s mission and goals to our community Ribbon cuttings are an opportunity for us as ambassadors to support the new and existing businesses by telling others in our community about them and encourage them in their business

TERRY ALLERS

Can you share a memorable experience from a ribbon cutting or event that stood out to you?

Ribbon cuttings are an opportunity to celebrate milestones in existing businesses, new businesses, and openings of significant public buildings or events It is difficult to name a single ribbon cutting that stands out among the many important ones that I have attended However, three recent ones that do come to mind are the celebration of Bemrich Electric’s 40th anniversary, the dedication of the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge, and the public opening of the new Matt Cosgrove River’s Edge Discovery Center

What do you think makes Fort Dodge and Webster County a great place for businesses?

From my personal experience as a business owner, the team work and cooperation between the Growth Alliance, Webster County, the City have made it possible to have a thriving business for over 45 years

How has being involved with the Growth Alliance impacted you personally or professionally?

What inspired you to become an ambassador, and what do you enjoy most about the role?

Because I have been a small business owner for over 45 years, I understand how important it is to encourage and support new and existing businesses in our community They need to know that we are behind them and want them to succeed It is wonderful to have the opportunity to visit with them and learn what they do, including their plans for the future The whole experience is what I would describe as joyful due to the excitement of the business owners and the people attending The experience of being a Growth Alliance Ambassador is very positive and I recommend it to anyone who is considering getting involved as a volunteer who wants to make a difference in our community

What are you looking forward to in the coming year as an ambassador?

I am looking forward to continuing to work as a volunteer for the Growth Alliance and visiting many new business startups and, celebrating existing businesses in our community

As I mentioned, at ribbon cuttings I experience great joy in seeing new business startups, celebrating existing business milestones and meeting the owners of each business Professionally, it has been a great way for me to network with the other ambassadors and those who are attending the ribbon cuttings As a volunteer for the Growth Alliance I want to be involved in helping shape a positive future for our community.

JIM KERSTEN

What does receiving the Catalyst Award mean to you personally?

t is very humbling yet appreciated. I would like to share it with my family for all of their support and those I have been blessed to work with during my career

When you look back on everything you have been a part of, What do you feel has been the most impactful on the region?

There are so many, but serving in the Iowa Senate was an honor; being a part of the team that helped bring the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility to Ft Dodge; helping Iowa Central and our region receive state and federal funding The Fuel Lab, Dental Hygiene Clinic, Parking Ramp at Iowa Central, and working to get state and federal waivers during covid, are a few highlights All them were funded because of team and relationships at the state and federal level

Do you have any advice for future leaders or people who want to be more involved in the community?

II would make the effort to get involved locally, statewide and federally Take advantage of Leadership Fort Dodge and the Young Professionals groups Get to know current leaders who can mentor you. I was blessed at a young age to become friends of Terry Branstad who eventually served as Iowa’s longest serving Governor in the nation and Ambassador to China. When I worked for him we would drop him off at Terrace Hill at 9 or 10 o’clock at night, after a long day travelling the state, and he would say “We didn’t get much done today but we will give it Hell tomorrow”!

What do you love most about Fort Dodge and the Webster County community?

I think our schools and teachers are top notch, including Iowa Central. We have a great park and trail system and affordable quality of life We need to do more regarding mental health services and the homeless issue.

What advice would you give to individuals or businesses looking to make a lasting impact in our community?

Take the time to get involved, even run for office Remember collaboration and team work are key to success and our community is following that model very successful today Those in the arena will make a difference for a successful community I am also working with Mayor Bemrich, Congressman Feenstra and Nunn, on trying to find a new role for the facilities that had been used by the 133rd Air guard unit

What advice would you give to individuals or businesses looking to make a lasting impact in our community?

Ironically I will be taking early retirement this summer but will stay involved and expand my time with my consulting firm “Golden Dome Strategies, LLC helping folks with their state and federal issues and projects. I am also looking at some other opportunities as well. I see this as the next stage of my personal and professional life We have a lot more to accomplish.

KATE STUCKY

What does receiving the Emerging Leader Award mean to you, and how do you feel it reflects your work in the community?

Receiving the Emerging Leader Award signifies a powerful validation of my commitment to making a positive impact within the community, acknowledging the efforts I've made to contribute through leadership, even in the early stages of my career; it's an encouragement to continue actively engaging and fostering positive change, while also serving as a signal that my work is being noticed and appreciated by peers and community members

What advice would you give to other young professionals or aspiring leaders in our area?

Do something that makes you uncomfortable on a regular basis There is no growth in comfort, only complacency and stagnation You will never excel taking the easy route. Additionally, the only way to ever be comfortable in times of duress, to remain calm amidst chaos, is to constantly expose yourself to uncomfortable and chaotic situations You will be amazed at your growth and ability to eventually remain calm amidst chaos

What motivates you to stay involved and committed to making a difference?

The motivation to stay involved and committed to making a difference often stems from a deep personal desire to positively impact the lives of others, driven by values like empathy, compassion, a sense of responsibility, and the fulfillment that comes from seeing tangible results from one's efforts; witnessing the positive change one can create can be a powerful motivator to continue contributing

What’s next for you? Are there any future goals or projects you’re excited about?

Volunteering my time to support a cause that I am passionate about is something I will never regret It enriches your life, familiarizes you with the community, and connects you to people and ideas that will positively impact your perspective for the rest of your life Helping your community is an opportunity for you to grow as a person

Who has been a mentor or inspiration to you in your leadership journey?

When I look back, there are certainly people who have inspired me, made an impression, a mark that will last In moments of fragility, moments of transition, certain people have entered the scene and have said or have done something that has given hope and guidance

What do you see as the biggest opportunities for growth in the Fort Dodge and Webster County community?

The Fort Dodge and Webster County community has many opportunities for growth, including job opportunities, business growth, quality of life investments in outdoor recreation, and community partnerships

DAWN LARSON

What inspired you to start volunteering in our community?

Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give I’ve always believed that strong communities are built by people who care for and support one another. My parents were active volunteers when I was growing up, and they taught me that even small acts of kindness can have a huge impact I started volunteering because I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself to contribute to positive change and help those in need.

Can you share a memorable moment from your volunteer work that stands out to you?

Wow, there are so many! One moment that truly stands out was when I lived in Omaha, Nebraska My daughter and I volunteered at a home for early-stage Alzheimer's patients We would eat together, play games and listen to stories about their lives and families It was so rewarding to see the gratitude in their eyes and how much my daughter was enjoying these interactions It also reinforced the importance of teaching our children about volunteerism, which cultivates a sense of empathy and community responsibility

How do you balance volunteering with your personal and professional life?

It’s all about prioritization and time management. Before committing to a volunteer opportunity, I assess how much time I can realistically dedicate without compromising other areas. If I commit, I want to be invested, engaged and give my best When you love what you do, it never feels like an obligation

What do you think makes Fort Dodge and Webster County a special place to give back?

I often brag that one of our best assets is our people. I am so fortunate to engage with such positive, dedicated leaders within our community There’s a strong sense of unity and generosity here No matter the challenge, this community comes together to support one another. Whether it’s a fundraiser, an important community project, or just helping a neighbor, Fort Dodge and Webster County embody the true meaning of community spirit.

What organizations or causes are you most passionate about, and why?

I’m passionate about citizen diplomacy or people-topeople diplomacy. Ordinary people can make a difference It can build empathy, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to a better world when we realize we have much more commonality than differences. The City of Fort Dodge has a Sister City Partnership with Gjakova, Kosovo Through this partnership, our annual youth exchange immerses local youth in various cultures at an international camp They develop an intercultural understanding by experiencing diverse perspectives and ways of life, ultimately preparing them to be active and informed citizens in an increasingly interconnected world They all have returned with a heightened sense of awareness, tolerance and appreciation

I am also passionate about engaging our youth in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) This is crucial because it cultivates critical thinking, problem-solving skills, creativity and innovation. It prepares our youth for future careers in a rapidly evolving technological world It also develops essential life skills like collaboration and project management, making them well-rounded individuals capable of tackling real-world challenges. In essence, it builds a better future workforce I serve on our STEAMfest committee which coordinates an annual event for K – 6th graders to experience hands-on STEAM activities and learn about our local business.

Who has influenced or supported you the most in your volunteer journey?

So many people! My parents instilled the values of service in me and I had amazing mentors along the way who showed me how to lead with compassion When I first moved back Fort Dodge, my brother's volunteerism was certainly inspiring I still do not know how he managed to fit so much into each of his days! But the biggest inspiration comes from the people I serve every story of resilience or a kind smile is what keeps me going.

Construction: Q2 & Q3 2025

Budget: $2,000,000

(Local Option Sales Tax dollars)

The City of Fort Dodge Asphalt Street Repair Project has been an ongoing effort to maintain and improve the city’s roadways. Over the years, Fort Dodge has faced challenges with aging streets, potholes, and general wear and tear due to weather and traffic. To address these issues, the city developed a structured repair plan focused on resurfacing and patching asphalt streets to extend their lifespan and improve drivability. The project prioritizes streets each year based on their condition, traffic volume, and available funding. The process typically involves milling down damaged asphalt, patching problem areas, and applying a fresh layer of asphalt to create a smoother, longer-lasting surface. The city has worked to balance routine maintenance with larger-scale reconstruction projects. This project has played a key role in keeping Fort Dodge’s road network in good condition, reducing long-term repair costs, and improving transportation for residents and businesses.

Concrete Street Patching

Design Phase: Q1 2025

Construction: Q2 – Q4 2025

Budget: $500,000

(Local Option Sales Tax dollars)

The City of Fort Dodge Concrete Street Patching Project is an ongoing effort to maintain and extend the life of concrete streets throughout the city. Over time, concrete roads develop cracks, potholes, and joint deterioration due to weather, traffic, and aging infrastructure. To address these issues, the city established a structured patching program focused on repairing damaged sections rather than fully reconstructing streets, which helps maximize resources and extend pavement longevity.

City crews and contractors identify priority areas based on street conditions and available funding each year. The patching process involves removing deteriorated sections, preparing the base, and pouring new concrete to restore the surface. This approach allows the city to repair roads efficiently, improve drivability, and prevent further damage.

The project has been essential in maintaining Fort Dodge’s transportation network by addressing problem areas before they worsen, reducing long-term costs, and ensuring safer streets for residents and businesses.

Scheduled for Repair:

Gena Batcheller

Hometown: Fort Dodge

Profession: Business Owner

Give me one word that describes you?

Assiduous

Growing up, were you involved – or interested, in art & music? If so, in what ways?

Art, not so much growing up, that came later in life. Music, for sure. As a teenager, many of my friends were musicians, much of our teen years was centered around music in some fashion. I quickly became a self-proclaimed concert junkie, which may have started at my first show, age 13, front row at KISS concert.

Did you grow up in a household that appreciated the arts? If so, how?

No, unfortunately I did not. However, over the years it became more clear to me how much the music and art scenes overlap.

Tell us what made you want to start hosting live music at your bar.

For many years I supported and promoted shows at various locations in Fort Dodge. When the opportunity presented itself to have my own place, it was an easy decision. When did you host your first Jam Sessions, and how did that idea come into fruition?

I believe it was 2014 in The Rock Room at Patty’s Pub. It was a collaborative effort between myself, Jeremy Ober, Mark Gales and Gene Walker. We wanted to create an event for musicians to come together outside of their current bands, offer a place for musicians who aren’t in a band and showcase the enormous amount of talent in our area with our community. It was received so well, there was no way we wouldn’t bring it back when we came into the Eagles Hideout Lounge.

What is the best, and most rewarding part for you about the jam and live music?

Providing the opportunity for musicians, especially our youth to share the stage and learn from their elders is by far the most rewarding. Without our Jam Sessions many musicians would not ever have the opportunity to share the stage with some of their peers. Second would be the new bands that have formed from these nights and bands that have added members they met at our Jam Sessions.

What is the most challenging part when hosting these events?

Not having enough time to sit and enjoy the show with everyone else.

What areas of art and culture in Fort Dodge do you most enjoy?

I enjoy being a supporter and promoting the most, whether it be through our businesses or supporting other local businesses.

How has the live music scene in Fort Dodge varied over the years in your opinion?

Twelve or so years ago, live music had all but died in Fort Dodge. Now you can catch a show several nights of the week at multiple locations. We have so many talented artists in our community, it’s lovely that so many businesses are supporting them.

What would you tell a musician that is interested in attending the jam sessions, but maybe feels a little nervous or selfconscious about coming by to play?

First, show up and just watch, get a feel for the room, the music, the mechanics, and hang out with like-minded people. We have all skill levels at the Jam Sessions, from youth who are still taking lessons to some who’ve been performing for 50+ years. The seasoned musicians are so helpful, they’ll walk/talk you through the song. I promise, they won’t leave you hanging up there.

Do you have help putting the jam sessions together? If so, who do you have assist you and in what ways?

Yes, it’s not something I could ever do on my own. Jeremy Ober handles the musician side of it, Mark Gales handles the lights and sound, and friends and colleagues like Fort Dodge Fine Arts help us spread the word getting people in the door.

When will we get to hear you sing at a jam?

Ummmm...NEVER. Although I am waiting for the day my daughter, Lindy, finally does!

In what ways do you participate in the arts in Fort Dodge or at your school?

I participate in concert choir, show choir, chamber choir, musical, and voice lessons with Shelly Bottorff.

What do you most enjoy about music?

The thing I enjoy the most about music is how there are so many different types of music that you can sing, listen to, etc.

What have you learned from being involved in music?

I have learned many things from being involved in music but I think that the thing that I take away the most from it is how it can be so healing and how it can change so many people in so many different ways.

What are your plans after high school?

I plan on graduating high school with my AA degree from Iowa Central. This being said, I plan to go to college to major in Psychology and to minor in teaching.

Do you get nervous before you perform? If so, how do you handle it?

I used to get really nervous when I would perform and don’t get me wrong, I still do. Now I think that performing just seems more normal than when it used to, and I have more experience and so it’s less nerve wracking. I don’t really have a tip for handling my nerves. I just remember how hard I’ve worked to perform and how happy it makes the people around me.

If you could play any part in a musical, who would you play and why?

If I could play any part in a musical I would choose “High School Musical” and I would play Gabriella. The reason this would be my favorite person to play is because I love watching the movie and the soundtrack is really good. Another reason Gabriella would be my top pick is because she is super kind and she shows that throughout the musical.

My day usually starts out with show choir at seven AM and then I have a full day of school. After school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays I have musical and then I also have it later in the night, usually every night. If I’m not at musical I’m probably at a sporting event or softball practice. Then I come home, get my stuff ready for the next day and finally go to bed.

What other activities are you involved in?

Other than being involved in the arts I am involved in school softball, travel softball, student council, and respect for life.

Who do you look up to? And, why?

I look up to many of my family members, but if I had to choose one person it would be my Grandpa Denny. My Grandpa is a hard-worker, he’s funny, he’s nice to me and everyone else he’s around, and most importantly he is really into the faith. My Grandpa is always around and he always tells me “If you want to go do something and your parents won’t let you, call your Grandpa and he’ll come get you.” My favorite memory with my grandpa is when he would take me to show choir in the mornings before he would go over to church, which almost always meant that he was going to have a donut waiting for me in the car.

You’re on a deserted island, you can have 3 items with you. What do you choose to take and why?

If I could bring three things with me on a deserted island I would bring: snacks, my bed, and my phone. I would bring these things because I want to be able to communicate with my friends and family (my phone), I would want to be able to be comfortable and stay well rested (my bed), and I would want snacks because they’re an essential part of my life.

It might not be on your calendar, but America Saves Week is observed from April 7–11. Are you saving enough? If not, how can you save more?

If you don’t think you’re saving enough, you’re not alone. Just 22% of Americans are completely satisfied with the amount of money they’ve saved, according to a recent Yahoo Finance/Marist Poll survey. And the same survey showed that a third of households couldn’t cover one month’s worth of bills if they lost a job or other source of income.

What’s behind this savings gap? Several factors are involved, including the high cost of housing. But while you can’t control these external forces, you may be able to increase your savings by taking these steps:

Create a budget — and stick with it. Following a budget is not everyone’s idea of fun, but it can be of great use in managing your spending, which, in turn, can help you save more. You can find many free budgeting apps that allow you to track your spending and place it into categories. Once you know where your money is going, you may find it easier to cut back in certain areas, such as possibly eliminating streaming services you don’t use much.

Pay yourself first. Like everyone, you have a lot of bills to pay each month. But why not pay yourself first? Even if you can’t put away a lot of money, any amount will help. And you can make it easier on yourself by having some funds moved automatically each month from your checking or savings account into a liquid, low-risk account — one you don’t use for your everyday expenses. Over time, as

your income goes up, you can increase the amounts in these automatic transfers.

Take advantage of “cash-back” offers. You may already use a credit card that provides you with cash back on purchases. But did you know you can also download cashback apps? Like cash-back credit cards, these apps give you a percentage of your spending back, helping you save money on many of your regular purchases, such as groceries and gas. You can even find apps that offer promotions that let you earn more at specific times or for buying certain items.

Cut down — or consolidate — your debts. It’s easier said than done, but the more you can reduce your debts, the more money you’ll be able to save. You can choose to tackle the debt with the highest interest rate or get rid of the smallest debts first, but whichever method you choose, try to be as diligent as you can.

HOW CAN YOU BOOST YOUR SAVINGS?

You also might be able to consolidate your debts — but be careful, because not all debt consolidation offers will work in your favor.

Get some help. Your employer may provide an employee assistance program that offers, among other benefits, credit counseling and other types of financial guidance. You may want to contact a financial professional who can take a holistic look at your situation and offer recommendations on saving, investing and goal setting.

It’s always important to save money — but it’s not always easy. However, by exploring every avenue available to you, you may be able to improve your saving skills to the point where they can make a real difference in your life.

— we don’t even have to be here.”

The center features all needs under one roof — including large areas for chemicals, seed storage and a new 60-foot shop for maintaining and repairing company equipment.

“The agronomy complex has two load-out bays for liquid fertilizer, and one of them is a 24-hour bay, so all of our growers can access it anytime with their code so they can get water or fertilizer or whatever they need,” said Nissen. “They only need to punch in their order number (arranged ahead of time) and come in at any time

in and mixes it all for you,” said Nissen.

“People are catching onto it, and it’s so efficient,” he said. “We can fill a full tanker load (in and out) in 10 minutes because it’s all automation.”

Farmers can load liquid nitrogen, starter fertilizer, ammonium thiosulfate and more, along with any chemical, which can be premixed and ready to load onto tankers and brought to the field.

The complex renovation also added an additional UAN (32 percent liquid nitrogen) tank that holds 1.5 million gallons.

The seed area features five bulk bins for five bulk products,

The new campus also features a repack area, where farmers can bring in their mini-bulk and get it filled with any chemical they need. The new state-ofthe-art system measures chemicals by the pound instead of gallons; Nissen said that results in a more accurate measurement and is fast.

“With this facility we have 14 bulk product tanks and 10 other products on mini-bulk stands, so we have access to 24 bulk products at one time,” said Nissen. “Anything people use that we don’t have in bulk we

“With this system, recipes are made up on the work order, and then it’s pulled into the system. Once you click on that order, the system pulls everything

“Before, we only were able to store about a third of that — about half a million gallons,” said Nissen. “Now we can order more at a time and store it here, and pass along a better price to our growers.”

He said these improvements are enhancing the work of their producers.
