The Ash Tree
Emerald Ash Borer
Leaves are compound and composed of 5 to 11 leaves
What You Need to Know about Emerald Ash Borer Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive beetle from China. The larvae eats the soft wood under the bark preventing the tree from moving water and nutrients between roots and leaves. This in turn, kills the tree within 1 to 3 years. The Emerald Ash Borer has made its way to Central Iowa currently identified in 6 cities.
What you should do as a homeowner with ash trees in your yard? • To identify an ash tree look on line, call a nursery, or the Iowa State Extension office • Access the health of your ash tree(s) • If you have multiple ash trees, create a plan for removals especially if they are stressed or unhealthy • Diversify your tree selections • The city is not recommending any action on healthy ash trees at this time
Seeds on female tree are paddle shaped

New Open Shelters Available for Rent Open shelters have been added as amenities in three of Fort Dodge parks including Snell-Crawford, Phinney and Oleson Park. The shelters are available to any park visitors to use for free when they are not reserved. Signs posted on the shelters will list days that reservations are held. Reservations can be made at FD Parks and Recreation in City Hall or online at fortdodiowa.org/parks. We do NOT take reservations over the phone. Nonreserved shelters can be used on a first come, first served basis.
Forestry Department Proud Recipient of the Tree City Award for the past 33 years! Phone: 573-5791
Fort Dodge Parks & Recreation is proud to have a full-service Forestry Department under its auspices. City Forestry provides trimming and/or pruning of city right of way (parking trees), removing dead, dying, hazardous or diseased trees from the parking or other city property. They also grind out and remove stumps from the parking and city property and refill holes with black dirt and compost. Forestry provides other miscellaneous care of cracked and/or injured trees and they provide information in regard to insect/disease problems infecting trees.
Tree Memorial Program Snell Crawford, Phinney & Oleson open shelter rental is $25/day.
One of our most successful parks programs, the tree memorial is an outstanding and thoughtful way to remember a loved one. Call FD Parks & Recreation to receive more information or visit fortdodgeiowa.org to print off a copy of the Tree Memorial Order Form.
