Test Comments: Spring rainfall delayed planting of this plot until the first week of May, however, once in the ground the warm May temperatures favored quick emergence and excellent plant vigor. The first half of the growing season was nearly ideal. The regular showers became fewer and farther between from mid-July through the rest of the season. Dry conditions persisted as soils dried and the drought intensified to D2 severe level by the time the crop had reached black layer. From planting through maturity, Donald's field was a little over 8" below the 10-yr average. The dry weather appeared to prevent foliar diseases from having much effect as plants were healthy and stalk strength was excellent at harvest. Ears pollinated well and very little tipback was observed among the hybrids tested. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Test Comments: Tom's farm started off cool and dry. By July, the D2 severe drought had developed and remained over most of Ida county for the rest of the growing season. An intense storm on Aug 6-7 brought 4.6" in just a few hours. A lot of the water filled cracks, but not all of that moisture was able to soak in to relieve parched sub-soils. Accordingly, a fair amount of variability was observed within the trial area where differences in water holding capacity of the sub-soils showed up in this dry season. Yield inconsistencies appeared across replications of the full-season trial particularly. Dry weather affected ear size and some tip back was observed. Plant height ranged from short to tall but stalks stood well and ear shanks were strong. The fullseason test was rejected due to yield variability from drought stress. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Test Comments: Lots of variability in area fields this year due to the dry conditions. Wavy fields across the region were a good indication of soils that held water and those that couldn't. Some corn grew decent where there was water...other areas just stalled out and gave up. There just wasn't enough moisture through the season to allow this corn to take off. Pollination was impacted as evidenced by tipback ears. Even though this farm did receive some August and early September rains, the damage from the persistent drought had been done. As of mid-September, this farm remained in D3 extreme drought conditions and was 11" below the 10-year average for rainfall from planting through black-layer. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Test Comments: This corn-on-corn site started very similar to 2022 for the first part of the season through tassel, but with slightly better moisture at planting. Then it dried up like much of the rest of northern Iowa. The 2" of rain on June 25 was well received. It came with a little wind but the plots stood up fine. Overall seasonal rainfall was nearly 12 inches below the 10-yr average and yields suffered due to the drought stress in this area, especially on the light soils that don't hold water well. Another significant issue facing these hybrids was heavy rootworm pressure, which caused many hybrids to lodge...some severely. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Test Comments: This corn-on-corn plot on Bob's farm really took it in the chin this season. Dry weather made it difficult to move nitrogen and other nutrients into the crop. The effect was short ears overall, likely a result of limited NPK getting into the plants during key growth stages. Additionally, plants were particularly susceptible to lodging, and differences among hybrids were apparent. The dry weather also revealed wide soil variability deeper in the profile as drought conditions progressed through the season. Decent yields could be found in soils with good water-holding capacity, but corn in lighter ground suffered. Bob reported yields in other areas of his farms ranging from 50 bu/a in poor areas to 230 bu/a in the good areas. This farm ended 6.3" below the 10-yr average for rainfall. Test Comments: Spring weather was favorable for this corn crop, which developed nicely as regular showers provided just enough moisture from planting through mid-August to prevent stress. Nearly 2" of rain fell within days before pollination and ear formation was noticeably good at harvest with very little tipback. Even though Webster County progressed during the season from a moderate to severe drought, the dry weather kept disease pressure low and allowed corn to reach good yield potential. Corn dried down quickly in the last couple of weeks leading to harvest, but the stalks were strong and holding up well. Test Comments: Really wet...then really dry. Precipitation went from one extreme to the other at Dale's farm this season. This corn plot was planted in very good conditions on May 3. Then storms moved through from May 12-15 that dropped 6.5" of rain and completely saturated the soil profile. In soil types that were unable to drain well, the excessive water led to poor stands, and replanted fields in the Osage area were common. Then the faucet turned off for the rest of the growing season. June, July and August were very dry and each month experienced a 3.5" deficit of rainfall from normal. As expected, the D3 extreme drought conditions reduced yields. This farm ended 10.7" below the 10-yr average from planting through Sept 15. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Test Comments: The dry season in O'Brien County revealed big differences in soil types between farms and within fields. Dry sub-soil pockets showed themselves this year and the impact on plant vigor was very noticeable in plant height, ear size and stalk diameter. An unforeseen gradient of soil water holding capacity was present between the different tests and caused more variability than expected. Affected replications were removed due to yield inconsistencies caused by small pockets of stressed and barren plants. Like the rest of northern Iowa, corn yields in O'Brien County followed the roller coaster of erratic weather. Fields that experienced regular rainfall had near-record yields. On the other hand, fields that missed the pop-up showers were well short of average yield expectations. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Bio-Empruv

The Broad Spectrum Disease Prevention General information: BioEmpruv is a biological fermentation extract containing a host of different substances that accomplish numerous actions within a corn plant. BioEmpruv contains biologically derived extracts, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, natural growth regulators and simulators, antioxidants, amino acids and bases and more. It also contains natural phytoalexins to boost the corn plants’ immune system and to increase the resistance to disease and pathogens as well as to environmental stresses. BioEmpruv contains natural and biodegradable ingredients. No chemicals or residues. BioEmpruv will be your best line of defense against Goss’s Wilt and other bacterial leaf diseases. Curative & very systemic. Much wider application window. Developed by PhD biochemist Dr Awada, Logan, UT. Bio-Empruv * Commercially applied to spuds, sweet and field corn since 2014. It has increased corn yields from 10-90 Bu/A, depending on application timing and infection rate. Keeps plants green and filling until natural maturity (BL) is reached. Drydown with normal senescent plants let the healthy ears dry faster and earlier than corn and grain from a die down plant.

Foliar Application • Produces a systemic effect in the plant. For best result apply 8 oz at V6 to VS and 24 oz at V12 to V14 before the plants get too tall. Apply along with a high quality surfactant like Argosy at 1 qt/100 gals to prevent wash-off and prolong effect. 2.5 to 3 months activity. • Compatible with most pesticides and can be applied with other fertilizers, minerals, herbicides, insecticides or fungicides. Always refer to the other products’ labels for compatibility and do a jar test. Can be mixed with a fungicide, herbicide, mineral or insecticide if needed. BE acts against fungal & plus bacterial leaf diseases. Safe to humans • If applying thru a center pivot, set the gallonage per acre at .1” to prevent wash off. • Apply late season to an unhealthy corn crop for faster recovery. Can be applied through electric drive or other pivots set to apply .1 to .2” of water. It can also be applied aerially or with a ground rig. Thermographic imaging showed it stopped an infection within three days. Mix with 2 oz of Albion’s AA chelated Cu and Mn for Tar Spot. 2 years of trials in a heavy Tar Spot area near Monroe, Wis verified this. Completely safe to humans with a with a vanilla odor.

Test Comments: Most of Sioux County has remained in a moderate drought for the entire season, however, rainfall has been timely on this farm. With the exception of a large storm that dumped 6.5" on Aug 6, showers through the remainder of the season were small but just enough to allow the plants to form large ears and deep kernels. July was cool and dry which likely reduced foliar disease development during reproductive stages. Chris did not notice excessive pressure of any kind. Test Comments: For a couple weeks after planting, small showers came through regularly and set this farm up for excellent plant establishment. The moisture was welcome, however, it didn't last long. The month of May fell nearly 3" below the 10-yr average and by July 1, the deficit since planting was over 7" below the 10-yr average. Some needed rain came a few days before and during pollination but drought conditions persisted for the remainder of the season all the way through grain fill, preventing top-end yields. At harvest, this area remained in D3 extreme drought and the crop was nearly 12" below the 10-yr average from planting through black layer. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Test Comments: Regular rainfall from planting through pollination gave the corn on Jeff's farm a great start. May was warm and a few big rain events soaked in well to allow for good emergence and early vigor. Soil moisture at pollination was ideal as July was a bit cooler than usual. Ears at harvest were mostly 16-18 around and filled to the tip. A fungicide application protected top-end yields and consistency across the trial area was excellent. This was one of the rare garden spots in northern Iowa that seemed to have just the right amount of moisture to keep the crop going all year round. FIRST Testing Methodology and Procedures Our testing program compares corn and soybean seed product yield and agronomic performance in grower fields across 16 states: Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Wisconsin (Figure 1 & Figure 2). Testing regions have been established to provide similarity by geography and crop maturity. Seed products within a predefined maturity range (e.g., 106 to 116 RM corn or 0.7 to 1.5 maturity soybeans) are pooled into a single, all-season test or split into early- and full-season tests depending on entry volume. Products are planted at five or six corn test locations or four soybean locations within a region. Test locations are selected to represent the geographic diversity within a region. Ideal sites have uniform, well-drained soils where farmer hosts use standard production practices for the area. Typically, all tests at a location are conducted adjacent to each other to minimize yield variance between tests. Seed companies and/or seed distributors are invited to submit their most promising seed products within specified test maturity limits to desired test regions. They provide high-quality seed from commercial lots and fees to enter FIRST tests. The only exceptions are check products (CK after product names, i.e. A1234 CK), chosen by FIRST

Managers to bridge results between early- and full-season tests, and Grower Comparison products (GC after the product name), often provided by host farmers for their knowledge as test space permits. Products are replicated three times minimum per test and grouped in sub-blocks arranged in replication blocks from front to back and side to side. This provides more precision in yield measurement and flexibility should a disruptive event (i.e., standing water) require elimination of non-uniform test areas. FIRST Field Managers package, randomize, and plant seeds into host grower fields using slightly modified commercial planting equipment to facilitate mini strip research. Individual plots (a.k.a. mini-strips) contain four corn rows spaced 30-inches apart, 45 feet in length (Figure 3). Soybean is planted in four rows spaced 30-inches apart or seven 15-inch spaced rows. Soil insecticide is typically applied to corn at planting. Seeding rate is based on standard area practices. FIRST Managers measure yield from the center two corn rows or all soybean rows using customized commercial self-propelled combines. Grain from each plot is electronically weighed and moisture content measured. Soybean grain is sampled from one replicate per test for protein and oil content analysis.

Test Comments: A wet spring delayed planting here and soil moisture was nearly ideal at planting time. The plants emerged quickly. Dry conditions during flowering and pod development did take a toll on varieties at this site, however, a few well-timed showers early in August provided some temporary relief to the moderate drought that had formed. Seed size was all over the place on any given plant with August rain-filled pods with large seeds higher up the plant compared to smaller seeds found in pods set mid-to-lower on the main stem. From planting through Oct 1, this farm was 6.4" below the 10-yr average rainfall. Plants stood very straight at harvest and no lodging was noted. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Test Comments: This area experienced some wet weather during the first couple weeks of May which delayed soybean planting for many in O'Brien County. Once planted, emergence was quick and plant stands were excellent. Overall, the amount of moisture for the season through August was about as good as one could hope for. Just when it looked like the crop was going to start showing stress, a little rain would fall at just the right moment. Clint's field was still over 3" below the 10-yr average, but relative to many other parts of Iowa this part of NW Iowa faired well for precipitation. Plants at this farm typically grow very tall and lodging was significant among some varieties. White mold was also observed in this field and impacted some varieties more than others. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Test Comments: We were very glad to work with Evan and the local coop to host the soybean plot this season, while also providing a learning opportunity for the local high school FFA chapter about field research and the many different soybean varieties that farmers have to choose from. For the most part, this part of the state was dry all season long. From July all the way through harvest, most of Sioux County stayed in a moderate drought. This prevented foliar disease development and plants were healthy through vegetative and reproductive stages. With the exception of a single storm that brought 3.3" on Aug 6 & 7, the rain was very scarce during seed filling. In all from planting through Oct 1, this farm was 4.9" below the 10-yr average. Test Comments: Landon noted that as of July 5, the growing season was very similar to 2022. This farm started with slightly better moisture at planting, then dried up until the last couple weeks of June and into July. Beans in the area took a while to get going but looked pretty good as they were in full flower, R2 stage. It is worth noting the field placement of the FIRST plot was positioned on lighter ground and did not have the yield potential representative of the surrounding area. From planting through Oct 1, this farm was 11.6" below the 10-yr average for total rainfall. The severe drought conditions revealed unforeseen sub-soil variability within the field, causing variability in the yield data. The early-season test data was rejected due to drought-related variability. The full-season test had significant differences among the varieties, but elevated variation and results should be used with caution. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Test Comments: Dale reported 7.5" of rain during the second week of May before the FIRST plot was planted. Once soils dried up and planting resumed, the warmer soil temperatures allowed plants to emerge quickly with good early-season vigor. Several more small showers came with regularity through mid-July providing the plants with just enough moisture to prevent too much stress during flowering. Pod set was excellent. Then it turned quite dry. Not much rain fell from mid-Aug through September. From planting through Oct 1, the season ended nearly 7" below the 10-yr average. Some varieties were lodged at harvest more than others and the scores in this report reflect the severity of lodging. None were totally flat and, actually, even the more severely lodged varieties still fed into the combine reasonably well. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Test Comments: This area started with some very promising moisture during the spring. Some showers during the middle of May brought excessive rainfall that may not have completely soaked in. However, seedlings emerged well and resulted in good early-season plant vigor. About 4 weeks passed from mid-May through mid-June with just a few sprinkles here and there. Then 2.3" fell again June 25-26, and after a few more storms during early July, precipitation was back to near normal for the year. August and September were hot and dry and by the end of the season, this part of Kossuth county remained in severe drought. From planting through Oct 1, Bob's farm was 6.3" below the 10-yr average for rainfall. Test Comments: Rainfall on Jeff's farm was pretty regular from planting through mid-August. The plants flowered well and were protected with a fungicide and insecticide application. From mid-August through the remainder of the season, dry conditions returned as precipitation all but stopped except for a few showers during early September. Pod clusters formed close to the ground but harvested well. The farm ended up 4.7" of precipitation below the 10-yr average but yielded nearly 9 bu/a higher than the 10-yr average for this farm. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Some replanting in the area was necessary due to stand loss from seed sitting in cool and wet soils for too long. Test Comments: This soybean trial was planted on May 22nd, however, many farms in the county were planted a few days earlier. As Brent put it, May 19th was a bad day to plant soybeans, especially no-till. He observed many fields of replanted beans in the area this year due to poor emergence and stand counts. Rainfall from planting through mid-July was spread out nicely and allowed for very good early season vigor. After a few small showers from the first couple weeks of August conditions turned dry until the end of September. From planting until October 1, this farm ended 8.3" below the 10yr average. Plants stood well at harvest and very little lodging was observed. † See last page for abbreviation descriptions. Dark colored row identifies the check product found in early- and full-season tests. Test Comments: Black Hawk County experienced a very dry season which ended the growing season in a D3 extreme drought. Even with regular showers from June, July and August, they just weren't enough to keep up with the crop demands during critical growth stages. As a result, yield potential was reduced proportionately with available moisture in the soil profile. The dry conditions held off foliar diseases for the most part and plants appeared clean and healthy during the season.
