New John Deere 1 Series Round Balers are fast and efficient They also capture important bale data OLATHE, Kan. — John Deere’s new 1 Series Round Balers help farmers ensure optimal moisture levels and consistent bale weights are maintained in every field, in every windrow and with every bale. The 1 Series features innovative Bale Doc technology to document bale moisture and weight in near real time. That data can then flow into the John Deere Operations Center for post-harvest analysis. After analysis is completed, farmers can make informed decisions about nutrient management or use the data to help get the best prices possible for their bales, or to reduce fertilizer costs. “No matter what the size of your operation, John Deere offers a 1 Series Round Baler that delivers consistent, highquality round bales,” said Chase Milem, marketing manager for John Deere. “Operators can see in real time what the moisture levels are of the bales they are making, right from the cab. This is information farmers can use to decide if they need to stop baling for the day, or whether they should apply a preservative like John Deere GREEN-GARD.” John Deere 1 Series Round Balers also reduce operator fatigue thanks to integrated technology that automates gate cycle functions. Baler Automation automatically opens and closes the gate at the right time, eliminating repetitive tasks, reducing operator error and minimizing downtime, helping farmers get the most bales as quickly as possible. Regardless of the age of their tractor, Milem said there are many good reasons for farmers to upgrade to the 1 Series, considering Baler Automation compatibility. A new, standard 8-inch G5e display

provides operators with an easy-tolearn, consistent experience, giving them total visibility and control over baling operations. The 1 Series also features a new optional High-Capacity Pickup to help farmers finish baling more quickly compared to previous models. Internal testing showed the high-capacity pickup was able to pick up and feed crop with up to 33% increased capacity compared to previous models. “Customers said reliability, serviceability and productivity were three important factors for them when considering the purchase of a new round baler,” Milem said. “We took what farmers liked most
about our previous round balers and added new features to boost their baling capacity and new technology to better help farmers make informed agronomic decisions based on real-time data.” The John Deere 1 Series Round Baler lineup includes the 451E, 451M, 451R, 461M, 461R, 551M, 561M and 561R. The “E” model designates the baler is equipped with a regular pickup; the “M” denotes the baler is equipped with the MegaWide Plus pickup, and the “R” model shows the round baler is equipped with the High-Capacity or the High-Capacity and Precutting feeding system. Net-Lift Assist, Net Lighting and a
Preservative System are options available for the 1 Series. With Net-Lift Assist there is a 90% reduction in lifting effort as the connecting linkage attaches to the netwrap handles and the netwrap roll is moved into position. Net Lighting illuminates the netwrap and wrapping components, making it easy to reload the baler in lowlight conditions. The Preservative System for the 1 Series utilizes a tank, sensors, controller and distribution system to ensure the right amount of preservative is applied to each bale. To learn more about John Deere 1 Series Round Balers visit JohnDeere.com or contact your local John Deere dealer.

BASF unveils Poncho Votivo Precise seed treatment Offers combination protection from damaging nematodes and insects RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — Nematodes are the leading cause of soybean yield loss in the United States, costing growers an estimated $1.5 billion in yield annually. These microscopic organisms are present in most areas where soybeans are grown, and because they feed on the roots of the plant, the damage caused by nematodes is often invisible without any above-ground symptoms. With the release of Poncho Votivo Precise seed treatment, BASF Agricultural Solutions provides soybean growers with another way to defend their fields from multiple generations of nematodes, increasing early-season crop vigor and maximizing yield potential. Poncho Votivo Precise seed treatment creates a living biological barrier that grows with the root, preventing damage from a wide range of nematode species and encouraging plant growth. Enhanced root growth and biomass at key development stages is critical to increasing yield potential, and Poncho Votivo Precise seed treatment supports a strong start to the season. “Protection from nematodes is paramount to maximizing soybean growth and yield potential,” said Troy Bauer,
BASF Senior Field Technical Representative, Seed Treatments. “Poncho Votivo Precise seed treatment is unique in that it combines a biological and insecticide. The biological grows with the root system to protect the soybean from nematodes while the insecticide delivers immediate protection from key insect pests.” Poncho Votivo Precise seed treatment also supports earlyseason plant vigor by providing strong performance against a broad spectrum of damaging insects and pests — both above and below the ground. The insecticidal active ingredient delivers immediate efficacy from key early-season insects, including aphids, seed corn maggots, bean leaf beetle, white grubs and grape colaspis. BASF Agricultural Solutions continues to provide industryleading protection from nematodes for growers. The impact of Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) in soybeans can be exacerbated by nematode pressures, making it critical to manage SDS and nematodes with Poncho Votivo Precise or ILEVO® seed treatments depending on your field pressure. The headliner, the new Steiger 715 Quadtrac, is the company’s most powerful tractor ever with a 715 horsepower-rated, 778 peak horsepower engine. The Steiger 715 sets a new bar for performance, delivering more power to the ground in a nimble four-track design. Deere debuts new 4075R Compact Utility Tractor and MY2024 upgrades for 3R- and 4-Series models

Deere offers new 1725C stack-fold planter for cotton, peanut, corn and soybean farmers OLATHE, Kan. — John Deere is offering a new 1725C CCS 12-row/30 stack-fold planter along with four 1725C non-CCS planters that include 12row/30, 12-row 36/38, 12-row 38/40 or 16-row/30 configurations. Each 1725C planter features an enhanced John Deere designed frame with convertible hitch, giving farmers more compatibility options between various tractors fitted with a Cat 3 or 4N hitch. The latest 1725C planters come factory equipped with a full agronomic suite that includes ExactEmerge or MaxEmerge 5e row units, pneumatic row cleaners and closing wheels and individual-row hydraulic downforce. The agronomic suite helps improve seedto-soil contact, crop emergence and can increase the yield potential of the crop that’s planted. Farmers who want to apply liquid fertilizer in-furrow or off-set while planting can add the optional John Deere ExactRate fertilizer system to any 1725C planter. ExactRate provides up to 20% more accurate nutrient placement in a
turn compared to non-turn compensating systems. All 1725C planters include electric drives that provide individual row control versus groups of rows on hydraulicdrive planters, providing more accurate planting population control. Electricdrive planters also reduce maintenance requirements, as they do not have wear parts like chains and sprockets found in hydraulic-driven planters. The 1725C with CCS features a 55-bushel tank so farmers can plant more acres between refills and finish fields in less time. On non-CCS 1725C planters, customers can choose a hopper size that best fits their farm. Deere offers a 1.6-bushel hopper for MaxEmerge 5e row units and on Exact Emerge row units (except 30-in rows). A 2.7-bushel hopper is available for Exact Emerge row units, and a 3-bushel hopper is offered for the MaxEmerge 5e. To learn more about the complete lineup of 1725C planters, visit Deere. com or your local John Deere dealer.
CARY, N.C. — Offering premium power and versatility to its customers, John Deere debuts its 2024 modelyear upgrades on its lineup of 3Rand 4-Series compact utility tractors. In addition, John Deere unveils its latest 4-Series model, the 4075R Compact Utility Tractor, equipped to tackle jobs for customers in the commercial snow removal and largeproperty owner markets. Highlighting increased reliability and technology readiness, the updated 4R-, 4M- and 3R-Series machines feature a variety of improvements to help elevate tractor performance and operator experience, especially in heavy-duty work applications. “Our customers are always seeking solutions to help get the job done faster and with more ease. Building on operator comfort and convenience, the 4075R, along with the full lineup of MY24 4R cab machines, boasts an electrohydraulic (EH) rear hitch control, promoting simplified operation for precise control and repeatability during rear-implement applications.

New Holland Agriculture awarded 2023 Green Good Design Award LONDON — New Holland Agriculture, a global brand of CNH Industrial, was awarded a 2023 Green Good Design Award in May for its T7 Methane Power LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) prototype tractor. The awards are organized by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. This special GREEN edition of GOOD DESIGN highlights important work that spearheads fully sustainable design, from new international products and buildings to construction and planning projects. The new T7 prototype furthers New Holland’s leadership position in the quest for viable alternative fuels. This new LNG system provides four times the fuel storage of our T6 model, the world’s first commercialized compressed natural gas tractor, which more than doubles the autonomy and creates more value for our customers. New Holland partnered with Bennamann, a UK-based expert whose multi-patented approach converts fugitive methane to clean biofuel — helping support an energy independent and sustainable farm system. When the T7 prototype is integrated within this process, an operation’s overall carbon footprint can be “better than zero.” Blending style, function and sustainability, the prototype features an all-new exterior with remodeled hood and state-of-the-art lighting. Inside the cab, the operator will benefit from a range of improvements: a full-length skydome roof for enhanced visibility, the innovative SideWinder Ultra armrest for greater comfort, a larger IntelliView 12-inch touchscreen, and ergonomically shaped seats.

The Broad Spectrum Disease Prevention General information: BioEmpruv is a biological fermentation extract containing a host of different substances that accomplish numerous actions within a corn plant. BioEmpruv contains biologically derived extracts, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, natural growth regulators and simulators, antioxidants, amino acids and bases and more. It also contains natural phytoalexins to boost the corn plants’ immune system and to increase the resistance to disease and pathogens as well as to environmental stresses. BioEmpruv contains natural and biodegradable ingredients. No chemicals or residues. BioEmpruv will be your best line of defense against Goss’s Wilt and other bacterial leaf diseases. Curative & very systemic. Much wider application window. Developed by PhD biochemist Dr Awada, Logan, UT. Bio-Empruv * Commercially applied to spuds, sweet and field corn since 2014. It has increased corn yields from 10-90 Bu/A, depending on application timing and infection rate. Keeps plants green and filling until natural maturity (BL) is reached. Drydown with normal senescent plants let the healthy ears dry faster and earlier than corn and grain from a die down plant.
Foliar Application • Produces a systemic effect in the plant. For best result apply 8 oz at V6 to VS and 24 oz at V12 to V14 before the plants get too tall. Apply along with a high quality surfactant like Argosy at 1 qt/100 gals to prevent wash-off and prolong effect. 2.5 to 3 months activity. • Compatible with most pesticides and can be applied with other fertilizers, minerals, herbicides, insecticides or fungicides. Always refer to the other products’ labels for compatibility and do a jar test. Can be mixed with a fungicide, herbicide, mineral or insecticide if needed. BE acts against fungal & plus bacterial leaf diseases. Safe to humans • If applying thru a center pivot, set the gallonage per acre at .1” to prevent wash off. • Apply late season to an unhealthy corn crop for faster recovery. Can be applied through electric drive or other pivots set to apply .1 to .2” of water. It can also be applied aerially or with a ground rig. Thermographic imaging showed it stopped an infection within three days. Mix with 2 oz of Albion’s AA chelated Cu and Mn for Tar Spot. 2 years of trials in a heavy Tar Spot area near Monroe, Wis verified this. Completely safe to humans with a with a vanilla odor.

Case IH launches AFS Connect Puma Tractor, upgrades to existing models RACINE, Wis. — Long known for dependability and durability across a variety of operations, the Case IH Puma® series lineup now includes the AFS Connect Puma tractor, as well as an addition to the short wheelbase Puma series tractor lineup: the Puma 175. Existing Puma 185, 200, 220, 240 tractors — as well as the all-new high-horsepower Puma 260 — now come equipped with more power options, a revamped operator environment and AFS Connect technology for unparalleled data management, tracking and sharing across a range of machines. Meanwhile, the Puma 175 offers greater horsepower to efficiently complete a variety of tasks across tough applications. “The AFS Connect Puma takes what livestock and row crop growers have always loved about Puma tractors — their reliability, efficiency and multipurpose dependability — while increasing their power, comfort and data connectivity to help operators tackle farm tasks with ease,” said J.E. Cadle, Case IH mid-range tractor marketing manager. “Plus, with integrated AFS Connect technology, farm owners and operators can easily keep track of their fleet on the web or mobile devices, all while adding operating efficiencies like reducing gaps and overlaps in coverage.” Greater operator comfort and efficiency Case IH engineers took every effort to ensure the AFS Connect Puma series tractor offers the gold standard in cab comfortability. A larger cab, more operator head and leg room, and greater visibility all contribute to an improved in-cab experience. Other improvements include a larger entryway with redesigned steps for easier entry and exit. Models equipped with a CVXDrive continuously variable transmission can also adjust optional hydraulic cab suspension from the upgraded AFS Pro 1200 display for the ultimate smooth and quiet in-cab experience. Efficiency updates include a larger, 124-gallon fuel tank for longer runtimes between fill-ups, new rear hydraulic remote valves with pressure release levers, updated right-hand steps with an easy-open battery box, two integrated tool storage compartments, service and maintenance improvements, new lighting options and more. Multiple in-cab storage areas — as well as an
Iowa Falls
optional cooled storage box — have also been added and updated, allowing operators to bring more bottles, snacks and other supplies during long days in the cab. A laminated windshield with an optional 240-degree sweep front wiper improve visibility, and climate control upgrades make in-cab cooling faster and more efficient. Greater control, performance and durability The new AFS Connect Puma 260 tractor comes standard with a heavy-duty class 4.5 front axle and a heavy duty rear axle, increasing the GVW capacity to 31,950 pounds and allowing for larger diameter (group 48) rear tires to help carry larger implements and get more power to the ground. This increased capacity is optional on Puma 220 and 240 tractors equipped with a CVXDrive continuously variable transmission as well. Expanded AFS Connect capabilities With AFS Connect technology — which has been embedded directly into the cab of the AFS Connect Puma — operators can comfortably reach new levels of productivity and efficiency. Featuring three powerful incab system components, this technology offers greater equipment visualization and agronomic data analysis than ever before: The AFS Pro 1200 display features a large, 12.4-inch screen, additional camera feeds, easy Bluetooth pairing and remote display viewing capabilities that can be accessed at any time by a farm manager or trusted Case IH dealer. The AFS Vision Pro operating system remains familiar and easy to use, allowing operators to customize and configure tractor settings according to their specific preferences. This includes seven programmable run screens and split screen viewing to create a sophisticated environment that puts operators in control. The AFS Vector Pro receiver improves guidance and streamlines connection signals, ensuring the AFS Connect Puma performs efficiently and consistently. Taken together, these system components create a formidable suite of tools that enable producers to more easily track, share and visualize equipment data, allowing for easier farm management and capitalization

on previously unrealized efficiencies. And, with added remote display view, operators can rely on a trusted Case IH dealer to perform remote machine diagnostics in order to determine repair needs, suggest tactics and more. The all-new Puma 260 and 175 models The newest tractor to enter the Puma family, the Puma 260 redefines the meaning of a compact, highpower tractor. In addition to being fully equipped with AFS Connect for advanced data management and tracking, the Puma 260 features superior horsepower (260 hp, 300 peak) with axle, tire and transmission updates to support a rugged workhorse design. Cooling advancements ensure the Puma 260 consistently performs out in the field, while comfort improvements keep operators refreshed inside the cab. In addition to Puma series tractors equipped with AFS Connect, the short wheelbase Puma lineup is expanding to include the new Puma 175 tractor. A dependable, powerful tractor, the Puma 175 offers more horsepower (180 engine hp, 225 peak) and relies on an updated CVXDrive continuously variable transmission to grant extensive power while maintaining the excellent torque curve growers have come to expect. This new model includes the same quality-of-life improvements introduced previously with Model Year 2022 Puma series tractors: updated steps, an elastic hood closing rope, an enhanced armrest, a redesigned cab entry, upgraded interior space, new storage areas, a revised monitor bar and better air flow quality. “With two new models to expand the Puma series tractor lineup, we’re confident that these updates will be beneficial to operators across a wide range of operations,” said Cadle. “Between all-new AFS features, comfort upgrades and power improvements, the future of Puma series tractors — and those who operate them — is bright.” AFS Connect Puma 185, 200, 220, 240 and 260 tractors, as well as the new Puma 175 tractor, are now available. Case IH introduces AFS Furrow Command for Precision Disk air drills RACINE, Wis. — Case IH is proud to build on the legacy of AFS Soil Command and AFS Harvest Command with AFS Furrow Command downforce automation — designed to maximize producers’ yield potential. The Precision Disk
series air drill with AFS Furrow Command will help producers get the most out of every seed. AFS Furrow Command adds to the accuracy of our patented parallel-link rowunit by helping automate downforce setting and maintain consistent seed
depth regardless of terrain. New advanced technologies AFS Furrow Command downforce automation is designed to take the down-pressure setting of the Precision Disk Air drill to the next level.

This function automates downforce settings of airdrill row units, ensuring consistent seed placement depth in changing field conditions by varying the hydraulic pressure to maintain contact between the gauge wheel and the ground. Operators receive instant feedback from AFS Furrow Command, which simplifies adjustment of down pressure settings, right from the tractor seat. “When it comes to seeding, growers need to make every moment in the field count,” said Trent Nowosad, Case IH marketing manager for seeding equipment. “AFS Furrow Command will help operators set the correct row unit down pressure, so they are at the right depth in the field
at the right time. In-cab feedback, such as percent ground contact, downforce monitoring and mapping make AFS Furrow Command easy to set.” Simple, productive and versatile in all conditions AFS Furrow Command downforce automation technology offers a clear advantage over current down pressure systems by simplifying operation. The operator does not have to change settings for different conditions to achieve seed depth consistency. AFS Furrow Command adjusts the hydraulic pressure for each frame section independently for improved depth control. Feedback from
the system also allows operators to minimize the force required to maintain gauge wheel contact with the ground for reduced component wear. “AFS Furrow Command helps producers get the most potential out of every seed they put in the ground,” said Nowosad. “It ensures every seed is placed accurately no matter the conditions, be it hard ground or heavy residue. Downforce automation also makes achieving this accuracy much easier and helps reduce longterm wear on the ground engaging components, while ensuring the gauge wheel down pressure is always right.”

We rigorously evaluate and select products across multiple years and in multiple geographies, advancing only the top-performing products.” The 2023 class includes 44 new exclusive corn products and 36 new soybean varieties. Corn products that advanced include hybrids of the new Vorceed Enlist corn, Corteva’s next-generation trait to better manage corn rootworm (CRW). Among the soybean products are 20 exclusive Pioneer brand A-Series varieties with the Enlist E3 soybean trait. Creating corn products As the leader in innovative field-proven corn solutions, Pioneer delivers exclusive products that meet and exceed the toughest real-world standards to maximize yield potential and consistently deliver leading performance. Before coming to market, prospective new hybrids must prove effective during intense testing, including in-field challenges such as disease, pests and water-limiting growing conditions. The 2022 harvest yield data shows a preview of the success that Pioneer will continue to build on with its new products, with a focus on key challenges — including CRW, drought tolerance and key diseases such as tar spot pressure: n Industry-leading Pioneer brand Qrome products delivered an outstanding 8.7 bushel-per-acre yield advantage versus the competition. By delivering strong trait efficacy and CRW protection,
Qrome products outperformed competing SmartStax technology products. n Overall, the top 34 Pioneer platforms outpaced the competition with a 5.5 bushel-per-acre yield advantage over the last three years, showcasing the company's commitment to bring products that perform year after year. n Pioneer brand Optimum AQUAmax products delivered a strong performance in 2022. They averaged a 5.1 bushel-per-acre higher yield advantage then competitors over all growing environments. n In addition, Pioneer brand corn products posted a 5.9 bushel-per-acre yield advantage in areas with high tar spot pressure and beating other seed brands across all growing conditions in 2022. Building exclusive soybean varieties As America’s top-selling soybean brand for more than 20 years, Pioneer continues to solidify its leadership position by providing consistent soybean innovation. Pioneer is expanding its offering of Pioneer brand A-series Enlist E3 soybeans for 2023. From robust exclusive germplasm, these varieties include key defensive traits to fight soybean cyst nematode (SCN), sudden death syndrome (SDS), white mold, Phytophthora and other yieldrobbing diseases. Yield and agronomic traits combined with the Enlist E3 trait — which offers flexible and effective weed control with herbicide tolerance to 2,4D choline, glyphosate and glufosinate — deliver high-performing soybean varieties. Pioneer brand soybeans give farmers consistent performance year after year. 2022 harvest highlights include: n Pioneer brand A-series Enlist E3 soybeans produced a 3.0 bushels per acre yield advantage over Asgrow Xtendflex soybeans in 2022, posting wins in 71% of 2,462 comparisons. n When compared with overall Enlist E3 soybean competitive varieties, A-Series Enlist E3 soybeans delivered a 2.3 bushel per acre yield advantage in extensive 2022 on-farm trials, winning 67% of these trials nationwide. n Enlist E3 soybean varieties accounted for more than 45% of U.S. acres in 2022 as more farmers discovered the benefits of the Enlist weed control system plus A-Series soybean-exclusive genetics.

JUA Technologies International receives grant to develop solar-powered crop dehydrator WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — JUA Technologies International, an agriculture technology startup that manufactures solar-powered crop dehydrators, has received a two-year, $600,000 Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to further develop its technology. The goal of the Phase II project, titled Smart Multipurpose Solar Dehydration Device for Value Addition to Specialty Crops, is the successful proof of concept toward productdesign improvements and design for manufacture of JUA Technologies’ multipurpose solar dryer, called Dehymeleon. Klein Ileleji is co-founder and CEO/chief technology officer of JUA Technologies. He also is a professor of agricultural and biological engineering and an affiliate of environmental and ecological engineering at Purdue University. He said crop dehydration is one of the best ways to preserve the nutrients and extend the shelf life of food, but it has drawbacks. “It is an energy-intensive process with huge operating costs because food dehydrators are typically powered by gas, electricity or fuel oil,” Ileleji said. “The high operating cost limits the ability of small and midsize growers and processors in the U.S. to produce dehydrated foods. Small growers and processors are vital to the local foods and urban agriculture industry, which is currently a $1 billion and growing industry in the U.S. “In developing countries in the tropics, where postharvest losses of nutrient-rich horticultural produce can be as high as 50%, dehydrating foods hygienically using the abundance of solar energy available in these parts will not only help support nutrition security but also provide growers an opportunity to increase their income from value-added processing.”
for Food Processing and PostHarvest Handling,” Ileleji said. “It was a multi-institutional effort led by Purdue University to reduce postharvest loss, promote economic growth, improve nutrition and enhance food security in Feed the Future target countries. Ileleji disclosed his crop drying innovation to the Purdue Research Foundation Office of Technology Commercialization, which licensed it to JUA Technologies. The company is a client of the Purdue Foundry, an entrepreneurship and commercialization hub whose professionals help Purdue innovators create startups. KLEIN ILELEJI is co-founder and CEO/chief technology officer of JUA Technologies International and a professor of agricultural and biological engineering and an affiliate of environmental and ecological engineering at Purdue University. JUA Technologies has received a two-year, $600,000 Phase II Small Business Innovation Research grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Ileleji said dehydrating fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices, and medicinal plants still occurs using primitive, open, sundrying methods on mats or trays that degrade nutrients and reduce food quality. “While there are a lot of solar dryer designs available in the literature and online, none of them have been commercialized or utilized in large numbers,” Ileleji said. Ileleji said JUA Technologies’ proposed high-efficiency, smart, multipurpose solar dehydrator fits the USDA’s and National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s priorities in four ways. “It improves methods to process specialty crops to improve quality and nutritional value and provide healthy food options,” Ileleji said. “It enables
small and midsize growers to add value to their crops and increase their farm income. It provides those same growers with an affordable technology powered by renewable energy, which conserves energy and reduces operation cost. It also provides an energy-efficient technology to promote renewable energy use and support environmental sustainability.” The grant will cover four research and development goals: n Modeling and simulation to optimize the solar dehydrator’s performance. n Determining the behavior and performance of the desiccant and heat-recovery system under various drying loads. n Determining the field performance and validating the modeling effort for fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs in
Indiana and California. n Beta prototyping of the product for manufacture. Ileleji said the goals will be addressed by JUA Technologies and contracted manufacturing and product engineering design firms. In 2019, JUA Technologies received a $100,000 SBIR Phase I grant from the USDA and a $50,000 match from Elevate Ventures. In 2022, the U.S. Small Business Administration recognized Ileleji as the Indiana and the Great Lakes Regional Exporter of the Year for its portable solar dehydrator, Dehytray. “Both the Dehytray and Dehymeleon technologies spun out from a United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-supported effort called Feed the Future Innovation Lab

Rick Titus in His 49th Year of Selling and Installing More Efficient Fireplace Inserts & Vent Free Gas Logs! Rick Titus of Clarion started his business, called “The Country Store”, in 1975 and even though he has moved into town now, he has no intention of retiring any time soon. “I enjoy and love doing this,” said Titus. “I’ve covered every corner of the state because I’m an expert, and that is not meant as a boast. I don’t think anyone else in the state does exactly what I do.” What he does, is sell and install the Fuego Flame (brand name) fireplace insert, which he believes are the most efficient inserts on the market, for the money. However, it took him awhile to find out about that brand. “I was living in Littleton, Colorado, and came across a brochure for the Heatilator fireplaces, which were made at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa,” said Titus. “When we moved back here 3 years later, I decided I was going to call them and become a dealer.” Titus was soon displaying the units at county fairs and got some business. But then in checking back with his customers, to his amazement, he found out they were sending most of the heat up the chimney. “I then tried selling other brands of fireplaces like Preway, and Majestic and found they were no better. These were touted to be energy efficient, having fans and adjustable dampers, but they still were not burning like a wood stove, so I just kept looking. I was selling wood stoves, but not everyone wants a wood stove in their home. Then I found out about the Fuego Flame Fireplaces, which were as close to wood stove efficiency as you will find. This company made Zero Clearance fireplaces and also made four different sized inserts, so now I could offer my customers a super efficient fireplace, or install one of the inserts inside of their existing wood burning fireplace, no matter how large or small,” Titus said. But then it wasn’t long before he found a fireplace that has an unusual shape, like a two sided, or see-through, or arched opening, and these inserts would not fit. So he decided to just make the inserts from scratch to fit these unusual fireplaces. He even built an insert to fit a four sided fireplace for Bill Knapp In Des Moines. The Fuego Flame fireplace inserts can make any fireplace burn up to 70% efficient, and needs no electricity while keeping 99% of the heat in the home. It burns slow like a wood stove will, keeping the beauty of the fireplace’s overall appearance and fun of watching the fire. Once the insert is installed, the average
fireplace can heat 1,000 to 1,500 square feet of a well insulated home, while using 2/3 less wood, and protects the home from runaway fires. It can burn most of the night on just 3 or 4 hardwood logs, leaving you a nice bed of hot burning coals to ignite new logs come morning. “Some of my customers use the fireplace 24/7 all winter long, and rarely hear their furnace kick on. Thus they save a tremendous amount of fuel each month. These inserts literally pay for themselves by saving the customers fuel,” Titus says. The inserts are made using 12-guage steel, which Titus said transmits the heat quicker because it’s lighter. Cool air from the house enters underneath the insert, and is then circulated up the back of the fireplace with the heated air exiting out the top, all without the use of a fan. The temperature of the air coming off this insert varies from 200 to 1,000 degrees. Titus says, “You bake in your oven at 350, and you can feel that kind of heat coming out of the top of the fireplace’s heat opening. Most heat circulating fireplaces do not come close to putting out that kind of heat, for they send all their heat up the chimney. The Fuego Flame inserts are installed using an insulated ceiling, which prevents the stove heat from going up the fireplace’s chimney. The insert damper control is on the insert’s face plate, so you can close the doors and then close the damper. The inserts also burn with their damper 95% closed, thus making the wood burn nice and slow. The twin glass doors are made using ceramic glass, which will take 1,400 degrees temperature, so you never have to worry about breaking the glass with heat, and you get to enjoy watching the slow burning logs inside. These twin doors are easy to clean with very little effort. “Remember when you were a kid sitting around the campfire, or at a family reunion, how much fun it is to sit around the campfire! Well, you can have that same fun in your home with a real wood burning fire in your fireplace all winter long, and enjoy the romance of the flames; and everyone could use more romance, right! It is actually mesmerizing to watch the flames, and you don’t even have to say a word as you watch the fire. Now you can have the romantic comfort of a campfire and enjoy all that warmth in your home safely and efficiently,” said Titus. For those that can’t or don’t wish to burn wood, Titus offers super efficient gas logs as an option. He started selling those in 1991, and they offer the same nice flame effect, but without the work and
Photo by Les Houser, Wright County Monitor cleanup from real wood. “I’ve got people who bought a fireplace from me in the 70’s and 80’s that are now having me put gas logs in those same fireplaces,” said Titus. These gas logs are capable of heating up to 1,000 square feet of the average well insulated home, so if you have a power outage, these gas logs will keep you toasty warm, and keep the pipes from freezing in your home. Titus has covered a large area of the Midwest in his sales and installation travels. “I have built and installed units in fireplaces from Minneapolis to Kansas City and all over Iowa,” said Titus. “I’ve learned that if I go to a county fair, I get business from that area.” He also feels that word of mouth has been his best advertising, and that the personal attention he can offer gets the sales. “I do all the work myself,” said Titus. “I don’t even charge for estimates when I come into your home. I feel an in home visit is the only way I can know exactly what the customer needs.” Titus is also not afraid to tackle, or at least look at, any chimney problems including a cracked chimney. “I’ve fixed one of those many times for someone,” said Titus. “I installed a stainless steel liner inside the chimney and made it safe and efficient.” Titus explained that these inserts are not
like others that you can buy, and that it takes some time to install them. “This is not a quick fix job,” said Titus. I don’t just shove it into your existing fireplace, collect a check and leave. Most of the other inserts on the market make your fireplace look like it has a wood stove shoved into it, and they change the whole look of the fireplace by putting a big metal shroud around the insert. It takes me from six to eight hours to do this, but it will be done right and you’ll never need to do anything more with it.” Titus has even thought of people who like to cook food over a wood fire. “I’ve developed a barbecue grill that will fit inside there,” said Titus. “You can grill steaks or bake potatoes. It will work great for putting a dutch oven in the fireplace too.” Feel free to contact Rick at The Country Store for more information. You can call either 515-532-3881 or 515-293-2455, or visit his website at www.fire-placesatthecountrystore.com, or e-mail him at yahtitus@gmail.com. “We don’t know what the future holds for our electrical system in this country,” said Titus. “If someone wants to control us they could cut off the electricity, food supply, or disrupt our fuel. Everyone should have a way to heat their home without electricity.”
