4 OUR HOMETOWN | JUNE 2022

If you want one of the freshly made apple fritters Pete Lana makes at Pete’s Donuts in downtown Webster City, you have to get there early.

During a recent Thursday morning, they were all gone by about 7:45 a.m. “One day I took 16 out of the fryer,” Lana said. “Someone bought 12 of them. They were still warm.” He opens the door at 6 a.m. “This was actually one of our slowest days so far,” Lana said. Lana and his business partner, Rebecca Mines, opened up on April 7. They’re there on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. or “until we run out.” So what’s the secret to a great doughnut and a great apple fritter?

The mixer went for service, came back, still didn’t work and then went back again. It’s now back and running like a Swiss watch. To get by, Lana purchased the biggest mixer he could find, a model intended for heavy home use. “It served me really well,” he said. “It didn’t give out on me. Today is the first day for the big one.” The return of the big mixer has had another advantage.

“See how relaxed he is,” Mines said. “His “You have to like what you’re doing,” Lana mixer is back.” said. “You have to have the desire to make Lana has a long history with the tasty treat. a good doughnut. “I’ve had them before,” they said. Mines had other ideas. “That’s okay,” she said. “You can have another one.” Customers also have the option of leaving their change in a piggy bank that looks like a stack of colorful doughnuts. It’s not a tip jar. “It goes to the Lotus Community Project,” Mines said. “In Pete’s customer’s name, not ours.” Lana, isn’t sure where the business will be in a year, but he’s got a great sense of humor about it.

“I’m 79,” he said. “I hope I’m alive.” Of course, for whose watching their waistlines, Mines has some good news. “We take the calories out of everything,” she said.

“Wink, wink.”

Well tanned … and clean By HANS MADSEN 8 OUR HOMETOWN | JUNE 2022

For Deitz Card, who co-owns Cards Tan-N-Fold with her husband David Card, it’s pretty common to get asked about whether to bring the soap and dryer sheets along. No, customers can leave those items at home. “People ask me, can I do my laundry?” she said. “I tell them no; I do it for you.” She also gets a few questions about her inventory of cards. “People ask: Where are the cards?” she said smiling. “I tell them, ‘You’re looking at them.’” No, they don’t sell greeting cards. What they do offer their customers are tanning beds and a drop-off laundry service. How did two such unrelated services end up in the same storefront? Deitz said that the insurance rates for a business that’s exclusively tanning are quite high. When combined with another service, the rates are reduced. And it helps that, unlike many people, she enjoys doing laundry. “That’s how I came about the laundry,” she said. “I do like to do laundry, so why don’t we try that?”

The Cards opened their doors in 2012. David Card got it ready to go. “My husband built it for me in a matter of nine weeks,” she said. “We worked a lot.” In the tanning department, Card works with her customers to make sure they’re not overdoing it. She said a first-time tanning session might only be a short while. “We work with them to make sure they’re safe,” she said. “You don’t want to burn; that’s what’s bad for your skin.” Customers tan for a variety of reasons. It’s not just about keeping the summer tan. “People come in for the vitamin D and the feel of the sun,” she said. She said the tanning beds are much busier in the winter months, but the customers don’t disappear in the summer. Not everyone has time to tan in the sun. Her drop-off laundry service, which is billed by the pound, is used not only by several local businesses, but also a variety of other customers. “I get lots of elderly people and bachelors,” she said. “Sometimes, a mom will call and tell me they’re overwhelmed. I do it all for them; they’re so happy. They’ll even ask me if I can come home with them and put it away for them. I really enjoy it.” Getting through the CO-VID shutdowns was a challenge for the Cards that they had to meet. “For three months we had to close the tanning,” she said. “But nobody said I couldn’t do laundry.” 10 OUR HOMETOWN | JUNE 2022

Once they were allowed to reopen the tanning part of the business, the couple found little had changed. The sanitation now required had always been done anyway. “We did add a little to it,” she said. They’re proud of their business.

This is what we do. We’re proud of it. We built it from the ground up.

LET’S EAT

Our Hometown Recipe Corner

Cheese is the focus of classic comfort dish

Much like bacon, cheese makes many meals more flavorful. When cheese is the centerpiece of a dish, cheese lovers know it will be tasty and potentially even a little addictive. Such is the case with macaroni and cheese. Many people have a go-to mac and cheese recipe in their culinary repertoire that they pull out anytime they desire some cheesy goodness. For those looking for a new mac and cheese recipe, “Crusty Mac and Cheese” from “Virgil’s Barbecue Road Trip Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Press) by Neal Corman is comfort food at its finest. This version has a little spiciness for an added flavor kick.

The mixture should be barely simmering. Whisk periodically. Cook for 7 to 10 minutes.

SAVVY SENIOR by Jim Miller

Adaptive Clothing Takes the Stress Out of Dressing

Dear Savvy Senior, What kinds of clothing options are available to mobility challenged seniors who have a difficult time dressing?

Looking for Mom

18 OUR HOMETOWN | JUNE 2022

Dear Looking, The chore of dressing and undressing in traditional clothing can be difficult, time-consuming and even painful for millions of people with certain health and mobility problems. Fortunately, there’s a wide variety special clothing, known as “adaptive clothing,” that can help with most dressing challenges. Here’s what you should know.

What is Adaptive Clothing? Adaptive clothing is specially designed garments for people with mobility issues, disabilities and cognitive challenges who have a difficult time getting dressed. This type of clothing incorporates discreet design features to make dressing and undressing easier, while still having the outward appearance of typical clothing. Depending on your mom’s needs, here are some of the many different types of adaptive clothing options that could help. For self-dressing seniors who suffer from Parkinson’s or other disabilities that affect dexterity, there are pants, shirts, dresses and outerwear made with Velcro or magnetic closures instead of buttons and zippers, which are much easier to fasten and unfasten. But be aware that magnetic closures are not suitable for those who have pacemakers.

You can also find a large selection at online stores that specialize in adaptive clothing like Buck & Buck (buckandbuck.com) and Silverts (silverts.com). Both of these companies have been selling adaptive clothing for decades and offer a wide variety of garments to accommodate almost any need, condition or style, for independent selfdressers and for those who need help. Some other adaptive clothing sites you should visit include Joe & Bella (joeandbella.com), Ovidis (ovidis.com), and IZ Adaptive (izadaptive.com), which sells clothing primarily designed for wheelchair users. And, if your mom is in need of adaptive footwear, Velcro fastening shoes (instead of shoelaces) have long been a popular option and can be found in most local shoe stores. Some other new lines of adaptive shoes that may interest her include Kiziks (kizik.com) and Zeba (zebashoes.com), which make fashionable sneakers and comfortable walking shoes that just slip on, hands-free, along with Billy Footwear (billyfootwear.com) and Friendly Shoes (friendlyshoes.com), which makes uniquely designed zip-on shoes.

For those who are disabled or who have limited range of motion and need assistance dressing, there are adaptive pants with zippers or snaps on both sides of the pants that are easier to pull on. And a wide range of rear closure shirts, tops and dresses with Velcro or snap fasteners in the back for those who can’t raise their arms over their head. For wheelchair users there are higher back and elastic waistband pants that don’t slip down, as well as pants with fabric overlaps at the seat to allow for easier toileting access. For people with tactile sensitivity, there are garments you can purchase that have soft and stretchy fabrics without tags and are sewn with flat seams to help preventing chafing. And for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease there are one-piece jumpsuits that have a back-zipper access to prevent the wearer from disrobing inappropriately.

Where to Shop? Because each person’s dressing needs and style is so specific, finding appropriate adaptive clothing can be difficult. Recently, mainstream clothing stores like JCPenney (jcpenney.com), Target (target.com) and Tommy Hilfiger (usa.tommy.com) have started offering a line of adaptive clothing for adults that combines fashion and functionality, but their instore options are limited. To get a bigger selection, visit the store’s website and type in “adaptive clothing” in their search engine.
