Not CrittersJust
It’s a pretty common myth that almost every youth involved in 4-H has some sort of agriculturally-related animal project such as a bottle calf, sheep or chickens.
“A lot of that comes from what is seen in public at the Hamilton County Fair,” she said. “We have one of the best fairs in Iowa and the public sees all the animals. Only about 60 of the kids have animals compared to the 235 kids involved in
6 OUR HOMETOWN | SEPTEMBER 2022
There are plenty of 4-H clubs that youth can join. Just in Webster City, there are three. Part of Baumhover’s role is to match up the members with the right club.
She said that Hamilton County is also blessed to have the Hamilton County 4-H Foundation.
According to Brynna Baumhover, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach County youth coordinator for Hamilton County, that’s simply not the case.
Involvement in 4-H is a family tradition for many, and the organization has a rich history in the area. The famous four-leaf clover emblem was created in nearby Wright County and the building that it took place in, a one-room schoolhouse, is preserved on the grounds of the Heartland Museum in Clarion.
“You don’t have to have a parent that was involved,” Baumhover said. “It’s open to everybody. It’s about doing a project and learning about that content. You learn writing skills, get to set goals and we have a lot of adults to help and serve as mentors. It’s about finding things the kids are good at.”
4-H is open for youth in fourth through 12th grade. For children in kindergarten through third grade there’s the Clover Kids program.
In4-H.”fact,
for many of the 4-H members, they might not see an animal project themselves until they go to the fair.
“If they want to join, the best way is to contact me directly,” she said. “A part of my job is to find a club that fits them. Each club has its own niche. Some might be more involved with multiple project areas and might be more focused on community service or skill development. It’s a plus, in my book, if it’s fun. The kids will want to go. There’s something for everyone.”
“The Clover Kids meetings involve a lot of STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering and Math — related crafts and experiments,” she said. “We have a fantastic Clover Kids meeting once a month during the school year. During the summer, it gets busy and it’s the 4-H kids’ time to shine.”
“The meetings don’t focus on being on a farm or involvement with living on one. The meetings focus on developing leadership and communication skills, as well as civic engagement. In our world, that’s community service. We strive to leave our community better than we found it.”
Foundation pays for the members’ annual dues and is able to provide the Clover Kids with a free experience as well. The Foundation also offers an opportunity to have costs reimbursed for some things, such as project materials.
There are some core values that she hopes the 4-H kids take with them from the program.

“They raise money to cover a lot of the expenses for 4-H in Hamilton County,” she
“They learn what it means to be a leader,” she said. “How to be involved and how to give back to the community. Everything else they do falls into supporting those.”
“Last year we took 48 kids to Minneapolis overnight,” she said. “We’re working on a trip to the Omaha Zoo.”
The 4-H program also serves as an important part of the Extension and Outreach programs at Iowa State University. It’s part of its longstanding mission as a land grant university.
Like any other group, 4-H welcomes adults in the community to become active in the clubs. Baumhover said there are multiple ways to volunteer. For instance, community members can talk to clubs about their careers and their hobbies, mentor youth in specific project areas, or even help out by serving as judges during the fair.
Brynna Baumhover, the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach County Youth Coordinator for Hamiliton County, looks over some of the State Fair exhibits that are waiting to be picked up in her office.
There are also a number of annual trips, workshops and retreats for which the Foundation pays.
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach can be reached at 515-832-9597, as well as www.extension.iastate.edu/hamilton/4h
In this way, 4-H truly serves its communities.
“The purpose is to take the research done at the university and make it applicable to helping people,” she said. “Everything we do is research-based. It’s been tested, down to the way we have 4-H leaders take leadership training. Everything comes down to science.”

Amanda Ostrem, 17, of Stanhope, a member of the Clear Lake Sailors 4-H Club, takes a break with her horse “Fancy” at the Hamilton County Fair.
“As a kid, I was not in it,” she said. “I’ve always known what 4-H is. It’s a great program. In the last two to three years, I got more involved.”
“Photography,” she said. “I did well. In health, I found I want to do that as a career. I want to be a physical therapist. I also did well in horticulture.”
So after years of involvement, what does 4-H come down to for Carly Appel?
“We used some for our own club activity. We rented Fuller Hall for a day to swim and use the gym.”
The money raised is used by the club for a variety of things.
“Thevolunteers.kidsare usually the ones waiting on customers and taking the money,” Allison Appel said.
“My first project?” she said. “I know I did food and Thesewing.”younger Appel could check her record book. Each member keeps one to track their projects, ribbons, awards and to preserve some of their memories.
Collectively, the Cass Red Cardinal 4-H Club runs the concession stand on the fairgrounds each year during the Hamilton County Fair. It’s open from 8:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. each day of the fair. The kids work four-hour shifts. Most of the actual food prep is done by parent
Allison Appel, of Webster City, is one of the club leaders of the Cass Red Cardinals 4-H Club in Hamilton County.
SEPTEMBER 2022 | OUR HOMETOWN 9
Much of that is due to her daughter, Carly Appel, 17, a senior. She began her 4-H career in fourth grade.
“All the kids have a scrapbook of what they’ve done,” Allison Appel said. “Errr. It’s due now.”
“We do a civic project,” she said. “We donate back, we support the Angel Tree Project, we donate to 4-Hers for 4-H, which is a program that helps pay for programs and trips, and we donate to the food pantry.”
Individually, Carly Appel has several project areas that she’s not only enjoyed, but also excelled in.
They have used some of it for a little well-deserved fun.
“It falls under leadership, citizenship and communication,” she said. “It’s about being with a group of people and getting to try new things. It has so many different areas to it.”
She’s a late arrival to 4-H.
There are 45 members in the club, all from within the Webster City Community School District.
For her mom?
As a senior, Carly is eligible to become a candidate for Hamilton County Fair Queen at the 2023 Fair. She’s mulling it over but for now.
Still, if you are interested in becoming active in an organization, 4-H might be a good fit.
“We’re always looking for new members,” Allison Appel said. “I would tell any kid to join. I don’t think they’ll regret it.”
“She’s better and better at it. We’re teaching the kids citizenship and giving back.”

Dakota Oberender, 15, of Jewell, a member of the Lyon Kings 4-H Club, gets “Dude” ready for showing at the Hamilton County Fair.
“I like to think we have fun,” she said. “They’re here having fun with friends. There’s new opportunities. Anything you can think of can be a fair project.” Her time in the club has also left Carly Appel with many good “Allmemories.thetimes I went to 4-H camp. It was fun to be away from home. I enjoyed the State Youth Conference at Iowa State. You get to stay in the dorms; we had dances, we had workshops, you meet a ton of new people as Shewell.”said that her involvement has helped her in several areas.
“Probably not,” she said.
Allison Appel is also proud.
“Leadership for sure, that’s the biggest one.”
And a last.
Carly Appel, 17, a member of the Cass Red Cardinals 4-H Club, at left, along with her mom, Allison Appel, one of several adult leaders in the club, poses proudly with the sign at the club’s concession stand on the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. Before there was the Cass Red Cardinals, before girls and boys could be in the same club, there were the Cass Cardinals and the Cass Red Peppers.
The programs in 4-H encourage public speaking by urging 4-Hers to clearly explain their projects.
It was a first for me.
To this day, my cakes are from scratch. I do, however, still have that ribbon.
But what really sticks in my memory is my first year at the Hamilton County Fair when I won best in class for my chocolate cake. My mother, and if you knew her you can imagine this, started snickering when she saw the pink and green ribbon. You see, be ing a 4-H novice, we had taken a shortcut and used a cake mix. Horrors! Not only that, but it was not a major brand. Unfortu nately, Cleo Bosworth, my leader at that time, came upon us as we were giggling and my mother blurted out: “It’s a cake mix!”

The Peppers was a girls club.
Oh, those years. Not only did I learn how to sew a set-in sleeve and apply contact paper to almost everything, I learned to write and speak in public.
And I remember a new young 4-Her making Rice Krispie treats and a holy mess in the basement of Asbury Methodist Church back when we met there.
I remember one particularly hot afternoon in Cleo Bosworth’s kitchen when the task at hand was making yeast rolls from scratch. I was just an observer that time.

I just turned 65 and would like to learn more about the stronger flu shots I see advertised for older adults. What can you tell me about them and how are they covered by Medicare?

SAVVY SENIOR by Jim Miller
Pneumonia Vaccines
The CDC recently updated their recommendations for the pneumococcal vaccine and now recommend that everyone 65 and older who has not previously received any pneumococcal vaccine should get either PCV20 (Prevnar 20) or PCV15 (Vaxneuvance). If PCV15 is used, this should be followed by a dose of PPSV23 (Pneumovax23) at least one year later.
FluBlok Quadrivalent: For older adults that are allergic to eggs, FluBlok, which is a recombinant vaccine that does not use chicken eggs in their manufacturing process is
Another important vaccination the CDC recommends to seniors, especially this time of year, are the pneumococcal vaccines for pneumonia. Around 1.5 million Americans visit medical emergency departments each year because of pneumonia, and about 50,000 people die from it.
Or, if you’ve previously received a PPSV23 shot, you should get one dose of PCV15 or PCV20 at least one year later.
Approved for U.S. use in 2009, the Fluzone High-Dose is a high-potency vaccine that contains four times the amount of antigen as a regular flu shot does, which creates a stronger immune response for better protection. According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, this vaccine was proven 24 percent more effective than the regular dose shot at preventing flu in seniors.
You also need to be aware that both the Fluzone High-Dose and Fluad vaccines can cause more of the mild side effects that can occur with a standard-dose flu shot, like pain or tenderness where you got the shot, muscle aches, headache or fatigue. And neither vaccine is recommended for seniors who are allergic to chicken eggs, or those who have had a severe reaction to a flu vaccine in the past.
Also note that the CDC does not recommend one vaccination over the other.
Medicare Part B also covers two different pneumococcal shots – the first shot at any time and a different, second shot if it’s given at least one year after the first shot.
COVID Booster
Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.
All of these vaccines are covered 100 percent by Medicare Part B as long as your doctor, health clinic or pharmacy agrees not to charge you more than Medicare pays.

your best option. This vaccine is proven to be 30 percent more effective than a standard-dose influenza vaccine in preventing flu in people age 50 and older.
Dear Novice,
If you haven’t already done so, you should also get a COVID19 booster shot this fall. Both Moderna and Pfizer have developed bivalent booster vaccines that add an Omicron BA.4/5 component to the old formula, which provides better protection.

There are actually three different types of senior-specific flu shots (you only need one) that the CDC is now recommending to people age 65 and older. These FDAapproved annual vaccines are designed to offer extra protection beyond what a standard flu shot provides, which is important for older adults who have weaker immune defenses and have a greater risk of developing dangerous flu complications. Here’s more information on these three vaccines.
Fluzone High-Dose Quadrivalent:
Fluad Quadrivalent: First available in the U.S. in 2016, this adjuvanted vaccine contains an added ingredient called adjuvant MF59 that also helps create a stronger immune response. In a 2013 observational study, Fluad was found 51 percent more effective in preventing flu-related hospitalizations for older patients than a standard flu shot.
