READY FOR THE CHALLENGE:

Andy Brim looks to carry on the strong tradition developed by Bob Howard at Webster City this fall.

Brim, a long-time Lynx assistant and former player himself, takes the reins of the program from Howard, who retired after leading WCHS to another playoff bid and an eight-win season.

TRANSITION OF POWER:

The Webster City volleyball team graduated a strong senior class, but the cupboard is far from bare at the nets for the Lynx.

With six seniors gone, six new seniors will get back to work along with a strong junior class and a handful of underclassmen.

“We graduated quite a few seniors,” said Webster City head coach Jess Howard, who enters her 18th season at the helm. “They will be hard to replace and were good role models, sending it down the line.”

Seniors Cloe Savitski, Olivia Gallentine, Marissa Hedeen, Adysen Poppen, Addilyn Orton and Breanna Bahrenfuss will help lead the Lynx.

“We have six seniors back — five with a

Loss of productive senior class isn’t slowing the Lynx down at the nets this season

lot of playing time,” Howard said. “We also have six juniors with varsity experience and three sophomores ready for the varsity level that have a good sense of the game.”

Savitski enters her fourth season at the varsity level and was a key player from the back row. Savitski led Webster City with 340 digs in 2023.

“Cloe is a solid back row player with a strong platform and good base with good

instincts,” Howard said. “She has done a great job in the back row for three years.” Gallentine led the Lynx with 197 kills in 2023, while Hedeen had 145. Orton added 66. Orton tallied 48 blocks, Gallentine had 35 and Hedeen checked in with 29. Poppen led Webster City with 66 blocks and was the team leader with 47 assists.

A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE:

Veteran leadership is expected to anchor the Webster City cross country program this fall.

Head coach Derek Turner enters his fifth season leading the Lynx, with nine of the Top-10 girls and five of the Top-7 boys back in the fold. Add in seven newcomers,

and the glass is definitely more than half full as the year gets under way.

“Our strengths this year will be experience, as well as our newcomers,” Turner said. “Although that sounds like a contradictory statement, we have a ton of kids that have competed at the varsity level for several years back.

“With the addition of the newcomers, we should also have a competitive team in

Lynx counting on veteran harriers to go the extra mile this season

regards to vying for varsity spots, which is always beneficial. I’m excited to see how things come together.”

Leading the pack is junior Justin Callahan, who was the bronze medalist at the North Central Conference race in 2023. Fellow junior Jack Barner also returns after cracking the Top-20, along with junior Kyzer Zinnel, senior Owen Patterson and sophomore Leland Eggers.

Isabel Grossoehme earned a 12th place finish at the NCC meet last fall as a freshman, while seniors Karina Murray, Lydia VanDeer and Sydney Oswald are also back.

“It’s great having all of those runners back,” Turner said. “And the newcomers will be looking to fill the gaps with several of them capable of joining the varsity squad

and having an immediate impact.

“We have had good moments in the past years but the main thing we have lacked is depth. It takes five runners to score well in meets. In the past, we haven’t had the depth to do that consistently. I think especially on the boys side we have a

good chance of scoring more consistently as a group rather than relying on one or two runners.”

With a wide range of runners from various grades, Turner has been impressed with how well the team has come together as one in the early going.

“Our girls team has been together for years, which helps when it comes to chemistry,” he said. “They challenge one another and work together to improve. On our boys side, our group of juniors and lone senior do a great job leading our young guys in the right direction.

“So far it has been awesome to see them working together in practice and I expect the same positive outcomes when we begin competing in meets.”

Webster City will host its own invitational on Sept. 3, with the NCC meet scheduled for Maynes Grove in Hampton on Oct. 15.

CARRYING ON THE TRADITION:

In his first two seasons leading the South Hamilton football program, Paul Skartvedt has orchestrated one of the best stretches in Hawk history. Back-to-back 8-2 campaigns have positioned South Hamilton as perennial contenders in Class 1A, and with

several key pieces back this fall, another run to the playoffs is the plan.

Skartvedt, who played for Jim Walden and Dan McCarney at Iowa State University, has continued the strong tradition of putting together an elite ground attack on offense with a defense that is equally tough against the run.

“We want to be at the top of the districts and make it into the playoffs again this year,” Skartvedt said. “We also

Hawks have built a formula for success on the gridiron

want to work on playing for each other and being great teammates and leaders not only on the field but also all around the school building.”

Senior Nick Severseike rushed for 1,137 yards and 20 touchdowns last year, averaging an eye-popping 11 yards per carry. As a team, the Hawks had 3,830 yards and 54

A STRONG FOUNDATION:

The 2024 volleyball season at South Hamilton will have a new look to it after the graduation of three key seniors who played all 32 matches last fall.

But the cupboard is far from bare, with the return of key starters Claire Hewitt, Sara Scheller and Tessa Skartvedt for head

coach Shannon Skartvedt.

“We are a young group, but I am already seeing great things in terms of teamwork, attitude and leadership,” Skartvedt said.

“We have several strong hitters and blockers in Sara, Claire, Tessa and Daytona (Ferrie), which will make that area of the game a strength for us.”

Hewitt recorded 61 kills with 41 digs and 17 blocks as a junior, while Scheller — a

Inexperienced Hawks ready to prove themselves under Skartvedt’s leadership

junior this fall — had 69 kills and led the Hawks with 46 blocks. Skartvedt finished her freshman campaign with a team-leading 113 kills to go along with 38 digs, 36 aces, 31 blocks and 28 assists.

Ferrie, Lily Ammerman, Riah Van De Pol and Abby Richardson all saw the floor as underclassmen, with Ferrie recording 12 aces in just 13 sets played.

“We would like to have a winning

season,” Skartvedt said. “That is one of our goals.

“We notoriously have struggled with serve receive, so that will be a focus of improvement this year.”

South Hamilton has 10 seasons with at least 12 wins since 2013, including three straight 20-plus win campaigns from 201618. They have won 25 matches over the last two years, and 37 over the last three.

FAMILIAR FACES EVERYWHERE:

Darrell Paulsen will make a return to the role of head coach for the South Hamilton girls cross country team this fall.

Paulsen, who previously directed the Hawks for a decade, steps in for Emily Bochmann, who is on maternity leave.

Nine returning runners from a year ago will help make the transition smooth, including key varsity athletes Cici Herrick, Olivia Beaune, McKenna Miller, Brooklyn Doolittle, Isabel Swenson and Kayley Zanker. South

Hamilton also added Rosemary Chamness, a Top-40 finisher at the North Central Conference meet for Webster City last fall.

Bianca Seaton, Vivian Swenson and Laural Johnson are also back.

“I think our experience will be our biggest strength,” Paulsen said. “The girls have been running really hard in camp and practice so far.

“We just need to work on our mental and physical part of the race. They just need to know that they can do it and continue to improve throughout the season.”

Herrick capped off her freshman

campaign by finishing 15th at a Class 1A district meet last year, while Beaune was 32nd as a sophomore. Miller, a senior, and Doolittle, a junior, both cracked the Top-40.

At the Heart of Iowa Conference meet, Herrick finished ninth, Miller 11th and Doolittle 15th for the Hawks.

The South Hamilton boys have a small squad, but return mostly their entire lineup.

“We have a much smaller team this year than we’ve had in the last several years, but almost all are returning runners,” said South Hamilton head coach Nathan Ferrie. “With seven high school runners this year, five of

Hawks relying on plenty of veteran leadership

them ran high school last year and four of our seven are now seniors.”

Hayden Hill, Laken Zanker, Jagger Ferrie and Trace Junker are all varsity runners back for the South Hamilton boys.

“Laken Zanker and Hayden Hill are both showing early that they are serious runners, but I have high hopes that a couple of others step up big and attempt to take those top spots,” Ferrie said. “Really the entire team showed up this year wanting to be pushed past comfort and to improve from where

“Marissa is strong from the outside with power and smart with placement,” Howard said. “Addilyn is very sound in the middle and good defensively. Olivia is a strong hitter and can hit from all places.

“Unfortunately we will be without Adysen, who would be returning in the middle. She tore her ACL for the second time, which is a really tough break for her and for us. Breanna will also be fighting for a position.”

Defensively the Lynx will look for juniors Hailey Brim, Alivia Burns and Morgan Hackbarth to step and play key roles.

Howard said junior Ellie Peterson, along with classmate Marissa Miller and

Ashlee Nydegger, are in the mix.

“Hailey, Alivia and Morgan will be big defensively,” Howard said. “Ellie will be vying for another setting position. She is really versatile and does a great job.

Marissa and Ashley have a really strong presence on the block, and are coming from the right side offensively.

“We also have three sophomores who will be pushing the others. They’re passionate.”

With this group, Howard feels she has a solid team who really understand the game.

“They have a passion for volleyball and are really sound fundamental players,” Howard said. “With their skills, multiplied with their commitment, they

Serving Our Quality Smoked Meats and

don’t want the ball to drop and continue to drive.

“They are focused to get themselves better and want to show their fundamental skills.”

Webster City will compete in the tough North Central Conference once again. Algona and Humboldt were coconference champions, finishing 5-2. Webster City, Clear Lake and ClarionGoldfield-Dows were all 4-3.

“Our goal is always to vie for a conference title,” Howard said. “It was a real close battle last year and all the teams were pretty equal across the board.

“There is a lot of experience in the conference.”

they left off last year.

“What I’ve seen so far is that the boys really want to be pushed everyday and I believe our strength is in that determination and passion.”

Hill, a sophomore, was 15th at districts. Zanker placed 25th for the Hawks.

“This group seems to be really meshing well together as a team,” Ferrie said. “Every runner seems to have a voice in the group and they are all encouraging each other.

I’m excited to see the progress that they make as a unit if they continue on the same page.”

and 54 TDs, as contributors Kolby Hodnefield, Ashton Williams, Braden Young and Jose Babcock all return.

Hodnefield had 658 yards and six scores, Williams added 320 and four, Young had 183 and four while Babcock added 135 and two. Young is also the only player back with experience at quarterback, having attempted three passes last year.

“We have great strength at our skill positions,” Skartvedt said. “Offensive line and defensive line do not have much experience back due to graduation.”

The defense, which recorded two shutouts in 2023, will need to replace the likes of Noah Gunderson, Tjerdan Johnson,

a season ago.

Hodnefield, Severseike, Williams, Brock Zorn and Landon Sogard are all returning starters, while Young, Babcock and Connor Deppe each saw extensive playing time.

South Hamilton forced 17 turnovers in 2023, including 10 interceptions. Young and Hodenfield each picked off two passes. Hodnefield will also handle return duties while Young returns as the kicker.

SOUTH HAMILTON FALL SPORTS SCHEDULE

SOUTH HAMILTON’S OLIVIA BEAUNE runs for the Hawks last season. Beaune will be a junior for the Hawks this fall.

And while some key pieces from that squad have moved on, Brim will have 16 returning letterwinners back, with eight of those being returning starters.

“Our 2024 team has the potential to continue the tradition of Lynx football that has been established by the teams before them,” Brim said. “We have several players that are really eager to contribute this year, some that did last year also but some that really haven’t had a chance to prove themselves yet.

“They have all been great through our offseason and have really risen to the challenge of being part of the team that transitions between Coach Howard and myself.”

Seniors Luke Estlund, Jayden Weinzetl, Cael Nixon, Carson Bertran and Gabe Ruby are joined by juniors Aiden Hrnicek, Bean Nohrenberg and Cole Nohrenberg as starters back from a year ago.

Other returning letterwinners include Jacob Feldhaus, Jake Rohmiller, Max McGilligan, Brian Alaniz, Brandon Newman, Jaxon Griffith, Cody Elliott and Eli Estlund. Six of those seven

are members of the offensive and defensive lines, which have been a key strong point for the Lynx over the years.

Nixon ran for over 600 yards and scored seven touchdowns, while Estlund added 351 and two scores as part of a rushing unit that racked up over 3,600 yards and 42 TDs. Estlund was also the leading receiver last year for catches and yardage.

Hrnicek, Weinzetl, Grifftih, Estlund, Beau Nohrenberg and Bertran each recorded over 20 tackles, with Weinzetl ranking among the team leaders at 57 stops — including 16.5 for loss — and six sacks.

“When it comes down to it, we have some big holes to fill,” Brim said. “We lose Jaxon Cherry, who is arguably the best player to ever put on a Lynx uniform. We lose Keegan Hisler, who was a great all-around football player. We lose a majority of our offensive line.

“And we lose Coach Bob Howard, one of the state’s best coaches.”

Webster City has had nine straight winning seasons, including six years where they won at least eight games during that stretch.
