16-bit history We Remember... NBA Jam T.E. By: Midway Release date: 1993

PICTURE QU?Z

NBA Jam, which featured 2-on-2 basketball, is one of the first real playable basketball arcade games, and is also one of the first sports games to feature NBAlicensed teams and players, and their real digitized likenesses. A key feature of NBA Jam is the exaggerated nature of the play - players jump many times above their own height, making slam dunks that defy both human capabilities and the laws of physics. There are no fouls, free throws, or violations except goaltending and 24-second violations. This meant the player is able to freely shove or elbow his opponent out of the way. Additionally, the game has an "on fire" feature, where if one player makes three baskets in a row, he becomes "on fire" and has unlimited turbo and has increased shooting precision. The "on fire" mode continues until the other team scores, or until the player who is on fire scores 4 additional consecutive baskets while "on fire."

This Hawk is Still Flying Isn’t it fun to have a little history under our belts to see what one man has accomplished and is still accomplishing with music in his lifetime. Without question, Kirk Kaufman may be the most innovative and may be one of the most important musician/businessman in the history of Iowa rock and roll. History has and is proving it to be the case.

In addition he is performing with Heather Kelly, Dave Hearn (Ex Hawks), Jon Passow and Melvin James in HipKnosis. He is still playing and creating.

Most communities would never be able to create or duplicate such a musical thread. The rock and roll thread that ties this all together for Fort Dodge, is one man........Kirk Kaufman!!

In sitting down to write this column, I was trying to think of a term that I feel best describes Kirk Kaufman. That term would be “A True Iowa Music Renaissance Man.”

I’m sure there were times when people were saying, “What is that Kaufman kid doing with all that rock and roll stuff.” “It’s just crazy to put a rock and roll studio out on that farm.”

My congratulations goes out to Kirk Kaufman. You have made us all appreciate what you have accomplished all the while making us true rock and roll fans!!

Caption

A True Iowa Music Renaissance Man

I have been writing about Iowa’s rock and roll history for some thirty five years, and I’ve never seen one man have such a creative impact on one communities rock and roll history or the entire state for that matter, as Kirk.

In looking at the Fort Dodge rock and roll thread. There is West Minister, The Hawks, The Laramar Ballroom, established West Minister Sound -Juniors Motel-Chicken Shack Studios, a Columbia Records recording contract and being inducted three times into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. There is the recording of B.J Thomas, Brian Wilson and Spring (Mrs. Brian Wilson) at the above noted studios.

When one looks at the rock and roll history for a community or area, they always seems to be some common threads that tie such music together. All too often, that musical thread is broken for some reason and that past history gets lost over time. Sometimes that thread is an individual. Many times those threads are still active and producing exciting new musical concepts and productions.

Kirk still operates his studio and can claim a couple of successful recording sessions for the likes of Slipknot and Stone Sour. Does it really get any bigger than that?

Kirk & the Band The Hawks appeared on the first cover of Twist & Shout.

If you have not heard, this Labor Day weekend, Kirk Kaufman will be bestowed with the Iowa Rock & Roll Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. It is this organization’s highest honor. How fitting!
