Rick Springfield SHELLABRATION to headline

JULY 26 CONCERT WILL BE DOWNTOWN

The musical tale of “Jesse’s Girl” will echo throughout downtown Fort Dodge on July 26 when Rick Springfield takes the stage for this year’s Shellabration concert.

If we’ve learned one thing, it’s that Fort Dodge loves its ‘80s artists.
-Craig Schlienz “ “

The Babys, a British band most popular from 1977 to 1980, will take the stage in advance of Springfield, a Grammy Award winning singer.

A local favorite, Tank Anthony Band, will get the show started as the opening act.

For the first time, Shellabration will be held at the intersection of Central Avenue and Ninth Street, which is the site of the Downtown Country Jam.

“We’re excited about moving it downtown,” said Craig Schlienz, a member of the Shellabration Inc. board that organizes both major concerts. “It’s a fun atmosphere,” he said. Downtown Fort Dodge, he said, provides a “natural backdrop” for live music.

He acknowledged that setting up for a concert and later taking everything down is easier downtown than at the Oleson Park Bandshell or Harlan and Hazel Rogers Sports Complex.

The summer Shellabration concert has long been a showcase for classic rock. Shellabration President Jim Reed described this year’s show as a “our triumphant return to the ‘80s.”

“If we’ve learned one thing, it’s that Fort Dodge loves its ‘80s artists,” he said.

RICK SPRINGFIELD

Springfield burst onto the American music scene in 1981 with the No. 1 hit “Jesse’s Girl.”

That year he won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

His string of hits continued with “I’ve Done Everything for You,” “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” “Affair of the Heart,” and ‘Love Somebody.”

4 May 2024 twist & shout

Throughout the 1980s, he had 17 Top 40 hits. His music career began in his native Australia with a band called Zoot which he played in from 1969 to 1971. He then went solo. In 1972, he had a Top 10 hit in Australia with “Speak to the Sky.”

Springfield may be equally well known for his acting career. He played Dr. Noah Drake on “General Hospital.” He also appeared on “The Six Million Dollar Man,” “”High Tide,” “The Rockford Files,” and “The Incredible Hulk.”

THE BABYS

This band may be best known for “Isn’t It Time.” Other hits from The Babys are “”Every Time I Think of You,” “Head First,” “Back On My Feet Again,” and “Midnight Rendezvous.”

The band broke up in 1981. It reunited in 2013 and has played a small number of shows since then.

Reed said the band played in Iowa five times during the 1970s and early 1980s. He said it has never performed in Iowa since reuniting in 2013.

TICKETS: TICKET SALES BEGIN ONLINE APRIL 26 AT TICKETWEB.COM. TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT SELECT LOCAL BUSINESSES STARTING MAY 25. TICKETS WILL COST $40 BEFORE JULY 14. AFTER THAT DATE, THEY WILL COST $50.

The theme is “Generations of Families, Together as One,” to celebrate the family culture of the school.

“We are a third generation St. Edmond family and are looking forward to meeting those who are just joining our community,” Theresa Webster said. “Whether you’re a multiple generation family or a one and only, we all are united with the same goals that our school provides.”

Eighth-grader Irene Song created the logo that will be used in print and Emma Barwin created one to be used at the ball as decoration.

A buffet dinner will be served until 7:30 p.m. The Spirit of St. Edmond Awards will be presented during the dinner. Both live and silent auctions are set. Online bidding began April 20 at www.biddingforgood. com/seball and will be available through May 4.

“We are excited to bring out the teacher wish list board,” Gina Carzoli said. “I love to be a part of anything that gives back and helps support our teachers and staff.”

There will also be a wine and whiskey pull as Salty View provides live entertainment.

“We have really enjoyed our time at the ball the last few years and wanted to get more involved and give back,” Chris Carzoli said. WEST MINIST’R

A TRUE IOWA POWERHOUSE, THEY WERE POPULAR EVERYWHERE

Some time back I ran across a poster from 1971 for the infamous Showboat Ballroom in Lake Benton, MN. This ballroom was in the middle of nowhere and was no “showboat.” It was a rough and tumble territorial ballroom that just about any band wanted to play. Getting a date at the Showboat, meant you had arrived, the same could be said if you got booked at our Laramar or Okoboji’s Roof Garden Ballrooms. There were just places you really wanted to play at.

At the Showboat you were mixed in with the best of the Minneapolis, Sioux Falls and Kansas bands. You had better be on your game when you played there. This ballroom also competed directly with the Hollyhock Ballroom in Hatfield, MN and the Valhalla Ballroom in Slayton, MN. Tough competition.

This poster featured two of South Dakota’s best groups, Wonderband, with former members of the Pilgrims and Steve Ellis & The Starfires and the Outer Limits. In fact, Wonderband was featuring Jimmy Goings as their lead singer, who would go on to front national recording artists, Santa Esmeralda, of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” fame. Also on this poster was a great band from

Where am I going with all of this, here was West Minist’r on the poster playing TWO shows at the Showboat, one of early December and the other date on New Years Eve. Talk about a group that was putting people in the seats. So impressive!

I also thought back about the incredible record released by West Minist’r with those amazing vocals, a big full sound, and a garage edge to it that really caught your attention. It was West Minist’r’s first recorded effort. This song was, “Bright Lights, Windy City” backed by “Carnival” on Razzberry Records #SR2975A. The band recorded this incredible disc in 1969 at Sears Studios in Omaha, NE.

Many years later I spoke with the Showboats owner, Jimmy Thomas of Luverne, MN and he brought up this amazing record that he heard while booking West Minist’r, of course it was “Bright Lights, Windy City.”

The story of West Minist’r begins with a humble start to create a band that was without question, Iowa’s best band of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. The original group consisted of Dean Davis-drums, Rusty Bell-lead guitar, Frank Wiewel-bass, Kirk Kaufman-guitar, and Chuck Henderson-keyboards and bass. By 1972 Davis and Bell would leave the group and were replaced by Arnie Bode-drums and Keith “Howdy” Brown-guitar. Still later Terry Dillon-keyboards and Rick Schaeffer would join the band.

The band was especially popular on the Midwest ballroom circuit that saw them playing across, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, and Illinois. They appeared with such A-listers as: Sly & The Family Stone, the Box Tops, the Buckinghams, Mason Proffit, Detroit’s Frigid Pink, and even the Tonight Show’s Doc Severinsen.

They were headlining draws at the majority of the Midwest ballrooms, one time drawing over 2000 plus people at our Laramar Ballroom in downtown Fort Dodge. They were huge draws at Lake Okoboji’s Roof Garden Ballroom and Clear Lake’s Surf Ballroom as well as the above mentioned Showboat Ballroom.

In 1971 the guys in the band decided to build their own recording studio. It was created on Kirk Kaufman’s family farm West of Otho, IA in a re-built chicken building. It was called West Minist’r Studio and later as Junior’s Motel Recording. The main two instigators for the studio were Kaufman and Wiewel who got the business going, but all the band members pitched in and helped.

West Minist’r ended up recording two more 45’s at their own studio. First in 1971 with “Sister Jane/I Want You” on their own Magic Records label #MSX-45001 and in 1972 with “Mr Fingers/ My Life” also on Magic Records #KK 7432. Some of their records have been included on such national compilation LP releases including “Glimpses,” “Brown Acid Trip” and “Mind Blowers.” Junior’s Motel has been successful with artists such as Brian Wilson (Beach Boys), B J Thomas and Slipknot, having all spent multiple days recording there.

Some fun side notes on the band and why the the name West Minist’r used an apostrophe in the spelling of their name. It used this spelling so they could get the name to fit on Davis’s bass drum head. At the height of their popularity, each band member was taking home $200 a week. That was major league money for high school kids at that time. After West Minist’r, Kaufman and Wiewel started the band Hawks that were signed to Columbia Records for a two LP deal.

Today Kaufman still owns Junior’s Motel along with his son Matt. Davis still drums with Lone Tree Revival along with teaching drums lessons. He estimates he has taught over 1000 kids how to play drums. Keith Brown and his wife Julie own the successful Crystal Sound Recording Studio in Des Moines, IA where they have done work for such corporate giants as McDonalds, Disney, Wells Fargo and American Express.

I hope you were one of the lucky ones to have been a part of the juggernaut that was West Minist’r here in Fort Dodge or around the Midwest.

Until Next Month

A suggestion to the owners of the new Laramar Ballroom. Do you want to pack the place like never before, pull out all the stops and get West Minist’r back on stage for one more last show!

Rollie Jensen

Age: 64 • Hometown: Brookings, SD/Humboldt, IA Instrument: Percussion/Drums

How did you first become interested in making music?

I grew up in a musical family, my Mother playing church organ and my Father playing accordion. There was always music in our house day and night. Growing up on a farm, we learned early on that “hard work always beats out talent”.

What was your educational path?

I graduated in a class of 27 students from a small school in White, South Dakota called Deubrook. My college years were spent playing percussion at SDSU – Brookings, graduating with a Bachelors in Music Education in 1982. I taught Grades 5-8 band at Pocahontas from 1983 – 2006.

What was your most memorable part about being an educator?

We had band every day, so seeing enthusiastic youngsters and their progress was memorable. Music was my hobby, so I basically never had to go to work a day in my life as a band director. Most enjoyable part of teaching is when that “lightbulb” moment happens with the students. “I See, Forget, I Hear, I Remember, I Do, I Understand.”

How long have you been performing?

Around 50 years, as I started playing drums with “Harlof Jensen & the Bluebirds”, my Dad’s polka band in South Dakota. I was 14 years old earning $40 for a 4 hour gig and paid my way through college performing in many polka, country & rock n roll groups in eastern South Dakota.

Tell us about some of the bands you have been in.

I have been playing drums and singing with “The Expressions” Rock n Roll Band out of Storm Lake from 1986 – present.

A longtime member of the percussion section with the Karl King Municipal Band from 1985 – present.

I also have led the Humboldt Big Band for over 38 years during the annual Humboldt Community Chorus Show in February.

I played drums for the Miss South Dakota Pageant in the Black Hills for 16 years.

Playing polka music is my passion, having played with Little Joe Polka Band, Wayne Ripke, Karl Hartwich, Peter & Paul Wendinger, Barefoot Becky and others throughout the Midwest.

Who has had the greatest influence for you when it comes to music?

I was fortunate to have many teachers, musicians and friends who gave me the opportunity to explore and discover my potential through my years in music. Find your passion and surround yourself with folks who love music, and everything else will fall into place.

If I were to pick one person, it would be Cameron McCurdy, my coworker, mentor and high school band director at Pocahontas Area for over 20 years. Cam taught me to be organized and learn something from every musical experience and carry it to the next performance. He was the most talented all-around musician I have ever met, and a wonderful, kind, passionate person who kept me on level ground.

If you had a chance to meet any performer/ musician, alive or dead, whom would you choose and why?

Doc Severinsen because he has been an idol of mine for years since watching him play trumpet and lead the band on “The Tonight Show”. Doc is a very colorful figure and continues to perform at age 96. He is a true inspiration and achieved tremendous success with his hard work. He taught me: “Don’t practice until you get it right. Practice until you

14 May 2024 twist & shout

What are some of your musical accomplishments?

I was selected to South Dakota All-State Band & Orchestra my junior and senior year in high school.

Percussion Section Leader at SDSU when we marched in President Reagan’s Inaugural Parade in 1981 with “The Pride of the Dakotas” Marching Band.

A very successful school band program at Pocahontas Area with many awards through the years at Carroll Band Day, Orange City Tulip Fest, Algona Band Day and “Best of Class” at Adventureland Contest in 2005 being some of our highlights.

Iowa Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Inductee in 2011 and Midwest AllMusic Association Hall of Fame in 2021 with “The Expressions”.

What is the most unusual thing to have happened to you during a show/ performance?

1981 President Reagan Inaugural Parade, with over 450 horses in the parade and we were instructed to keep our heads high, lines straight and march through the horse droppings no matter what. At the end of the parade route, everyone took off their shoes, tied them together and hung them out the bus window.

These days, where can we see you playing throughout the year?

You will find me playing drums in NW Iowa with “The Expressions” throughout the summer months, Karl King Band Concerts in Fort Dodge, Pocahontas & Emmetsburg Community Bands, many area jam sessions, big bands at Lake Robbins Ballroom, and Midwest Polka Fests with “Barefoot Becky”. Music is my life and would mean nothing without the support of my lovely wife, Becky. You will see Becky and I attending and supporting many live music events in the area.

What has been the hardest lesson to learn when it comes to music and performing?

The hardest lesson is that perfection is something none of us will ever reach. However, it is the journey towards perfection that matters more than the end result. Not sure I have ever played a perfect song from start to finish, but keep going, smile and never show the audience you made a mistake. Strive to be the best you can be and have the confidence in yourself and your potential. Make a connection and interact with the audience before, during and after each performance. Pick music that the musicians will like playing, and the audience will enjoy listening to. “Happy Music for Happy People.”
