The Fort Dodge Fine Arts Association is once again inviting local pups & their humans to their second Pawcasso Pawty on August 27. “I have 3 dogs, crazy I know. I’m always envious of cities that are pet friendly, and I’m always trying to come up with different fundraising ideas that might appeal to our community,” said Shelly Bottorff, FDFAA director. Because of all of this, I started thinking about how we could incorporate the dog loving world and the art world together for a fun event for everyone.” Bottorff started thinking of ways she could involve our local animal programs with the FD Fine Arts Association and create something that benefits everyone. She thought people have been having dog parties for years all over, so why not try it here.
A couple of stations will be set up for dog games where they can win treats or prizes.
I started thinking about how we could incorporate the dog loving world and the art world together for a fun event for everyone Shelly Bottorff
“The first one was just a blast. Everyone had a great time, the dogs were so well behaved and although windy, the weather was perfect,” said Bottorff. “Soldier Creek Winery seems to be the perfect location too. Plenty of space, beautiful lawns, one of the most helpful group of people to work with and it just works perfectly for Dogs, Art & Wine!”
4
The event will be like the first one they held earlier this summer. There will be a wide variety of stations for pups and their humans to enjoy including portraits, doggy art, a photo booth, and much more. There will be several pet friendly pools and sprinklers for the dogs to play and cool off in.

Bottorff added, “Peanut butter painting is always a big hit, and we will even have a groomer station sharing tips, essential oil safety for pets, Webster County Animal Protection and Almost Home.
New to this event: FD Kennel’s Club’s demonstrations, the wiener dog races, costume contest, and a few other surprises for guest who attend to see. A variety of dog treats, trinkets and beverages will also be available for purchase.

Alex Travino will be providing the live music for the guest to enjoy, and Isaiah Degan will be doing live paintings as well. There are some rules for dogs and their owners in attendance. Dogs must be courteous and able to socialize with people and other dogs, be on a leash and supervised by their humans at all times, up-to-date on all vaccinations and flea treatments, and humans must clean up any happy little accidents that their pet may leave behind. Preregistration is encouraged and can be done through Soldier Creek Winery’s Event site at www.soldiercreekwinery. com. You can also register in person the day of.
“Once registered you can walk around, take your time, sip some wine and enjoy the day with your pet,” added Bottorff. “If our second one continues to be well supported, I could see a Pawctober Fest in the near future.” THE FDFA is a non-profit organization that relies solely on grants and donations. The proceeds from this event will go directly to their operating fund so they can continue to provide new art and culture experiences, educational opportunities, and community engagements in the Fort Dodge area.
The “Bark 2 School – Pawcasso Pawty” will take place on Saturday, August 27 from 1:00 – 5:00 at Soldier Creek Winery, 1584 Paragon Ave. Admission costs will be $35 for One Dog and $50 if you have two dogs in your family. The fee includes a glass of wine, access to all the stations.

Fighting Angels Abreast are looking for new members to Join their Team by hailey brueschke
In the summer of 2005, the Breast Cancer Survivors (BCS) team, Fighting Angels Abreast was formed with the help of Tom & Linda Donner and Barb Michaels. After a few times in the boat, they wanted them to compete in the Dragon Boat Bash that summer. “At that time, we didn’t know a lot about this sport or what we were doing, and we were too new for a name for a team,” said Cheryl Lychwick.
The BCS team’s main goal is to promote awareness of the positive outcomes of early detection and that one can lead an active life after a breast cancer diagnosis. They paddle as a support group on the water and to meet other BCS Teams. Lychwick added, “We share our stories, our fears, and our triumphs. As a Fighting Angels Abreast team, we get silly, we laugh and we may cry…but together our mission is to celebrate life as a symbol of strength and hope to each other and all those touched by breast cancer.”
Tom volunteered to be the coach, trainer, and stern, and soon they were out on the water practicing for their first competition. The very first year they named themselves “Too New For A Name,” it wasn’t until the next year that they were called “Fighting Angels Abreast,”
The “Fighting Angels Abreast” BCS team are looking for any person who has been diagnosed with breast cancer to join their team. It is best to consult with your oncology doctors/ team on how soon after treatment begins that it is okay for you to join the other Breast Cancer Survivors in the boat.
Presently, they have 8 active BCS paddlers, but as the team ages, their numbers continue to get lower.
Lychwick said, “We invite any Survivors to join us and encourage you to step out of your comfort zone to try it. Fifteen years, ten years, five years, two years, one year of survival; we all have our number. But we have survived, and we want to celebrate life together!”
The Hong Kong Boat consists of 20 Paddlers, a Drummer, and a Stern. The guidelines for National, International and Championship BCS races require all 22 people in the boat to be Breast Cancer Survivors in the BCS Division. In the rural Midwest areas, far from big metropolitan areas, some festivals allow Supporters in the boat to give the BCS paddlers an opportunity to paddle as a team; however, for all BC Survivors races they either must sit out or combine to make a team with other outside BCS teams because they don’t have enough BCS paddlers. The Fort Dodge Badger Lake Festival organizers have a Survivor/Supporter category which allows Supporters to paddle in our boat; however, the number of Supporters in the boat cannot outnumber the number of Survivors in the boat,” Lychwick said. “There is NO limit to the number of Breast Cancer Survivors that can be on a team; however, if there is a team of at least 25 (a few extras), the team can travel and participate with other BCS Survivor teams in their same caliber.”
6
The team practices on Badger Lake at Kennedy Park, north of Fort Dodge, Iowa. We try to be on the water by Memorial Day until removing the boats from the water for the winter in early Fall. During that time, opportunities are available to attend a practice on Sundays (around 5:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.), depending on schedules.
On August 12 & 13, 2022, it will be the 25th Anniversary of dragon boat racing at the Badger Lake Dragon Boat Bash. A Silent Auction will be held in conjunction with the event beginning Friday evening, August 12 and continuing until approximately noon on Saturday, August 13. “All the proceeds (100%) will be donated to the cancer center at our local hospital to assist with cancer patient needs and uninsured costs. These donations by businesses and dragon boat teams are greatly appreciated,” Lychwick said. As part of the Festival celebration, there will be a BCS Flower Ceremony on Saturday, August 13 after the morning Time Trials and before the divisions Championship racing begins. The BCS Flower Ceremony honors our BC Survivors and remembers those that lost their battle to Breast Cancer. If you are a Breast Cancer Survivor and want to join our BCS team in a boat on the water for the BCS Flower Ceremony, please let Cheryl Lychwick know at bcsdistrict@yahoo.com. Lychwick added, “We want to have enough boats available to take out the interested BC Survivors! If you want to come and just watch the Festival racing on Saturday and/or want to visit with BCS team members, come to our tent with the pink top near the water’s edge by the beach and introduce yourself!”
No previous experience is necessary and no special equipment except water shoes in and around the boats. Bringing along a bottle of water for hydration while paddling is a good idea and the routine in the sun; a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. The boat, the paddle and even a life vest are provided. The Fighting Angels Abreast BCS Team is a part of the Badger Lake Dragon Boat Association (BLDBA) along with the more competitive (not BCS) Da’Dragons Team. The Da’Dragons have very experienced, championship paddlers on their team and challenge our paddling skills when we all paddle together at a practice.

ROCKIN’ AROUND THE CLOCK AT THE LARAMAR
BILL HALEY & THE COMETS COME TO FORT DODGE I’ve got some questions, all with the same answer. Who was the rock and roll artist that is credited with being the first rock act in music history? Who is the same artist credited with the first major rock and roll hit? Who was the artist that first took rock and roll to the major movie screen? Who was that same artist that played live at the Laramar Ballroom? If you said Bill Haley and his Comets, you are correct. Just think, that the man who created it all, was rockin’ the room in Fort Dodge. Bill Haley’s is a fascinating story. One that you wouldn’t think might work.
Bill has born in Michigan. Because of the great depression, his family moved to Pennsylvania which became Bill’s family home. Early in life he was fascinated with the guitar and learned to play it proficiently. When he was growing up all that was on the radio was country music, so that is what Bill set out to learn. At age 15 he left home to become a country music star, Haley learned to yodel and became one of the best yodelers in country music. Soon he was asked to join a country road group, but because of Haley’s fame, the name of the band was changed to Bill Haley and the Saddlemen. They played club dates, live shows at radio stations and wanted to make a record. Bill’s mind-set was that they needed to “rock it up,” so released “Rocket 88” on Holiday Records. It was 1952, and because of the new record, the band changed its name to Bill Haley and the Comets. This was a very risky name for 1952-53. In 1953 the band released the iconic, “Crazy Man Crazy” for Essex Records. This became the first rock and roll song to land on the American charts hitting #15 on Billboard. Bill Haley and the Comets were now officially Americans FIRST true rock and roll group. Haley and the Comets followed that up with “Shake Rattle & Roll” and it went on to sell over a million copies, went to #1 and was the first American rock and roll song to enter the British charts. Very impressive. In 1955 Haley recorded the legendary “Rock Around the Clock” and released it on Essex Records. The band was quickly signed to Decca Records. In late 1955 Decca quickly re-released “Rock Around the Clock,” it went to #1 on the Billboard charts selling over one million copies in the U. S, and England. Rock and roll was on its way. The song was used for the soundtrack for the movie “Blackboard Jungle.”
10
There was no hotter record than “Rock Around the Clock.”
Haley’s popularity was on full display. It was a little awkward that America was trying to define the music of the youth and Haley had already reached age 30. To make him look younger, Haley always wore his hair with a large curl hanging onto his forehead, making him trying look hipper to the kids. The “real deal” rock and roll hits just kept on coming: “See You Later Alligator,” (Sold 1 million) “Shake Rattle & Roll,” (Sold 1 Million) “Skinny Minnie” and “Razzle Dazzle.” While the hits were coming one after one, Haley & the Comets were the first American rock group to tour Europe. Haley even had roles in the movies “Rock Around The Clock.” and “Don’t Knock The Rock.” American Bandstand liked to have Haley and the Comets on their show and he was the first rock artist to ever appear on the Ed Sullivan Show. Because of Haley’s age he was soon pushed aside by a younger Elvis Presley and his career started to fall. It’s like today’s country scene, an artist is “here today and gone tomorrow.” Soon Haley and the Comets were an also ran and not hot any longer. But they could still find steady work, but not as head-liners. Haley’s later years were very hard for Bill, as he fought so many demons. Sadly, he passed away in 1981. Former members of the Comets have kept their flame alive and toured, doing many shows after Haley’s death. Bill Haley & The Comets have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the National R&B Hall of Fame, Hollywood Walk of Fame and have seen Munich, Germany open a Bill Haley & the Comets Museum. I wonder what the kids were thinking when the Laramar Ballroom in August of 1958 brought Bill Haley and the Comets to the ballroom for a special show as a part of a Midwest tour he was doing. I’m sure the kids were excited to get such a big-name rock act to appear in downtown Fort Dodge. Having the true “godfather” of rock and roll in town must have been an exciting time for everyone.

A bit insecure, determined, and hopefully becomes a force to be reckoned with. (Mezzo-soprano) Doralee Rhodes - sexy, country gal (think Dolly!) who is the secretary for the boss, Franklin Hart. How did you become interested in music and theater?
I was fortunate enough to have older cousins who were very involved in the FDSH Theater Department and I always enjoyed watching them perform. So, when I had the opportunity to go out for theater and perform for audiences, I took it.
Do you come from an artistic family? If so, in what ways?
Considering the definition of Art from person to person is rather subjective, anyone could come from an artistic family. Most of my cousins have been in theater and I have an uncle who is an incredible artist, graphic designer and painter. Performing and creating are the two major definitions of art, so those are my prime examples.
What, or who, inspired you to teach yourself guitar? Where can we hear your perform? The older I got, the more interested in music I got. I always thought the guitar was cool. About 2 years ago, I just decided I wanted to finally learn. My uncle plays guitar and he was self-taught, so I told him if he found a used guitar for me to let me know. I finally bought an acoustic guitar and then covid hit. So, my only option was to figure it out by reading music and playing until things sounded right. I finally figured it out after lots of practice.
How many original tunes have you written, and, what do you most enjoy about writing your own songs?
I am working on getting a date set up for an opening performance at Shiny Top Brewing. After that I would love to set up some more live shows. In the meantime, you can find my music on any streaming service.
Will music and the arts be a part of your life in 25 years? If so, how?
As long as I have a guitar or a pencil, I will always be drawing or picking my 6 string. Drawing, playing and singing are all such a big part of my life at this point that I truly couldn’t see a future without them.
I have written 12 full songs. I am actively working on about What are your plans after high school? 4. I really enjoy being able to tell my own stories with I plan on going to Iowa Central Community College for 2 nothing holding me down but my imagination. years and I would love to be involved in their theater and music programs.
What theater productions have you been involved in?
I was involved in The Wizard of Oz and King Artie and the Knights of the Rad Table in middle school and have been involved in While the Lights Were Out and Footloose in high school. I recently performed in a community theater show under the direction of Mrs. Krug called Johnny Brooke: A Ghost Story.
Who do you look up to and why?
Naming one person isn’t easy. I am fortunate enough to have many influences in my life for every part of it. Obviously I look up to my parents a lot, but I would say some of the people I look up to the most musically would be Zach Bryan, Evan Felker, Eddie Van Halen, Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson to name a few.
What is the most challenging part for you when it comes to performing?
You have 2 tickets to go to any live concert. The band/performer can be any, living or The most challenging part for me might be memorization. deceased. Who would you choose to see, I can go up on a stage and perform with no problem as far who would you take and why?

I will always be nervous about forgetting a line or lyric be between seeing the Eagles in their prime and Van Halen. though. I think at the end of the day, I would choose Van Halen because seeing Eddie just solo for ten minutes straight would be absolutely incredible. As for who I’d take, that is even hard to answer. Although my parents both love music, and I have been to multiple concerts with them, when it comes to Eddie, I gotta pick my Uncle Russ. 16

ISAC SILVA OLIVEIRA Age: 39 • Hometown: Ipatinga / Minas Gerais / BRAZIL • Career/Profession: MUSICIAN (Drummer)
Welcome to Fort Dodge! What brings you to our community?
I am very happy to have been so well received in this beautiful city. I came to study. I got a scholarship to Iowa Central Community College where I will study music. And I’m really very happy.
Did you grow up in a musical home?
Yes, my mother is a guitarist. A samba and choro guitarist. Since I was 3 years old, she used to put the guitar on my lap while listening to the classics of choro and samba. My sisters are also musicians!
Tell us about your favorite musical experiences as a child.
My best memories as a child are me and my family together in church worship. Since I was 8 years old I participated in our church’s worship group at the time, and I loved doing it with my family.
We’d love to hear about your musical journey as an adult. University experiences - for fresh out of college and in the real world!
I’ve always worked with several bands and singers from Brazil in addition to several free lances with styles and artists from Brazil. I worked with several internationally renowned artists, traveling around Brazil and around the world doing my art, playing drums. I left my mark on more than 80 albums throughout Brazil. I have always participated in several Workshops and Master Class of musicians from all over the world teaching Brazilian rhythm. I founded the ISAC JAMBA Drummer Institute in Brazil, known throughout Brazil. The institute reached more than 60 enrolled students. Stand out at the festival internationally as Odery and Mordem Drummer, and being a BDMG Young Musician winner competing with over 3000 drummers. I participated with my hometown Ipatinga in several social projects throughout my professional career, in public schools, day care centers and with project partners. And I am currently 100% sponsored (Endorce) by two Pearl brands and MEINL.
When did you know you wanted a career as a professional musician?
com. With in the platform, the drummer has access to several stations from beginning to advanced. I also work as a freelancer in bands and church and recordings for great artists around the world.
Who inspires you and why?
My greatest inspiration is God. He teaches us all to be a person of respect and integrity.
What was the biggest challenge along the way to where you are today?
My biggest challenge was leaving Brazil. When I came to live here in the United States, I didn’t speak any English. I adapted to the culture. It was very challenging, but today I look back and see that this country is worth it and I would do it again!
What advice would you give to a young adult who is thinking about a music scene?
I tell all of my students, for you to become a recognized musician, you need to have hours of study on your instrument. If you go 1 week without touching your instrument, or a student “forgets” their instrument, they can’t make up for that lost time. There’s no secret, it’s your dedication and daily study.
What was the highest point for you in your career?
I am very proud to answer this question. The highest point came this year. I’ve been given the opportunity to be sponsored here in the United States by two great Drummer brands “PEARL and “MEINL”
What else do you like that our readers know?
I’m Christian. I am married. I have experience in recordings of various styles. I have musical experience in all musical styles, live music I am highly professional. I’ve played with several names in Brazilian and international instrumental music, and my instagram is @ isacjamba.
Since I was 5 years old I’ve had this idea in my head and I’ve never deviated from it. Thank God I had 100% support from my parents who gave me a professional drum kit at 5 years old.
What are you currently working on?
Currently I am 100% dedicated to my online classes. Together with my wife, Kellen, we created an online platform www.classes.isacjamba.
