Twist&Shout

ENTERTAINMENT MONTHLY

Anniversary 30th

Twist & Shout started off as a Fort Dodge monthly entertainment magazine featuring fun things to do that month and has grown to all of North, North-Central Iowa over the years. We share fundraisers, concerts, school plays and musicals, fairs, restaurants, car shows, and much more. Meet our team over the years that make Twist & Shout possible!

My name is Rachel Rowe. I have been with the Messenger Newspaper for going on 4 years and joined Twist & Shout March 2022. My favorite part of my day is when I get to work on Twist & Shout monthly publications. It is so fun to share all Fort Dodge and surrounding towns have going on for families like mine! I am a mother to 5 awesome kids and my husband and I are always looking for something to do. Since starting with Twist & Shout, we have expanded our readership to more than Webster County and I am so excited to share events, fundraisers, concerts, and more from our other counties that the Messenger covers too. I was very involved in the arts as a child and into high school and so were my siblings! When I started with Twist & Shout, it was exciting to see that even my little brother was on a lot of the front covers since Twist & Shout always covered the plays and musicals for the high schools and Iowa Central Community College. While going out to eat, seeing other families sitting at their tables grabbing the copies, free of charge, at the front of the buildings, is so great to see!

I am so glad to have met some amazing people working with Twist & Shout as well. I am excited for what the future holds and looking forward to help continuing this monthly publication.

Don’t forget to like ‘Twist & Shout, Fort Dodge, Iowa’ on Facebook too!

!My name is Hailey Brueschke. I live in Callender with my fiancé Justin and our two-year-old daughter Adley. I first started writing for Twist & Shout in the Spring of 2016 and have been freelancing on and off for them since. It has come a long way, even since I began writing for Twist. When I first began, Twist would only cover the Fort Dodge Area with the occasional event in a close by town such as Humboldt. I am very excited this year that they have decided to expand to events going on in all surrounding communities/towns. It gives readers a chance to learn more about all the events small towns have to offer and gives them a chance to have new experiences.

1 November 2022 • 30th Anniversary twist & shout

My name is Nick Manwarren. I have been the graphic designer for Twist and Shout for the last 20 years. So that is 2/3 of the lifespan of the publication since Twist and Shout is 30. So, let me show you my work. If you count to 10 three times you get 30, then subtract 1 of those 10’s you get twenty. Don’t be afraid to use your fingers doing mathematics, I do it all the time.

When I’m not preparing for the Math Olympics (real thing) I am busy telling dad jokes to my son Calvin, and daughter Julia. I have been a proud Fort Dodger since 2003, moving here after college at the University of Northern Iowa. I have made some life long friends here and am thankful to Twist and Shout & The Messenger for giving me an outlet for my creativity for so many years.

I was actually part of the Fort Dodge Performing Arts community when Twist & Shout was given birth. I remember vividly the excitement of having our shows featured so prominently in the community via a common space—which was The Messenger—committed to covering sports and arts equally alongside news and lifestyle articles. I think our community is rich in so many areas, and I believe the FD Messenger is an integral part of our anchor—and the brainchild which was Twist & Shout has been going strong for decades.

Whenever I’m asked how I got started with performing, I always point to my childhood. Arts and culture came predominantly into my upbringing through my family’s strong faith journey. I grew up singing, speaking, performing in church and in school, but directing theatre was a surprising twist for me. I did not begin as a theatre major. Instead, I was part of a gospel team in college called The New Creation Singers. There were six of us who toured and led revivals, summer camps, church services. All five of my teammates ended up joining the ministry, but I felt a pull, instead, to education. I’ve always believed that I landed where I was meant to be, and I’ve been here for over 40 years.

After moving to Iowa from Missouri (via Hawaii), I was immediately attracted to Fort Dodge’s rich tradition of performing arts. For me, it all began with Gail Niceswanger whose classroom was right next to mine on the second floor of FDSH. In fact, it was after he

retired that I took over the drama program there and was honored to have a hand in naming the Little Theatre after him. My first experience on stage in Fort Dodge, then, was being directed by Gail in a Hawkeye Community Theatre (HCT) show. I had an incredible time with friends—memories that linger still, as all performers will tell you.

I continued with HCT shows for years—and still am a performing member of our Praise Team at First Presbyterian Church. From there, I also loved performing with Comedia Música Players--Larry Mitchell drew me into those shows—and with the early years of variety shows that Cassie Langstaff put together to feature area performers—a practice that The Messenger picked up in conjunction with our Iowa Central performing arts staff who organized and directed an annual event called “This is Entertainment.”

Today, the legacy is continued in so many varied ways. FDSH, St. Ed’s and we here at Iowa Central make huge grassroot contributions to the arts—and then there are the rich performing venues for the adults and children in our community—and then for those patrons of the arts who enjoy the range that our community offers— from orchestras and gospel groups to local and professional bands to theatre and art and photography. I would say that the Twist & Shout publication is an incredible steward of the rich legacy that is Fort Dodge Fine and Performing Arts.

Tom Tourville is a native of Minnesota and now is retired and resides at Lake Okoboji, Iowa. Having always had a deep interest in the music of the ‘60s, and especially the music of the Midwest, he has turned this fascination into researching and writing over thirty books on record collecting, music collectibles and Midwest and Iowa rock music history. Tom has written 32 books on Midwest music history. He has written “A Look Back” for Twist & Shout starting with its second issue.

Leading music journals and newspapers have had this to say about Tourville, “Tourville is a research wizard.” “He is a premier musicologist” and “Tourville

knows his stuff and has a real passion for music research.”

He is a well-respected music columnist, who has been writing for national and Midwest-based publications for over 36 years. Tom is also a co-founder of the Iowa Rock N’ Roll Music Association.

I’m Tricia Winninger and worked at the Fort Dodge Messenger from spring of 2016 through early 2022. I started working on Twist & Shout a few months into the job when Mardi Engels left to pursue another position. There is no other magazine quite like Twist & Shout; from its rich history, amazing local content and spirited co-founders.

Anne Kersten really hustled to make a name for the publication. She traveled around the area promoting, taking photos of celebrities with it and seeing to it that she and the magazine was recognized. For the years I had the pleasure of producing Twist & Shout, I did so with the specific intention

of honoring previous hard work and continuing a legacy of recognizing the arts in our community. Twist & Shout is a vehicle in which creative and artistic people can be recognized and appreciated. I enjoyed and appreciated the collaborations with many local arts enthusiasts, business owners and other key players who put in the work and long hours to produce musicals, plays, concerts and visual arts, in particular Shelly Bottorff and Teresa Jackson. It was my pleasure to carry the torch for the time I did and pass it on to the very capable and creative hands of Rachel Rowe.

“With a Little Help from my Friends”

Celebrating 30 Years of Twist and Shout!

In the spring of 1992, a chance meeting between Dave Haldin and myself led to a publication that would bring entertainment news to the Fort Dodge community in the form of a monthly newspaper. We were both looking at a career change that involved marketing and promotional editorial. I had just finished 3 years with Fort Dodge TODAY magazine while Dave was finishing a job as a DJ.

Cover stories over the years have included: the Citizens of the Year, (which always led the Frontier Days parade!), musicals at both St. Edmond and Fort Dodge Senior High, events at Iowa Central Community College and plays by Hawkeye Community Theatre. More recently, events such as “Shellabration” and many of our local bands have also been featured. The number of talented people that have graced the cover are too numerous to mention; but it thrills us to see someone like Ben Ahlers ‘make it’ in acting, knowing we first featured him as a young boy in a stage production.

Regular Columnist Tom Tourville has been covering past rock and roll bands that performed in Fort Dodge over the years. He’s been a huge plus to the paper and led to Twist and Shout being inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for preserving Iowa’s rock and roll history.

In the earlier years Twist and Shout had a presence at the annual Buddy Holly Tribute, held at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. Meeting Maria Elena Holly, Peggy Sue and the Crickets was indeed a highlight. Funny that Buddy Holly has been on the cover more than any one person!

Other columnists that did a great job contributing to the success of the paper include Molly Johnson, Julie Thorson, Courtney Nash and Katie Averill. We can’t forget photographer, Steve Kersten, who was able to capture so many things for us. His photos even resulted in a phone call from Bobby Vee, who had seen the story on his appearance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. And to think he thought it was a joke, when he returned to work one day to a message from ‘Bob Vee’, wanting extra copies of his photos!

A story that appeared in the first few years was an interview with Robert Waller, author of “The Bridges of Madison County”; which sold over 60 million copies world-wide. We were fortunate to be one of the last ‘reporters’ to interview Mr. Waller, which was an afternoon to be remembered. Iowa’s Love story even brought Oprah Winfrey to the bridge. A telecast that we enjoyed covering.

A huge favorite of our readers has been the annual Historic Photo Calendar, which was started in 1999. It’s something that everyone looks forward to, and the photos are always a treat to see. The 2023 Calendar should be out soon!

The “Look Who’s Reading” feature was a ball. We’ve had current Presidents, vice-presidents, rock starsand best of all- our readers, who have enjoyed taking

the paper on vacation and snapping shots from all over the world. (See inside for an example).

One of the top stories in these 30 years must be “The People Who Made a Difference”. Featuring Fort Dodge men and women from as far back as our early founders, it highlighted their contributions to the city in so many ways.

Many thanks to Dave Haldin for all his work in developing this ‘little paper’ as he called it. Thanks to our readers, and our advertisers, who have made these 30 years possible. Thank you for making us who we are.

And a HUGE thank you to Nick Manwarren, who takes the time to put his creativity into Twist and Shout every month. There are many ‘behind the scenes’ people who contribute, but Nick continues to go above and beyond.

And a brief sidenote to my 8-year-old granddaughter, Evelyn, who often sings Twist and Shout, and who didn’t ‘know’ about the paper, “It’s much more than just a song Evelyn. It’s a Fort Dodge tradition.”

Twist & Shout

At the time that this publication was being thought about as a fun new publication to promote all the cool things going on in this community, my name was different, had the coolest job in the land and I was getting ready to go on a magical trip with 52 members of my family on a plane…together. I wrote about all the neat things going on at the Blanden Art Museum for exhibits, classes and anything else I could think of relating to art. It was a great way to expose people to the amazing art that is always on display in the museum. It was also a wonderful way to tell people about the art classes going on for kids or adults. Keep in mind this was the way to promote your place way before it was fun to do so on social media platforms. Each month was easy to write about as there was always something new and different.

Writing for Twist & Shout was a lot of fun. It was a great way to introduce to people to art that was accessible to them whether in the museum or some community event. It wasn’t easy to just write about what I was passionate about; the museum, the art collection, exhibits. I had to write it in a way that would engage the reader enough to take a break and come into the museum to see it. Knowing that the publication was put in various locations not just in Fort Dodge, but in the communities around us, was a great a simple way of marketing the museum for all to enjoy.

I was blessed to be able to write about what I loved, where I worked and to be creating an article in the same publication my father was writing in as well. We would compare our articles and trust me, sometimes his critiques were a bit tough. He would listen over the phone to the article I wrote before I sent it in, tell me what to change in wording, then give his blessing to it. That was important to me in everything I did for Twist & Shout, his opinion mattered. What people don’t know is we secretly would compete with each other on who got their article turned in first to Twist & Shout. Congratulations to Twist & Shout on 30 years of publication as well as thank you for always making the arts a vital part of everything that was printed for the public to see.

A Celestial Observance of Robert L. Adams

It all started with some light conversation at a Pizza Hut in Fort Dodge. The concept of an entertainment magazine/ publication was brought up over a Pan Pizza. “We need to find some good writers in the area to talk about various topics each month,” said co-founder Dave Haldin. I had an idea, my dad. He would be one of the writers in a column called, “Stardust”. Each month it was a dedication to the cosmic happenings in the sky that anyone could observe at their leisure. It was great to read his column as it reflected his knowledge of the universe, his faith as well as his incredible knowledge of historical, cultural tie ins with astronomical events. The column had followers before it was cool to have followers, all ages, he could reach people in a new way he hadn’t done for years. He truly enjoyed educating people about the stars through this writing. His

My father served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean war. He was in the Armed Forces Security Squadron/Intelligence Unit. During those four years he observed unusual activity in the skies, some were investigated in the Project Blue Book era. After his service, he went to law school but then decided to go to Harvard Divinity School. While attending Harvard he worked at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, MA. The compliment of astronomy and his faith soon landed him his first ministerial job. Later with my family he moved us to SE South Dakota, Vermillion where he held multiple jobs on campus, as an astronomy professor (15 years) and head of Student Affairs/ Ass’t to the President at the University of South Dakota. After this, he returned to ministry to head the 1st Congregational Church in Algona, then Canova, SD in “retirement”.

He was known for his star parties at Smith Lake in Algona, especially during the Perseid Meteor Showers. Over 300+ would come to sit/lay down on blankets to count meteors with him for the Nat’l Meteor count done each year. Families loved how he shared his knowledge, or let people look through his

beloved telescope used to teach students at USD. I have that telescope now and occasionally bring it out in the backyard. Still don’t know how they dragged it up to the top of Slagle Hall at night. He also developed content for a video game called, “Where in Space is Carmen San Diego?”

If you’re familiar with his column, I hope that you learned something so that each month you make the time to go outside to look up. Find a space that let’s you explore the night skies, appreciate the constellations, revel in the moon, see a passing satellite or the Int’l Space Station. When you see a shooting star, think of him, make a wish for something good to happen. He’d say, “We need more of that!” Thank you to all who read his column and supported him while he did so. The next time you see something amazing in the skies, think of him creating his own special star party just for his favorite readers of Twist & Shout. (Rev. Robert L. Adams, 1929-2020)

The Iowa Rock & Roll Music Association

In 1996 Tom Tourville and John Senn co-founded the Iowa Rock n’ Roll Music Association and it’s Hall of Fame. This past Summer it celebrated its 25th Anniversary. The first year of activity was in 1997 was when it held its first Hall of Fame Induction and concert at the Roof Garden Ballroom at Okoboji, Iowa.

The concept for the Iowa Rock n’ Roll Music Association was simple, form a nonprofit to recognize and honor Iowa based musicians, music industry support partners and businesses and induct them into an established Iowa based Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. The single most important goal for the newly formed group was to honor the music industry pioneers and artists that had entertained so many since rock and roll started in Iowa.

Fort Dodge, IA attorney, Charles Walker volunteered to help create the nonprofit status for the new organization. Fort Dodge residents Larry Lind and Tom Bethke joined the newly formed Board of Directors.

In 2019 Arnolds Park Amusement Park created plans for its new Maritime Museum that included space for the Iowa Rock n’ Roll Music Association’s Hall of Fame and museum.

The additional space and technology allowed for the creation of a world class museum.

It has been 25 years of music, memories and honoring Iowa’s rock and roll heroes since the birth of this amazing music organization.

In 2003 Twist & Shout was inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Music Association’s Hall of Fame for journalism excellence in telling the stories of Iowa music through “A Look Back.”

Tom Tourville

My involvement with Twist & Shout began with issue #2 when Twist & Shout’s founder, Dave Haldin, called and asked if I would be willing to do a column for his new publication. The answer was a quick yes. I always appreciated Dave’s invitation to be a part of Twist & Shout. In addition to Dave, I’ve had the opportunity to work with two fabulous editors/coordinators for the paper with Anne Kersten and Nick Manwarren.

In 2003 Twist & Shout was inducted into the Iowa Rock n Roll Music Association’s Hall of Fame as an inductee based upon journalism and it’s “A Look Back” column. That was an incredible honor. To this day they have been the only newspaper/column to receive this award.

One of the most exciting parts of writing a monthly column is to look back and discover how much music entertainment Fort Dodge has had and is still producing. The community has had an amazing entertainment venue such as the Laramar, Pla Mor and Twilight Ballroom, it has been a source of countless columns.

Lastly, thanks to all the readers of “A Look Back” for their supportive comments and suggestions for future stories. There are many more stories to share with the readers of Twist & Shout. Without your support of this publication and its advertisers, there would be not be “A Look Back.”

a look back HOT JAM

ROCKIN’ AT THE TWILIGHT WITH

The year was 1979 and music nationally was squarely po sitioned with power pop like “My Sharona” by the Knack, or disco with the likes of the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.”

The music was also changing at our local ballrooms. No longer did the horn and show bands fill the floor, now it was the music of power pop with the likes of Hot Jam or Vixen, nostalgia rock with the Rockin’ Hollywoods, Whitesidewalls and the Cleavettes, or harder rock with Headstone or Straight-Up.

Our Twilight Ballroom had the right music booking mix with these music styles and their bookings. Artists such as, Straight-Up, Headstone, Hot Jam, the Cleavettes, Jes se Brady, and Fairchild, filled the ballroom and the dance

One of my all-time favorite groups was Marshalltown, Iowa’s Hot Jam. I always found this band to have the sound, the look and they always presented themselves in such a professional way. A just flat-out impressive band. Maybe that is why our Twilight Ballroom booked Hot Jam numerous times. Hot Jam really drew the crowds!

The groups formation happened in late 1970. The orig inal line-up consisted of Dave Hofer-bass, Alan Lunddrums and guitarist Roger Mathies. In 1977 Mathies left the group and he was replaced by Mason City, Iowa gui tarist, Jerry Carberry. For most of their career, they per formed as a power trio. It was common for the band to get asked, “You have only three guys making that much sound?”

Hot Jam performed at ballrooms and venues all across Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois and the Dakotas. Because of their non-stop touring schedule, they per formed with such artists as: Heart, Trooper, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Rick Derringer, Head East, Browns ville Station, Starbuck and Star Castle. Impressive.

The band had a prolific recording career. In 1975 they would enter the Kajac Recording Studios of Carlisle, Iowa and record the great double sider of “Tobacco Road” backed with” Stormy Monday” on Sun Dyl Re cords (#101). This record sold really well and got sig nificant air play across Iowa and Minnesota. In 1976 they followed that release up with “I Love To Boogie”/ ”I Don’t Have To Sing The Blues,” also on Sun Dyl Re cords (#102). Their third record release was in 1978 with

In 1979 they entered Earth City Recording Studios in Earth City, Missouri and recorded enough material for a full-length LP. Famed producer Greg Riker took the project on, but landing a major label was not to be. Later in ‘79, the band’s manager absconded with most of their savings. With the money gone, there was nothing left to support their touring. This was the beginning of the end. It was soon after that the band called it quits and disbanded.

But, the best was yet to come, as they learned they would be inducted in the Iowa Rock & Roll Music Association’s Hall of Fame. The best part of this honor was the fact that the band would re-form and play for the IRRMA’s con cert on Labor Day of 2021. It was an amazing set. One of the best I had heard in a while.

As I noted earlier, the band was booked into Fort Dodge’s Twilight Ballroom several times. I hope many of you had the chance to be at one of those shows and rock out with Hot Jam live at the Twilight.

Michael A. Baird, MFA

Age: 45

Hometown:

I… am not quite sure what to say in response to where my hometown would be. I suppose, statistically, I would have to say “Cape Girardeau, MO.” I was not born there, but I lived there for the most years so far.

Profession: Instructor of Art, Iowa Central Community College

Preferred Artistic Medium:

As a sculptor, I am diametrically opposed to choosing any one medium. Sculptors, I find, tend to believe that any medium that will do the job best is the best answer. But I do rather like using various plastics, furs, and animal remains. I am also a graphic designer and illustrator, so I use a lot of soft pastels and PhotoShop to make things, too.

In what ways were you exposed to art and culture as a child? :

Both of my parents were artists throughout my young life. I grew up under the folding table my folks brought to wood carving shows. My father was a very talented wood carver and my mother was a painter and various other art media, too. Both of my parents were educators, too, so they have always encouraged me to explore whatever academic field of interest I desired. But more specifically, I would say that some of the most influential aspects of my childhood art exposure would be looking through art books from my parents’ bookshelves, watching my parents make artwork, and the day I was Stan Lee’s personal assistant. (That’s the kind of day that sticks with a guy.)

Tell us about your educational path through college.

I graduated from a community college in Neosho, Missouri, Crowder College, with an associate’s degree in art. I went on to obtain an MFA (sculpture) from Southeast Missouri State University before I earned my terminal degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. It took me approximately twelve years to complete my higher education due to working through college as a sign-maker.

What do you most enjoy about being an art instructor?

I love helping students find those “aha” moments. Those moments when a student who was struggling with some aspect of their project finally has a revelation. Seeing the excitement when a student finally overcomes their struggles and suddenly begins to develop their skills much more quickly than before is one of the best feelings in the world.

What inspires you?

Creativity. It may sound strange, but that is the core of all things that inspire me. I have become a bit of a creativity snob, though. If something isn’t particularly creative, like zombies, I am not terribly interested. But if something is wildly creative, like the snallygaster, I cannot get enough. I study folklore creatures from around the world, but predominantly those in American folklore. I have found that the most intensely creative thing in all human experience is monsters. I could talk all day about what the word “monster” means and how it is the pinnacle of creativity, but for the sake of brevity, I can safely say that monsters are the coolest thing ever.

What most appealed to you about Fort Dodge, when you were considering your move?

I did not know Fort Dodge existed before I found the job listing at Iowa Central, honestly. I grew up visiting my grandparents in Ames nearly every year, but I never knew much about any other cities in Iowa. But once I did my research into all the jobs that were looking for art instructors, Fort Dodge immediately rose to the top. But as an educator, I have to admit that the selling points that sold me on coming to Fort Dodge was Iowa Central itself. I was immediately impressed with the college and could tell that it was not only a great place to work but a great place for students to succeed and proceed in their education.

What is something you’d like us to know about you?

I love monsters. I know that is a shocking revelation for anyone who has made it this far through my interview.

Favorite Artist & Why?

Ugh! This is always the worst question for me. Anyone who makes artwork is inspired by a myriad of artists who could be considered favorites. If I were forced to answer this with one name, it could be different each time I answer. So,… I’ll go with Jim Lee, the iconic comic book artist, today.

Favorite Food?

Rhubarb pie. Not strawberry rhubarb, mind you. No, no. I want none of that ruining my rhubarb’s bite, thank you very much.

Favorite Musician?

Oh, geez. This is the same case as “favorite artist.” So today I will choose The Midnight, a synthwave band I have been particularly fond of for quite a while.

What do you most enjoy about being a musician?

Being a musician, I think, is one of the greatest feelings you could have. Creating music, learning music, playing live shows, I mean it almost gives you this euphoric feeling. Being a musician means you express your creativity and emotions in a way that anyone can hear it, whether it be through an instrument, or your voice. It’s incredible.

Tell us about the gig you’ve played that has left the biggest impression?

The gig that’s left the biggest impression? Hm. For me, Honestly it was quite recent. The band I’m in, Aka The Tank Anthony Band, recently played at the downtown country jam, which is an event put on by shellabration. I have to say, playing that show, with the amazing musicians and people I play with made me feel on top of the world in that moment.

What inspires you?

What inspires me? Creative people. People that want to inspire the world through their art. The thing I love about music, or art, is that they can bring all people, from any ethnicity or believe system, together. Not many things can do that. I find that inspiring.

Age: 18

Hometown: Fort Dodge Area of Artistic Interest: Music, Songwriting, Sound Production

What are your plans after Iowa Central Community College?

After Iowa Central, It’s been my dream for a while to go to the Berklee College of Music. The things they offer there, I mean it would perfect for a career in the music scene. Plus, the music scene in general around Boston, is quite nice.

Something I’d like the people to know about me? I’m not sure at this point besides what I’ve mentioned. I can make a mean

Favorite artist/musician Honestly, I would say Victor Wooten. He’s not only an incredible bass player and composer, but he also is a very inspiring and wise person, and finds ways to relate

Favorite food? What a way to end! haha. I’d say a good chicken

In what ways were you exposed to art and culture as a child?

I was first exposed to music because of my Grandfather, Tracy Ernst. In fact, he was the one that made me become passionate about music in the first place. So my main exposure to music was through him showing me all kinds of music, and watching him play live shows when I was growing up. I owe it all to him.

How did you learn to play bass? What other instruments do you play?

I learned how to play bass about 5 years ago. When I began, I pretty much just learned the instrument via several YouTube videos, and trying my best to learn difficult basslines. I definitely tried to go way over my skill level when it came to learning techniques but, I think it worked out. Trying to learn hard songs made me more determined. I also play drums and guitar, but bass is definitely my main focus.

Your guide to a planning a night out

You’ve checked your phone and your socials are blowing up with people interested in getting together. There’s a lot of ideas flowing, from pre-gaming options to references to the newest restaurant that just opened in town. It’s exciting, but also a tad overwhelming. While a night out with friends can happen organically, for a truly enjoyable and memorable time, it’s wise to put some forethought into planning the night. But what does one do when there are several people with their own ideas of how the night should go? Groups can heed these suggestions.

Keep it intimate

It’s great to be part of a large crowd having fun, but the more cooks in the kitchen, the more difficult it may be to solidify plans. Stick to a core group of six to eight people. This reduces the likelihood that anyone will get separated from the group, and it’s easier to coordinate with everyone involved.

Adopt a leader

It’s a tough job, but someone has to step up and organize the night. You probably know someone in your group of friends who is excellent at making plans or knows all of the top spots in town (it may be you). Enlist that person to help narrow down the possibilities and come up with a road map of what the night will look like. This includes choosing a time to meet, the guest list and how everyone is getting there and back.

Choose the location

Select a location that is convenient for most, if not all, of the people in the group. This could be a bar or club close to work, if coworkers are getting together, or a location in a neighborhood where everyone lives. An accessible spot, such as one that has public transportation or is near major roadways, also will be convenient. Be sure that everyone knows the exact address.

Create a group chat

Organize a chat group so that details can be shared collectively. Also, if someone is running late or hits a snag finding the place, it will be easier to reach out and offer assistance.

Focus on the activity

Think about gearing the night out around an activity rather than just eating and drinking. Head to a driving range, an escape room, a paint and sip shop, or a hatchet-throwing business. Less focus on imbibing can make for a safer evening for all. These tips can help when planning a night out.

Legends and Lattes

A cozy, slice of life fantasy with all the adventure of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign and the heartfelt warmth of a cup of coffee. Read the book which TikTok made so famous by starting a new sub-genre of fantasy called “cozy” fantasy and resulted in the independently published author being picked up by Tor Books.

After finishing her last quest, Viv hangs up her sword and works to open her own coffee shop in a city where coffee is an unknown. As she works towards her goal, Viv finds others along her way to build and spread the word of the most delicious drink. Rivals, new and old, stand in her way. Follow along as Viv discovers what it means to set aside the sword and start a new life.

From start to finish, this book defines the idea of cozy. The main character, Viv, is an orc warrior who wants to settle after decades of fighting and feels she has reached the end of her luck on the battlefield. Viv is relatable as she struggles with changing how she faces obstacles she once would have swung a sword at. Each person Viv meets and is drawn into her world is well defined by the author and leaves traces of delight at their experiences in the book, from a waitress who want to find a new passion to a builder who mistrusts to a baker who creates magical pastries to a cat whose comings and goings are as mysterious as their origins.

This novel will leave you wanting to reread it again for the first time.
