JEREMY ANNEAR In 2016, Jeremy Annear celebrated twenty years of exhibiting with Messum’s. It has been an exciting partnership as we have watched Jeremy’s style evolve and develop, moving from a distinctly painterly and expressive style in his early work to an approach that is increasingly geometric and linear. Following the artist’s successful 2018 show at 28 Cork Street, Messum’s were approached by David Linley to showcase Jeremy’s paintings alongside the furniture and design at Linley’s Pimlico showrooms. The combination of Jeremy’s graceful compositions hanging alongside the bespoke furniture has been well received and can be seen until the end of December. Another of Jeremy’s recent accolades is accepting the prestigious Judge’s Invitation to appear at the ING Discerning Eye exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London this November.

JAKE ATTREE Jake Attree’s work hints at the inner life of his figures and his city; the high impasto surfaces of his studies of York Minster draw the viewer in like a garden maze, leading us down medieval streets and suggesting a city so ancient that we will never fully know it. His oil pastels appear more translucent, like film stills shot in diffused light. These images seem to be frozen in time, hinting at a deeper meaning beneath every face and landscape, which we can only begin to grasp if the world slows down around us. Jake has developed a highly individual technique, using a great density of paint, building up layers of impasto to an almost sculptural degreee. His most recent work was selected for Messum’s ‘Elemental North’ show, alongside David Blackburn and Maxwell Doig.

PETER BROWN Messum’s regular exhibitions of Peter Brown’s work follow him on his journeys through England as he explores the spirit of the place, lives lived and how we oursleves behave in this country of ours. His paintings carry a lightness of observation, a spontaneity of engagement, while being quietly rooted in a great English landscape tradition. Pete’s journeys always lead him back to London and regularly through our gallery door in Cork Street. But it is never long before he is back out, setting up his easel and exacting his impressions of a bustling community going about its business in all weathers.

LIONEL BULMER Although enjoying solos shows during his lifetime at London’s New Art Centre and the Galeria Internationale in Portugal and for a time a fixture of any NEAC exhibition or RA summer show, Bulmer left much of his prolific work unseen. Since his death in 1992 and at the request of his artist wife, Margaret Green, Messum’s have represented the Estate of Lionel Bulmer. We are very proud to have been a catalyst in the movement that has recognised the contribution this artist has made to 20th Century British art and his pre-eminant position within it. Through regular exhibitions and constant critical re-appraisal we share his work with an ever-growing audience. ‘Lionel Bulmer & Margaret Green: A Painting Partnership’ can be seen at Messum’s until 30th Nov 2018. 13

SIMON CARTER Simon’s first appearances at Cork Street were in the popular and enduring mixed exhibitions ‘East Coast Influences’. For him, the East Coast Influence comprises seven or so miles of Essex Coastline centered on his home town of Frinton-on-Sea. As he says in the introduction to his 2011 exhibition catalogue ‘It is a place I have grown up with. It is not dramatic or particularly picturesque but a place where agriculture gradually gives way to grazing marsh and golf links, to saltings and mud flats, low scrubby cliffs and then the beach’. These, apparently, lowly surroundings give way to magnificent and dramatic depictions of the sky meeting the land and sea which have garnered Simon critical acclaim with collectors in both the UK and abroad.

JAMES DODDS Once a shipwright, Dodds’ paintings illustrate the anatomy of boats, revealing the materials and curves that underwrite the finished vessel. This aspect of his work is explored in Emily Harris’ film for Classic Yacht TV, ‘Shaped by the Sea’, which draws many parallels between the art of the boat builder and the painter of boats. Many of James’s paintings are monumental in scale, so we are delighted to be able to include two little ‘gems’ in our December exhibition. These small oil paintings provide the opportunity to enjoy Jame’s work on a more intimate scale. The exhibition also includes a selection of his exquisitely detailed linocut prints. In the words of Emily Harris they ‘speak of his raging attention to detail, joy in obsession and the pursuit of perfection within craft’.

MAXWELL DOIG Following a very successful exhibition at Cork Street in October 2018 of Max’s extraordinary paintings, we are delighted to have the opportunity to show his skills as a printmaker. Although the monotype is considered a ‘print’, the term is perhaps a little misleading as it creates only one, unique impression. The artist works very quickly, usually on a polished plate, such as glass or metal, which has been painted with ink. It is then an art of reduction as the artist wipes away the ink to form the image. The composition must be completed before the ink dries so that it can be transferred to paper, creating a unique image. Doig is also very much concerned with - and located in - place. Most of hus current work focusses on his local landscape around Yorkshire and the buildings and allotments that characterise the neighbourhood. 24

LAURENCE EDWARDS One of the few sculptors who casts his own work, Laurence Edwards is fascinated by human anatomy and the metamorphosis of form and matter that governs the lost-wax process. His sculptures express the raw liquid power of bronze, its versatility, mass and evolution, and the variety of process marks he retains tell the story of how and why each work came to be. President of the Royal Academy, Christopher Le Brun, recently praised Edwards specifically for his ability to blur the boundaries between man and nature. Laurence works on both the monumental and the intimate scale, illustrating his diversity as a sculptor. The small standing and crouching men have appealed to a wide audience and we are delighted to include some of the finest examples in this show. 28 The Patriarch bronze, ed of 15 24 x 9 x 9 cm (9½ x 3½ x 3½ in) £2,340.00 29 Feel the Heat I bronze, ed. of 15 14 x 13 x 9 cm (5½ x 5 x 3½ in) £2,340.00 30 Feel the Heat II bronze, ed. of 15 8 x 12 x 9 cm (7 x 4¾ x D 3½ in) £2,340.00 31 Brooding Man III bronze, ed. of 15 24 x 9 x 9 cm (9½ x W 3½ x D 3½ in) £2,340.00

DEREK GARDNER
(1914 - 2007)
Born on the eve of World War One, into an era when Britannia still ruled the waves, Derek Gardner was the grand old man of British marine painting, the latest in a line of great talents spanning more than three centuries, from the Van de Veldes via Samuel Scott and Nicholas Pocock, William Lionel Wyllie and Montague Dawson. As one naval veteran saluting another, Gardner marked the recent bi-centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar with a bestselling book and sell-out exhibition in our Cork Street gallery – both entitled ‘Nelson’s Ships’. Here was a record in oil and watercolour, and also in the artist’s words, of every vessel on which Horatio Nelson ever served, from his enlistment as a midshipman on his uncle’s ship at the age of 12 to his death at the decisive naval battle against Napoleon 35 years later.

ANTHONY GILBERT (d.1995) Anthony Gilbert was one of the last great designers and illustrators of the golden age of British advertising. He trained at Goldsmith’s College in London, and in 1943, joined the London office of the now legendary firm of J Walter Thompson, where he would work for the next twenty-five years. Gilbert contributed to some of the most high profile advertising campaigns of the post-war era, which included his designs for Rowntree’s, Horlick’s and Rose’s Lime Juice, the most enduring of which was his rococo mantel clock for After Eight mints, which is still used by Nestle. His work graced The Strand, Lilliput, House & Garden, Radio Times, and, not least, Vogue, for whom he was king of patterned and painted ladies. 35 Lady in buttoned Dress beside a Gentleman wash off 27 x 13 cm (10½ x 5 in) £1,950.00 36 Patterned Lady with Beige Hair pencil & wash 24 x 12 cm (9½ x 4¾ in) £2,250.00 37 Patterned Lady with Apple mixed media 24 x 15 cm (9½ x 6 in) £2,450.00 38 Still Life gouache 10 x 14 cm (3¾ x 5½ in) £1,850.00 39 Still Life gouache 25 x 17 cm (10 x 6 in) £1,850.00

MARGARET GREEN
(1925 - 2003)
When Margaret Green contacted the gallery after her artist husband Lionel Bulmer’s death in 1992 we had little idea of the amazing output that these two artists had achieved in a lifetime of painting partnership. Unique in that respect alone their, paintings also leave a colourful survey of Post-War Britain moving towards sunlit pictures of beach holidays spent on the Suffolk Coast. Margaret’s early paintings were small ‘cabinet’ paintings with a certain intimacy about them. As time progressed and when painting by the sea or along the Blyth estuary, she emerged as an artist of assured techniques and ambitions. Her acutely observed pictures were exhibited at the Royal Academy with the London Group, as well as with the NEAC.

PHILIP HICKS Since 1990 when Philip Hicks moved from London to Oxfordshire, he has worked in a mainly figurative manner, but in the 1970s and 80s his style was much more abstract. More recently he has concentrated on bringing together these two sides of his work, forging a synthesis which has resulted in a new personal and very recognisable style. It allows him to deploy his subject matter with great freedom across the canvas, and his gift as a colourist, together with his love of paint, reveal themselves more strongly than ever. Philip Hicks’ work has been widely appreciated with over thirty successful solo gallery shows here and abroad to his credit. He is past chairman and vice-President of the Artists’ General Benevolent Institution.

ROSE HILTON Hilton’s work exhibits an on-going quest for new ways to express her distinct balance of tone, colour and bold geometry. Her new work continues to reflect her deep admiration of Bonnard, Braque and Matisse and evokes the rhythmic abstraction of her late husband Roger Hilton, which re-emerges in her paintings with a distinctly feminine energy. Tate St Ives honoured Rose Hilton with a retrospective in 2008. They chose paintings that reflect the increasingly abstract nature of Hilton’s work, though she rarely abandons figuration entirely. Best known for her sensual nudes and lusciously coloured interiors, there were also numerous landscapes on display, in which the leap towards abstraction is perhaps most apparent.

BRIAN HORTON Now Messum’s most long-standing artist, Horton is nationally recognised as one of Britain’s true ‘romantic’ landscape painters. His eye for the mystical is rooted in Samuel Palmer, but also extends into the traditions of Paul and John Nash. There is something visionary in his use of pure colour and the way birds, boats and flowers appear to grow out of his softly shifting hills, skies and shores. His landscapes are akin to watching fast-motion footage of a flower bloom or a seedpod burst: they are natural, but still a bit magical.

ROBINA JACK “The move and the change of media have been transforming, my work is still driven by pattern and colour and still feels incomplete without a patterned border, but I am no longer constrained by glass’s limitations clay is endlessly malleable. Using my own moulds, I make earthenware pots which I decorate in coloured slips and transparent glazes with animals, plants and coastal motifs.” The decades Robina Jack spent creating stained glass panels are clearly evident in her ceramics and painted wooden works which she decorates with plants and animals and bright swirls of colour. 55

MARTYN R MACKRILL What makes one artist stand out from any other is their ability to make the subject of their choice live. You are not a distant spectator in Martyn’s work, in fact you are invited to be there and share the moment with him. You can sense the press of the wind on canvas as things power-up and you can tell the vessels are performing at their best, given the weather conditions in which he portrays them. Martyn Mackrill is Honorary Painter to the Royal Yacht Squardron and the Royal Thames Yacht Club “Martyn Mackrill is now accepted among the foremost marine artists of his generation. For the sake of all who love the sea as she really is, may his brushes long continue to weave their magic amidst the ever-changing waves.” Tom Cunliffe. Sailor, Author and Broadcaster

BRIDGET McCRUM McCrum’s work is a potent fusion of the ancient with the modern. She works primarily in stone, from which some pieces are also cast in bronze. Initially influenced by archaeological finds and by the work of Brancusi, Hepworth and Moore, her sculpture also contains oblique references to the landscape and fauna around her homes in Devon and Gozo. The basis of her work is a lyrical abstraction of living forms, a process after which only the primary elements of her animals and birds remain identifiable. Bridget’s pre-eminent position within modern and contemporary British sculpture has long been recognised and this year she was invited to select contributors to the prestigious ING Discerning Eye exhibition. 64 Metamorphosis carrara marble 32 x 36 x 5 cm (12½ x 14 x 2 in) £11,820.00 65 Cosmos maquette bronze, an ed. of 12 15 x 4 x 35 cm (6 x 1½ x 13¾ in) £5,820.00 66 Spirit Bird Maquette II bronze, ed. of 9 52 x 53 x 10 cm (20½ x 21 x 3¾ in) £6,600.00 67 Sea Bird bronze, ed. of 9 27 x 23 x 20 cm (10 1⁄2 x 9 x 8 in) £5,820.00

HUGH MCKENZIE
(1909 - 2005)
“Watercolourist who created a record of the London streets” was the headline in The Independent’s obituary of the artist when he died in 2005. Messum’s have been representing his Estate since then. Hugh McKenzie’s watercolour drawings record the changing face of London during a period of immense architectural upheaval, his knowledge of architecture - by all accounts formidable - was born not of dry historical study but came from his years of experience working with the fire service, which he did throughout the war years and for some time beyond. 68 Interior of a Museum oil on board 15 x 20 cm (5 7⁄8 x 7 5⁄8 in) £1,180.00 69 First World War Memorial, Threadneedle Street oil on board 26 x 18 cm (10 x 7 1⁄8 in) £1,540.00 70 The Kenthouse Cafe oil on board 16 x 21 cm (6 1⁄4 x 8 3⁄8 in) £1,180.00 71 Parade of Shops oil on board 19 x 29 cm (7 1⁄2 x 11 1⁄2 in) £1,540.00

NICOLAS MORETON A superb sculptor, Nicolas Moreton was born in Watford, studied at the Nene College of Art and Design in Northampton, then at Wolverhampton Polytechnic graduating in 1985. Moreton was elected a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 1995. One senses though, that however important his professional training may have been in his development, events in his personal life probably had a deeper effect on him. Particularly the birth of his son Jacob Robert in 2001. This inspired a whole collection of sculptures featuring infants.

Neasom’s watercolours are hugely popular with collectors, and examples are today in the collections of Her Majesty the Queen, the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, the Royal Watercolour Society and the West Midlands Arts Council, among others. Indeed, he was commissioned by the Royal Watercolour Society to paint pictures as a 70th birthday gift for Queen Elizabeth II and a 100th birthday gift for Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Messum’s have represented Neasom’s Estate since his death in 1992 and continue to hold regular exhibitions exploring these hugely appealing and enduring watercolours.

JULIUS OLSSON
(1864-1942)
A larger than life character, described by The Studio as “a big man with a big heart, who paints big pictures with big brushes in a big studio,” Julius Olsson was pivotal to the second wave of artistic immigration to St. Ives in the 1890s.[1] His work was first accepted at the Royal Academy in 1890, and he joined the New English Art Club in 1891. With little or no formal artistic training himself, he set up studio on Porthmeor beach, St. Ives. This became, in 1895, the premises for the School of Landscape and Marine Painting. Teaching in conjunction with Louis Grier and Algernon Talmage, Olsson soon built a reputation that attracted aspiring marine painters from far-afield, including Mary McCrossan and the Australian, Richard Hayley Lever.

KEN SMITH With Messum’s second major show of Ken Smith’s sculpture opening in early January 2019, we are delighted to be able to offer examples from his studio prior to then. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue exploring Ken’s new work and will include scholarly essays by author and critic David Boyd Haycock and critic Phillip Vann. The Art of Giving provides an opportunity for collectors to acquire key early examples of Ken’s work which is based around the human form, although often in an abstract manner.

GUY TAPLIN Taplin’s bird sculptures embody our longed for harmony with the natural world, his obsession with birds extends beyond their beauty to their endurance, intuition and symbolic loyalty. Mostly shorebirds of various species, each bird is composed to capture their specific habits and character. His simplified, stylised forms seem to breathe each bird’s very essence. Sculpted from found driftwood, which he forages from coasts and estuaries around the world, Taplin’s birds are therefore enriched by previous lives. Weathered by time and the elements, each piece of wood bears marks that enhance his design, suggesting the outline of a wing or layers of plumage. 87 Bullfinches carved and painted driftwood H 33 x W 26 x D 10 cm (H 13 x W 10 1⁄4 x D 3 7⁄8 in) £4,200.00 88 Ring Ouzels carved and painted driftwood H 30 x W 44 x D 15 cm (H 11 3⁄4 x W 17 3⁄8 x D 5 7⁄8 in) £4,380.00 89

NANCY ROSE TAPLIN Guy and Robina Jack’s daughter Nancy Taplin also works as an artist. She has chosen to paint on ledgers, old account books and discarded journals with beautifully described images of birds, using tiny strokes of gouache, harking back to more ancient traditons of manuscript art and the age of velum. “The books themselves have a huge influence on what I paint on them, I think the process of deciding what to paint on a particular book is the point at which my textile training has the biggest impact”.

MICHAEL UPTON
(1938–2002)
One of the first truly conceptual artists to emerge from the RCA and the RA schools during the 1960s, Upton was known for both his performance work and his boldly composed gouaches. In his last decades, pure colour entered Upton’s work when he moved to Cornwall and renewed his friendship with Rose Hilton. Upton’s small, refined studies of time and place illustrate the bridge between PostWar British art and the later challenges set by the St Ives group. As such, his paintings enhance any collector’s enjoyment and understanding of modern and contemporary British painting. 96
