Magí Puig Palou, La Segarra, b. 1966 Working recognisably within contemporary realism, Magí Puig has managed to create his own pictorial language by challenging the idea of visual reality itself. Inspired by his travels, his various views – Venice, Havana, the markets and beaches of Senegal and Vietnam – play with visual perception, and he shifts his perspective from a bird’s to a worm’s eye, depending upon his subject. Puig sets principal elements of each painting against rich, uniform surfaces that represent sky, sand or water. He often uses close-ups to underscore movement and energy, leaving more static elements to emerge dramatically from bright planes of primary colour. In his beach and canal scenes, light and water merge into a bright and impenetrable atmosphere, like a shimmering haze. In other works, he confines light effects to the foreground, creating a sense of detachment and mystery.

His figures are often women, somewhat idealized, solitary, and always bathed in intense Mediterranean light. More recently, he includes children, both asleep and at play, caught in poses that appear to lock them in memory. In his Venice scenes the human element is conspicuous by its absence; in his beach and fairground scenes, figures appear approximate, or practically in ‘zoom’ focus. But all of his plays at perspective are enhanced by his flat pictorial style composed of backlit, almost cut- out forms, and intensely coloured backgrounds, all of which make his figures appear distinct, even weightless. Puig graduated from the University of Sant Jordi, Barcelona with a degree in Fine Art, followed by further studies at the Winchester School of Art. In addition to his painting he is an award-winning graphic artist. He has exhibited with Sala Parés since 2003, and at galleries in Madrid, London, Paris, Geneva, Venice, New York, and Toronto. cover image
