About the METaL Project Materials considerations are frequently at the heart of engineering projects and manufacturing issues. The primary objectives of METaL are to provide work based training to employees whose day to day activities require some level of metallurgical and materials knowledge. The project can offer a broad range of training subjects from metallurgy and manufacturing to corrosion and coatings. Courses can also be tailored to reflect the needs of specific industries and industrial processes. Through the increased knowledge, improvements and enhancements can be achieved to processes and productivity in the engineering and manufacturing workforce. METaL is part of Swansea University’s College of Engineering that has over 50 years’ experience in materials engineering. As well as being one of the UK’s leading centres for materials teaching and research, materials at Swansea consistently features as one of the top UK departments in the Times Good University Guide. METaL can provide training for groups in the workplace or groups and individuals at our facility in Baglan Energy Park. METaL will also work with industry to develop relevant courses for today’s workforce and embed them in the University’s module catalogue ensuring course content is available beyond the lifetime of this project.

Benefits of the METaL Project • Fully or partially funded courses (depending on eligibility) • Gives the science behind the process • Improved knowledge of materials properties and processes can lead to improved work outputs through; • Improved problem solving • Improved continuous improvement • Degree standard qualifications • Work Based Learning – a great way to achieve CPD requirements • Learning delivered in a modern way using eLearning to aid understanding • Personal Development – Improving your knowledge on materials and metallurgy • Improved chance of career progression through increased technical knowledge • Learn while you earn – up-skilling those already in private sector employment • Courses can be tailored to reflect the customer’s needs and shop floor technology • Flexible courses to meet your staffing needs • Staff Investment

“METaL courses provide the opportunity to develop an understanding of materials issues that exist within an engineering environment.’ Dr. Dave Mumford, Senior Metallurgist, Harris Pye UK Ltd

Typical Courses These are just a sample of our most popular courses. Courses can also be tailored to satisfy your companies/individual needs.

Introduction to Materials Course aims To provide a core understanding of materials engineering and materials properties. The delegate will come away with an understanding of materials structure and properties and relate basic scientific principles to engineering applications. Course content Materials selection, mechanical behaviour of materials, atomic structure and bonding, crystal structure of solids, microstructure of metals and alloys and deformation processes in crystals

Corrosion and Coatings Technology Course aims To provide the attendee with the key understanding of corrosion and the role coatings technology plays in preventing it. This will include an appreciation of metallic and organic coatings, their application and also their defects as well as the corrosion mechanisms they are designed to stop. Course content Introduction to corrosion, corrosion mechanisms, galvanic corrosion protection, applied current protection, metallic barrier coatings, Organic barrier coatings and paint technology

Manufacturing Technology Course aims To give an introduction to the world of manufacturing and manufacturing processes that are commonly used. The course will provide an insight into the technical aspects of manufacturing and highlight processing considerations and common defects. Course content Casting, powder metallurgy, forming, forging, machining, surface treatments, joining and NDT

“I am delighted with the whole process, I now look forward to seeing how this knowledge is put to use in the workplace to the benefit of the company and the delegates’ Brian Edy, Technical development manager & Tata METaL champion

Eligibility The METaL project, part of the Work Based Learning scheme, has been made possible by the EU’s Convergence European Social Fund (ESF) through the Welsh Government. If you are in private sector employment and live and/or work within the convergence area (West Wales and the Valleys, see map), you may be entitled to a fully or partly-funded place on the course (conditions apply). If you do not fall within the above criteria please contact us to discuss course options. Delegates do not need to have any formal qualifications but as the course is degree level they should be able to engage on a technical course. As a general recommendation we suggest that all delegates attend introduction to materials to provide foundation knowledge prior to attending other courses.

“METaL - my link to the world of materials’ Heather, Tata Steel

“The course was brilliant, very interactive. ’ Michael, Harris Pye UK Ltd
