INVESTIGATION RESULTS
The territory of the current Promprylad Plant Relevancy of the topic citywide was and is quite significant. It continues to affect the urban landscape, which is mental, social, and economic. Despite the closeness of Promprylad as an industrial object, its influence is clearly considerable and noticeable even outside the plant. We see it in the context of the space: on Sakharov Street opposite the plant there are 9-storeyed buildings, built by the plant and where its former employees or their relatives live. We also mentioned the social dimension: thousands of people, which were united by the common space, life, intrafactory media, traditions, friendly or even family-related contacts, worked at the plant. Currently, in the process of implementation of the project “Promprylad.Renovation” the issue of connections at the “plant-district” level is especially actualized. In this context, there is a need to analyse the risks, such as the possible absence / lack of the content in the project “Promprylad.Renovation” from Ivano–Frankivsk. As we understood due to various investigations, including our own (sociological, historical, spatial), many citizens of Ivano-Frankivsk (and until recently, many participants of the laboratory) take the territory of Promprylad as the one where “there is no entrance.” But today, the project “Promprylad.Renovation” changes the philosophy of this location from closeness to openness, from accessibility to publicity. However, the space can function fully in a new way only through the user’s activity, so communication and interaction with the local population (one of the largest targeted audiences of the project) is of particular importance. It is important to inform the neighbours of the plant about: “Promprylad is open to you; you can come and see what happens there and what you can do there, or how we can jointly fulfill your idea.”

During the laboratory work, we decided to focus on the connections of the plant and project “Promprylad.Renovation” with the district at the community and space level. The workshop provided the investigation of the environment of the nearest territories of Promprylad with the analysis of their functional, spatial, infrastructural content and the level of openness / closure. It was also important to communicate with local residents, learn more about their needs, the perception of space of Promprylad and plans for its transformation. An interesting question for us was our role, the role of MetaLab, the urban community of the city, in the investigation of the interconnections between the parties (the project and the district) and the formation and development of a full-fledged communication between them.

FORMATION OF THE DISTRICT The filling of the plant space changed over time: now the plant occupies only the fourth part of the former territory (namely, the production occupies even less), the rest of the territory is given to various institutions (university, offices, residential complex, construction, frozen in the 1990s).

Promprylad neighbours community is 18,000 people plus almost 4,500 representatives of two local higher educational institutions (the Institute of the Arts of V. Stefanyk Subcarpathian National University and King Daniel University). We have grouped this great community in a certain way: local activists, elder people, teenagers, parents with children, athletes, musicians, business representatives, academic communities of local educational institutions, etc. In the perception of Promprylad the prevailing position is that it is a closed and inaccessible space.

HOW DOES THE DISTRICT WORK? In terms of functions and infrastructure, there is the biggest amount of commercial institutions and offices in Promprylad district. Then we have food stores, hotels and restaurants, medical and educational institutions, administrative institutions, production, sports complexes and public spaces, and finally cultural institutions. Commerce is dispersed in Promprylad district equally: along the perimeter and its roads. There is a certain lack of cultural space.

According to preliminary investigations of local communities, the latter have an inquiry to increase the public and spatial, cultural components and less amounts of educational components in the district. The representatives of the community would like to see a little more commercial, industrial, sports, hotel and restaurant establishments. The project “Promprylad. Renovation� with its suggestion generally corresponds to these inquiries, and some of them (such as offices, commerce, public spaces, production and education) are significantly superior. Of course, we are talking about the prospect, the gradual filling of Promprylad space with the corresponding functions until 2022.

BALANCE IMPORTANCE The functional content of Promprylad will definitely affect the nearby district and the pricing of real estate and its lease. It is plus and risk for the project and district at the same time, but it is an inevitable process. For example, with the advent of the pilot floor, other people, who want to open their offices within the premises of Promprylad, began to appear, which partially replaced the existing rehearsal bases of musicians at the plant. Therefore, it is important to monitor and respond to changes in the economic and social balance at the Promprylad Plant and in the district as well (I mean public space, prices for real estate and lease).�

We analysed the risks and thought about how to avoid them or how to react if they occur. One of them is the absence / lack of the content of the project “Promprylad. Renovation” from Ivano-Frankivsk. Among the suggestions of our team, there is a kind of experiment focused on the activation of lower democracy: to give free space for temporary free use of local organizations, communities, artists, students, makers, etc. for one or two years. Another ambiguous moment associated with the inevitable change in the district caused by the project “Promprylad. Renovation” is that, obviously, the project will increase its value, which someone may consider as a threat to gentrification. So, it is very important to take care of the preservation of social and economic balance. Examples of potential organizations that could “settle” on Promprylad or something like that: Caritas, a local branch of the Women’s Union, STAN, internally displaced persons, foreign students, students at the Institute of the Arts, manufactures, design studios, Junior Academy of Sciences, Ukrainian Academy of Leadership, underground hangouts, artists, musicians, touristsbackpacks, as well as festivals, hostels, initiatives, Dostupno.UA, eco-markets, flea markets and many others...

Working with the district space, we found out that Promprylad is located on the border of two city-planning typologies of the urban environment. In the north it is a rather structured closed corridor system of streets that lead to Promprylad (you can rarely pass through the inner courtyards); instead, in the south and east the building is dispersed and there are many open spaces, parts of which are interconnected, allowing you to reach the plant with help of many routes.

During the laboratory work, the team realized that the creators and representatives of the project “Promprylad. Renovation� could use the public spaces of the district to communicate with the local community. And at the same time, as a proactive subject, to use the capabilities of Promprylad and to influence the development of the district. It is in particular the disclosure of barriers, work with public spaces and navigation, district branding.

It was confirmed that Promprylad is understood by people as “a city in the city” as an enclave, closed space in physical and mental meanings, with its daily routine and spirit that differs from the rest part of the city, although it is a part of it. It testifies about the diversity of IvanoFrankivsk as a city and its environment.
“Promprylad. Renovation” can use functions and infrastructure of the district. Also, the project “Promprylad. Renovation” as a proactive and influential stakeholder community can have an impact on the development of infrastructure in the district: • • • •

LAKE AS AN EXAMPLE OF WORK WITH DISTRICT
In the south of Promprylad, near the school, there is a small lake among local residential houses. Nowadays it is a place where residents of neighbouring houses gather raspberries, different groups of people have rest and go for picnics, and young people sings songs to the guitar. This object and its future are of interest to the local residents, but a lot of them visit that place reluctantly due to lack of attention and impurity of space.

IDENTIFICATION OF LAKE SPACE
For a long time, we simply overwatched this location; we went for walks with friends and children, conducted events, excursions and even some training modules of our laboratory. In the first days I wanted to make changes: to improve, to build and to create something new. But after some time, there was a persuasive feeling that the place had a strong identity, which was formed by orchards, pier, bars, picnic area and closed cozy spaces under the willow. The first step to emphasize the uniqueness of this place was made by Zhanna Kadyrova. She installed a concrete sculpture of origami swan.

Our main idea for this place was to emphasize and improve the existing processes there. Fruit coffee house is made to reach the mellow fruit. Renewed piers have comfortable infrastructure. Picnic places and bonfires are comfortable and safe to use. The entrance and access to the lake are arranged to remove a barrier of visiting the lake for the less mobile groups or older generation.

One of the tasks in the laboratory was prototyping of projects. Taras Pastushchuk, a subject designer from Lviv, was involved into this stage, who inspired the whole team to design and prototype the mobile infrastructure (including rain covers and tents) for operators of the project “Promprylad. Renovation�, which would encourage them to move from Promprylad space to the district environment.

Raincoat
We created prototypes of rain covers and tents, which are subjects of urban mobile infrastructure. They lead us to the history of consumer goods, which once, in the late 80s, were manufactured at the Promprylad Plant such as umbrellas and tourist tents. Rain covers are also a mix of needs of the modern residents of Ivano-Frankivsk and residents of the pilot floor of “Promprylad. Renovation� and some answer to the tourist nature of the district. The multifunctional design we developed allows you to solve your personal needs: to stay dry during the rain, to use mobile devices with a transparent case, to turn rain cover instantly into a backpack. It is also a handy tool for the group of residents: the functionality allows you to combine a few rain covers, so we can get either a large blanket for rest or tent for rain protection.

“Swan Festival” In October, the team of the laboratory and the operators of the pilot floor of “Promprylad. Renovation” managed to visit the lake with a swan. The event united not only the participants of Promprylad but also neighbours and initiatives that are also interested in the future of this recreational zone: the children of neighbouring houses, active residents, frisbee team on the lawn nearby, the Lasertag Club (laser battles). All participants tidied the lake and the surrounding area up, built the hut and hammock, shared ideas and suggestions that they would like to see there, as well as told funny (and not very funny) stories related to this place. The representatives of the older generation told how the lake looked before, when it was just created. It turned out that the pier was a real pier, from where you could swim. Most residents want keep the identity of the location, while integrating the sculpture of Zhanna Kadyrova, which has become a true symbol of the lake. The only thing, in the opinion of the residents, which should be done is to tidy the lake up and connect the light. We met local activists who regularly tidy the area up, and some of them also bring fish there to clear the water. The representative of the city council was present at the event, who said that the lake was on the waiting list for landscaping, and its territory was planned to be transferred for the sports complex... Conclusion

We realized that “The Lake with the Swan” is a very important and unique location of local significance. Despite the plans of the city administration, we plan to work with the community around the lake and this object in the future.

CONCLUSIONS
We see the prospects for expanding communication, cooperation and interactions between the project “Promprylad. Renovation” and nearby district. The project can use the functions and infrastructure of the district, thus influencing its development, in particular, through the work with public spaces, district branding, educational and art interventions, common events with the neighbours. The operators of the project “Promprylad. Renovation” for this purpose would have to go outside into to the district. At the same time, for the further development of the project, it is important to study and take into account the needs and opinions of local residents regarding the future space of Promprylad. MetaLab and team of our laboratory can become a kind of connection point between two spaces and communities, which are the plant and the district. In this context it is necessary to analyse the opportunities and formats of future interaction and to consider the event program and risk prevention. The participants of the project “Promprylad. Renovation” have to offer local residents: educational, cultural and social activities. At the same time, it is necessary to remove a mental sign “Closed” from Promprylad, which exists in the minds of residents: it is important that the residents understand the value of this space for themselves, which is impossible without personal experience of interaction with it and the use of its functions. As a result, the ideas for common events and activities of the project operators may appear.

“Exploring the connections between the plant and the district, local residents and city were one of the objectives of my residence (along with critical fresh look at the project “Promprylad.Renovation”). I see a turning point in this topic: if we previously considered the district, residents and their needs from the position of the help, then during the laboratory work and discussions, a pragmatic question appeared as well: “what can a project get from the district?” This does not relieve the responsibility to consider the interests of all stackholders who can be influenced by the changes because of the project implementation. MetaLab research these problems.It is not about what is good or what is bad, but about trying to imagine the future and think about what you did not think about before. For example, during the investigation the team found the lake, which was a great resource for the Promprylad project and for its residents. It is very important because the interaction of the parties is more simple, understandable, and constant only under the condition that it is based on real interest”.

“The project “Promprylad. Renovation” definitely needs to go out to the district at least for communication, to explain to the local community what is happening there. Whether our laboratory should come to the an art director of creative residents and do something for them? No, agency Nammi, participant of we can only push them to changes, so that laboratory team the residents could offer to bring to life some ideas together. We should think about the ways how to involve people in order to be more engaged and aware that they are capable of implementing the changes. Now there is considerable indifference, perhaps through some prior experience of negative interaction or unsuccessful attempts to implement something. It is important for us to overcome this indifference and then to work with them. For me, personally, Promprylad is not only the location of the plant: the changes in the industrial zone due to the project “Promprylad. Renovation” should be radially reflected in the district and the city. It is about the fact that this space gives something to the city as a whole and is an example for the country and the world. But at the same time do not forget that some people live next to Promprylad across the street with their fears, vision, and different experience of interaction with authorities, neighbours, and participants of the project “Promprylad. Renovation” and with certain associations about the place. And today we should contribute to the formation of understanding of Promprylad.” 43
WHAT IS NEXT? STRATEGIC RECOMMENDATIONS
WORK WITH COMMUNITY • To identify and engage the activists to implement local needs and initiatives (leisure, providing of public amenities, culture). • Due to the cooperation between the team of the project “Promprylad.Renovation” and the residents of the district, to create a development centre for the district (economic / cultural / social). This collaborative process will affect the perception of the district and the identity of the community. • Through general events and projects, to introduce the residents, plant workers and promoters of the project “Promprylad. Renovation” to each other. It should help to understand the context, mutual empathy of the parties and more sensitive approach to the historical, cultural and social heritage of the plant and nearby district, its preservation (for example, excursions to the plant involving the workers as the tour guides). • To create at the Promprylad Plant inclusive space for the integration of the elder people in the current social and economic context for their socialization through interaction and exchange of experience with younger generations (for example, courses and sale of handmade goods, dances, concerts, everyday lifehacks, public education). In future, it will affect the development and improvement of accessibility and infrastructure in the district. • To involve the residents into the process of forming the agenda of the project “Promprylad.Renovation”, and thus to reduce the risks for the project (for example, with regard to probable building attempts, etc.).

• To identify the features of the district identity through cultural projects, actualize, and support its manifestations.
• To communicate about the project at the active points of the district (navigation / stands / events / spot information campaigns). • To convert the plant foreside into “the screen” for the transmission of internal processes and project dynamics.
PRESERVATION OF THE HISTORICAL HERITAGE • To record and save the plant information about past and existing artefacts as well. • To conduct events involving different groups concerning the plant for dialogue and mutual empathy formation. • To create the conditions for the exchange of experiences between different generations, in particular, for the transfer of professional skills and knowledge of the older generation to younger people. • To keep in mind the information on the social infrastructure of the plant, its traditions, peculiarities of free life. • To create for employees the understanding and sense of their importance, values, in particular, through the support of their traditions, interest as for their experience. 45
WHAT IS NEXT? STRATEGIC RECOMMENDATIONS
SPATIAL DISTRICT DEVELOPMENT Activation of interaction and mutual influence of the project and the district is possible only in case of high-quality bilateral communication about the project “Promplyad. Renovation” outside and in the opposite direction, which isabout the inquiries and needs of the local community regarding the project. Then a creation of general project with the community becomes real. Here are the formats of this interaction and the involvement of the residents in the project: • To develop the district strategy around Promprylad in close cooperation with the city. • To develop a strategy for the development of public spaces on the territory of the Promprylad Plant and within the district as well. • To create together the changes in the district and improve its accomplishment through collective identification and general implementation of decisions. • To create the infrastructure objects for cultural and practical use of public space in the district (for example, bicycle parking with branding of “Promprylad. Renovation”, infrastructure for dog walking, etc.). • To create easy and understandable navigation, starting primarily with activity points in the district.
