The Devil is in the details – how to make deviled eggs from scratch

Choosing to learn something new, and following it until you reach personal satisfaction can be a transcendental and transformative experience. Whether you learn a new language, how to crochet, or even how to construct a meaningful sentence or paragraph, has the possibility of changing your vision of your self and your world. For the last two years I have taken on the task of learning how to make a plate of deviled eggs that I can take to a dinner, serve company, or hand to Silas, my eight year old step-grandson. Now don’t laugh; it is not a trivial subject to be studied. Deviled or stuffed eggs by any name have a long history. They were mentioned by Petronius in his satirical fiction “Satyricon,” written around 61 A.D. Recipes have been written continually from the first couple of centuries A.D. It seems that after World War II, family cook-outs and pot-luck gatherings with friends have become popular and deviled eggs are usually part of the menu. Deviled eggs are called “Angel eggs” at some church socials devil is not to be invoked. First: You need eggs with deep yellow yolks. The quality of the eggs depends on the food the hens eat. Free range, healthy hens who wander around eating grasses, insects and worms along with their processed chicken food consistently lay fine quality eggs. The chickens we raise are called Americunas. They can fly better than the average chicken. Their ability to take flight, along with a varied protective coloration of feathers also protects them to some degree from predators. They lay eggs with shells that vary from blue, to green, to pink to beige, which give them the nickname, “the Easter egg chickens.” We buy one day old chicks and we have had a hen who goes "broody" so we may start with chicks born on the deck just outside the living room sliding glass doors. For the first few weeks we keep the chicks in the living room in Silas' old wading pool with warming lights, water, starter food, some grasses to nibble on and bedding. They stay there until they start to fly onto the bookshelves above the wading pool and begin to roost on the curtain rods. Watching baby chicks run around is much more fun than watching cat videos on FaceBook.

My Cosmology B Y D AV I D S . WA R R E N

Like everybody else, I was told at an early age that the world is round; but from the back yard of our house in the village of Natural Bridge, New York, looking out over the open sand plain extending to the Camp Drum military reservation, I could see that, yes, the world was all round about us, and I could allow as how it was probably round underneath, but it was obviously flat on top, with a blue dome that came down to the horizon and would keep me from falling off the edge … if I were ever to go that far. That world view served me for a time, and It would be a while before traveled all the way to the horizon, but one day when about five years old, I was out in the yard with my dog Binker, talking to my grandfather’s chickens, when little Clara Bray came by to tell me that her parents were not home, that she knew where her Daddy kept his bullets, and that, if I would help her get them down, we could take some out on the sands and SPLODE them!

coping with the round world

I went with Clara. Binker stayed with the chickens. The rifle shells were in a coffee can on a shelf at the top of the cellar stairs. Clara could not reach them while standing on the top step, but she pulled a chair to the open door and leaned to get them while I held the chair so she wouldn’t tumble down the stairs. And we got the cartridges…bigshouldered, deer slugs. We went a ways out back on the sand with a half dozen cartridges, put a few out on the ground and threw rocks at them. We threw a LOT of rocks, but there were no explosions other than the far rumblings of the Camp Drum artillery. I don’t remember whether we bothered to gather up the cartridges, but we grew bored and wandered on looking for anything at all. And soon enough we happened onto half a dozen kids gathered in a hedgerow watching a brother and sister team

Metaphysical Times try, with no success at all, to do what they had seen their parents or their dogs do. I had no idea what they were doing, and and they didn’t have much feeling for it, so we wandered on. We encountered only a few Black Berries and as many thorns, until Manie Lyons, a wealthy widow who lived halfway between Clara’s house and ours, saw Clara and me from her own kitchen window, and lured us in with cookies. Manie sent Clara home and called my mother, who didn’t even know I was missing. The adventure out on the sands was as much of the world as I saw for a while, and my idea of the universe with myself at the center of it enlarged only enough to allow as how maybe our house rather than I myself, was the true center. Both my mother and my grandmother were born in that house and for all I knew about the origins of things, the house itself had given birth to us all, and was a natural feature that had always been there, or had just grown like a tree. Naturally, I thought the house would always be there, until one day, my mother told me we were going to move from Natural Bridge to the Finger Lakes, whatever Fnger Lakes are. Dumbfounded; I asked her just how we were going to move our HOUSE. In my existential confusion I understood her to say then that a big truck would come along with a WIND MACHINE. And the WIND MACHINE would BLOW the house up onto the truck. That sort of humor would have been out of character for my mother, and I am sure she never said such a thing, though I never discussed it with her until she was in her nineties. I never did tell her about the bullets or the kids in the hedgerow. The actual move was the end of my belief that our Natural Bridge home was the center of a world. And my theory that the otherwise round world was flat on top, with a blue plastic dome that keeps us from going over the edge, was soon replaced by a new model demonstrated for my first grade class with Apples and Oranges. My Cosmology became suddenly more sophisticated a few years later when my fifth grade teacher showed us … also with apples rotating around oranges … they way atoms are structured …. which I observed was just like the Solar System. That did it. It was instantly clear to me how the world within us iike the world without, and that within us there are worlds within worlds and likewise outward, so I might be part of a great big Bear that is itself inside a bigger yet Whale, and so on forever. And now scientists seem to be telling us that matter is spirit, saying that matter and energy are convertible one

Summer 2015 • Page 5 to the other …. and even that light itself t is actually particles, or is it a wave? A wave in what? Has science gone all woo woo? Dumbfounded again, I have not yet adapted to that new information. And just what is the center of the Universe? I am starting to think once again that I am. But I am not sure. I DO know that it’s better not to be TOO sure.

Franklin on magic BY FRANKLIN CRAWFORD Time to start casting the I Ching, dabbling in magic and even mumbling a few humina-huminas now and again. The world, without magic, is indeed full of wonder, but like a glass paper-weight, limited and useful only for keeping things in place. Restoration of Magic, as opposed to magical thinking, is the great challenge of my pre-senescent life. The absence and snuffing out of Magic in our world today is a conspiracy against imagination and cuts us off from possibilities beyond our beautiful sciences, which do not include "Love" or "Mind" among the four great forces of our perceptual discovery. I proceed cautiously and watch for "signs" that Nature agrees or disagrees with my corrections. Franklin Crawford Administrator/Writer/Photographer http://www.tinytowntimes.com TinyTownTimes.com (on FaceBook)

David Rollow in response to Franklin Crawford "So I asked the I Ching if there was a need for more magic in the world and got 11, Peace, first and sixth lines moving. Line one suggests getting to work (pulling up grass by the roots) line six suggests not going too far, or the wall will fall back into the moat. In sum, yes, more magic, but in moderation. A typical reading."

CARE WILD of the

Many of the world's religions proclaim that people have dominion over everything. First, I beg to point out that not everything is a thing. Second, I need to say that I believe they all meant dominion to be a sort of “stewardship”. I've been around long enough to have shed many shapes and wandered many paths, and if there are any specific beliefs I still hold, one is that we are here to take care of each other. I think it is human nature to nurture and to create and to try and make something good to share while we are here, and to leave behind when

we pass on into whatever is next. I realize of course taking care and making better are a matter of perspective. I have been working with animals for a long time. I had pets as a child, helped hand-rear pure- bred dogs with my family, raised farm animals and helped friends with theirs, and now I am working with many different wild creatures as a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. I work mostly with small mammals and songbirds and

Metaphysical Times the occasional waterbird, raptor, or domestic stray. Everyone who cares enough to try and help a wild or stray animal gets a little bit attached to them, so I also work with those compelled to rescue. Loving animals comes easy, losing them never does. So I am sharing some truths, tricks and tips to help those inclined to rescue to do a better job of it to help make the outcome more positive for all involved. The first rule in most healing is to do no harm. Make sure the animal actually needs your help. Observation is your first tool. If the animal is not being threatened by other creatures, people, or weather, keep everyone away for a bit and see what's happening. There may be an anxious parent waiting to move in and feed that baby bird or collect that furry baby. There may not. Only by patient observation can you be certain. Rescuing animals who have been hurt, abused, or abandoned requires mustering and emanating as much calmness as one can. I almost always talk to them in a quiet tone, letting them know I feel their hurt and fear and am trying to help. I've used shirts, sheets, towels and gloved hands to swaddle and subdue many birds. When it's a bird of prey on the side of the road, I walk up from behind, drape a large towel or cloth over their shoulders and reach around front to tighten the cloth around them, while getting their legs and feet with the other hand. Then I gently lift them up holding them close to my chest so I can keep their wings in the wrap and adjust it for comfort and safety while keeping their beaks a safe distance from my face. Then they go into a carrier or box with some holes punched in for air. If it's a carrier I generally cover it with a sheet to keep them focused on their small interior space instead of exposed to confusing outside visuals. If they've been injured I may leave them gently wrapped just so there's no thrashing around making things worse. If it's a goose I use a sheet and a landing net. If it's a long beaked water bird I wear safety glasses as they tend to go for the eyes in self defense. Once I have the beak in hand and secured (a hair tie will do in a pinch), they can be steered where they need to go and gently folded into a carrier. Gloves are especially important when rescuing mammals, many of whom can and will bite. Snow shovels can also come in handy when moving large snapping turtles . . . that is if they won't bite onto a branch and allow you to drag them some where better. Warm, dark, and quiet is the rule, even during warm weather. Keep noisy people and domestic pets away from injured and orphaned animals. This ought to be a “no brainer”, but it is not. Most rehabilitators give animals a quick basic once-over to look wounds that need immediate attention and obvious damage, and then settle them in for 20-30 minutes to adapt to their surroundings before a more thorough examination is made.

In nature, a direct stare and showing of teeth (even if smiling) are considered signs of aggression.

Summer 2015 • Page 7 Sideways glances and a quiet closed mouth are the best ways to observe wildlife in distress. Do not hold them close to your mouth or cradle them on their backs either. If you are not a licensed rehabilitator, after the quick once-over, start looking for one. It is illegal to keep wild creatures as pets and it's probably immoral to consider denying their freedom to them. What most folks don't realize is that they grow up quickly and proceed to be wild creatures with instincts that don't harmonize with civilized domesticity, especially once their hormones kick in.

Never try to feed a cold animal, and please throw away your eye dropper, it's the most common source of aspiration amongst wild babies. Bird “windpipes” are under their tongues and their throats are over their tongues, it's easy to drown them with an eye dropper. If your foundling is thirsty, find a small, soft, clean paint brush, make up brush, or eye shadow sponge , or cotton swab. Dip it in Room Temperature water, shake off the excess, and allow the foundling to suck the water off. This may be a slow process, but it is safer than a dropper. Most rehabbers use small syringes with specially sized nipples. If you know the animal is dehydrated you can make an emergency electrolyte fluid by dissolving with ¾ tsp of sugar and ¼ tsp of salt in 1 cup (8 oz.) of boiled water. Fluids are far more important than food, besides a dehydrated or cold animal can't digest and process food properly. Most older animals won't eat anything that doesn't look like food to them. Knowing the creature's natural history and habitat will help figure out what it should be eating. A little research may help. That being said, please don't believe everything you read on the internet. If you see the same regimen written several times by experienced knowledgeable sources consider it “probably safe”. There are many Passive ways to help wildlife. Develop awareness and appreciation of your own natural habitat. Learn what other species are your neighbors. Don't litter, and clean up if you find litter that may become a hazard to curious wildlife. Please never leave a tangle of fishing line behind and carry it away if you find some on the water's edge – it has the capacity to do enormous damage to many species. Plan your landscape with harmony in mind. Plant trees, shrubs, and flowers that produce food for neighboring creatures. If you must remove a tree, wait until early summer, when most bird babies have flown, if possible. Loss of habitat is the biggest threat to wildlife. Neuter and spay your pets and keep them inside, especially at night. Practice conservation and support organizations that teach people about conserving nature – especially young people. Many rehabilitators accept donations of gently used towels, sheets, and blankets, pet cages, carriers, baby monitors, heating pads, and other items. Most rehabbers would be thrilled to have help with “transport”. Find out who your area rehabilitators are before you need them and see if there are other ways you can help.

Metaphysical Times

Summer 2015 • Page 8

There are some rehabilitation centers that operate as “not for profit organizations” and keep education animals by special permit that are used to teach people and help raise funds. Many just do our best to cover costs using small donations, fund-raising “yard sales”, and our own funds. If someone is trying to raise funds, you are within your rights to ask them how many animals they care for in a year, and where the money goes. Licensed rehabilitators have to keep logs of where the wildlife comes from and how the story ends, and most of us can give you at least an approximate number for the preceding year. A lot of the money goes towards formulas, foods, cage building and repair, and into gas tanks. This is a situation where quantity does not necessarily mean quality, and helping animals whether it's six or sixty, is helping animals. Finding a wildlife rehabilitator can be difficult. You can start by contacting your local DEC office. If they aren't available you can call 866-881-2809, it's a 24 hour service that may be able to help. Going on line you can find a list of rehabilitators at www. dec.ny.gov/animals/83977.html and there are other helpful links listed at www.nyswrc.org . If you find a listing, please contact by phone. Most of us are busy and do not have the computer on 24/7. Some of us don't even have computers . . . imagine that! When you do contact someone, please remember we are licensed by the state and federal governments, but our work is totally volunteer. We are also restricted from charging for our services, so consider making a donation if you are helped. Most of us do not take all animal species for a lot of really good reasons, but may be able to give you more numbers to try calling. If some one says they're full or closed, that means taking any more animals in would jeopardize the care of all, so please look for help elsewhere.

Dog's Plot The Book of Mica B Y D AV I D S . WA R R E N Before the birth of Loon Island, of Lake Bonaparte, or of the Bonaparte hills (which are only the stumps of mountains older than the Himalayas) all this area was under an anonymous sea. That sea had a long sedimentary existence during which many bezillions of oysters, clams, and conks lay down their shells to form deep beds of limestone. Then as the molten earth seethed below, the crust of the planet cracked open. Up welled and out flowed the hot magma. The forward lobe of the advancing magma met the old sea and vaporized much of it, leaving the shrunken puddles of itself which we call the Great Lakes, and a wide band of mineral deposits and crystal formations along the line of the violent confrontation. In our North West Adirondack shield country, the most spectacular example of the mineral formations resulting from this Cambrian period event was the formerly famous Crystal Cave between Lake Bonaparte and Natural Bridge. A giant geode with crystals pointing inward, the Crystal Cave formation was sealed at creation and unknown to anyone until modern mining machinery accidentally exposed it in the

early twentieth century. The crystals were so large and spectacular in their array that the cave was dismantled and removed by the state geologists. Some years later the crystals were remounted in a simulated cave at the state museum in Albany, where it became a major draw, and had its brief fame. But after the dust had settled for a few years, the cave was dismantled for cleaning. Now, half a century later, the Crystal Cave is stacked and stored in the state museum, out of sight and much forgotten, even on its native ground. The Crystal Cave, restored to this area, would be useful as a tourist attraction for its huge curiosity, but the smaller quartz crystals available to early prospectors who poked around lake shores and open seams, would have been useful as actual weapon points, and others would have been adopted for optical or magical purposes. Most minerals occurring as ore would have been of no interest to primitive gatherers, but iron ore, which is still being mined in this corner of the Adirondacks is the source for Indian ochre pigment, and, mixed with milk, was the original barn paint of the white farmsteaders. And there is lead in these hills. Individual Indians were observed into the late nineteenth century packing out lead from their own secret

Metaphysical Times

source somewhere here abouts. Maybe some of the stoneagers were handy with lead, as it could can be smelted at low temperatures and hammered cold to make net weights. Late nineteenth century Indians observed on their way to and from the lead deposits probably used the lead primarily to cast bullets. I recall looking out our window in Natural Bridge and seeing a man on his way home: his face, clothes, and lunch box (and maybe the inside of his lungs) all powdered white from the talc of the Natural Bridge mine. Some of the bare- ground Indians would have come to grind a pouch of the local talc maybe to be added to bear grease as ghost face pigment.

But the most visible and possibly the most alluring of the shield shore minerals would have been the mica which is a morphological cousin of talc and crops out in the Bonaparte hills in jumbled shelves of chunky books. Even a small boy can open such a book; and the resulting volumes can be opened to more translucent volumes, every one of which can be opened to more and more transparent pages.... until the book is read away to nothing . Or so it was with this small boy on Loon Island. Mica is actually useful as a fire proof of protoglass in stove doors, and though there were probably very few long houses with mica windows, the early native gathers would have found mica useful as an accent in decorative quill and bead work.

Summer 2015 • Page 11 In the late eighteen hundreds, the Bonaparte Mica outcrops were exploited by white prospectors, probably using mules to pack out the largest specimens to be used for stove and lantern windows. Following that short episode, the tailings and pits were scavenged by our grandparents and our parents, then picked over by us as kids, and now are all but lost to the hundred year jungle. One of the old lake postcards sold at Priests Bonaparte store was a simple outline of the lake showing the main islands, Bonaparte Cave, a few neighboring ponds, and not just one but two x's indicating mica mines down at the West end of the lake. My family only knew about the one mine. When I was twelve and my brother Herb was sixteen we took the post card as a guide and went looking for the lost mine. We soon lost ourselves and we stayed lost for half a day, during which we found Indian Lake, Burnt Pond twice, and one or two other things I might tell you about..... but didn't find the mine. Never did. Today, I probably couldn't even find the one we used to visit. But up on the Loon Island fireplace mantle, at the base of the stuffed owl along with the auto-graphed artist's fungus, and the iron- slag turquoise from Alpina, we still have at least one unopened book of mica.

And it is mica flakes in the granite mix that, on a good day, makes the Loon Island shore line sparkle like a bracelet. Find David S. Warren at Dog's Plot FaceBook Page.

Hi Kris,

In a previous reading you told me that I would want to go to New Zealand between the snowfall and feb 2014.You also mentioned the name Simone. That spirit was saying that name was important. I haven't told you, but I had just come back from New Zealand 2 wks. before our reading. During my time there I met a new friend. You blew me away when you stated her name-it is Simone!!! I just thought you deserve to know that like clockwork as this snowstorm rolled in, I heard from her recently. She is severely depressed and I had to notify help for her and now I am going to go there. I just thought you should know how amazingly accurate you are. Christine. .

Questions about Past, Present, Future Are you interested in Communication with Ancestors, Family on the other side Call Kris 315-483-0074 Kris I came to you at a psychic fair in Rochester, NY on March 6, 2010. You mentioned my father Ed, who had passed 8 years earlier and he was there with us. I never mentioned my father or the fact he passed. I asked about a future relationship. You said 3-7 years and it would have something to do with the South Pacific. I recently met a man, (3 years later). It feels like we have known each other for years. I asked where he got his name from. He said it was given to him after an orphan boy his dad met in WWII in the South Pacific. You are amazing! I reached my hands to the floor, cupped them wide and grunted as if to be grasping onto and lifting a heavy ball and chain. Of course it was not (physically) really there. And for all I know all twelve or so in the group would have considered the medium unleashed. And I was in my own “medium ship” sort of way. You see within the discipline of being, in part, a psychical Medium, my body becomes the subject - the conduit through which the information flows. And it is my habit by nature to translate a message in my “whole” bodied, mind and spirits form. Mumbling to myself, I moved in slow sliding steps to my left as if dragging the “ball and chain”. While internally clarifying the information, I moved past one, two, three individuals. By that time I knew what had been oozing into me was the guilt being carried by a deceased man’s daughter, linked to his passing, I stopped in front of the fourth person. It was a woman. ...I fell to the floor by her chair and draped my body over the contours of the (invisible) iron ball. And in that short restful period, spirit gave his name. It was her father… she cried. She thought her father was carrying a ball and chain. We explained to her that her father was not carrying the ball and chain, yet he had been feeling bound to her through the turmoil of her guilt she held for him. His concern for her was the ball and chain of guilt she had been carrying. (That it could weigh them both down). We explained the dynamics of the spirit realm for him as a dense vortex of light, where his own assessment of parenting had become clear to him and was woven in the intricate web of light around her still. He was ready to move on to other areas of his journey. (You see, once the assessment has started, one must complete the journey before he or she will decide to rest in spirit or move on to another incarnation). However, the dynamics of his daughter’s sadness was in part holding him there within her guilt. He indicated that as long as she felt pain, he would not leave her. Yet rather she should recall him in the love she has always known for him. His observation of her “love for him” was why she had developed the guilt. And for he own reasons, this development was intimately interwoven within her decision. This was clearly stated in retrospect to (all) human basic sympathetic survival skills. And to rectify the sympathy of self-guilt, was keyed to perception. And in the end… is self-understanding. I recall speaking the words for her father… “I love you and I will always be there with you. Even as I move forward in my journey I can be a part of you. For now, from here, I can be where ever I need at once”. Suddenly my body was like warm air filling a balloon. I rose and straightened. When I opened my eyes and we looked at each other she cried. And in that moment she said she had seen her father in my eyes. I cried with her. I know she saw him. I felt the joy a father might feel. Peace on your journey, Kris

Reiki: Just The Facts Part XI: Reiki Healing With Crystals By Don Brennan Why use the energies of crystals and stones in Reiki healing sessions? Do we really need to add anything to Reiki? The short answer is no. Plain, old, unembellished, generic Reiki is all we need. It’s perfect as it is, without needing any other vibration. Reiki is the complete and eternal cosmic energy that has always been available, throughout history, to human beings who have activated the soul center of the brain through enlightening experiences or through the guidance of a mentor. It’s the pure, uncontaminated cosmic energy from the spiritual source of creation. Our job as Reiki practitioners, then, is to get our human selves out of the way and to fill our selves completely with spirit. When we do this, we become clear channels and bring through a greater degree of Reiki energy. But our connection with spirit is just part of the healing process. The other part is the receptivity of the person receiving the healing energy. We are so fragile and so complicated that we often “raise our shields,” to borrow a Star Trek term, and block our reception to healing energy. Adding appropriate crystals and stones can help us to lower those shields. Adding the vibrations of specific stones can provide the right emotional support for relaxation and receptivity for deeper healing to take place. Put a stone or crystal in someone’s hand and they often return to childhood days of collecting polished stones at the beach, quartz crystals from streams,

Summer 2015 • Page 15 fossils from banks of shale or digging for semi-precious gems. It’s almost like bringing a puppy into a room full of elderly patients who light up with big smiles and become little children again. Besides connecting emotionally with crystals, we also engage with them bioelectrically. As human beings, we interact vibrationally with all aspects of the physical world. Our DNA is a crystal lattice structure. It has been suggested that the physical bodies of human beings are liquid crystals. Biophysicist Mae-Wan Ho says, “Every part is in communication with every other part through a dynamic, tunable, responsive liquid crystal medium that pervades the whole body, from organs and tissues to the interior of every cell.” If we do have this crystalline structure within us and we are, in fact, living crystals, it becomes easier to understand our harmonious resonance with crystals. I’ve been asked if Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, used crystals with Reiki. Yes, he did, but only in a limited way. He would fill clear quartz spheres with Reiki and send them home with people to receive additional Reiki healing energy. He had a method for attuning these crystals with Reiki so they would always channel Reiki energy and never need to be recharged. I have a quartz bracelet that Arjava Petter attuned with Reiki and I dearly love it for so many reasons. There is a method that Reiki practitioners can use for charging crystals with Reiki. Unfortunately, it’s not permanent, like Usui’s special method, so stones will need recharging, but we can charge them up over and over again. I always send a little Reiki into a stone after I’ve cleansed it with Reiki. And every time I send a stone home with someone, I enhance its specific vibration with Reiki. Cleansing stones with Reiki is possibly the easiest, safest method available to us. We don’t need water, sea salt, smudging herbs, fragrances, sound, the moon or the sun. We don’t have to worry about the vulnerability of any particular stone, because Reiki can cause no harm. And once we’ve been attuned to Reiki, it’s always readily available.

A very nice perk of combining Reiki with crystal healing is that we don’t need to buy larger, more expensive stones. All we need is a small piece of a particular specimen to connect with its vibrational signature, and let the Reiki energy amplify its beneficial effects. We can also use Reiki to program clear quartz with the vibration of other stones. So if you want several expensive stones of the same specimen, you only have to buy one. The downside to adding crystals, oils, healing sounds and other vibrations to Reiki, is that we can be deceived into believing that WE are doing the healing. Yes, we make decisions on crystal selection and placement, and we monitor energetic processes, but the stones and the person receiving their energies are doing the real healing. It’s best to begin slowly with adding crystals to your Reiki practice. Start with a small collection and get to know them. Listen to them and feel their energy. Understand that each stone has its own consciousness and let them communicate how and when they wish to be of service. As other stones find their way into your life, really take the time to get to know them so they can more easily become part of your healing family. As we get to know our crystals on an individual basis, we can begin to appreciate the special gifts that each one has to share. Sometimes, adding just one crystal to a Reiki session and explaining its benefits can encourage the person to give his or her self permission to heal. Tuning in to our clients and listening to our crystals will always guide us appropriately. Whenever it feels right to use our crystals, they can be wonderful allies in our Reiki healing service. © 2015 Donald Brennan

yoga glasses PETER FORTUNATO You don’t see anybody wearing glasses during yoga class. If they need glasses, then they can’t see anybody who might also need them badly enough to wear them because she can’t use contacts. She is the correct pronoun. Nobody but women in my yoga class, thought Lucy, who in fact had started to attend three classes per week at her health club. And if a guy turns up occasionally, usually he doesn’t come back. Even the cute young guy who knew all that stuff about correct breathing only showed up once. Unless, she said to herself, you didn’t notice him because you weren’t wearing your glasses! Lucy doesn’t like to wear contact lenses during yoga, even if they’re the supposedly breathable kind. It’s okay, as a matter of fact it’s great, because when she lets go, she really lets go, and she likes to let her eyes to float inside their sockets under lightly closed lids, as one of her teachers always says. Always the same thing, the exact same words: float inside their sockets under lightly closed lids. “Don’t forget your yoga glasses,” Lucy’s daughter Sarah called out, just as her mom was preparing to leave for class. “What?” Lucy replied, searching for her car keys at the front door, her fingers rummaging in the tray that hung from the wall. She scraped something sharp and winced and looked up. “You know: those old eye glasses. You always wear those for your yoga classes,” Sarah said, smiling. “I don’t wear them during the class, silly. Just for driving over because if I lost them I wouldn’t care too much. At the gym you can misplace stuff and then they sweep it away or something.” Sarah had just turned fifteen and had recently had to have braces attached to her teeth. She was, Lucy thought, making an effort to remind everybody that looks didn’t count and brains did. She hadn’t exactly become a smarty pants, but she had a lot to say to everybody about everything. “Right. It’s just that without your eyeglasses, you can’t find where you’ve put things -- like these keys.” She scooped Lucy’s keys from the sofa cushions directly behind her mother. “See. If you at least had had your yoga glasses you would have noticed them. I noticed them. Just another piece of evidence proving that I’m old enough to drive!” Lucy smiled at her, took the keys with one hand, and with the other produced from her bag the famous eye glasses: they were horn-rimmed, their lenses shaped perfectly round. The bridge was a semicircular piece of dark brown plastic. Some years earlier Lucy had believed she was making a fashion statement in choosing glasses that made her look so studious. Like a German schoolgirl, a friend had told her. They were functional and pretended to be

Summer 2015 • Page 16

nothing other than corrective lenses. That was why they had been hip, well, for a while at least. In those days -- not so long ago, really -- before her third child, Samuel, was born, Lucy had believed she could progress through her forties with fashion and flair. And a flat belly. But that hadn’t lasted. Three children: the youngest, fully seven years junior to the eldest, Arthur, and in the middle Sarah, her precocious teenage daughter. That is what had consumed the energy that Lucy once imagined would continue to flare past middle age. Even her eyesight had changed during her forties, dimming it seemed, and the old schoolgirl glasses, still useful, were now much weaker than her present prescription. Although she wore contacts most of the time, she also had a pair of sturdy, light wire-rims -- but to say that she didn’t really care if she lost the schoolgirls was untrue. They were a part of her. Her thoughts continued as she was pulling into the parking lot behind the health club. She was trying to go forward in her life with new interests. Now that Samuel was in grade school and she had so much help from his conscientious older siblings, Lucy finally had time enough to think about herself. She was blessed with a husband who made money with a company that sold catalogues of office supplies on line. Joseph had been, if not visionary, at least prophetic about the way that the Internet would impact marketing. And he had always encouraged her to look forward to a future that included not only the loveliest of children -- he had wanted at least three, three was all that he was getting -- but also a life for herself, perhaps a career in medical records administration, which she’d studied in college but never applied in what he called “a meaningful way.” They had married soon after a “wild time in California,” when, as Joseph puts it, “all the values we inherited from our elders were challenged.” Among other things, this was one way he avoided thinking about Lucy’s affair with a logger on San Luis Ridge. Joseph hadn’t really liked their California years, and he’d never been interested in subjects like yoga or Buddhism or devotional Hindu singing, but she had. In California she had studied them avidly, because she was then and believes she still is now “a seeker after freedom.” Joseph never replies when she says that, but instead smiles knowingly, which is one of the few things about him that she hates -- she also hates feeling that way about her husband, but it’s true, and she tells herself that therefore she has to honor it.

Metaphysical Times In fact, Lucy doesn’t look back at those California days as being especially wild: she was young, she liked the sunshine, the seaside, the tall pine trees of the Sierra Nevada mountains. If Carl Jensen, that was his name, was also offering something new to a long haired girl from Redding, then she was glad to have that experience too. Her memories of him were mixed with his scent especially, his raw body odor and the flavor of wood smoke, as well his “chainsaw cologne,” as he called it, that clung to his flannel shirts and his blond hair after a day of work in the woods. Carl would have understood why you started to take yoga classes three times a week and began to burn incense before a tiny bronze statue of Shiva Nataraja, the Lord of the Dance. Carl would encourage you, Lucy thought. At the gym, she had trouble finding a parking space. When she did, the Volvo was too big and she had to squeeze out of the passenger side door. She was running late; she knew it without looking at her watch. Having three children had taught her about being late, no matter how much good planning went into things for a “successful” event, as her husband would say. Being a mother gave her a certain amount of grace time, but, oh, she hated coming into classes late. It disturbed the other students and it seemed so unyoga-like: imprecise and graceless. Lucy pushed through the swinging doors of the club, smiled at the receptionist, a sweet college girl named Kathy in a tight blue tee-shirt sporting the club’s logo. She walked directly to the yoga studio still in her coat, her big bag slung on her shoulder. Fortunately she had learned to wear her loose fitting, middle aged woman yoga clothing to class; but when she’d hung up her coat in the studio’s anteroom and was about to join the group, she saw herself in a mirror. My God, she thought, although she knew not which God she was invoking, how have you become so sloppy, fat and tired? She took one long, slow, yoga breath – and it did in fact help her to relocate her center. The faint scent of a joss stick came to her like a balm, and it too reminded her of those long ago days of fragrant wood smoke from cook stoves that wafted down through the Ponderosa pines on damp green mornings. Life is good, she had learned back then. We have everything we need here on Earth to be happy. The closer we are to nature, the more likely we are to experience our own Real Nature. She still believed that. One of her missions now was too learn what was natural about this aging, forty eight year old body of hers. Lucy felt as if each of her three children had simply passed through that body: each one in turn had from two cells joined within her womb, a sanctum whose mysteries she herself was not truly in charge of. Sometimes she’d felt as if she were only the housekeeper for that place, and that her children were not hers at all, but a series of souls whom she’d been entrusted to clothe with flesh and then learn to love. Yet she’d never had any doubt about the mother love she might feel at any moment for those three bodies and souls. The incense was lovely, and tambura music was playing from a machine while Lucy looked for a place to roll out her mat. There were at least a dozen people near the front of the room, girls actually, barely old enough to be called women, although of course they were, she reminded herself. They reminded Lucy

Summer 2015 • Page 17 of swans, stretching their elegant necks and rolling their hips in time with the subtle beat of the tabla drums playing under the tambura’s silken strings. At the head of the class today was Cindy, a woman in her late twenties, the mother of Tyler, a boy that Lucy’s son Samuel knew from school. Lucy and Cindy made eye contact, and Cindy put her palms together in the yoga greeting, namaste. Lucy reflected her gesture and bowed her head slightly. It was then that she became aware of the eye glasses, when they slipped forward on her nose. She looked up suddenly and the glasses jumped heavily back into place. Cindy seemed to be beaming a thought to her: don’t you want to remove them? Then Cindy pointed one of her pink lacquered fingertips up toward her own eyes, tapping against her sharp cheekbone, as if Lucy hadn’t yet realized that she still had on her glasses. Her schoolgirl specs might not be the correct prescription for her aging eyes, and yet she could see with them adequately. In fact, going all the way back to her very first yoga classes a year ago when she was still wearing contacts, it seemed that today was the first day she was able to see so clearly. For one thing, sexy Cindy in her pink and navy outfit looked more like an advert for yoga fashions than a serious seeker after freedom. And when Lucy looked around the room she could tell most the women were about Cindy’s age or younger, all of them they dressed in approximately the same manner: chic yoga clothing or dance tights, their lustrous manes of hair held back with specially designed colorful ties. Then there were the others: a few older women, who, like Lucy, were beyond the illusion that their bodies were theirs to control. Of these, she knew two or three a little and knew what they’d been through -- breast cancer, spinal surgery, the death of a life partner -- and what they were probably anticipating about the years ahead. Yoga is good medicine, Lucy was fond of saying. A preventative. A tonic. It stretches you forward and leads you back to your Real Nature. My God, she said to herself, realizing not only that she believed this, but also actually feeling the presence of that One who could take any form, and did, and then outlived them all. She removed the eyeglasses and placed them carefully near her mat at the wall of the studio. She happened to glance at the big mirrors on the far side of the room, but the images in it looked blurry, as usual. When she settled down on her firm pad with her hands holding her bare feet, soles together, closing her eyes as she stretched, something bright and very clear remained open inside of her. Linda initiated Aura Reflections and began conducting aura photography consultations in 2003 after receiving training and certification from Interactive Aura Video Systems. She has developed a unique process that enables the client to thoroughly understand the energy field around their physical bodies and in their chakra system. The aura video station Linda utilizes is an imaging system that uses biofeedback to measure, analyze, and display an accurate representation of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual states of the client. Each color has its own vibration that reflects the client’s personality traits and how they individually express themselves. The aura size, brightness, intensity, shape, and distribution of colors bring specific detail to understand the uniqueness of each person. The system also shows the energy level of each chakra, and by analyzing their color, size, and shape, an accurate reading of how the client processes those energies can be clearly explained. Linda provides her services at holistic and metaphysical events and home parties in the Central New York area.

Sun Sign Potentials A Guide to Understanding Self and Others

SAGITTARIUS by Dennis Cole Greetings! We continue in our series on the “seed potentials” of Life experiences for each of the 12 Signs of the zodiac. Sagittarius is featured in this Issue. We will look at some excerpts from my forthcoming book, “Sun Sign Potentials – A Guide to Understanding Self and Others.” Our focus will be on Sagittarius’ relationship to the 3 other Signs in the zodiac which form a cross of 90 and 180 degrees to Sagittarius. Using the meanings behind these 4 Signs on this “Mutable cross” mandala, we can somewhat describe the “WHAT, WHERETO, HOW and WHY?” of Sagittarius’ Life Potentials. To learn more about this Solar Astrology approach to interpretation, in which the hour of birth is not necessary, you may refer, when posted, to the summer 2012 Issue, pg. 25, of the Metaphysical Times, or go to aquariusservices.com and click on “articles”.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec.

21) This 1st Solar House cusp relates to the “WHAT” keynotes of your current Life’s intended Focus and steps to Individuation. Your Sun sign, is an adaptable and fiery sign. Your planetary ruler is Jupiter. Jupiter ties in with your fundamental personality. It relates to optimism,

creativity, abundance, opportunity and growth. Some of the major attributes you may possess are a love of freedom, knowledge and truth. You are an aspiring individual. And like the Centaur, you are always aiming for the nextnew-thing; hopefully with the “man in charge of the beast!” You’re likely to be philosophical about life and love. You have leadership tendencies and you probably feel a need to be creatively selfexpressive in some way. These two tendencies are a run-off from your two fiery “cousins” in the Zodiac -Aries and Leo. At times you may become nervous or restless. You possess a gambling spirit. You can also be very optimistic and jovial. In fact, there are times when you tend to get into excesses, thinking that you can accomplish more than you really can at one time. You put considerable energy into your pursuit of knowledge and freedom. You will probably find enjoyment in such things as travel, the outdoors and wide open spaces. Sports activities can appeal to you. There may also be interests at one time or another in such areas as: psychology, medicine, drama, law, religion, or other forms of higher social expression. At one point or another writing or teaching may become of interest to you. You are lucky and have a pretty good sense of humor. You are direct and to the point. Sometimes this may cause you to hurt someone. Not that this is intentional; it’s just that you tend to “shoot from the hip,” to be frank and get to the truth of matters. You also appreciate honesty in others. At times you are impatient and impulsive, and

You are not usually interested in details or routine affairs. And sometimes you may find it difficult to finish some of the things which you start. Your activities are often expansive, for you have a tendency to do things on a large scale. This may result in a feeling of never being caught up. You can be creative and ambitious. You’re very intuitive and you have remarkable foresight. There’s always something that seems to bail you out of problems. Although your fortuitous outcomes may often not come until the “eleventh hour!” Perhaps this “Guardian Angel effect” is often the reward for your optimism. This makes sense when you understand (a key word in your life!) the great “Universal Law of Attraction;” a.k.a.., “As ye sow, (choice of thoughts) so shall ye reap.” James Allen expressed how this “like attracts like” Universal Law” might work out for us if we used our free will to think and feel on purpose. He wrote: “Think good thoughts and they will quickly become actualized in your outward life in the form of good conditions.” Although yours is a very spiritual path, you sometimes need to beware of hypocrisy, narrowmindedness, or non-forgiveness. With your inborn enthusiasm, you need to be careful about jumping to conclusions, or suddenly starting things without thorough preparation. You’ll benefit by using your head and looking at alternative possibilities more often. This will help you socially and with your goals. You tend to run into more people from distant places, or other countries, than most people do. You may even become interested in certain foreignrelated activities, or another language. It’s likely that certain countries may appeal to you from timeto-time. Chances are good that you will get to travel to other countries or distant trips from time-to-time.. You’re often thinking about your own objectives, hopes and goals; yet you are capable of inspiring or teaching others. From time-to- time you will benefit through taking the initiative to make a new start for yourself. Sometimes you will benefit through leadership, and there should be opportunities for this. Doors open as you overcome self-doubts and dare to plunge into new ventures with enthusiasm and optimism. And this will usually pay off for you - as long as you have “done your homework.” And the main “homework” may be as simple as your

choice to feel good when you’re thinking about your ever-next-new thing!.” You have an abundance of innate creative talents, but, like anything else, these can be wasted if you lose focus and scatter your energies in too many directions, or expect to improve without initiative. Much of your life may be dedicated to self-understanding and spiritual knowledge.

Gemini 7th Solar House Cusp Influence and information relate to the “WHERETO” of your current intended Life’s Focus. You attract a youthful, active, intelligent and communicative partner. Your partner, at their worst, can be pessimistic, shy or suspicious. On the other hand, your partner is flexible and able to adapt to a variety of situations. Your partner or mate is curious, quick-witted, and objective. This is a person who could enjoy intellectual, social, stimulus, variety and change! Like you, this person is interested in travel and is eager to learn. Both of you tend to love your freedom and to express your ideas. Although you may tend to let your partner make connections, and speak for you, at times. Your tendency in relationships may be to have an eye out for someone new and exciting. If this tendency were to continue after marriage, you might find yourself getting into more than one marriage. Perhaps a marriage type situation would work out better after you have experienced a long period of freedom, which is something that you value highly. Your partner might be someone stemming from your early life or perhaps someone you could get to know through a brother or sister, a relative or neighbor. This partner might even resemble or remind you of one of your own siblings. It’s also possible for you to meet someone through travel or a learning or communication situation. This person might be from a distant place or another country.

Summer 2015 • Page 25 Pisces 4th Solar House Cusp Influence and information relate to the “HOW” of your current intended Life’s Focus. You have some high ideals about home and family, as well as about eventual life directions. These are areas in which you may need to develop faith. As time goes on you may find opportunities to mellow out more and perhaps to help others. Sometimes you can get confused about home and family matters. You probably have some secrets concerning home, family or mother. One of these areas might become a source of sorrow. Whether your own life becomes pitiful and confused or a source of inspiration and nurturing support for others will depend on you. Please remember, though, that you can’t really be of help to others if you don’ care about and pay attention to how you feel! Much may depend on your willingness to develop more compassion while sacrificing some of your freedom. “Sacrifice” in the sense of, if it feels like the better choice at the time! Always keeping in mind that there’s not much more important than that you care about and pay attention to, how you feel! Another factor may be your need to get more into feelings and inner spiritual interests as time goes on, and to begin to recognize your Oneness with the All. The degree of self-surrender and paying attention to your Inner-being’s guidance, through positive or negative feelings, will have a strong bearing on your later conditions. Confusion or compassion; it will largely be up to you! But when it truly feels good, then you can know that’s how your Source – the God within you - sees it. Reminds me, I once had a thought: “My will be done, meets THY will be done, when I’m having fun!” We’re all here, out on this physical “leading-edge” of Our eternally-

expanding Creation for one primary purpose, and that is: To “become like a little child.” To experience the Adventures in learning how to Joy our way to Joy! Wise Teachers-of-Teachers in non-physical (“Abraham”), suggest that we can do this “by following the trail of thoughts that feel increasingly better.” As time goes on you may find more Inner Peace, which the earlier life-style and expansion didn’t seem to leave time for. You might find yourself more around the ocean or water in later life. You probably would like your home to be a retreat or a place of privacy and Peace. Your mother is probably a sensitive person, generous, and compassionate. She has had opportunities to be of inspirational, creative, service to others. Sometimes that has centered on children or young people. Your dreams can often be associated with mother, family, home and the areas touched on in this “HOW” section. And this includes an Inner Life focus and desire to know Self at the core of your Be-ing!

Influence and highlights relate to the “WHY” of your current intended Life’s Focus.

You will work hard to get ahead in the world. In fact, hard work, practicality, and discrimination are a must for any lasting accomplishments or fulfillment for you. Surprisingly, you can be quite down-toearth, efficient, focused and organized when it comes to your social ambitions or career. So in the long run, focus, selfdiscipline and practical effort will likely bring about success for you. Keeping in mind that true success is Joy! In your work you could get involved in some sort of practical service to others. This might even relate to the field of health or hygiene in some way. ‘The Brilliant World of FasterEFT’ Suzanne Masters

By now EFT , Emotional Freedom Technique, is a household word to many of those living and working in the “Alternative “ world. This involves self health care, care for others, growth & healing on all levels..physically, emotionally, mentally, even spiritually. Gary Craig lead the forefront on this EFT tapping process in 1995 and I learned about him 10 yrs back or so. I purchased his sets of CDs and watched them diligently. It was a technique of tapping with fingertips on meridian points, similar in part to that of acupuncture or acupressure, along with particular wordage, some humming of familiar tunes and eye rolling, all to produce, if I am correct, specific brain stimulants. The intended result is to clear or reduce old trauma and other bothering issues. And it worked, though seemingly with some guessing. But things have changed, and after all, that’s what we’re looking for, change. And ‘FasterEFT ‘ is where that change is happening. Robert Smith stepped up to the plate and created a place where less is more, less points to tap on with quicker results. ( Carole Tuttle EFT expert explains that as our amazing Universe amps up the energy, we in turn, are energetically lighter in response.) So aiming more directly , as this process does, can easily shift old memories, release emotional baggage, old trauma, even physical pain connected to these sensations. The icing on the cake...it’s permanent! There’s no going back next week to rehash more of the same. In this process, we are constantly moving forward, and life just gets happier. We’ve come a long ways from months and years even of talk therapy to a few hrs session of FEFT where huge, ‘seemingly real’ blocks, that have kept us in a perpetual pattern of non stop run a muck treadmill, can now release, ‘let it go’ totally and forever. In Roberts Smith’s words, ‘We are never broken’. Added to Alternative Healing Therapies... place FasterEFT on the top of your list! I have found no other model of alternative healing that works so swiftly in such a short time! And, let me dazzle you more! A client coming in for a tapping session can get results without even having to say what his or her issue is. Its true. Faster Emotional Freedom Technique is based on you tuning into your feelings and what goes on within you to cre-

Metaphysical Times Being Civilized Sure is Distracting BY ELLEN LEAHY Have you ever thought about the cost of what we call being “civilized”? That thought struck me one day when talking to a neighbor who was having her driveway re-black-topped for $1,500 ... a lot of coin just to pretty-up a perfectly serviceable driveway that didn’t even need real maintenance. Then, there’s the car and all its parts; one’s house, lawns, gardens and tools; clothing and linens; furnishings, food-stuff and booze; medicines and lotions and potions; kitchen gear and household appliances; the family’s jewels and china, and all the toys, crafts and hobbies for the babies through adults. And, if you are anything like me, there are the books and the curios and the art and the pets. Then, there is the dreaded paperwork to keep all of it, and us, in order. All this stuff that is needed to be “civilized" takes a lot of time and energy. Our focus is often locked on the outer, physical world, blinding us to the inner and the spiritual, distracting us from the raw energy that is everywhere and connects all things. We aren’t attuned because we are so darn “civilized”. Some of our tangible items do connect us to the greater world around and within us. But we must be able to let go of mere things, to damp down the chatter of superficial “shoulds” and “musts”. Don't you think it would really be civilized of us to put this away and meditate right now?

Summer 2015 • Page 30 BY SARAH THOBURN WELCH

Following an afternoon of “dress-up,” my friend and I ran into her kitchen to grab a glass of lemonade. Setting the glass down on the kitchen table, my eyes were instantly grabbed by a bowl filled with some of the most beautifully colored Easter eggs I had ever seen. I couldn’t take my eyes off of them. I asked my friend in wonderment what they were and where they came from. She told me that they were Ukrainian Eggs and that her mother had made them by putting wax on them and then dipping them in different colored dyes. At this point her mother entered the kitchen and told me that I could make them at home too with an improvised tool. To get started all I needed to do was to stick a straight pin in the eraser end of a pencil, hold the pin over candle to heat it up, dip the pin into some melted wax, and drag the pin head across the surface of the egg. Well, I ran home and told my mother what we needed to do. No more plain colored Paaz® egg decorating kit for me! This resulted in hours of fun sitting at our kitchen table creating our own beautiful eggs that Easter. Fast forward 40 years and as I was perusing an Arts and Crafts catalog for Christmas present ideas. As I flipped through the pages nothing was catching my interest, when all of a sudden I spied a Ukrainian Egg Decorating Kit, complete with that special tool, dyes, wax, and instructions. And a flood of wonderful memories came rushing back. I had to have it! It’s been a number of years since then and my passion for this form of art has not subsided. I work on eggs year round. The process is really very simple and I have found that it is a wonderful canvas to study color and design ideas: Eggs are intricately decorated and dyed using a wax-resist method similar to batik. Designs are “written” on an egg with a kistka, which is a pencil-like tool that is heated. Melted wax is drawn through the tip of the kistka when its metal tip is placed in contact with the surface of the egg. For a traditional design sequence, the first beeswax layer covers the areas that are to remain white. Then the egg is put through a series of dye baths from yellow to black. Between each dye bath more wax is applied to protect the color just achieved before the next successive dye bath. By the end of the process most of the egg is covered in wax, fully obscuring the design. The egg is then held over a candle to melt off the wax, revealing the beautiful design. In addition to dyes, etching can be included in the design process. By submerging the egg in acid (artist uses vinegar or citric acid), areas where the shell is exposed will be etched. This adds wonderful relief to the egg. For naturally colored (e.g. brown) as well as dyed eggs, the colored outer surface is etched away to expose the white shell beneath. Pysanky have both pagan and Christian roots and are traditionally made during the season of Lent as an Easter greeting or blessing. Different symbols and colors are used to convey meaning. In ancient times legends circulated that as long as eggs were being decorated that the world would continue to exist and that good would prevail over evil. The Hutzuls, from Western Ukraine, believe that the fate of the world depends on PYSANKY. As long as egg-decorating continues, the world will exist. Should the custom cease, evil…in the guise of a monster chained to a huge cliff...will encompass the world and destroy it. Each year the monster’s servants encircle the globe, keeping record of the number of PYSANKY made. When there are few, the monster’s chains loosen, and evil flows through the world. When there are many, the chains hold taut, allowing love to conquer evil. Not being one to tempt fate, I do my best now to contribute as many eggs as possible to this cause every year.

Metaphysical Times The Devil is in the details... continued from page #2 When they are old enough, we lead them to the chicken house, feed them in there, and in a few days open the doors up wide, hoping that at night they will come back in to roost. They usually do, though last year all the chickens decided to roost at night in the Horse Chestnut tree. I did not sleep well last summer worrying about my chickens and predators. If you can't raise your own chickens, make sure you know just who does raise the ones whose eggs you buy, that all of the chickens are treated well, and eat a healthy and varied diet. Second: Gather the ingredients you need for the deviled egg stuffing. I like horseradish. Buy good Horseradish seed, plant it just about anywhere, varmints don't care for Horseradish nor do they like the Garlic we plant (I use a touch of Garlic in deviled eggs). If you grate your horseradish, whether you grow it or buy the root at a store, BE CAREFUL. Fresh horseradish is great but the flavor is stronger than you might think. Lately I gather my mustard seed, it's brown and has a deep, strong taste. Mustard seed is tricky, it takes a LOT of mustard seeds to make a very small pot of prepared mustard. You can make mustard out of dry commercial powdered mustard. It is easy and it much better than prepared mustard from a store.* Making mayonnaise is the easy part since by now you will have the eggs. I only takes four minutes to make a good size jar of healthy, olive oil mayo.* Okay, so we have our eggs, mustard, mayo, horseradish, possibly some chili powder, garlic, and maybe some fresh oregano. Don’t forget to buy olives. Olives are an important ingredient in deviled eggs. Third: Boil your eggs. For deviled eggs, you need eggs with firm whites and yolks that are tender. If they are over-cooked the yolks are dry, greenish and the whites are rubbery. If they are under-cooked, the whites are runny and will not hold the filling.. The perfect boiled egg for deviled eggs: Level your stove. Eggs in a pan that is not level will bump into each other while boiling. Put the eggs is a pan. Do not put too many eggs in the pan at a time, you do NOT want them touching each other. Add very cold water to about an inch above the top of the eggs. Bring the water up to a nice low boil. If the stove burner is too hot, the water has fast moving large air bubbles coming up from the bottom of the pot and your precious eggs bounce up and down and may get broken. Set a timer for twelve minutes. Have a big bowl with VERY cold water in it ready. When the timer goes off transfer eggs to the cold water. This stops them from any further cooking. Fifth: Peel the eggs. Peeling eggs is tough. Eggs have an air pocket in them. Tap to find the air pocket. Start there. Tap the egg at the air pocket on a hard surface. Don’t roll it around like it were a lemon that you were about to juice. Then just find the membrane of the egg and start to peel. Now, I have NOT mastered egg peeling, I just told you the technique, but it takes an awful lot of practice.

Summer 2015 • Page 31 Finally: Slice your eggs in two (the length of the egg). Put the yolks in a bowl, the whites on a plate. Mix all your chosen ingredients into the yolks, I use a table fork, others use a soup spoon. Add your ingredients and season to your own taste or the taste of someone you love. Fill the egg white cavity with your own personalized egg yolk filling. Possibly put slice of olive on each egg half and perhaps sprinkle Paprika on top. Transfer them to a plate designed just for deviled eggs, you can find egg plates with cavities for the eggs at just about any price range, some so affordable you can leave them with the hostess at a party. Now it is time to celebrate your triumphant mastery of the deviled egg and be part of the egg's long history in the culinary arts. * See recipes for mustard and Mayonnaise below

Recipes for Mustard and Mayonnaise Home made mustard: One part purchased, powdered mustard or mustard seed you grind – one part cold water. Let the paste sit for at least ten minutes. That's it, you have fresh mustard. Olive Oil Mayonnaise: 1 large egg 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon of warm water 1/4 teaspoon mustard 1/4 teaspoon coarse sea salt 3/4 cup of olive oil 1. Combine all of the ingredients except the oil in a blender container. Blend 10 seconds or until combined. With the blenderrunning slowly dribble in 1/4 cup of the oil has been absorbed and combined. 2. With the blender running continue pouring the remaining 1/2 cup oil a little faster, making sure the oil is oil is being incorporated and absorbed before more is added. Cover and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Makes 3/4 cup of mayonnaise.

Fugit inreparabile tempus (Vergil)

On occasion time the river slows widens out around us becomes a shining flatness we are in and out of – shapes like fish arc all around, and the near distance is a touch away, or miles, and the constant airborne murmuring shifts from mosquito whine to hosannas, beatitudes. In that precious space you may not turn to another needfully for then the leveled waters tilt – a sudden noise and the white curdling ahead, all around, of rapids, surrounding mist from the waterfall’s spray – time flies irreparably on. Or you might be sitting looking at a wall and the steady wall irises open not at any window just the blank wall opens and sight touches a membrane in or beyond which either the old things or new ones dance without motion resonant like atoms in a molecule and the voices which are speaking make a single simple message in a root tongue primal as stone and cosmos untranslatable and as soon as you notice you are puzzled the wall resumes its steady flatness and maybe you’ve been crying for five minutes and it’s true all time is time that flies. Metaphysical Times RAIN ON A POND The broken loosestrife and cat-tail reeds stand among eyeglass-heaps of the water-surface, obdurately resisting the fluid stresses, as the rain’s scarves and sprays move across the pond—most vividly at the center where their unison effect is like cavorting flocks of starlings, but under a sky that is tincolored, so there is no shimmer—tasseled with soup-can labels and filmy tatters of plastic, the cage of a half-sunken shopping cart lodged at one end. The water is still cold, even the rain you’re not accustomed to noticing warmth in seems warmer— and when you stoop to dip your hand in gives quite a jolt. Meanwhile the rain doesn’t abate. Its textures broaden until across this imaginary pond, its sounds having become regular—a steady hiss, like wind in a hay field— the world looms suddenly, or maybe it was already there.

Metaphysical Times Sagittarius continued from page # 25 your work. At some point in your life you may go through a crisis, relating to your health or work, which causes you to be concerned about your social image. This could even affect your health. There is also a possibility that you could experience pressure which might compel you to want to make some personal adjustments - work, health, or otherwise - so that you might again earn the respect of others. You are concerned about your social image, but it’s likely that you’ll go through much hard work, perseverance and growth through crises, in order to get ahead in the world. Since you do need to stand out and be respected for your work and your intelligence, you can see that this will depend primarily on your efforts to earn this social approval. You may eventually get involved in a business service. You may have to guard against criticalness and tendencies to get caught up in petty or inconsequential details in your ambitions to get ahead. On the other hand, remember, you will have to focus and pay attention to details when it is appropriate. Your Father has some sort of influence on your career and ambitions. Although he may be critical at times, he is probably hard working, discriminating, practical, intelligent, and willing to help you. Summary Finally, Sagittarius; may you soar to the heights of wisdom and knowledge, and discover the true freedom that these can bring to you as you travel and seek meaning to Life. As your optimism draws you into everwidening spheres of understanding, may you also come to realize that your immediate surroundings and daily communicative encounters and situations in the here-and-now, may be just as “heavenly” and important an arena for growing, sharing your knowledge – and acquiring more.

Metaphysics of Love The Journey to Meet Self Addressing Your Concerns - With Dennis Cole Go to metaphysicsoflove.com to send in your question

“More Children?”

Dennis, I’m recently married and there are three step children involved; and I’m very concerned about whether I should have more children? Thank you for any information you can give me about this concern. – Laura Thanks for sharing this concern, Laura. I’m sure that there are many millions of people who have had the same important decision, because of the physical, financial, spiritual, social or other concerns that can be involved. A big concern for many can also be about the security of the relationship itself. At some level, the perceived viability of a shared child could stand as a symbol of the parental union and its viability! Perhaps something to consider for some couples who can’t seem to conceive a child! All of our relationships involve a need to weigh our personal values and needs with the shared values and needs. In this situation you might want to ask yourself: “How do I feel about what he prefers, about having more children? Very little is more important in Life than that you care about and pay attention to, how you feel! It’s divine to be Self-ish and to allow others to be themselves. When we get in touch with, and pay attention to, the God within, through our intuition, when we listen to our heart, because it feels good, then we can be sure that that’s the way our Source Energy is viewing the situation. Then we can bring the whole of who we really are “to the table” in our relationships with others. But to do this without guilt, fear or worry about how our authenticity might affect others; and definitely without any negative attitudes on our part! Just calmly, firmly, be yourself and allow others their right to live by their reality So much more fun to be around! You might think:” But I don’t want to hurt anyone!” You can’t hurt others; we all attract what we choose to focus Consciousness upon, whether we like it or not! If you’re tolerating anything, you’re hurting. No one is here to hurt! Yes, compassion is a wonderful thing! However, when we learn that no on can choose our thoughts for us, then we can have compassion – with detachment! We’re here for Joy, and that comes – to use the words of James Allen – by choosing to: “Think good thought and they will quickly become actualized in your outward life in the form of good conditions.” Once we begin to realize that “like always attracts like” then we will begin to care about and pay attention to how we feel! Under this Universal, “As ye sow…”, Law of Attraction”, we will then be able to free ourselves from the belief that there are “victims.” It also helps to know that we are Eternal and that there is no such thing as “death”. Each of us, in our diversity, are unique Perspectives of our One Source Energy Love. By focusing more on the good things in our relating with our “Siblings in Spirit” we often can help heal some differences in reality. My New Year’s resolution – my “prayer without ceasing” – for many years has been: “Notice how GoOD things are.” It soothes the Soul to practice this Appreciation, because that is the Love Source at the core of Our Be-ing! Our needs are known, and all we need to do in order to help manifest these desires is to devote an itsy-bitsy more time on imagining/feeling “as if already” and no time in regurgitating and focusing on the lack of what we want. Just go more general about your desires. For example: “I love the feeling of how happy we are with the Joyful and loving family we have.” Know that that ending to this story must come from your being You. Let the Universe unfold the steps for you, knowing that you’re on your way, but elated to realize that your power to allow it in is always based on how you feel right Now…Now…Now…… What we’ve said in this response holds the clues.

In Oneness, Dennis

why you'll probably never see me on a reality show

BY CORBIE MITLEID There was a weekend recently that was interesting from several points of view, from fabulous (record number of people read and an abundant take-home) to horrific (my show wallet with $800 in cash got lifted at the Homewood Suites where I was staying). And right in the middle – let’s say in an intriguing and lesson-giving sort of way – was an encounter with a television producer. I liked her energy and what it sounded like she was putting together, though she wouldn’t give me any details. In a lot of physical and personality ways she reminded me of the stellar news/political reporter Susan Arbetter, who I’ve loved for years. She chuckled at all the right places in my usual banter. So when she said she’d like a reading with me, I was pleased to arrange one that day. She did say she expected it to be for free, as this was like an “audition.” Well, I am used to that kind of thing from media types, so I said fine, even though that is usually not my policy at shows. At her appointed time, she rushed into the booth, energized from a healing session with one of the bigger names on stage that day. I started to read. And I very quickly realized I was not going to be what she wanted. My readings are like no one else’s – and I don’t say that with hubris; it’s just fact that my style is different from most. When we read Tarot, she commented that it just seemed so “random.” I did a short past life reading and I’m not sure how she took it; she didn’t appear to click with it. She asked for her spirit guides and I apparently came up with one she found “charming” but I don’t remember (I never do). And hurrying at the end of the session she asked for her aunt, and to tell her “something I couldn’t know that would be a verifier.” When I have a minute and a half to get someone at the end of a session, and am given that kind of “give me what I want now” order, it generally doesn’t work; as I say, I’m not dial a dead. She also questioned why I needed to do several things the

Summer 2015 • Page 37 way I do several times, rather than observe and be present. It ended up that I simply looked at her and said “Look, I’d love to be part of what you are doing but I am clearly not what you want.” She still got her free reading out of it – what managed to get done, anyway. She was charming and said she’d keep in touch. But I’m not holding my breath. Shows like the Long Island Medium and the Big Name Folks have set the bar so that it’s assumed we SHOULD all work the same way they do, pulling things out of the Aethers and amazing everyone. And I simply don’t. Why? Because I’m not in it for the amazement value. I’m in it for serving my clients. And if my particular style works best FOR ME to achieve that, I’m not going to consider myself “lesser” because I can’t stand up in front of an audience and say “I am getting someone in golf shorts with a pink umbrella who says her name is Claire and she died of pancreatic cancer” in the hopes that someone knows who this is and this is a Message From Beyond. I give huge props to those mediums who can do that. My fellow student with John Holland and soul-brother Savonn Champelle can do that; so can my New York compatriot Allie Cheslick. But not me. My reading gifts are those that are gifts in private: soul readings that lay out multiple past lives in detail and nuance, so that you can trace why you have major challenges in this lifetime. Connecting you with your own Soul, so that you can converse with this essence of who you are in Spirit. Mediumship that downloads the personality and soul of the one you seek so that you can converse with them as well. But I’m learning that my best gifts, my strongest gifts, and the gifts that really do change things for people, are my abilities to teach and to inspire with talks and lectures. And that sort of thing will never be the razzle-dazzle that a reality show looks for. Am I good enough to be famous? Yes, I am. Will I be? Probably not for my readings, at least not in the hypehype media world. But the year this happened was a "1" year for me numerologically; that's a year for setting new roads and finding where I truly love to be. The two astrologers I consult most often, Stephen Jarvis and Sharita Star, have both said that I should expect to be off the road as a Travel Channel by 2017, or I’ll be burned out. Doesn’t mean I won’t travel to speak and teach, but it’s not going to be 45 weekends on the road, reading 58 people in 25 hours of showtime as I did that weekend in New Jersey. So here's the deal, if any of you producers are reading this: if you call me and say you've got a show and you want me to audition and it involves proving to you that I'm good: thanks, but no thanks. On the other hand, if you come to me incognito, simply as a client, allow me to do my work in a situation that doesn't have "prove it" as the first energy I need to deal with, and THEN say "you know, I really like what you do, would you be interested in considering a television/radio gig?" then I will absolutely, positively, delightedly talk to you about your project and how I might be a good fit. But from now on, my self-respect and self-trust trumps any delicious Fifteen-Minute-Of-Reality-Show Fame that gets dangled in front of me if I perform on command for the person flinging out the bait.
